n 24th April 1916, two flags were raised at the General Post Office in Dublin O and a Proclamation for the Republic was read out, marking the beginning of the Easter Rising and the movement to establish an Irish nation governed by its own people. Ireland’s struggle for independence was embodied by Michael Collins, who fought alongside Patrick Pearse during the Rising and went on to play a key role in negotiating the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921.

A hundred years on, the Bradford Exchange is proud to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising with the release of a very special tribute: The Mícheál Ó Coileáin Commemorative. Among these golden tributes is a commemorative that remembers Dublin’s Liberty Hall, the headquarters of rebellion leader James Connelly and birthplace of the Easter Rising. Key figures met here to plan the rebellion, and it was here that fighters assembled before marching to Dublin’s General Post Office on Easter Monday 1916.

Another commemorative in the collection honours Patrick Pearse, who read the Proclamation of the Republic setting out the ideals of liberty and equality for the independant nation of Ireland and was later executed for his part in the Easter Rising.

A true Irish hero, Michael Collins was a charismatic political leader who embodied the nation’s struggle for independence. Known across Ireland as the founder of the Irish Free State, he fought alongside Patrick Pearse at the General Post Office during the 1916 Easter Rising.

By the time of the General Election in 1918, he had been elected as an MP for Sinn Fein, becoming Minister of Finance when Dáil Éireann was established shortly afterwards. He went on to play a key role in negotiating the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, which led to the establishment of the Irish Free State in December 1922.

However, Collins would not live to see his dream fulfilled. He was assassinated on 22 August 1922 at Béal na Bláth - Ireland had gained its independence but lost one of its most inspiring and influential leaders.
