1. Introduction We take democracy, freedom and peace in Europe for granted. We are used to travelling around Europe without having to show an identity card at the borders.

Especially for young European citizens, life without borders is natural. But has it always been like that? The aim of the project is to raise awareness that this has not always been the case. The planned activities and meeting places give the opportunity to deepen the knowledge of young people about the changes that took place in Europe after World War II and their consequences (border changes, displacement, population migrations), also to improve the skills of using ICT tools and learn about the history, culture and contemporary life of our partners.

It also aims at raising awareness that there are similarities between history and the present.

The project tasks aimed at achieving the above goals:

➢ Participants in three schools do the research how the borders of their countries changed as a result of World War II (October 2018); ➢ Students work in groups on the presentations about the changes on the borders (the task presented at the mobility in Frankfurt /Main, December 2018); the project logo competition; ➢ Students record voice description of the changes on the borders in English and send the recordings to the Italian school (March 2019); ➢ At the short-term exchange in Wrocław (May 2019) students attend the lecture “Microcosm” on the expulsion, resettlements and population migrations and the workshop titled “A suitcase”; they also visit Oskar Schindler’s Factory Museum on the trip to Kraków; ➢ At the exchange in Como and Trieste (October 2019) the participants get acquainted with the cruelty at the Yugoslavian – Italian border at the end of World War II and during a few years after it while visiting Foiba in Basovizza, Padriciano – the post war camp for refugees, Museo della Risiera di San Sabba in Trieste; ➢ The final exchange in Strasbourg and Frankfurt includes the visit to the European Parliament site in Strasbourg with the workshop for students in May 2020* and to European Central Bank and “Erinnerungsstatte Grossmarkthalle” in Frankfurt /Main. *the exchange postponed till spring 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic.

➢ While doing the whole project the participants experience the mobility meetings in European cities, they experience free travelling without borders within the European Union at the same time.

The multimedia "Talking Map" presenting the territorial changes and migrations of people after World War II and the e-book are the result of cooperation between young people and teachers from Germany, Italy and Poland.

The content has been collected and the e-book designed by the Polish coordinator, Bożena Ferens, in cooperation with the managing Erasmus+ project coordinator, Chiara Longoni-Neff, the Italian teacher in charge of the project, Luisa Bianco and the students involved in the project.

According to EU GDPR (European Union General Data Protection Regulation), all participants have agreed in writing to share their images and names for the purpose of documenting and promoting the Erasmus+ “Young citizens in Europe: Living without borders” project.

LA PROVINCIA DI COMO, Date: 7thNovember 2018 Erasmus project. German and Polish guests at the Magistri. „The exchange. A delegation of teachers and students at the Magistri in Lazzago. You breath air of Europe at the Magistri Cumacini. In fact, in these days, a delegation of teachers and students from Germany and Poland were guests of Magistri: from Sunday till today, various activities have been carried out together with Italian colleagues. This happened thanks to the Erasmus plus project "Young Citizens in Europe: living without borders", able to network different schools and experiences. This year, it was the turn of Zespół Szkół EkonomicznoOgólnokształcących in Wrocław and Franz-Böhm-Schule in Frankfurt. Around 250 German, Polish and Italian students will take part in the project. For the Magistri Cumacini the number exceeds one hundred: in fact, six classes have been involved, specifically the third and fourth years of Construction, Electrotechnics and Mechanics.

What is the goal of the project?

First of all, to make young people grow in greater awareness of the importance of the values written in the "European DNA" such as peace, democracy and freedom.

The ambitious result to be achieved will not give these themes as obvious, but should be an opportunity for reflection on the devastating consequences in the past in not respecting them (and, potentially, in the future).

For this reason, from 2018 to 2020, the students of the three countries will exchange information (strictly in English) on some tragic events happened at the borders of the nations in the past.

Obviously, exchanges of groups of students and meetings do not end today. The students from Como will in fact go to Germany next December and to Poland in spring next year.”

Italian and Polish students comment on the meeting

By Samuele: Report of Wednesday 7th November: Three Polish students and two German teachers, Theresa and Sebastian arrived in our class in Magistri Cumacini around nine o'clock. We started by introducing ourselves and welcomed the guests to our school. Our primary aim was to make them interested in our

engineering class and explain how Italian schools work. First we visited our mechanical laboratory where we explained some of our computerized lathes and how they work, after that we went to the material testing laboratory where we showed the traction machines and some of the mechanical tests we can do. After a short break we went to the systems laboratory where our teacher Mr. Averta helped us with the explanation of the things we do in the laboratory. Then we went to all the other mechanical related laboratories and with the help of our classmates we explained the guests what we do and what we are going to do during the rest of the school years. We even went to the energy laboratory where one of the students explained some of their work. Around eleven o'clock we had a break and went to our classroom where we talked to each other and watched some videos of the Polish girls' school in Wrocław, which was pretty cool!

Hello everyone, here there's a report of Tuesday 6th November afternoon's trip to Milan, I hope you enjoyed that! After the classroom activity in the morning, the teachers and students guests have met us (4aMM1 pupils) in the school canteen at midday. Then we had some nice slices of pizza all together. Immediately after lunch, we walked to the train station with Polish girls and when the teachers also arrived there, we bought the tickets and took the train to Milan.

At 2 p.m. we were in the city center, so we went to Sforzesco castle (the beautiful residence of Milan's dukes from the renaissance age) and the close "Sempione" park with the "Bonaparte" bow; there we told our visitors something about the city and the castle's history. After that, we walked all together along Via Dante, the main road of Milan which carries from the castle to the Duomo place, and once arrived in front of the cathedral (the fourth biggest church in the world), we have taken some nice group photos. Then we quickly visited San Satiro's church, which contains inside some wonderful frescoes, by the great painter Bramante, and finally we have walked across "King Vittorio Emanuele II" gallery to reach the famous theater "alla Scala", where we had two hours of free time to hang out in the city with our Polish friends. At half past six p.m. students and teachers met in front of the Duomo and together reached the restaurant, where we had a lovely buffet-dinner with a big choice of Italian specialities. After dinner we went to the train station to go back home, having a beautiful view of Milan by night, with the lights of the castle and the shops along the roads, and after an hour of travel we finally arrived in Como, ready to sleep and then to meet each other again the day after in our classroom. By Riccardo: TRIP TO MILAN AND COMO We spent two days visiting Como and Milan. In the afternoon of the first day we visited Como. We met the three Polish girls and German and Polish teachers. We started from Porta Torre then we entered the old town of Como. We visited the cathedral and arrived at the lake.

The second day we went to Milan. We took the train from the station near Magistri and we got off in Cadorna. We went to the Castello Sforzesco and we explained its history and its structure briefly. Then we continued towards the cathedral where we described it and Saint Satiro’s church to the girls and teachers. Then we went through the Milan gallery where we made a gesture that brings good luck. Then we had some free time where we visited a bit of Milan and later we ate in a restaurant.

By Oliwia: “I would like to describe our first day in the Italian school. On Monday, 5thNovember 2018, we arrived at Magistri Cumacini school in the morning. At the beginning we were greeted by the Italian students. Next we went to the meeting with the school headmaster. In his office there was an official greeting of Polish and German teachers and students, and giving presents. After that the Italian students led us to their class, where they showed us their interesting electronic projects (a hand with motion sensors and tic-tac-toe game).

Then there were integration games. Later we (me with Julia and Kasia) showed them the movie about Wrocław and the presentation about our school. Around 12 o’clock we went together for lunch. After lunch we went sightseeing in the centre of Como. We watched beautiful views and monuments, whose story was told in English by the Italian students. After that we had free time. At 7p.m. we went to Lenno- near Como. We visited the church there, and later we went to Mrs Longoni’s house, where we had the opportunity to try delicious Italian dishes. It was an exhausting but enjoyable day and I will remember it :)”.

By Kasia: “On the second day of our visit in Como we were invited to I.T.I.S. "Magistri Cumacini" school by the students from 4mm1- they are mechanical/mechatronic/electric class. They showed us the machines and materials with which they work mostly every day. We had the opportunity to learn more about them and the jobs that they are preparing to. The time that we spent there was informative, fascinating and funny. We couldn't get bored. After all we had lunch with teachers in a very cozy restaurant. The food was very delicious and everyone had a great time. Unfortunately, that was the last time we spent with teachers from Italy and Germany because together with Julia and Oliwia, we left the restaurant right after lunch to meet our friends from another class. We went shopping with them and for a walk along the lake. Unluckily, our free time was over and we had to come back with our teachers to the hotel. We want to thank every student and every teacher who took part in the project. Thank you for having us in Como, we're very grateful and we can't wait to meet some of you in Frankfurt also we'll be waiting for Italian and German students in Poland”.

By Julia: On our third day in Como we arrived at school at 9 am. The students that were waiting for us showed us some models of big constructions. One of them was about Camerlata fountain. It represents the voltaic pile, which is the pile that was invented by Alessandro Volta, and it is there because he was born in Como.

Then we went to the construction class and they showed us some topography machines, that they use in their laboratories. At 12 we had lunch at the school canteen with some students and the teachers. Then we went to the train station to take the train for Milano. We arrived at Cadorna train station after half an hour.

Near the train station there is the Castello Sforzesco, which is a medieval castle of the Sforza family. It was destroyed in the Second World War, so what we visited was a reconstruction. The frontside view of the castle was great, and from there we also saw the Arco Sempione, an ancient Roman gate in Milan. Next we went to Vittorio Emanuele II gallery's, which are galleries in Duomo square in where there are the most expensive shops in Milan. The Duomo is the cathedral of Milano and it was built in the 15th century. It took like 100 years to finish and it is one of the biggest cathedrals in the world. In the afternoon we had free time.

The Boys took us to try Italian coffee, the esspresso. It is so strong but it's good.

Then we had a walk in the city, talking and taking photos. After the free time we met our teachers near the Duomo and we went to the restaurant. It was a buffet with Italian specialities, like carbonara, pizza and cold rice. Then we went back by train to Como. It was gorgeous. We can't wait to see all of you in Frankfurt following meetings in Poland and Italy”.

3. Short-term exchange of groups of students – mobility in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, 5-8 December 2018 THREE DAYS WITH 120 PUPILS FROM ITALY, POLAND AND GERMANY by Chiara Longoni-Neff From the 2nd to the 5th of December, as part of the ERASMUS + project "YOUNG CITIZENS IN EUROPE: LIVING WITHOUT BORDERS", the pupils of the Franz Böhm School met the exchange students from long-term partner schools Zespół Szkół Ekonomiczno-Ogólnokształcących in Wroclaw / Poland and ITIS MAGISTRI CUMACINI in Como / Italy.

More than 120 students from the three nations participate in the project. Seventy pupils of the partner schools came to Frankfurt.

After a reception on Sunday evening in a traditional Frankfurt pub, the official programme started on Monday morning with a joint kick-off event in our cafeteria. In addition to our ERASMUS+ teacher initiators: Ms. Chiara Longoni-Neff and Ms. Marta Tomaszewska, the German school principal, Ms. Angelika Fieberg, also welcomed the international guests.

Ms. Alin Pagin, representative of the Media Center Frankfurt, sensitized the students with a keynote speech in English on the topic "Hate speech and how to spot fake news". Regarding the variety of news circulating on the Internet she explained and gave us examples on how to recognize "fake news". Afterwards, in a group work phase, the students put to practice the newly acquired knowledge.

Monday afternoon was dedicated to exploring our city of Frankfurt. After a “stormy” visit to the Main Tower viewing platform, the German pupils showed their guests the city, in small groups. The rally carried out in the groups led them to the beautiful and well-known squares of the city.

On Tuesday morning we travelled together to the state capital Wiesbaden. A visit to the castle Freudenberg and the experience field stations there, such as the dark

bar, the sound space or the oversized balance plate, enabled us experimental, interactive and dialogical experiences.

The students then showed our guests the city of Wiesbaden. The results of the "Selfie-Rally" are great shots.

On the third day the presentations of the previously elaborated contents to the project topic "Living without borders" were shown. The students, in groups, presented their results and then exchanged their views on them. The intensive examination of the subject moved above all the consequences of borders for the underlying human fate in the foreground and made clear again the importance of European cohesion.

The design of a common logo for our project was another successful milestone.

In the afternoon, the learners had the choice of one of four places to visit: Experimenta, a tour of Frankfurt Airport, a workshop at the Filmmuseum or a visit to the Escape Room.

Our farewell party in the cafeteria was another highlight of the exchange meeting.

On the one hand because of the international delicious buffet prepared by the German students, on the other hand because of the great atmosphere, which arose above all because of the numerous close relationship among the participants.

Department head Ulrike Janßen has said farewell to the international guests.

Thanks to Luka, the DJ of the evening, who encouraged the group to dance and created a great atmosphere.

Shortly before midnight, it was time to say "bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao". However, it is more a "goodbye", because we look forward to seeing all those involved in the project in May next year in Wroclaw, Poland, where the next project meeting will take place.

The final conclusion is that on these three intensive days numerous contacts between the participating students were made, friendships developed and, above all, interest and desire for the culture of the others arose. From perspective of the teachers, it was especially gratifying to see that the communication in English was successful.

The ERASMUS+ project allows us all unforgettable experiences that not only enrich us personally, but certainly also positively influence our regular school life in a positive way.

Students’ comments on the meeting 4.12.2018 – day 2 in Frankfurt, Tuesday After breakfast we set off to Wiesbaden to the centre of experience – Schloss Freudenberg Wiesbaden. There we were divided into 5 international groups. We spent almost 3 hours there. The guide familiarized us with exhibits and scientific experiments. The exhibitions concerned all the senses – for example, the senses of sight or hearing. We had activities related to colours and shadow. We also had to do a task related to the sense of touch.

At the very end there was the most pleasant activity: we were led into a special room. There were various gongs and bowls. Thanks to the sense of hearing, we

could experience sound and total relaxation. Then we went to Wiesbaden for dinner. We could integrate with our international groups at a meal together.

After the meal we were to do the task in small groups. We took photos of each other at the Wiesbaden monuments. We had a great time with our group.

Later, we returned to the hotel in Frankfurt and prepared our projects and presentations for the next day. In the evening we managed to go for a walk around the beautiful Christmas market. Written by: Wiktoria and Marysia On the third day of our student exchange, We arrived at FRANZ-BÖHMSCHOOL in the morning. The time has come to present the results of our researches on the historical events. That was a great experience. Then there was a short break during which we took a photo of all participants of the meeting.

After the break we came back to our classes and worked on ERASMUS+ logo project. The cooperation was very fruitful and we had a great time. After lunch we were divided into smaller groups according to the activity we wanted to do.

We had a choice of places to visit: the Frankfurt Airport, Film Museum, Escape Room, ExperiMinta.

At the airport we were moving around on its plate by bus where we saw closely the whole range of planes. We also could see planes which were taking off. After all those attractions we came back to the hostel and we had dinner. Then at 7:30 p.m. we went to FRANZ-BÖHM-SCHOOL for a farewell party for the participants and organizers of the project. There was delicious food, great music and amazing atmosphere. It was hard to say goodbye to them and all of us had tears in our eyes. by: Ola and Adrian

4. Short-term exchange of groups of students in Wrocław, 26-28 May 2019

At the previous meeting, in Frankfurt, students from three partner schools: FranzBöhm-Schule Frankfurt /Main, Germany, I.T.I.S. MAGISTRI Cumacini from Como, Italy, and our School of Economics, discussed presentations in teams on how the borders of our countries changed after World War II. Being aware that changes in state borders are not just historical facts, but events that affect the fate of individual people and their families, and even residents of entire villages and cities because of the change of nationality, this time we decided to take a closer look at the fate of people forced to leave their homes, abandon their possessions and go into the unknown. Such a plan led us to the crucial part of the event.

On Monday morning the meeting was opened by the ZSE-O principal, Ms. Jolanta Marecik, warmly welcoming the guests.

The kick-off was given by Mr. Grzegorz Samotiuk, a history teacher, with a lecture on resettlements after World War II, probably the largest migration movement in the history of Europe.

The keynote address, “The Microcosm" was delivered by Ph.D. Bogodar Zielnica, an English teacher at the School of Banking, and privately a researcher of the history of the town in which he has been living for several years. Wińsko has gained fame thanks to Rita Steinhardt Botwinick who was longing for her home village. She wrote her doctoral thesis entitled "Wińsko 1933-1946", which was later translated into Polish by our guest speaker.

“Microcosm" in a nutshell is a story about all aspects related to World War II, which we focus on in the project. The story of the prewar consistent life of the local community: three religions, Evangelicals, Catholics and Jews; Germans and Jews; children's friendship. Later, it tells about a change in social mood in late 1930s: the spread of Nazism, ideology which was forced by fear, discrimination against Jews; and finally, fortunately, in 1939, the decision of the Jewish family to emigrate to America.

After the war, the German population was displaced from Wińsko. In July 1945, the first Polish repatriates from around Lviv came to their place.

After the lecture 85-person international party were divided into four groups. In the appointed halls, workshop classes "The Suitcase" were held by Polish teachers: Bożena Ferens, Dorota Łuczyńska, Paulina Przyszło, Iwona Toth, and Grzegorz Samotiuk. In the first part of the activity, students received worksheets with a drawing of a suitcase and they were told that they had to imagine that they were to leave for unknown, not knowing how long for, and they could take hand luggage with them only with up to five indispensable objects. After a few minutes, students compared the content of suitcases justifying their choices. Then the notions of expulsion, resettlement, emigration were clarified and discussed to what situations they relate. The second task was to work with resource texts: memories. Each group received a different text to analyse and discuss. These were the memories of a Polish boy who was driven away from his home by German soldiers and deported from Żywiec, at the beginning of the war. Two more texts were about the experience of a German woman living in the Striegau area, now

Strzegom, at the time of the entry of the Ukrainian Front soldiers at the end of the war.

In conclusion, we discussed the differences between emigration once and in the modern world.

There was also an occasional exhibition about Polish repatriates at school, organised by Ms. Halina Bednarz, a physics teacher, using family documents: "The historical exhibition contained copies of photos and documents regarding the change of Poland's borders after the Second World War and repatriation from Ukraine to Poland. Archival photos, family collections, have been selected to present traditions with a distinct emphasis on diversity and multiculturalism existing there until 1939. The photo of the Congress of Commune Secretaries, dated to 1935, and the photo of young shooters from the Pilsudski Legions formation were real historical curio. Documents of repatriation presented the process of settling of whole families in Poland in the area of new borders after the end of the war in 1945. " by Ms. Bednarz Our "borderless" youth exchanges do not end with the implementation of historical project tasks. As usual we sought new experiences, attractions and entertainment.

On Monday afternoon, after a common lunch at school, the students took part in a city game. Divided into seven international groups, they searched for Wrocław dwarves. The groups were supposed to take a photo with each dwarf.

Tuesday we all spent on the excursion to Kraków, where we took some photos of the whole international group. The weather was nice so we did a lot of sightseeing.

The historical part of our programme was complemented by a visit to the Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory Museum in Kraków, where the exhibition „Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945” is located. (see page 34)

On Wednesday morning we gathered in the school hall, where our Italian friends presented their electronic "Talking map" device, i.e. a sound map of Europe created on the basis of earlier presentations on border changes within our countries after World War II and recorded voices of students from our schools describing these changes.

Then Ms. Chiara Longoni-Neff discussed the competition for the logo of the project and presented its results. The first prize went to Jasna, Chaula, Tomasso, Flavio and Gabrielle, the second to Kasia, Weronika, Gina, Baris, Cecilia, Luigi and the third to Kardelen, Anastasia, Alex, Alessio, Riccardo and Omar. Then, Ms. Bożena Ferens and Ms. Paulina Przyszło announced the results of the city game: 1st place was taken by group 5, the second by group 2 and the third – teams: 1 and 7. The winners received “sweet” prizes.

Later on, one-hour classes in the computer lab took place. Students working in 16 teams performed the task “My first electronic book” under the direction of Mr. Grzegorz Marciszewski.

After lunch, all the party were divided into five groups. Then we went to various institutions to have some activities. The largest group had two workshops in Wrocław Technology Park entitled “Design thinking” and “Programming with the SPHERO robot”.

The next group had classes in screen printing and watched an exhibition about the history of PRL in the Center of History “Zajezdnia”. Another group went to the German Cultural and Social Society to meet the witness of history. The last group went to relaxing classes at the School of Rhythm and Percussion Instruments.

And in the evening … and in the evening we spent time chatting and listening to music (some of us danced ) with a delicious meals prepared by Mrs. Paulina Przyszło in cooperation with the students.

Participants’ comments on the mobility meeting in Wrocław:

Comment of the lecturer, Mr. Bogodar Zielnica: "With great joy I accepted the invitation to participate in the refugee project.

The history of world war is often a description of the most important events for young people combined with a long list of dates and statistics. In my opinion, the science of history becomes more interesting and more valuable when we learn about it, studying the fate of individual people. When I lived in Wińsk a few years ago, I managed to make contact with his former German and Jewish inhabitants. Their stories were described in the book "Winzig, Germany, 19331946" by Rita Steinhardt Botwinick, born in 1922 in Winzig. The book shows a small, living community, whose members, facing external evil, take on the attitudes of rogues, heroes or silent observers. We meet the director Spieler, who protects Jewish children from the aggression of the boys from Hitlerjugend, and the mayor Lang, who is doing his best to make Winzig the first town in Lower Silesia to be "Judenrein" or cleansed of Jews. Rita's family manages to escape to America in 1939. Six years later, his German inhabitants must leave their hometown. Polish settlers forced to move out of the former Tarnopol Voivodeship into Polish buildings abandoned by them. It seems that in 1946 the chain of history of this place is discontinued, but after 70 years, Jews, Germans, and Poles who have lived or are currently living in Wńsko, are beginning to establish closer and closer relationships. Their former or present homeland becomes what begins to unite them instead of dividing them. Governments can shape politics, but in fact reconciliation is made between ordinary people who want to reach out to each other and get to know one another. "

Students’ comments: “The ERASMUS PLUS programme is an interesting project that integrates young people from various age groups from European countries. The subject of our project addresses the issues of resettlement and changes of the border line in Europe. Becoming acquainted with the history of neighboring countries is as important as having that knowledge about the country in which you live, calling it 'home'. Mr Bogodar Zielnica's moving lecture was perfectly suited to the theme of the project, acquainting us with the story of Rita Steinhardt Botwinick and referring to the problem of Nazism and persecution of other nations.

"On the first day of the project, before the guests came to our school, it was obvious to some students that they were excited - people who had just joined the project. It turned out that our foreign friends are very eager to make new friends. At various activities, events and tasks related to the project, everyone was involved in the work and at the same time they had a great time (e.g. during the search for Wroclaw dwarfs).

Our first task in international groups was the exercise with a suitcase. We had to imagine that we were forced to leave our homes and set off into the unkown.

Then we had to decide what to take with us ( 5 most important things) at the time of possible expulsion.

The next task was to explain the three concepts of "emigration", "expulsion" and “resettlement ". Thanks to the joint workshops on the first day, we met. After assignments in groups, we went to the Wroclaw market in search of gnomes, which was a great, integrating task.

The next day brought a trip to Kraków - we visited, Wawel and the museum Oskar Schindler's Factory.

On the last day, the Italians showed us the result of our previous cooperation Talking Map. We also created some e-books. In the evening, we said goodbye after having fun together.

During the war, people of different nationalities had to flee. They left their

homes, left their belongings, which they were unable or could not take away. I cannot even imagine what they could feel. It was a huge tragedy - they had to find a new place of residence, which they did not know and just did not want. "

We started the Erasmus Plus exchange meeting with greetings and the presentation of the programme for three days from 27 to 29 May 2019. During the first meeting in the school hall we listened to the lectures of our guests- Mr. Bogodar Zielnica (an English teacher at WSB) and Mr. Grzegorz Samotiuk (a History teacher at ZSE-O). Then we were divided into four big groups and went to appointed classrooms. There we did some warm-up exercises to get to know one another. The most interesting task that we had to do was called “The suitcase”. We were to imagine that we were going to nowhere and we had to pack the most important things which could be helpful in our trip.

In the afternoon we went to the Old Town to have a Scavenger’s hunt – a city game. We were divided into seven mixed international groups. The task was to find as many dwarfs as we could. Then we were to take a photo with them.

On Tuesday we went to Kraków. M.r Wodzisławski guided our trip telling us about the monuments. We climbed up Wawel Hill and there with the whole group we took a photo. After that in the Main Market Square we had some free time. We went to eat something and buy some souvenirs. In the afternoon we went to Oscar Schindler’s Factory Museum. There we had a tour with a guide who was talking about Jewish people in the World War II. It was really terrible to hear about the danger, fear and sadness which the Jewish people got through. We came back to Wrocław late in the evening. Everyone was really tired but happy.

On Wednesday we all met in the school hall. The Italian students presented their interactive talking map about how the borders of our countries changed after World War II. They did a really good work. It was impressive.

Then Ms. Longoni-Neff reported the logo competition and announced which project received the biggest support in the poll.

After that teachers Ms. Ferens and Ms. Przyszło announced the results of the competition when we were looking for dwarves on Monday. We got some sweets and congratulations. Then we had a little break for something to eat and drink.

Next we went to the IT classrooms where we were doing a task called “My first e-book”. Firstly, we had a problem to make groups, because there were too few chairs for everyone. So together we went for more seats. When everybody had their own chair and were in the correct groups, we started doing the task.

After that we had lunch in the school hall.

In the afternoon, divided into small groups, we set off to different places: Centrum Historii ‘Zajezdnia’, Wrocławski Park Technologiczny, NTK-S and The School of Rhythm – to have workshops.

We finished our project with the farewell party with tasty food prepared by Ms. Przyszło and her students. It was an unexpected ending of the day full of good memories!”

4.1 The multimedia „Talking Map” Project by Italian students Last year, at Magistri Cumacini in Como, the class 4ELN2 carried out the project for Erasmus+ called “TheTalking Map”. Our teacher, Luisa Bianco, came up with the idea to make an electronic map of the Europe to describe the border problems after World War II. The class was divided in two main groups for the pratical design and implementation: the Hardware group and the Software group.

The physical wooden structure of the map was started by the class 4CAT1 and it was finished by the Hardware group.

Firstly, the Hardware group made the holes in which they put the power white LED that is responsible for the glowing stars of the European Flag. Secondly, the group put the multicolor LED strip under the names of the European states and joined all of them with the Arduino MEGA as the main control unit. In order to select an audio file there is a keypad connected to the Arduino MEGA. Finally, to supply all the power to the circuit they used two ATX power supplies from old desktop PCs. At the same time in the Software group the programmers were working on different problems: the light of the star, the effect of the multicolor LED and the reproduction of the music. For the first two problems a group of programmers made a great job with the automatic dimmable white LED and the multicolor LED.

For the Audio automations the other programmers had a lot of problems about the file reproductions on the speaker, because the Arduino initially didn’t recognise the format of the audio file. Only when they put a module to the Arduino MEGA the sound started working. The project was very big and complex and took a lot of time to finish it. At the end the job was done and the Map started working well.

The class was proud of their work.

4.2 Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945 - the exhibition in former Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory The exhibition „Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945” is located in the former administrative building of Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory at 4 Lipowa Street.

The exhibition is primarily a story about Kraków and its inhabitants, both Polish and Jewish, during World War II. It is also a story about Nazi Germans – the occupiers who arrived here on 6 September 1939, brutally disrupting Kraków’s centuries-long history of Polish-Jewish relations. The great history of World War II intersects here with everyday life, and the personal dramas of individual people overlap with the tragedy which affected the whole world.

The wartime history of Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik – DEF – and its owner Oskar Schindler was brought into the limelight in 1993 by Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler’s List.

Ever since that time, tourists from all over the world have been coming to Lipowa Street to visit the place where Schindler saved the lives of over a thousand people.

The character of Oskar Schindler and the life stories of the Kraków Jews he saved are presented in the exhibition as part of the city’s complex wartime history. Oskar Schindler’s heroic attitude is presented in close-up in his former office – luckily, the historic room located in the factory’s administrative building has been preserved intact throughout the years.

The dominant feature here is the symbolic “Survivors’ Ark” made of thousands of enamelled pots, similar to those manufactured by Schindler’s employees during the war.

5. Short-term exchange of groups of students – in Como and Triest, 1618 October 2019

With the help of the ERASMUS+-Project „Young citizens in Europe: Living without borders“, a part of the ERASMUS+ team travelled to our long-term partner school I.T.I.S MAGISTRI CUMACINI in Como/Italy between the 15th and the 19th October.

The I.T.I.S MAGISTRI CUMACINI is an institution of higher education with a technical focus. Here the 42 students from Franz-Böhm School, together with 17 exchange students and teachers from the long-term partner school Zespół Szkół Ekonomiczno-Ogólnokształcących in Wrocław, Poland, were heartily welcomed by the headmaster, Ing. Enrico Tedoldi, on Wednesday morning.

The Italian colleagues showed the guests around the school building and thus gave them an insight into their everyday school life. Using guided workshops, they presented the remarkable results of the last Erasmus+ project in English. The students, divided into six Italian-German-Polish groups, participated in various workshop activities in the field of mechanics, electronics, electrical engineering, topography and English. Eight of them took part in the volleyball tournament.

After lunch in the school cafeteria, we all drove to the Town Hall, where we had an appointment with the Mayor of Como, Dott Mario Landriscina. The project coordinator, Ms. Chiara Longoni-Neff, and the Italian students talked about our project.

After the meeting, we took a group photo in the courtyard in front of the town hall, of course with the participation of the mayor.

In the evening, all together, students and teachers from three schools - nearly 100 people, met in Birrificio (restaurant in the former brewery building) to share various types of pizza - the so-called Giropiza.

On the second day, Thursday, right after breakfast, we set off for Trieste. Around 2 p.m., after hotel accommodation and lunch, we explored this picturesque city with a guide, listening to an interesting story about the extraordinary history of the Free Territory of Trieste - in English.

In the evenings, which we spent in Trieste, we feasted in industrial restaurants Foster and Stiller.

The programme of the third day of exchange (Friday) was closely related to the historical tasks of the project, i.e. the changes of borders immediately after World War II and in the following years. This time it was about post-war events in Istria and in Trieste itself.

We drove to the Basovizza, mass murder memorial of Italy- “Foiba di Basovizza”.

It is an area bordering the previous Yugoslavia (the source of the conflict under Tito's rule).

We also went to Padriciano, where a refugee camp used to be for many years.

In the afternoon, in Trieste, we visited the Museo della Risiera di San Sabba with a guide. The visit showed an insight into the history of World War II and the life in a concentration camp. The “Risiera di San Sabba” was the only concentration camp on Italian ground.

In the evening, we took the last group photo at the beautiful Piazza Unita ’D’ Italia and said goodbye to our partners. On Saturday, after breakfast, both German and Polish groups set off on a journey back to their countries and homes.

Wednesday morning - activities in groups

On Wednesday morning we had breakfast at B&B Como Hotel. After that, at 9 a.m., we went to school, Magistri Cumacini, where we met the head teacher and other school staff. After the official meeting we had a tour around the building guided by Italian students in groups.

Then, me and my friends in one group played volleyball with Italians and Germans.

Unfortunately, we lost the game, but we enjoyed it very much. After the game, we went out to get lunch that consisted of chicken sandwiches. by Weronika

On 16th Oct, we arrived at the Italian school. After an official speech of school head teacher, we were divided into groups, mixed with Italian and German students. At 11:15 we got to the classroom, and we took a seat. We were separated in another two groups. Each of the groups had to choose the leader.

Our task was to introduce to the leader, a secret word without using this word in a sentence. We had to think about the best definition of this word, so that our leader could easily guess it.

For example, we got a word: rainbow, and we had to present it to the leader, so we came up with a sentence: it's always coming after the rain. Each time the leader guessed the taboo word, the group got a point. We were playing this game till 12:15, and after that, we went to another classroom, to get some knowledge about Italian student's project ,,Talking map". We really enjoyed the workshops, and we were happy to spend time with other students. by Wiktoria & Marysia

After visiting the school, students took us to the electronic workshop. First they greeted us with small treats. Later Italian students set up an interactive map on the table and turned it on. We listened to Italian, German and Polish students talking about changes taking place at our national borders. The show was interesting. We liked the part when Italian boys explained how the map works most.

Then we were divided into 3 groups. We saw an interesting experiment using a fan and water. All of us were really focused on the event. by Ola

We took part in the topography workshop. There Italian students showed us their projects of buildings. Then they took us outside and showed us the camera which is used for taking pictures of the area. We also could see a lab where a lot of building materials were gathered.

by Paulina & Kasia Wednesday afternoon - meeting in the Town Hall In the afternoon we went to the City Town Hall to have a meeting with the mayor of Como, Dott Mario Landiscina. The mayor greeted us and told us how happy he was because of our Erasmus+ mobility meeting. He was impressed by the talking map which was made by Italian students. We also gave the mayor some souvenirs from Poland and Germany.

After the meeting we all took a picture with the mayor. Then we went to Palazzo Ternagni. Next we had free time. We bought some souvenirs and visited the market square.

In the evening we all met at Giropizza.

We shared really various pizzas.

It was also our farewell with Italian students because next day we went to Trieste together with the German group and Polish, German and Italian teachers.

Day 2, Thursday, 17 OCT 2019 Thursday morning – the journey to Trieste

Wednesday afternoon – sightseeing with a tourist guide

We Left our hotel at around 4 p.m. when our guide arrived and we walked towards the centre. The first station was a Neptune Fountain at Vittorio Vaneto square. Then we moved to an old harbour which used to be salt springs.

Another part of our sightseeing tour for that day was climbing up the hills to admire beautiful views of Trieste and picturesque Italian houses.

When we reached the top of the hill we stopped for a while in the middle of the square where we saw a statue of soldiers who were fighting in the first world war.

Next we moved to the San Giusto Martire Cattedra. Inside, we could see an interesting visual phenomenon. Everything there depends on the point of view.

At first look everything looked good but if you looked closer you could see an asymetry between both sides of the cathedral.

We ended our trip when we walked down from the hill and stopped at the main square of Trieste where we could see big administrative buildings which had been rebuilt by the Austrians.

We said goodbye to our guide and the rest of free time we spent walking around to look for other interesting places.

Day 3, Friday, 18 OCT 2019 Sightseeing with a tour guide in English: visits to Patriciano Camp, Basovizza Foiba and the Museo della Risiera Di San Sabba Our last Day in Italy in the morning we took our guide and went to Patriciano Camp and Basovizza Foiba a memorial to border conflicts and bloody fights on the Yugoslav Italian border after World War II. It was very sad and terrible that a lot of people lost their houses, families and lives.

We watched a historical movie about that place but we just had to guess exactly what it meant because it was in Italian. It does not change the fact that it was about the terrible experiences of the people there. We also saw refugee camp for displaced persons. We could see how they had to live and what objects they used.

After that we went to Pizzeria Al Tigilio Basovizza where we had great lunch with German students. In the afternoon we visited the Museo della Risiera Di San Sabba. It functioned during World War II as a Nazi concentration camp for the detention and killing of political prisoners, and a transit camp for Jews, most of whom were then deported to Auschwitz.

We could see tiny cells for prisoners in which they had to live in incredibly terrible conditions. We went with exchange members to beautiful Piazza Unita’ D’ Italia and we took a photo, said goodbye and went to our hotels. After that full of impressions day we had free time to buy some souvenirs.

In the evening we went to Birriere Forst to eat our last meal in Trieste. Then we came back to our hotel and next morning we had to return to Poland. by Julia

5.2 The report by a German student about the meeting in Como and Trieste, 16-19 OCT 2019 - By Patrick Angelo D‘alessandro

Travel Journal Day 1 On Tuesday the 15th October all German participants of the Erasmus + project met in front of the entrance of Franz-Böhm-School. We were more than 40 students. At 7:30 a.m. we started our journey to Como Italy, we went there by bus. We finally arrived in Como in the late afternoon.

After the arrival at our hotel, we checked in and shortly afterwards we went to Piazza Duomo to meet the students and teachers from Wroclaw and Como. Our task was to split up in groups and ask the Italian students, whether they can recommend any good places to eat. We decided to just do a bit of exploring and after walking for a bit we found a nice place to eat pizza. Afterwards we returned to our meeting point and drove back to the hotel by our bus. It was a rather exhausting first day, but the hotel rooms were a lot better than anticipated, there was a big painting above our beds and the bathroom was rather modern looking.

Travel Journal Day 2 On Wednesday the 16th October at 8 am we met at the hotel lobby and had breakfast. After our breakfast we met up in the hall of the hotel and went by our personal bus to the Italian school Magistri Cumacini.

All guests and Italian students went to the school auditorium in which the headmaster greeted us and gave a speech on the Erasmus+ project. After the speech several Italian students were holding posters with names of the guest students. After finding our groups, the Italian students acted as guides and gave us a tour around the school. They showed us several classrooms in which they usually work on different mechanical projects.

Before our trip to Italy we were shown several possible workshops to choose from in our English class. Shortly after the tour around the school we met at the entrance, we formed groups again depending on which workshop we chose beforehand in our school. Since I chose the class game taboo and the talking map workshops, I went with the other guests to our designated classroom. In the class game workshop the participants split up in two big groups, then both groups had to choose a representative, both teams received a list of words and the task was to explain these words to their representative, without mentioning the specific word. If the representative guessed the right word within a short time limit, his team received a point.

After the class game we proceeded with our second workshop “Talking Map”. The Italian students presented us the talking map with the history of Europe. They showed us how after pressing a button on the map a sound file started to play which they recorded beforehand.

Besides they also showed us the specific mechanical parts which they built and programmed, in order to create the talking map. After demonstrating and explaining each part we reached the end of our workshop, we left the classroom and went to the school canteen. There all the participants and teachers were offered a free meal, which we chose beforehand.

After lunch we left the school and drove to the city town hall of Como. There the mayor of Como gave a welcome speech for us. After taking some group pictures we left the town hall and had some free time. My friend and I took some pictures of the city and tried out a local „ice cream parlor“ (gelateria), the flavours were just amazing. After some more exploring it was time to head back to our personal bus, in order to drive back to our hotel.

In the evening we went to the restaurant Birrificio for a „Giropizza“. The upper floor of the restaurant was reserved for the participants and teachers, basically it was an all you can eat offer that included all kinds of pizza. It was the first time that I tried a pizza with Gorgonzola and pears - extraordinary but very delicious.

Travel Journal Day 3 On the third day, our time in Como came to an end, so it was time to travel to our second destination: Trieste. After our breakfast at 7 a.m. we checked out of our hotel and began our journey to Trieste. We arrived at about 3 p.m. and checked in at the booked hotel.

Then our program already continued. After meeting up at the hotel lobby we split up into two groups, then two city guides arrived at the hotel, one for each group. First, we were guided through the city. Our first stop was a Lutheran church, since Trieste was an important trading city, many different cultures collided within the city, that’s why it was important to accept different religions without persecution, which is why it was allowed to build different religious buildings.

We continued our guided tour and looked at the “Canale Grande”, it was a beautiful sight looking at the boats and the reflection of the river:

On our way to the peak of the city we encountered the “Teatro Romano di Trieste”. These are ruins of a Roman theatre, they were discovered in 1938 after a big urban reconstruction, Mussolini then ordered to demolish a large part of the residential area. By exposing the Roman ruins, the continuity of the new fascist empire was demonstrated and the affiliation of Trieste to the Roman Empire and thus to Italy was demonstrated.

Now we started to climb the mountain, after reaching the peak we had a great view of the city of Trieste.

Next we went to the Cathedral of San Giusto, the Trieste Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Justus, is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the main church of Trieste, it is the seat of the Bishop of Trieste.

The interior of the cathedral is very spacious with high ceilings and beautiful wall paintings.

Within the cathedral is a relic altar holding different catholic relics, one of them being the tip of the halberd of Sergius a famous Christian soldier, who was revered as a martyr and military saint by the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches. Sergius and Bacchus were officers in Galerius army and were held high in his favour until they were exposed as secret Christians. They were then severely punished, with Bacchus dying during torture and Sergius eventually beheaded.

Afterwards we returned to the main plaza of Trieste and ended our tour for the day. Since we had some free time after the tour I explored the city a bit together with my friend and bought some souvenirs for my family.

Travel Journal Day 4 After meeting up for breakfast we visited the Padriciano refugee camp. Our guide explained to us how harsh the conditions were, in which the refugees had to live in.

Families cooped up in small houses while most of the men had to sleep outside even in winter, freezing to death wasn’t uncommon.

Here we can see the main entrance of the camp, you have to walk over a ramp and you can see graffiti of important dates. The writings on the walls recall the fundamental dates that coincided with the major waves of exiles: the 1947 Treaty of Paris, exodus from Pula and the territories ceded, and the 1954 London Memorandum , exodus from Zone B of the Free Territory of Trieste.

Our next stop was the Basovizza foiba. On the road from Basovizza to San Lorenzo Jezero you pass an Italian memorial, the „Foiba di Basovizza“. With “Foiba”, which is derived from the Latin word “fovea, fossa” or from the Croatian “fojba”, a shaft is understood first of all. There are 1700 of these in the Istrian region alone. This word got terrible overtones from a practice that means “spingere nella foiba” which means to be pushed into a shaft.

This phrase is mainly used today to describe what happened at the end of the Second World War in 1945 after the withdrawal of German troops and before the Allies entered Trieste. At that time, new rulers under Marshal Tito took over the regime, some calling them communist partisans, others member of the Yugoslav army and raged in the 40 days of their brief rule among the people of Trieste.

How many people have been killed in these days, can no longer be determined exactly. The estimates vary between 7000 and 15000 people.

At 12 o’clock we had lunch at the Restaurant “Tiglio” in Basovizza. We chose our menu beforehand during our bus ride to Italy. I had a schnitzel with fries and for dessert a delicious panna cotta.

At 3.30 p.m. we visited the “Museo della Risiera di San Sabba”. The large complex of buildings of the rice plant - built in 1898 in the suburb of San Sabba - was first used by the Nazi occupier as a temporary prison camp for Italian soldiers captured after September 8, 1943. Towards the end of October, it was structured as a police detention camp, intended both for the sorting of deportees in Germany and Poland and for the storage of looted goods, and for the detention and elimination of hostages, partisans, political prisoners and Jews.

In the underpass, the first large room on the left of those entering was called the "death cell". Prisoners transferred from prisons or captured in raids and destined to be killed and cremated within a few hours were crammed here. According to testimonies, they often came to find themselves together with corpses destined for cremation.

After visiting a small museum dedicated to this prison our city guided tour came to an end and we returned to our hotel. For the rest of the day we were allowed to spend our time however we wanted since it was the last day before our return to Frankfurt.

Travel Journal Day 5 At 7.30 a.m. we had breakfast and after that we checked out of our hotel. We then began our departure to Frankfurt. It was a very long bus ride, after some stops and swapping our bus driver we arrived shortly after 22.00 at our school. After saying goodbye to our classmates and teachers we went home. I enjoyed the trip to Italy very much and I’m really looking forward to the trip to Straßburg. Thanks a lot for taking part in the project “Young citizens in Europe – Linving without borders”!

6 Cooperation in the pandemic time Starting from the beginning of 2020 year a vicious coronavirus has been spreading gradually across Europe. It has brought dangerous Covid-19 disease: millions cases and thousands of people lost their lives. Pupils and students were stopped from going to school and a new way of working and learning online from home has begun and, with short breaks, has lasted till June 2021.

6.1 Online meetings of partners In the new school year 2020/21 we wanted to keep working on the Erasmus+ project despite Corona. This is the group of German students who are looking forward to working (at least online) with students from Italy and Poland :-).

We had several online meetings together starting from January till April 2021.

To get to know each other better we did some activities in teams. For example, the students in mixed groups played the game ‘Among us”, followed by the

interaction to find common interests and exchange information about Easter traditions in our countries.

6.2 Online workshops about the European Union at the House of Europe in Wrocław

Polish students had several online meetings at Wrocław’s Information Point of The European Parliament. The workshops were conducted by Ms Aleksandra Klimczyk.

At the first meeting, the lecturer introduced the member states of the European Union and explained what the European Union is. We also learned about European symbols – the flag, anthem and motto.

Then the achievements of the European Union that are close to the citizens were presented: the Schengen area, the EHIC card, the Erasmus Plus programme and the euro area. The next stage of the meeting was to present the most important goals of the European Commission, such as the European Green Deal. At the end, the students took a quiz called "How the EU affects our daily lives”.

At the second meeting the lecturer discussed the European Union institutions and their role for the European societies.

As it concerns the meeting entitled "Job mobility in the EU": During the classes, the students were acquainted with the European Job Mobility Portal (EURES), Erasmus + program, EURODESK, the European Youth Portal and the European Solidarity Corps was presented. During the classes, the students also learned about the possibility of writing their own CV and a cover letter in the EUROPASS programme.

7. Short-term exchange of groups of students – Strasburg and Frankfurt /Main - spring 2021* / Online meeting closing up the cooperation Our hope for the exchange of students in Strasbourg with a visit to the European Parliament and Franz-Böhm-Schule in Frankfurt am Main has not been fulfilled due to the constant inability to ensure the safety of travelling for school groups.

Together, we decided to sum up the project with German-Italian-Polish online meeting.

Online Meeting to Sum up the Cooperation, May 26, 2021 The international online meeting was opened by the project coordinator, Mrs. Chiara Longoni-Neff, who welcomed the head teachers and young participants.

The principals of schools Mr. Möller, Mrs. Rebuzzini and Mrs. Marecik had their speeches, emphasizing the educational values of the project and international youth cooperation.

Then, Ms. Nicole Beuck, a teacher from the German school, presented the daily programme and tasks for international group work.

The first worksheet took the students through issues aimed at getting to know each other better, discussing their interests, as well as sharing views and personal experiences during the pandemic time.

The presentation of the "Talking Map" of Europe made by students from the Italian school was the next item on the agenda. This device includes recorded voices of students describing the changes of the borders of our countries when the World War II ended.

After a short break, the students continued working in international groups. In the next task, using two e-books, students answered questions about the Erasmus Plus project. As students in eight groups shared different questions about the project events and the knowledge acquired during the cooperation, the representatives successively presented the results of their team work.

The final task was based on the word ERASMUS, and required to invent terms associated with this educational programme and which included subsequent letters of its name in the spelling.

After the presentation of the results of that exercise, the participants received diplomas.

At the end of the international meeting we watched the films which promoted our cities; Como, Frankfurt and Wrocław.

Afterwards, Polish students visited the European Parliament in Strasburg online.

It was a 20-minute film in Polish.

„On May 26th, pupils took part in the online Erasmus Plus final”.

Our headmaster Mr. Möller officially opened the meeting. In his greetings he underlined the central achievements of the European Union, which enable freedom and peace within Europe. He referred in particular to the freedom of movement and work, which is still not to be taken for granted and for which everyone of us is responsible.

Over the past three years, around 300 pupils and teachers from Italy, Poland and Germany have been involved online and on site in the international project “Young Citizens in Europe: Living Without Borders”. We welcomed students from Como from ITIS Magistri Cumacini and Wrocław from Zespół Szkół Ekonomiczno-Ogólnokształcących here in Frankfurt in December 2018. We had the opportunity to meet them in Como and Wrocław in 2019.

Two examples of the excellent collaboration: Talking Map > This is an electronic and interactive map of Europe that describes the problems at the borders between the countries after World War II. The pupils from all three countries made audio recordings in English, which are stored on the card and can be listened to when pushing a button.

E-books> Activities, mobilities, feedback from pupils and newspaper articles that were carried out or created during the project were documented in two e-books in English.

Unfortunately, due to Corona, we finally had to cancel the exchange in Frankfurt and Strasbourg that was originally planned for May 2020. But since we all don't

want to let the coronavirus get us down, we agreed on the online Finale. We exchanged ideas and summarized the most important things. We achieved a nice and appropriate conclusion to our joint project.

With the project we were able to set an example that our schools, our countries and we personally believe in the future of Europe and that we want to work for it - also in the future.

We would like to thank all the students and teachers who have supported and participated in the Erasmus Plus project over the past three years. As a reward and as a token of thanks, we have awarded a “Ceritificate of appreciation”.

And in line with the project “Young Citizens in Europe: Living without Borders”, we will all hopefully soon be able to travel freely and without borders again.

8. Promotion of the project and disseminating its outcomes 8.1 Polish students promote the Erasmus+ project to the Mayor of Wrocław – July 2020 Meeting at the Town Hall in Wrocław In the middle of the summer holidays, on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, a school delegation led by the head teacher, Mrs. Jolanta Marecik, visited the Mayor of Wrocław, Mr. Jacek Sutryk, to give regards from the Mayor of Como, Mr. Mario Landriscina, and talk about the Erasmus + project "Young Citizens in Europe; Living Without Borders ”.

During the meeting, there was enough time to talk about the educational offer at our school, including the students' sports achievements.
