Second year MSc Forensic and Medical Sciences student Radhika Dave is hoping to be declared the Face of the Globe as the annual international beauty pageant prepares to hold its next showcase at Disneyland Paris in April.

1-IN-12 CLUB LIBRARY

ME REX/ TEA LEAF/GERRARD BELL-FIFE/CHARLES HANSON

The 1 in 12 Club kicked off the new year with little undue haste by setting up a quadruple bill of acts to give punters a boost after the inevitable new year’s hangover/ anti-climax.

First up was the bastard love child of Charles Manson and Alan Hanson i.e.

Charles Hanson. The first lyrics I picked up were something like “I’m growing tired of being lifeless all the time”. He was chugging down a bottle of Lambrini to boost his performance but as was mentioned – a different set of rules apply in the Library than the Bar and at least he wasn’t on Special Brew like Captain and the Hotknives.

His guitar work was chugging, clashing and clunky and reminded me of a punky Billy Bragg and maybe a bit Graham Coxonish. Also, he was a little bit Jarvis Cocker if he (Jarvis) was cool and proper indie, which Jarvis doesn’t seem to be any more.

More lyrics – “I’m a wreck and you just don’t know it yet.” His one man set continued with jagged chords and sudden endings. I’m not sure what the titles of his songs are because he didn’t give them out.

His charismatic moody nonchalance was epitomised towards the end of his set by his questioning of his friend Liam’s late

appearance. “What’s wrong Liam?” he plaintively cried, which could also be an excellent song title if he could be bothered giving his songs titles.

Next on was Nottingham born Bradfordian Gerrard Bell-Fife. Starting off with “In My Time” with coruscating “Dead and gone” lyrics about coming to terms with mortality and facing it head on. The dark, world weary optimism of his lyrics and music disembowels the pretensions of everyday life. Complicated and dense atmospherics shed a gentle, gloomy light in the dark. “A spoonful of sugar will rot your teeth.”

His head down static stage presence casts a musical spell like a wizard who would be way too cool to have anything to do with Harry Potter. Although it has to be said Gerard, with his baggy jumpers et al, does dress a bit similar to Harry Potter.

Gerrard’s final track was one of his best, “The One Place”, featuring some of his most vivid lyrics. “If you don’t make it, it won’t get made at all”, “the greatest thing in life hasn’t happened yet” and “We share these stories daily.” His “piece of time to kill” line almost made me laugh out loud, reminding me of Morrissey at his most sardonic.

Next up was the bad relationship blues of Leeds based Tea Leaf, who in one of his early songs claimed to be “depressed and depending on this vice.” His intelligent lyrics were mournful and regretful and contrasted with the punchy beating of his guitar. “there’s nothing left that I can say to drive you further away” and “fractions of a hope” is maybe a bit of a bleak worldview however. Maybe they’re just phrases he’s going through. His apopoliptic, slightly dismal vision was summed up these clips of sample lyrics, “Been drinking alone” and “The world is ending.” To his credit he announced that he was donating the proceeds of his merch sales to Mind.

Finally, Me Rex from Peckham, London came on as the headline (in some nonexistent newspaper) act. His brilliant lyricism and eloquence backed by clever guitar work can especially be witnessed on the tracks A Stellar Abattoir and True North, sample lyric “You leave me yearning like a virgin in the dirty static snow.”

All in all it was quite a fun evening (with miserable spells) and a bit of a booster against the ever present danger of mid winter blues.

REGARDING PANCAKES This is the pancake recipe that my family uses each year for Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday (or whenever else we want to eat pancakes or pancake rolls). It’s not a typical American pancake recipe, but is closer to the crepe-style of pancake. I roll my pancakes into tubes and fill them with my favourite toppings, sugar and lemon or honey!

Ingredients: • • • •

1/4 lb plain flour 1 egg 1/2 pint of milk 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions: 1. Measure appropriate quantity of plain flour.

2. Add eggs to mixing bowl. Add one teaspoon of salt and whisk, preferably with a free-standing machine.

3. Measure out milk into jug.

4. Gradually add flour and milk to the egg mixture and whisk.

At intervals, use a spatula to remove mix from the sides of the bowl and incorporate them back into the mixture.

5. Set pan on cooker at about level 3. Using a piece of spare rag, grease pan with sunflower oil. Grease pan for each new pancake.

6. Add two tablespoons of batter for each pancake. Spread the batter evenly in the pan and cook on both sides.

7. Serve the pancakes with sugar and lemon, or honey, or maple syrup, or any other topping of your choice.

THE 88th ACADEMY AWARDS Nominees for Best Feature Films (In Alphabetical order)

The Big Short (2015) Directed by: Adam McKay

A Wall Street genius (Christian Bale) foresees the crash of the house stock market in 2008 and works with a team of investors to bet against the US mortgage market.

My thoughts: This is another film about the financial crisis in 2008 but with a fresh approach: witty comedy. The film is cleverly made so that, at the end, you’re not sure how to feel about the characters or what they did. It is definitely a film that questions everyone’s moral compass while informing how the great minds of Wall Street will always be the ones ‘on top’.

Bridge of Spies (2015) Directed by: Steven Spielberg

In the middle of the Cold War, the CIA captures a soviet alleged spy in New York and, for his trial, an American insurance lawyer (Tom Hanks) agrees to represent him; but he ends up solving a hostage situation in Berlin.

My thoughts: I haven’t been a fan of new Steven Spielberg movies and this is not the exception. Bridge of Spies is a slow movie that turns around Tom Hanks’ acting skills. There is nothing new, nothing innovative about this movie: we’ve all heard about Soviet and American spies sending information over to their respective governments. The film also had long dialogues in Russian and German without any subtitles: Spielberg agues that he actively made that decision so that its audience felt as lost as the main character, but to be honest, it only made me check my phone more often.

Brooklyn (2015) Directed by: John Crowley

An Irish Immigrant (Saroise Ronan) living in New York in the 1950s falls for an Italian plumber (no, not Super Mario) and is quickly torn between her life back in Ireland and America.

My thoughts: This movie is a slow paced romantic drama that has a fantastic cast.

You don’t see Ronan and Cohen (her love interest) for more than 20 minutes on screen and you are instantly in love with their love.

The chemistry between these two actors is fantastic and compels you to watch until the last second. The dialogues are real and some scenes feel like an improvisation exercise. Saroise Ronan portrays one of the most touching stories you’ll see this year.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Directed by: George Miller

Driven only by the will to survive in the desert wasteland he calls home, Max (Tom Hardy), a man of action and of few words, helps a new female companion (Charlize Theron) in the search for her homeland while trying to stay one step ahead of a gang of ruthless marauders.

My thoughts: Mad Max is a very cool film to watch but I felt like overdosing on violence for two hours; my head was hurting after a while.

However, the film is visually aesthetic but the main attraction of it is Tom Hardy and his raw take of Max. Not a big fan of the film, but it deserves to be watched.

The Martian (2015) Directed by: Ridley Scott

A mars expedition has an emergency evacuation off the red planet after the threat of a very powerful storm, leaving behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon). Having survived the natural event, Watney has to find away to keep himself alive until the next expedition comes to rescue him in 4 years.

My thoughts: The Martian is a different space movie that teaches us how to literally eat out of our own sh!t. The characters, however, are very banal and easy to forget; I assume that’s why the director picked so many A-list actors to play small roles. But the humor and wit of the main character, Mark Watney, is what makes this movie so attractive; the way he finds a solution to problems that are unthinkable to people here on Earth is beyond entertaining.

The Revenant (2016)

Directed by: Alejandro Gonzales Iñarritu An experienced frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is horrifically attack by a bear and has to use his survival skills until he and his expedition can reach a camp in the vast uncharted territory of North American in 1823.

My thoughts: (where to begin, really…)

The Revenant is an out-of-this-world experience that proves that Gonzales Iñarritu is one of the best directors of our time.

The cinematography of this film is seamless and beautifully planned, pay special attention to the opening sequence; it’s a 20-minutes long without any cuts! The art department went above and beyond to make this story as compelling as possible, the ice in DiCaprio’s beard is actually melted wax and almost every actor had to take at least 6 hours of make up per scene.

The movie carries a complex storyline of vengeance, grief and basic human instincts while showing impressive raw landscapes and impressive filmmaking skills. It is definitely my top choice to win the award.

Room (2015)

Directed by: Lenny Abrahamson After 5 years in captivity Jack and his mother escape from a shed they had been held in, but now they both need to adapt to the outside world and discover their lives again.

My thoughts: This movie should win the Oscar for best film, but most probably won’t. Room is one of the most touching stories I’ve ever seen; it had me crying half an hour into the movie. The cinematography is clever and very efficient in showing the world how Jack sees it, especially the scenes when he is first out of the shed. The performances are raw and perfectly executed.

Why this 9-year-old boy is not nominated for an Oscar, I don’t know, but he completely killed every scene and transmitted shivering emotions to the audience. And the script, adapted from a novel, is well rounded and a true example of how films can compliment books. Jack’s voiceover throughout the film is what sets the tone of the film and the bridge that connects this fantastic script with its audience.

Spotlight (2015) Directed by: Tom McCarthy

A group of journalists from The Boston Globe is assigned to investigate a catholic priest that is accused of pedophilia. Soon they find that it’s not only one priest and that there are many other crimes to uncover.

My thoughts: Sincerely, I don’t know why this film is nominated for an Academy Award. The story IS controversial and important for everyone to know about, but the film is bland. The performances are not special at all, the script is predictable, and the cinematography is boring: I guess the story is so controversial that the director played it ‘safe’ in all of the others aspects.

What’s the deal with #OscarsSoWhite ?

For the second consecutive year The Academy Awards nominees are only ‘white’ people.

This instance has result in several actors and actresses starting a boycott against the Academy. What are your thoughts? Is the academy just a bunch of racist white old people? Or is it just a matter of a lack of diversity in the roles and movies? And wouldn’t that mean that the writers are to blame?

THE NETFLIX CORNER

Some ‘Must Watch’ recommendations for Netflix, plus other popular ones that you shouldn’t miss out on!

Master of None

This American comedy series created and starring Azis Ansari is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Ansari proposes a new kind of American comedy with eccentric humor, witty banter and exceptional cultural references about our very technology-dependent society.

The show is about Dev Raj, a commercials actor living in New York City, trying to have his big break. At a short glimpse, this Netflix series seems like another silly American comedy attempt with an actor trying to exploit his recent popularity.

Ansari is best known for his role as Tom

Haverford in the Emmy award winning ‘Parks and Recreation’.

But Master of None is a beautifully written text that deals with race, parenting (and parents), the struggles of finding a ‘good’ job and relationships. Each one of the episodes has a specific theme and it guides the audience through ‘Dev’ and his eccentric friends lives and how they deal with it.

The dialogue and script direction is on point. Ansari achieves to capture our dysfunctional way of abbreviating or

Update on Narcos Last issue’s review of the Netflix produced series Narcos perhaps might have compelled you to watch this very good series about Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

And although Wagner Moura, the shows lead, was somehow nominated for a Golden Globe for Best actor in a Television Series: Drama, he thankfully didn’t win.

Moreover, a not-so-new series was added to Netflix about Pablo Escobar recently.

“Escobar: El Patrón del Mal”, the Colombian take into Escobar’s rise and fall, is now available to watch on Netflix UK. Now, for all Narcos fans out there, this series is a must watch. And yes, it is in Spanish but you can read the subtitles!

The show was so popular in Colombia and other countries of Latin America that people were rooting for Pablo and crying over his misfortunes.

Colombians, victims of all of Escobar’s doings and now stuck with an incorrect stereotype, were actually crying over Pablo’s Death (SPOILER ALERT: he dies). WHAT THE HELL! If this doesn’t compel you to watch this Colombian production, I don’t know what will. Give it a try… if you want… or not. The important thing is that now you know.

renaming anything we can think of. The dialogues are also very disperse and capture how our multitasking obsession has result in disengagement in the art of conversing with friends and family.

I cannot praise this show enough, even the opening titles are delightful and, perhaps, so visually compelling that set the mood for the whole show.

In November, the Men’s Football Association took part in a Charity obstacle course known as Wolf Run. 9 Students participated and they raised over £1000 for their chosen Charity Orchid who specialise in fighting against male cancer. Orchid exists to save men’s lives from testicular, prostate and penile cancers through pioneering research and promoting awareness.

The Wolf Run is Wild Running - a unique combination of three kinds of off-road running: mud runs, trail runs and obstacle runs.

The only Wild Run in the UK, it’s a hardcore 10k run across raw natural terrain, including open ground, woodland, lakes & thick mud.

Further to this, Men’s Football are partaking in a testicular and prostate examinations to help spread the awareness of those regions amongst men, and not be embarrassed to do so! This will occur in late February. They are also doing a group Blood Donation to help spread the awareness of how giving blood can save lives, and you shouldn’t be afraid to do so.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

On the gracious green field that is home to many of the greatest sports teams in the world. Another cold rainy Sunday was upon us, what started as a massacre, with the Bears scoring 24 points in the first half. This battle of the ages slowly died down into a mindless mashing of skulls, where only 6 more points were scored. The solid brick wall that was the Bradford Bears defence

did not break as Manchester Met’s offence were not able to get started in this game which ended in a landslide victory to the Bradford Bears 30-0. Taking their record to 2-3, but setting them up for a playoff spot if the next 3 games share a similar performance from a dominating side.

CIVIL ENGINEERING SOCIETY

The Civil and Structural Engineering Society, CivSoc, is a society to give you engineers a head start in your career and a good laugh along the way! We have site visits and guest lecturers coming in to chat to us about their work. Many of these are CPD applicable for you lot who want to get chartered. Even if you’re not studying civil engineering you are more than welcome to come along. We have Ismail Hussein from Rawlplug Engineering coming in March and a site visit with Matthew Young from Met Engineers taking us on a site visit very soon. Places are limited so get in touch ASAP; boots are available to borrow if you don’t have them.

Recently we’ve had Ewart from Alan Auld Engineering coming to chat about tunneling which was insightful and very interesting.

Alongside his freebies he presented well. Going back a bit further we had a site visit with national contractor ISG who are currently working on the old Halifax bank building in Halifax as shown in the picture attached. They took 6 of us students in, showed us round, explained the technical drawings, gave us tea and biscuits and told us all the issues and solutions they had deal with. These guys were great and have invited us back, an offer which we look forward to taking them up on in the future!

BUSOM: “BACK TO THE 80’S”

From the people who brought you great performances of ‘Moby Dick! The Musical’ and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, BUSOM are once again back in the spotlight with their upcoming main show ‘Back to the 80s!’ From the 10th – 12th March, in The Bradford Playhouse’s @Studio, we’ll be rocking, popping, and dancing on the ceiling as we journey through the memories of Cory Palmer’s musical recollections of his 80s school days.

The BUSOM main show is the highlight of our calendar; and is a show where we take to the stage and pull out all the stops, complete with props, lighting, dancing, and everything else that makes a great show.

A lot of dedicated people put in tremendous amounts of hard work to make a musical come to life, and this one is no exception! I spoke to some of the production team of ‘Back to the 80’s’ to find out what it takes to put together a show.

What’s your role in the BUSOM main show? What do you do?

Carys: “Hello, I’m Carys and I’m one of the Musical Directors for Back to the 80’s. I’ve taught a few of the songs for the musical and put together some dance routines for the bigger numbers. I’ve also pitched in for the planning and poster designs. It was pretty scary to go put in front of a group of people and tell them what to do, but it’s always so great when I can hear it all coming together at the end of teaching a song, and it’s very nice to see when people are having fun and enjoying a song when it finally clicks for them” Elina: “Hi, I’m Elina and I’m the Director of acting, and stage placement – setting the scenes and directing our performers where to go etc.”

Katie: “Hello, I’m Katie, and I’m the producer for the main show. I’ve been doing a lot of making lists of costumes and props, and discussing with cast members what costumes would be great for their character. I’ve also been trying to put together some fun facts about the songs featured in the musical to be included in the show’s programme.”

Carys: “I’ve also got a part in the show itself so that’s extra work, and fun!”

Katie: “I’ve also got a little part in the show too; I’m going to be a Minion! Not one of those yellow things, but an invisible person who has a cursor and moves characters during a dream sequence – you’ll see what I mean on the night!”

What are you looking forward to about this show?

Carys: “I’m definitely looking forward to the dress rehearsals, because then we can see exactly what needs more work, and what the strongest parts of the show are.”

Elina: “We’ve made a few small changes and I am quite hoping that these will be well received, as the show has been minorly modernised, as well as adjusted for a slightly-smaller stage that we’re used to using. It’s going to be an interesting show no matter what happens, and I look forward to seeing how it goes.”

Do you have a favourite song from the show?

Carys: “Yes, my personal favourite song we’ve done is Material Girl, because I totally am one ha-ha” Elina: “So far, my favourite song is Centrefold, but that might change once we choreograph it!”

Katie: “It’s a touch choice, but my favourite songs in the musical are Walking on Sunshine and Kids in America. But I’ve also recently taken a liking to Come On Eileen; I can’t wait to see how the show turns out!”

It’s going to be a great show that’s bound to feature leg-warmers, big hair and bright neon colours, as well as loads of classics 80’s hits. So whether the 80’s was before your time, or you remember them fondly, you’ll have the time of your life and will be a fantastic night out for all.
