‘The Stars Over Australia’

Ten Pound Poms Silver Commemorative Set

In typical Aussie style, ‘Ten Pound Pom’ was a light-hearted reference to the heavily subsidised ten pound ocean liner fare people from Britain paid to emigrate to Australia under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme created by the Chifley government and its first Minister for Immigration, Arthur Calwell in 1945. By the end of the scheme in 1982 over a million UK migrants came to settle in Australia. Most adapted readily, glad to leave war-torn Britain for a warm, sunny, friendly, easy-going new land of wide-open spaces and opportunities – even though many were shocked by the tin-rooved hostel huts they were given to live in and some of the job opportunities they were promised never materialised. Those who did get work found that Australian wages were around fifty percent higher than England's, with tradespeople in particular demand, which helped them move out of the hostels and disappear seamlessly in Australian suburbia.

Ten Pound Poms 50mm Commemorative

In the aftermath of World War II, Australia faced a critical labour shortage. With much of the male population lost or incapacitated, and only 7.4 million people in the country, the government quickly introduced the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme to attract British migrants – nicknamed the ‘Ten Pound Poms’ due to the nominal £10 fare. Despite basic hostel accommodation and some unfulfilled job expectations, many adapted quickly, eager to seize every opportunity. While some eventually returned to Britain, many came back permanently - believing the £10 they paid to be best money they’d ever spent. To honour their resilience and contribution of The Ten Pound Poms, The Bradford Mint presents this exclusive 50mm Silver Commemorative. Struck in .999 silver to the highest numismatic standards, this richly detailed commemorative captures a young family’s hopeful journey from post-war Britain to the promise of Australia. The obverse features portraits of King George VI and a young Queen Elizabeth II, symbolising the era that shaped their migration.

As Australia’s most knowledgeable and experienced rare and unique coin collection service, we have one simple goal - to make coin collecting as accessible, inspiring and fun as our unrivalled experience and expertise allows. In this section of your March Showcase, that expertise extends itself to some of the rare, scarce and unique coins, notes and commemoratives which celebrate some of Australia’s historical milestones and pays tribute to those people who have made this country their home, and helped shape and build the modern, contemporary Australia we all enjoy today.

Australia's 1963-64 Six-Coin Set

It is interesting that it took Australia so long to make the switch to decimal currency. Various post-Federation Australian governments had considered decimalisation from as early as 1901, but they ultimately took their lead from Britain, which remained firmly against the idea. It wasn’t until the late 1950s that the Menzies government finally recognised the economic importance of converting Australia’s currency to a new decimalised one, in keeping with those of many of its trading partners and the overwhelming majority of the world.

The argument for switching came down to a simple practical consideration. The Australian pound, like its British counterpart, was divided into 20 shillings of 12 pence each, making the arithmetic of financial transactions unnecessarily difficult. This wasn’t just a question of personal convenience but of national productivity.

Research had shown that decimalisation would save the Australian economy more than £11 million a year, which would quickly offset the £30 million cost of conversion.

Australia 1963-64 Complete set of the very LAST predecimals, in UNCIRCULATED condition. Australia went decimal in 1966 - its last predecimal coins were dated 1963 (florin, shilling, sixpence) and 1964 (threepence, penny, halfpenny). This is a landmark set of coins that every household should own and we are able to offer it in Uncirculated condition housed in a presentation case allowing you to enjoy showing it to others.

Australia's Predecimal & Decimal Changeover Banknote Set

Today, a decimal system based on 100 cents to the dollar seems obvious, but at the time it was one of the biggest social adjustments that Australians had ever had to make in their daily lives. The banknotes of that era are a vivid reminder of Australia in the 1960’s, and this elegant collector’s set brings together a full set of the last predecimal banknotes along with the full set of the notes that took their place. The four predecimal notes are: ten shilling, one pound, five pounds and ten pounds. These are the only type of predecimal note from the reign of (a very young) Queen Elizabeth II and have the signatures of the Bank and Treasury officials, H. C. Coombs and Roland Wilson.

The matching four decimal notes are the one dollar, two dollars, ten dollars and twenty dollars. All four are from the very first issue of decimal notes which started in 1966. They bear the same signatures as their predecimal counterparts - Coombs and Wilson - as both still held their respective positions through this period. We have sets of eight notes available in different levels of quality, priced accordingly. Each set is housed in a highly informative hardbound folio style presentation which relates the stories behind the designs on each note and tells the story of the change. It’s worth remembering these are all paper banknotes that are now around sixty years old, that tell the story of one of the biggest changes in our nation’s currency.

Victory in The Pacific Commemorative Set

Most of the thousands of Australians captured in the first months of 1942, during the conquest of Malaya, Singapore and New Britain were held in extremely harsh and depraved conditions. Imprisoned in camps across the Asia-Pacific region, many endured long voyages in grossly overcrowded ships. While most of the Australian POWs who died in Japanese captivity were the victim of deliberate malnutrition and disease, hundreds were deliberately killed by their guards. The Burma–Thai Railway was the most notorious of the prisoner of war experiences, as 13,000 Australians worked on it at various times during 1942 and 1943, with almost 2,650 Australians dying there. Thousands of Australian POWs were also sent to the Japanese home islands where they worked in factories and mines in generally harsh conditions. The POWs held in camps at Ambon and Borneo suffered the highest death rates – 77% of those at Ambon died and few of the 2,500 Australian prisoners in Borneo survived - almost all killed by overwork and a

The Lost Boys of Gallipoli Commemorative Coin

Singular amongst all of the tragedies of WWI, was that thousands of young boys from Australia and New Zealand lied about their age and falsified parental consent forms to enlist as an ANZAC. Suddenly under shot and shell at the ill-fated shores of Gallipoli, many boys succumbed immediately on the rugged ridges. The youngest known was only 14 years of age – just one amongst a legion, who were well under the permitted age of 21 – and only whose photos and details were found and made available. All the Lost Boys of Gallipoli who fought and fell are represented on this .999 Silver five crowns commemorative coin –the poignancy of their selfless sacrifice reflected in the finely etched engraving of their details, which serves to highlight both their sheer youth and innocence. Beneath the looming shadow of the fate that awaited them, their courage and eagerness to serve are also clearly shown. The solemn statement ‘Lest We Forget’ salutes their young, eager courage, whilst above reads their sad fate, ‘They Remain Forever Young’. Gallipoli Landing and Birth of The ANZAC Legend Commemorative Coin

Born on that ill-fated battlefield of Gallipoli on 25th April 1915, the ANZAC Spirit still burns bright in the breast of all sons and daughters who have served. From Gallipoli to the Western Front, Berlin to Long Tanand every major Allied conflict over the last 100 years - their courage and determination are an inspiration to us all. Which is why this ‘Gallipoli Landing and Birth of The ANZAC Legend Silver Commemorative Coin’ is possibly one of the most important commemorative coins we’ve ever created. Exclusive to The Bradford Mint, this .999 Silver, 5 ounce, 65mm, Ten Crown Commemorative Coin bears the names of 28 bloody battle grounds of Gallipoli – scenes of crushing combat resulting in countless deaths and casualties. These surround two silent sentinels beneath a single ruby red Svenka™ crystal, with heads bowed and upturned rifles, as they remember their lost mates. On the obverse, the effigy of King Charles III is finely portrayed to the highest numismatic standards, creating a fitting tribute to those who fought and fell for our freedom. Australian Forces Arrive at Vung Tau Commemorative Coin

On June 8, 1965, the HMAS Sydney III – a former aircraft carrier refitted for troop transport – arrived at Vung Tau, carrying the bulk of the Australian forces, including the 1RAR. Moving battle by battle under intense and unprecedented war conditions, our troops fought communist forces in Phuoc Tuy and the surrounding provinces. Distinguishing themselves at Long Tan, Coral-Balmoral, Binh Ba and Long Khanh, as well as minor skirmishes, often in hand-to-hand combat with an enemy indistinguishable from civilians, the Australians added to the ANZAC Legend. Tales of their mateship, courage and sacrifice were lost under negative media back home. The Viet Cong’s massive 1968 Tet Offensive, though a military failure, convinced many Australians that decisive victory was impossible, whilst horrific scenes on television sapped public support further. Eventually the government withdrew troops and the last arrived home in December 1972. Some 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, where 521 died and over 3,000 were wounded. Today, we recognise our Vietnam Veterans with this .999 Silver commemorative coin. We salute those who fought in a war unlike any other. The King of The Mountain Silver Dollar Two-Coin Set

As we celebrate what would have been his 80th birthday, this incredible collectable pays tribute to a colourful, courageous career spanning more than three decades, including 212 starts and 48 wins. Of special note is his seemingly endless run of wins at Bathurst - a gruelling endurance event he won a record nine times, beginning in 1972. Many of Peter Brock’s winning margins at Bathurst remain unequalled - his multi-lap leads and an incredible circuit-lap victory in 1982 of particular note. Taking pole position in six starts out of 32 - an extraordinary achievement in itself – is it any wonder he was hailed ‘King of the Mountain’, a title he earned whilst breaking a record during practice, followed by the race itself. After starting with rough-and-ready cars - including a dilapidated old Austin he had restored himself - Peter Brock was born to race and soon became

Snowy Hydro Silver Commemorative

Snowy Mountain Hydro-Electric Scheme of 1949-1974 represents Australian ingenuity, ambition, inclusion and mate-ship at its best. This massive pioneering project saw tens of thousands of post-war immigrants from over thirty nations make up around two thirds of its workforce. Many were refugees from war-torn Europesome of them former enemies - who united to provide essential skills and manpower, contributing significantly to the country which had become their home. In total, over 100,000 men and women worked on the project, housed throughout seven nearby towns. New schools were set up to educate the children, benefitting both them and Australia in the years to come. The importance of the Snowy Mountain project to Australia’s self-worth as a nation and the unity of its citizens, especially after the rigours and sacrifices of the war years, was important in a nationalistic

prominent in the sport - progressing rapidly to become a constant winner in major events. His legendary duels with other race greats, are still spoken of with awe whenever anyone harks back to his golden era of racing. Peter also supported many important community causes, including his anti-drink-driving campaign and road safety initiatives, plus the Peter Brock Foundation to assist those in crisis – eventually being awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1980 – a richly deserved accolade. Which is why The Bradford Mint is very proud to recognise and commemorate what would have been the 81st birthday of the late, great Peter Brock, with this ‘King of the Mountain Silver Commemorative $1 Two- Coin Set’ – an exclusive limited edition of only 199 available in Australia.
