FROM THE OFFICE OF HUMAN RESOURCES For November, we will focus on the Core Value: We treat each other with respect and compassion. This value is essential as we all work together towards achieving our mission to prepare students to become leaders in their communities. Faculty and staff play a significant role in the lives of our students and we can achieve so much more when we work together in a respectful and compassionate manner. Last month’s Community Presentation: BPU Works Together highlighted a variety of initiatives HR will be implementing to support all of you. The HR team is actively working together to operationalize the initiatives and may call on some of you for input. The initiatives were based on your feedback and we will continue to listen and evolve as needed. We know that you receive many emails and we hope to reduce our output by leveraging this newsletter. We hope you can take a few moments to read through the November edition of the Human Resources Newsletter. We hope you enjoy and happy reading! Inside this issue you will find updates regarding the Core Values Committee, BPU Community (Pathify) and more. We recognize Veteran's Day and highlight two staff members who have courageously served our country. You will also find a list of community events, both internal and external, and don't forget to participate in Spirit Week!

HUMAN RESOURCES NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER 2022

CORE VALUE OF THE MONTH WE TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT AND COMPASSION We treat others the way they want to be treated: with respect, dignity, and professionalism. We value the expertise and contributions brought by all our university community members and strive to understand one another, listen generously, and act with kindness, compassion, and patience.

For the month of November, we are putting a special emphasis on the Core Value: "We treat others with respect and compassion." Below you will find examples provided from the Community Week session and from other community conversations so that you can think about how you can intentionally incorporate the Core Values into your work. Here are the ways YOU are committing to that Core Value in your work: Acknowledge our differences and have respect for all ideas. Respect students with challenging situations and/or circumstances, as the wellbeing of our students comes first. We have to hold ourselves accountable. Model respect and compassion in all interactions, and understand/hear where students are coming from and what they bring with them (their story), stating clear intentions without judgment. Be person-centered, and create positive and safe environments conducive to growth. Learn all students names and how to pronounce them correctly. Be more flexible with students and/or colleagues in terms of deadlines and work schedules. Do not add to the heavy loads of stress that the world already puts on each of us. Build trust between supervisors and subordinates. Be able to be honest without fear of repercussions. Create a culture of people who care. For the sake of our health and well-being it is okay to set boundaries. Focus on the task tension instead of on relationships. Incorporate group bonding/check-in activities Happy rocks/gratitude rocks Creating "pause" time/relaxation rooms Create more clubs for staff and faculty Designated vent time

HUMAN RESOURCES NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER 2022

VETERAN'S DAY Veteran's Day is celebrated to acknowledge and pay tribute to those who have risked their lives for their country. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices they have made to serve the greater American public. In honor of this holiday, we sat down with two of our very own BPU Veterans, Dawn Batchelor and Joshua Plouffe, to learn more about their time in the military.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Dawn Batchelor, Senior Assistant Director of Student Financial Services and Veterans Administration Education Benefits Liaison, served in the U.S. Air Force for six years as administrative personnel working for the aerial port unit. Unsure of her path in life and with a desire to travel, she enlisted with the hope of exploring new opportunities. Self-discovery was a life-changing outcome of her time in the military. While on duty, she found confidence in herself that she never thought she could have. She was surprised by her own strength and ability to accomplish things she never believed that she could. While in the service, Batchelor made lifelong friends who quickly became family to her. She stays in close contact with her fellow service members to this day even from across the country. Dawn believes that it is not always understood by civilians just how dedicated Veterans are to their country. The sacrifice to be away from family and friends is an enormous one and it is done for the sake of freedom.

We want to sincerely thank both Dawn and Josh for their service and for sharing their stories with us. Remember to thank your Veterans on Friday, November 11, 2022.

WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Joshua Plouffe, Business Analyst, served in the U.S. Army for eight years following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Plouffe was at a pivotal stage in his life when the attack occurred, and as a strong patriot, he made the decision to enlist when he became of age. Plouffe served in front line units in North Carolina, Korea, and Iraq, and served as an army medic at West Point. He looks back at his time in Korea the most fondly as he gained the exposure he always craved to meet new people and have new cultural experiences. Looking back on his time served, his biggest takeaway was the overwhelming sense of comradery felt by his fellow service members from all walks of life. Every person he spoke to had a completely different story and background and yet none of it mattered as they were all united as one force. This gave Plouffe a newfound sense of awareness as a young man which he has carried into his adulthood. He learned to focus on what brings people together rather than focus on what divides them. To this day, Plouffe has remained very close friends with his fellow service members and has built relationships all across the country and around the world. If Plouffe were asked if he would do anything differently with his life, he would reply, “No, I wouldn’t. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I was lucky to come out with ten fingers and ten toes and was grateful for the life experience I made during my time in the military.” Plouffe uses Veteran’s Day as a chance to reconnect with his friends from the military and reflect on the memories made during that period in his life.
