100 Black Men of Stamford

A warm welcome to all our supporters and friends at the 22nd Annual Scholarship Golf Classic of the 100 Black Men of Stamford, Inc. (“100 BMOS”). We are thankful that you chose to spend your day at the beautiful Rockrimmon Country Club for a truly wonderful cause.

The 100 BMOS works unceasingly to improve the quality of life for all in the communities we serve. Intergenerational mentoring, educational enrichment and merit-based scholarships are integral parts of our mission. Our goal is to transform the lives of disenfranchised youth – especially African Americans in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Our chapter blends an immensely talented group of strong, focused and energetic men to support the emotional and academic growth of Fairfield County youth. We sincerely thank each and every one of you –our sponsors, golfers, friends, colleagues, and community partners – for your generous and unwavering support of the 100 BMOS mission.

Scholarship recipients. We will honor outstanding students that are becoming dynamic and inclusive leaders. It takes a tremendous amount of work to coordinate this day of fundraising. Thanks to the leadership of Golf Co-Chairmen – Olivier Kpognon and Curt Battles – and the entire Golf Committee that have worked tirelessly to make this day wonderful for all.

We really appreciate your continued support of our mission and hope that you have a phenomenal day!

We are sincerely honored and grateful that Kathy Silard, President & CEO

Stamford Health., is joining us today to celebrate our 2023

The 100 Black Men is a national organization founded in New York City over 20 years ago. It has over 100 chapters globally. The idea was to create a group of African American men who intended to make a difference in the lives of kids.

Our chapter, The 100 Black Men of Stamford, Inc., was founded in 1993, as a non-profit community action organization comprised of successful men committed to improving the educational and economic conditions for African Americans and others in need, with a particular focus on the development of youth. We are an affiliate of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.

As our world continues to change, nurturing young people is the best way to ensure the success of our collective future. Guiding today’s youth in becoming well-educated prepared adults is a moral imperative and practical benefit to our whole society.

Limiting the height of the follow-through will effectively reduce the height of your shots. The lower the hands, the lower the ball flight. Moving the ball back in your stance or choosing a stronger club and trying to swing easy are other ways to accomplish the same thing, but they’re less reliable and more difficult to execute. Instead, keep your hands low in the finish, and the trajectory of your shots will be lower.

Make sure you’re on-plane at the top of the swing to guarantee solid ball striking and increased accuracy. Notice in the photo at left how my right forearm is parallel to my spine, my left wrist is flat and my elbows and arms form a tight triangle. These are indications that I’ve rotated my shoulders into the backswing perfectly.

Every good golfer knows that power comes from the body, not the arms. To learn to power the club with your body instead of your arms and hands, put the club behind the ball at address, with your body in a dead-stop position. Without taking a backswing, try to drag the ball into the air. If you’re a player who uses his or her hands to control the club, you’ll probably struggle at first. However, you’ll quickly find that once you start moving the club with your body, you’ll be-gin to get the ball in the air more consistently. This helps you turn fully through the ball on the downswing.

An open face at the point of contact can cause a slice. So, too, can a faulty swing path, even if your clubface is square to the target at impact. Slicers’ swing paths tend to come too much outside in (hookers, vice versa). All golfers need a path that comes just slightly from the inside. Try the Box Drill. Take the top half of a golf ball box and stand it on its side. Align the box parallel to your target line as shown. Strive to groove a path that allows the shaft to pass just over the box. For slicers, set up the box on the same line, but just forward of the golf ball. Don’t hit the box!
