Taking the hard work out of food selection How does this guide help you? The Fuelled4life Buyers’ Guide is a fantastic tool to help school canteen staff, teachers, parents and caregivers to easily identify and source healthier everyday and sometimes foods and drinks.

How Can I Use This Guide?

For the canteen Select foods and drinks to stock in the canteen. Create special deals and combos.

For fundraising and competitions Choose products from the guide for fundraising or prizes for competitions.

For events Choose healthier options for special occasions and parties.

How does Fuelled4life work?

Food companies register products with Fuelled4life that meet the everyday or sometimes nutrient criteria.

We classify the foods and drinks according to the nutrients (fat, sugar, salt) they contain and whether they are recommended for sale or provision in schools.

We list them in this Buyers’ Guide and also on our website www.fuelled4life.org.nz

Increasing Profit through Canteen Promotions Profit expectations vary in different schools. In many schools the canteen is considered a significant source of funding; for other schools this is less of a focus. Marketing is vital to making a financial success of any changes to the canteen menu. One way to achieve success is to have significant student involvement in any planned changes from the beginning of the process.

Use the following four strategies to increase the profitability of your canteen Product

Price

This refers to having something your students want to buy. Consider surveying your students to ﬁnd out what they want the canteen to offer. Also think about freshness, variety, and limited time specials to keep them coming back to see what is new.

Students care a great deal about price and getting value for money. Perhaps have daily or weekly specials on certain items.

Place/Presentation Food presentation is an important factor. Colour, ﬂavour and temperature all greatly inﬂuence food choice. If food looks, smells and tastes great, students are more likely to buy it and keep buying it! Display your food in an attractive way in appropriate containers so that your customers can easily see it. Positioning of everyday foods at eye level or close to the counter in the canteen or tuck shop (ensure that these foods can also be seen by younger children children). Presentation also include includes making sure your canteen is as attractiv attractive a it can be and is as somewhere your students will want to spe sspend nd time.

Promotion Promotion aims to make your students aware of what you have to sell and to persuade them to buy it. Promotional tips include:

• Have a daily specials board and circulate canteen specials via the school notices/ newsletter.

• When introducing a new product, reduce the cost of the product for the ﬁrst week and advertise the special is for a ‘limited time’.

• Try taste testing of new product. • Introduce combo meals that include a sandwich/wrap, fruit or yoghurt and drink.

• Do giveaways, such as free fruit with all main meal items purchased.

• Rename new products with names that make the foods more appealing and exciting eg. Wicked Chicken Wrap.

• Run a competition to name the canteen, a new canteen food or re-design the canteen menu.

• Use 2-for-1 deals, prizes, incentives and implement canteen loyalty cards to promote the sale of food in the canteen.

Fresh Made â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a new category for Fuelled4life Fresh Made is an exciting new category of Fuelled4life that has been launched to provide nutrient guidelines for non-packaged foods. Fresh Made introduces Fuelled4life criteria to food service businesses such as those that supply lunches to schools. This is an important step towards creating healthier learners as many schools use online lunch programmes or local food suppliers to provide meals for students and as a consequence, have a large impact on child health and nutrition. It can be challenging for busy canteens and caterers to get the right balance of taste and nutrition while still being affordable. The new guidelines support lunch programmes, school canteens and other local food suppliers to make the food they prepare healthier. If your school uses a lunch service Fuelled4life can offer them support to meet the everyday and sometimes Fuelled4life criteria for their menu items. If you are looking for a food service company to provide lunches for your students, Fresh Made has a list of registered companies that supply a range of everyday and sometimes freshly made foods. Heart Foundation Programmes

HEART START* Toitoi Manawa Give your students the best start with the Heart Foundation’s Heart Start* Toitoi Manawa programme. This free curriculum-linked programme is partially funded by the Ministry of Health and available for all schools. It is designed to help build an environment that supports healthy eating, physical activity and learning. Through signing up to the programme, your school will receive support from your Health Promotion Coordinator (HPC) to work with you to complete relevant modules. This could include:

Developing a nutrition policy and setting clear guidelines for healthy eating at school.

•

Engaging and empowering your whole school community to make healthy lifestyle choices.

•

Developing lunchbox guidelines for children and their families.

•

Providing practical and classroom education in Food and Nutrition or PE and Health.

•

Developing a procedure to ensure no children go hungry at school.

• •

Improving your school canteen or lunch order.

•

Promoting healthy eating and physical activity through school initiatives.

•

Providing professional development for staff.

Improving school food provision and utilising Fuelled4life.

Snack Attack Everyone loves snacks, so why not use a FREE unit plan from the Heart Foundation to make healthier snacking easy – turn learning into fun with Snack Attack. The Heart Foundation has developed a level 3 unit plan called ‘Snack Attack’. The unit plan is essentially a whole term’s teaching plan, providing links to the curriculum, achievement objectives and national standards assessment tasks. Students will learn about important nutrition concepts such as hauora, the four food groups, energy balance, label reading and how to identify healthier packet snacks using Fuelled4life. Students are asked to survey their peers to identify snack preferences and use their ﬁndings to design a healthy snack.
