Prepare to paint the town orange, because Carrot Fest 2012 is just more than one week away.

To help generate some buzz for Bradford’s annual celebration of everyone’s favourite root vegetable, the town has hung banners from the streetlights in the downtown core and a large sign on the way into the community informs passing motorists that the party starts Aug. 18. The excitement is indeed building, the town’s leisure events and marketing programmer Joe Lotto said, adding this year’s event promises to be the biggest and best yet.

“This year we’ll have well over 300 vendors for Carrot Fest,” he said. “I think that’s probably the most we’ve ever had.”

Beyond more vendors, this year’s Carrot Fest will also welcome in some new acts and attractions.

One exciting addition is the two new busker areas, Mr. Lotto said, explaining that visitors can stop by See page 5

The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is hoping that a united front will encourage the province to budge on the long-awaited Bradford bypass.

Earlier this summer, York Region council adopted a series of recommendations relating to the York-Simcoe Boundary Area Transportation

Needs Study Update, part of which directed York staffers to work with their counterparts in other municipalities in an effort to get some movement on the link between highways 400 and 404. Correspondence on the subject from the region made up part of the information agenda at Tuesday’s Bradford Council meeting and prompted members of See page 9.

Big Grill uses Ontario apple wood exclusively for the sweet flavour it produces. For large cookouts, wood pellets formed from sawdust and binding material are used in smokers and grills.

Charcoal is making a comeback, Mr. Bassakyros admits, adding his Big Green Egg ceramic cooker is hot seller.

“People realize they can experiment with charcoal and woods.”

Grillers should only use coals and woods designated for the purpose, both men caution. That means avoiding pine, cedar and pressuretreated or painted wood.

The feud ended in a friendly stalemate.

Gas is convenient and consistent, Mr. Bassakyros asserted.

Charcoal’s heat and smoke serve up tender and traditional cuisine, Mr. Finch countered.

“One is not better than the other, just different,” Mr. Bassakyros said.

“Do what I do and use both.”

Charcoal versus propane.

When it comes to grilling, you have to bring the heat. And that’s where the battle between barbecue aficionados begins.

“In the competitive barbecue community, gas is cheating,” Big Grill Catering owner Kevin Finch said bluntly as he stoked a pile of coal briquettes flamed by aromatic apple wood chunks.

“Convenience is what people are accustomed to, it’s what sells and unless you really like to cook, people won’t venture into the charcoal realm,” Mason Place Fireplace and BBQ Centre salesperson Alki Bassakyros countered.

Thornhill’s Mr. Finch who, with wife Naomi, cater barbecue events with a massive custom-built grill hauled on a trailer and East Gwillimbury’s Mr. Bassakyros, who has been with Mason Place in Keswick for six years, had a cordial showdown, debating the benefits of grilling heat sources.

Both men agree they love to grill, gas is an extremely handy and

When it comes to choosing between propane and charcoal, there are many points to consider. adjustable heat source and with a flick of the off switch and quick brushing of the grate, you’re done.

They concur, too, while charcoal grills are generally less expensive than gas units, they take time to heat, don’t burn as clean as gas, briquettes need to be stocked, ash needs to be collected and grills need to be cleaned.

They know gas grills outsell charcoal three to one and a 20-pound propane tank costs $18 and lasts 16 hours at high temperatures, while the same volume of slightly more expensive charcoal will burn much longer.

There are pros and cons for both heat sources, but the entire matter boils down to esthetics and flavour,

they said.

A gas grill will impart searing heat, caramelizing the exterior of the meat and cooking the interior, Mr. Bassakyros said. If your culinary bent is a tad more developed, charcoal offers more options.

And they’re going to be hungry.

For back yard barbecue hosts, that means sparking up the grill and coming up with a menu to serve between sips and dips on the patio.

For gurus of the grill, the party actually starts well in advance, when the meat is selected at the grocery store or butcher shop.

Certainly budget and party size are considerations, but knowing what to look for at the meat counter is the starting point to the meal experience.

Rule No. 1 for barbecuing meat: Choose quality. Choose tender. Sinking your teeth into a juicy, mouth-watering slab of meat just isn’t the same if it’s not the good stuff.

Be sure to grill your butcher for an under-

standing of what certain cuts are all about.

Know certain cuts may be leaner, but that it isn’t always bad to be chewing a bit of fat.

“Steak-wise, any meat with a good marbling is good for the barbecue,” said Lee Glenister of Victoria Square Country Meats, just outside Bradford. “That’s where the juices and flavour are. You are definitely looking for triple-A meat.”

Leading cuts include ribeye, porterhouse, prime rib and top sirloin.

“A lot of our customers ask a lot of questions, but we generally do the better cuts,” Mr. Glenister said. “I think most people know what they’re looking for when they come in.

“We try to be different from the chain stores. Anything marinated goes well all season.”

Choosing the right cut is a balancing act

and should be dictated not only by the guest list, but also the host’s skills with the grill.

For novices, barbecue caterer Doug Dunec of Big Doug’s BBQ Catering in Udora suggested leaner meats are easier to work with, due to the lower fat content. He recommends novices work with cuts of meat ranging from one inch to 1-1/4 inches in thickness.

With bone or boneless is a matter of personal preference. Trial and error is the only path to improvement, he said.

“Experts can blast them on both sides and they usually like them more rare,” Mr. Dunec said. “For novices, it’s probably easier working with lean cuts. You can sear the meat on both sides, then turn down the heat.”

No matter what the skill level, he said, a super hot grill is critical to a successful finished product.

“Don’t be afraid to ask your butcher what

And don’t be afraid to step outside the traditional lines of taste and go for something different. Since introducing bison burgers last year, the product has become very popular, Mr. Glenister said.

“Bison is our best-selling burger right now,” he said.

Tips from Big Doug • Keep a container of olive oil handy to apply to meats. It helps seasoning stick to the meat’s surface. Rubbing olive oil on the grill also reduces sticking and tears in meat.

• Pre-clean your grill before placing meats.

Instead of a brush, Mr. Dunec suggests a balled up piece of tinfoil to clean the grill.

• Use tongs to turn meat, not a fork. Piercing caused by a fork allows juices and flavour to escape the meat.

on the main stage, just a stone’s throw from the intersection of Holland and Barrie streets.

This year, the bill features a wide assortment of talented acts such as Captain Corbin the Magical Pirate, the Sultans of String, the Elton John Tribute Band featuring Jeff Brewer, Mysterion the Mind Reader, the Connie Scriver Band and more.

And that’s just a sampling of what there is to see and do at Carrot Fest, which stretches across Holland from Colborne Street in the east to Church Street in the west and then along Barrie Street/Simcoe Road from John Street in the north to the BCC in the south.

With so much going on it comes as little surprise that Carrot Fest has, once again, been named one of the top 100 events in the province by Festivals and Events Ontario. Some favourites from years past, such as Silver Elvis and Brant Matthews “The Fire Guy”, are back, but they will be joined by new faces, including beatboxer Scott Jackson and David Aiken “The Checkerboard Guy”.

Visitors to Carrot Fest should also keep their eyes peeled for other performers making the rounds, including Dave Pooley, The Stilt Dancer and a certain webslinger who will be swinging in straight from the pages of Marvel Comics.

“Yes, your friendly, neighbourhood SpiderMan will be visiting Carrot Fest this year,” Mr. Lotto said. “He’ll be out and about signing autographs and posing for pictures.”

Other attractions include the Carrot Fest Artists’ Walk, which will feature work created by some 40 talented artists, and the Gable Bros. Midway both of which will be set up at the Bradford and District Memorial Community Centre at 125 Simcoe Rd. The midway will operate from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 17, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 18 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 19.

The community centre will also be the place to catch the Ontario DockDogs Competition and watch some pro wrestling. This year, the wrestling bill features some big names, including former WWE champions Carlito, Harry Smith and Bobby Lashley. Also be sure to check out all of the entertainment offered

Bring positive thinking to organ donor search

W

e’re at a crossroads when it comes to organ donation in this province.

For years, the province and health care industry have begged you to register to donate your organs after death.

There have been countless information campaigns telling you how to sign up and the 2011 launch of the online registry BeADonor. You can find a link to the registry at yorkregion. com. Despite this, the most recent statistics show the message isn’t getting through.

According to beadonor.ca, of the more than 11.5 million health card holders older than 16, less than 2.5 million are registered organ donors.

The situation is no better in York Region and Bradford.

East Gwillimbury, Keswick, Newmarket, King City, Bradford and Stouffville managed to be at or above the provincial average of 22 per cent.

But, at the other end of the spectrum, Kleinburg (13%), Richmond Hill (11%), Markham (9%), Thornhill (9%), Vaughan (9%), Woodbridge (8%) and Concord (7%) ranked at the very bottom among 179 communities.

The first step in fixing the problem is acknowledging what we’re doing now isn’t working.

We respect there are religious and cultural reasons that keep some people from joining, but suspect most people don’t object to the practice, they just haven’t taken the time to register. We can’t simply hope feeling

good about helping someone else is enough of a reason to sign up for the registry. It’s up to the province to step forward and encourage us with incentives.

Offer a health tax credit or even give a tax break on funeral expenses for people who join the donor registry.

We’re not suggesting paying for organs, but incentives might motivate people to become donors.

In addition to the obvious health benefits of a strong donor registry, there would also be a positive impact on health care costs.

For example, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the estimated cost for dialysis treatment is about $60,000 per patient, per year of treatment. The cost of a kidney transplant is about $23,000, plus $6,000 for annual medication.

That means, over a five-year period, the cost savings of a transplant versus dialysis treatment is about $250,000 per patient. That’s money that could go back into the health care system.

We’re not suggesting paying for organs, but incentives might motivate people to become donors.

If that doesn’t work, there may come a time when we’re forced to institute an opt-out system, through which you’re automatically on the registry unless you takes the steps to get off it.

That system works well in some countries, such as Spain and Austria, which have significantly higher organ donation rates than Canada.

Or maybe we’ll make a rule that says only people on the registry are eligible to be an organ recipient.

Change is obviously needed, but let’s give positive reinforcement a chance before resorting to systems that may carry negative connotations.

If mission was to turn Scanlon to ghost town, mission accomplished

from this letter will be to point out a season’s pass can be obtained for $50 (an additional $40 if you wish to use the dog walking area), which is quite a savings on the $10 daily rate and perhaps it was their intent from the beginning to direct (pressure, force) people to make that choice.

I don’t know the reasoning behind the outlandish fees and probably never will.

What I can say with certainty is that if the LSRCA’s intent was to drive people away, it’s mission accomplished.

Congratulations, again, you should all be very proud.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority on its implication of user fees on those wishing to enjoy what is a public open space.

The daily fee is substantial at $10 per vehicle, per visit and makes one wonder what was going through the board of directors’ collective minds.

BUSINESS: Board of Trade launches online petition

BBT seeks signatures in support of downtown town hall

The Bradford Board of Trade is putting out a call to action to try and convince the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury to locate its proposed administration centre in the downtown core.

In an e-mail earlier this week, the BBT sent out a link to an online petition and encouraged all who supported the idea of a downtown municipal administration centre to sign it. In the BBT’s opinion, a town hall in the core area could serve as an

anchor in the community and help revive the locale.

As of deadline, the petition lists 32 signatures. Its goal is 5,000.

Aside from the petition, the BBT also stressed its support for the Bradford Downtown Revitalization Committee.

“The Bradford Board of Trade, voice and advocacy for businesses in Bradford is in support of the promotion of the Bradford Downtown Revitalization Com-

mittee (BDRC), which The BBT now has an official seat on,” the e-mail said. “Two BBT directors, Janet Chulau and Wayne Brakeboer also chair a BBT downtown sub-committee to go directly to council and the BDRC with questions and concerns regarding the revitalization of BWG’s downtown.”

Furthermore, the region posits that planned infrastructure improvements, such as the widening of Hwy. 400 and a new interchange on Hwy. 400 at the 5th Line, will solve some local issues, but do little to solve the larger issue of how traffic will make its way from Hwy. 400 to Hwy. 404. All of that information only serves to reconfirm the need for some kind of Hwy. 400-404 link, the region’s report added.

Having seen the traffic models, it’s difficult to fathom how anyone could say that a need for a link between Hwy. 400 and Hwy. 404 isn’t there, Mr. White said.

“It’s just common sense,” he said. “You look at the traffic modeling and it’s just a nobrainer.”

It’s expected a meeting between staff from the various municipalities involved will be set up at some point in the near future.

A proposal to develop a landscape contracting operation on an agricultural property near County Road 27 and the 3rd Line may face stiff opposition if the standingroom-only crowd at Tuesday’s public planning meeting is any indication.

The lands are zoned Agricultural “A”, but the applicant, Hermanns Realco Inc., is seeking an amendment to allow a landscape contracting operation along with the cultivation of nursery stock. If approved, the proposal contemplates that a 10-hectare working area would be established on the 32-ha property consisting of eight coveralls, a two-storey office building, warehouse and mechanical building, processing and product storage area and parking for 95 vehicles. The remaining 22-ha area would be used to grow trees and other plants.

In his report to council, director of planning and development services, Geoff McKnight, noted that while provincial, county and municipal planning policies do permit secondary and agriculture-related uses provided they are small in scale and close in proximity to a farm, the current proposal doesn’t fit the definitions. He also indicated staff has received 14 written submissions outlining concerns or objections to the proposal.

Many of those submissions questioned why what appears to be an industrial/commercial operation would be permitted on agricultural land, while others voiced concerns the issues with the Hermanns’ site on the 2nd Line, pertaining to dust, noise and odour, would be repeated if the new pro-

A number of those same fears were voiced Tuesday.

Speaking on behalf of the Gateway to Simcoe Community Association, planner Kristine Loft argued the proposal went far beyond the permitted uses and would be better suited to an industrial area. The size of the proposed operation and the number of proposed buildings make it difficult to classify it as small-scale, she said.

“This is an industrial operation. They will employ some on-site production, but there will also be a significant amount of imported product; the amount of imported product is unknown.”

Resident Don Jacobs said his primary concern was the loss of prime agricultural land. “In this country, we need to protect as much prime agricultural land as possible,” he said. “Cement grows nothing.”

Appearing on behalf of Hermanns, planner Keith MacKinnon of KLM Planning Partners Inc. stressed 68 per cent of the property would be taken up by the nursery and added the trees would provide a significant buffer for the surrounding properties and County Road 27.

“It’s a nursery,” he said. “You can’t get any more agricultural than that.”

“It’s important to realize this can be considered a local success story,” Mr. MacKinnon said, adding the operation would bring in a number of new full and part-time jobs.

“It also leaves plenty of room to grow.”

Mr. MacKinnon said his client is eager to work with the town and residents. “We’ve heard the concerns and are willing to work through them to come to a mutual resolution that will benefit everybody,” he said.

council to support the proposal and direct town staff to work with the region toward developing a joint communication strategy to advocate for the sought-after bypass.

“The County (of Simcoe) wholeheartedly supports the link between Hwy. 400 and Hwy. 404 as does York Region council,” Mayor Doug White said. “I guess the reality here is that York Region seems to have far more clout with this government than Simcoe County does.”

Essentially, the aforementioned study intends to perform a more detailed analysis of boundary area travel to assist the region and the county in advocating for boundary transportation improvements such as the Bradford bypass. The results of the study will also help both upper tier municipalities provide input into the MTO’s Simcoe Area Transportation System Review Study currently being undertaken in support of the Provincial Growth Plan for Simcoe County and will hopefully make a compelling case for the 400-404 link to be included in the province’s document.

The report from the region indicates that York-Simcoe cross boundary travel grew more than 16 per cent between 2001 and 2011 with the majority of the traffic concentrated on Yonge Street, Hwy. 400 and Hwy. 27. Taking into account the population and employment growth anticipated in York Region and Simcoe County, the region estimates that all three cross boundary roads will become congested

if no work is done to improve cross boundary travel by 2031. The region also suggests that Yonge and Hwy. 400, in particular, will be well over capacity.

School Athletics. It is completely organized by volunteer teachers and students from the school along with some help from the Town of BWG and support from South Simcoe Police. It is a 5 km run and a 2.5 km walk event that happen simultaneously. Registration can be done online, by mail or in person. The price goes up $5 if you wait until the last minute. The organizers have received support from several generous sponsors in town to help make this a top notch event what it is.

Medals will be awarded to the top three males and females in each age group and there will be prizes for the top overall male/female runner.

Several random draw prizes will be given away as well, so anyone can win. Each registered participant will receive a special gift in their race kit.

An interesting twist to the event is the Team Competition. Teams of four (any age or sex) can combine and compete. All the times are agegraded which is a conversion that allows people of any age or sex to compare results. See the website for a more-detailed explanation. As well as being a community 5 km event, CarrotFast has joined forces with the Ontario Masters Athletics Association and, for the second year, the race will be the host race for the OMA 5 km Road Championship. This means that members of OMA who participate in the CarrotFast run will also be competing for prizes in their OMA age groups.

DEIGAN, Charles Arthur Passed away on August 5, 2012 at age 92.

Former teacher at Northview Heights Secondary School, Central High School of Commerce, and other schools including Tokoroa High School in New Zealand. He loved to participate in and coach sports, and held the Toronto Parks Department senior record for hop, skip, and jump for many years from 1937. Former employee, Toronto Hydro. WWII veteran with RCAF. Author of Business Office Simulation System and Developing Office Typing Skills.

Survived by wife Brenda, children Russell Deigan, Glenda Deigan, and Eric (and Melinda) Deigan, grandchildren Monica Wappel, Christopher (and Andrea) Wappel, Veronica (and Mark) Conway, Victoria (and Paul) Cade, Vanessa Wappel, Katie Deigan, Mike Deigan, and Maggie Deigan, as well as greatgrandchildren Brooke, Lanna, and Nolan Wappel.

Predeceased by parents Rose (Schwartz) and Francis Thomas Deigan, and brother Frank Deigan.

Fondly remembered by nieces and nephew, Lynn Rogers, Sandra Smallwood, and John Deigan, and their children.

KELLY-SIMPSON, Beatrice Gloria (Mollins) After a lengthy illness with Mesothelioma, Beatrice passed away August 4th, 2012 at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.

Formerly of Brighton and Trenton, she had resided in Newmarket for the last five years. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion - Br. #426, Christian Baptist Church - Newmarket and the Newmarket Senior Club (Key Notes Choir). Daughter of the late Beatrice (nee Johnson) and William Mollins.

Sister to the late Virginia Mollins Clift and wife of the late Robert Simpson. Lovingly remembered by children Carol King (John) of Newmarket, Gord Kirk (Ann) of Whitby, Gary Kirk (Ilka) of Maple Ridge, BC; Sisters Pearl Gale (William) and Harriet Gray of Cobourg and the late Virginia Clift; Brothers Edward Mollins (Marie) of Oshawa and Ronald Mollins (Darlene) of Little Britain. Also remembered by grandchildren John King (Heather), Derek King (Jackie), Paul Kirk (Ruth) and Brian Kirk and Great Grandchildren Shawna, Rachel, Jesse, Hailey, Elizabeth, Heather Rose and Rachel.

Rev. Harry Mollins, Rev. Harry Taylor and Walter Mollins, deceased uncles of Beatrices' were a great inspiration both spiritually and musically in her early years. She studied at R.C.M. under the direction of Hazel Baer Scott. Privately with Mary Laughton, Madame Hicks Lyn and Harvey Dick. For many years she was the organist at the Brighton Baptist Church and the Salvation Army Church in Trenton, ON, and was also involved in many choirs throughout her life.She loved all music, however the classics and great old hymns of the church were her favorites.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Beatrice's Life will take place at the Christian Baptist Church, Main Street South, Newmarket on August 28th, 2012, at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Christian Baptist Church Restoration Fund or the Southlake Regional Health Centre Palliative Care Unit would be greatly appreciated.

Brian was a beloved son of the late Ruth Ramsbottom and Kenneth Smith and loving father of 28 years of Brian Smith Jr. Brian was a dedicated and loving brother to his siblings Wayne (Gaye), Brenda, Todd, Nancy (Scott), Connie (John) and Lisa (Mike). Brian was born on January 2nd, 1958. Brian Smith will always be loved and remembered by all friends and family.

He had a strong passion for literary arts, computer science and Martial arts.

Next inning, Connor Fudge at the plate, pitcher winds up and “WHAM” hits fudge right in the ear! Feeling shell shocked, Fudge with the heart of a lion dusts himself off and takes 1st base. Anyhow, Fox falls short last at bat and cannot come back.

Aug 2 East Gwillimbury – 3 Bradford Fox Racing – 15 The boys bounce back after suffering only their 2nd loss of the season last night in EG.Tonight Bradford came to play and that they did. After last nights beating (literally), your Bradford team played an incredible game allowing only 3 runs and struck out 7. Offensively all Bradford players hit, got on base and either scored or knocked in rbi’s. After 15 games, Bradford leads the MIDGET July 4 Bradford – 8 Innisfil – 8 Excellent game by both teams. Innisfil scoreless in last at bat to give Bradford Tie. July 12 Bradford – 9 Tottenham – 15 Tottenham team effort makes for an easy win. John and Mitch both go 4 for 4 at plate.

July 19 Newmarket – 7 Bradford - 20 Bradford pounds 20 runs to get easy win. Bed Reichert and Chris Cane both go 4 for 4 at the plate. Jamie Gerow make huge catch in LF to save runs. Excellent pitching shuts down Newmarket bats.

July 30 Tottenham – 9 Bradford – 11 Bradford Midgets come from behind last at bat to score 3 runs and steal win.

Bradford pitchers score 9 strike outs to slow Tottenham bats. Blair Cole, Ben Reichert and Chris Cain go 3 for 4 at the plate to lead way. Excellent effort by both teams,Tottenham looking like playoff contenders.
