There is no “Official Polish” for the big Vancouver film industry, but if there was, it would be “Clapham’s Beeswax Polish” 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The paint shops use it on everything! They have found over the years, that they can add all kinds of pigments and fillers to the polish, for an extraordinary range of applications. They added a metallic powder to finish the casino safe in “A Thousand Miles To Graceland.” It was made of plywood, but you’d never know. “Battlestar Galactica” used the polish in a broad range of applications, from space fighter aircraft, to the sorry-looking crew accommodations on a derelict space freighter. Our biggest single movie was “Snow Falling On Cedars”, which featured a full-sized, wood-panelled Court House. It took 40 pails of polish, and looked like a million bucks. As a technical note, they also like the polish because it only takes a few moments to dull down glare in the lens of the camera during filming. We welcome enquiries from all film makers.

The historic 2400 Motel is a piece of Vancouver’s history. The classic 65 unit motor court was built in 1946. After the Second World War the motel provided car-oriented accommodation on the primary route into the city. Many rooms include a kitchenette and you can park virtually in front of your room. Because of the nostalgic feel of the motel, it has been used as a location for TV and films such as the ones below.

Though it has been a stand-in for everything mountain from Alaska to California to Nepal, perhaps Whistler Resort’s greatest role is, well, just being itself.

But Whistler is always ready to accommodate film crews and is a favorite destination for international television productions from the BBC, Japan, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden and, of course, the United States. Whistler has also been the location of choice for beer, automotive, coffee, and dog food commercials, as well as clothing catalogues, feature films, television series, reality television shows, wildlife documentaries, fashion shoots and multi media productions. Aside from the top of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, Whistler’s unique and easily accessible locations include House Rock in the Whistler Interpretive Forest, luxurious log homes, the floatplane base on Green Lake, Rainbow Park and and Lost Lake Park. Exciting new venues will soon be added as Whistler is a host community for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, including a bobsled/luge track on the side of Blackcomb Mountain, an Olympic athlete’s village at the entrance to the Interpretive Forest and a Nordic centre in the Callaghan Valley, just five minutes south of Whistler. Construction on these venues begins in 2005. Tourism Whistler, the marketing arm of the resort, will facilitate travel and tourism promotional productions and its Central Reservations can help search out the best accommodation (604-932-3928). No onerous paperwork or hoops to jump through here. Once a location is chosen and the details confirmed, the permit process takes a matter of minutes.
