Joy from within

In the quiet of the morning, before we reach for our phones, before the noise of the world drowns them out, there are a few precious moments where our thoughts provide insight into our psyche. Here is where what we think of ourselves is revealed, Bozeman country musician Stephanie Quayle says over coffee on April 30, release day for her debut book, “Why Do We Stay? How My Toxic Relationship Can Help You Find Freedom.”

“I’m a little trepidatious, because like I said, I share it all,” Quayle said of the release. “And also hopeful because it has brought me so much healing and understanding and if that gives that to others, that’s everything.”

For years, Quayle found shame when she reflected in the morning quiet. Though she thought she had done the work, had moved on, a series of toxic relationships had beaten her down and made her a shell of herself.

“All of us have these stories behind our smiles,” she said.

The release of her eight-song album “On the Edge” in November 2022 was the first time Quayle shared her story with the world. A podcast and short film accompanied the album, “to help wrap the listener’s arms around the complexity of the story.” The book exposes even more layers.

On the album, song “The Lost Years” is a lament about the time devoted to the relationship and losing herself in the process. “Fiction” speaks to the lies she was told about her partner’s infidelity. “Only Good Will Come of This” is taken from her mother’s words after the 2009 plane crash that killed the boyfriend she couldn’t leave.

JEONG

“Birth/Rebirth” (May 17)

A morgue technician successfully reanimates the body of a little girl, but to keep her breathing, she will need to harvest biological materials from pregnant women. When the girl’s mother, a nurse, discovers her baby alive, they enter into a deal that forces them both down a dark path of no return. Starring Marin Ireland, Judy Reyes, A.J. Lister, Breeda Wool and LaChanze.

When it comes to game shows on Fox, Ken Jeong certainly is one of the network’s go-to personalities.

A regular panelist on “The Masked Singer,” the comedian, actor, licensed doctor and former “Community” co-star is also the host of “I Can See Your Voice,” the series in which Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Adrienne Bailon-Houghton (“Raven’s Home”) and guest “celebrity detectives” help a player deduce whether other participants can sing … before they croon a single note.

Based on that guesswork, many supposed singers are eliminated, and the one who remains joins an established music star for a duet. Jeong is also an executive producer of the show, which is inspired by the South Korean program of the same name. “I Can See Your Voice” returns to Fox with new episodes of its third season Thursday, May 16.

Jeong has done other jobs for Fox as well, as a host of specials and a guest on other series such as “The Simpsons” (in voice only, of course) and “Crime Scene Kitchen,” but his career dates back to the stand-up comedy he performed while he was studying medicine in North Carolina. He continued those dual professions when he moved to Los Angeles, but he ultimately leaned more towards entertainment as his live performances helped him gain work on NBC’s “The Office” and HBO’s aforementioned “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” among other shows.

After roles in such movies as “The Hangover” (2009) and “Zookeeper” (2011), Jeong brought his principal interests together by starring in and executive-producing the ABC sitcom “Dr. Ken,” which ran for two seasons, from 2015-17. He would be back on TV regularly soon afterward with the 2019 premiere of “The Masked Singer,” a ratings success from the start; it’s slated to wrap its 11th season May 22, on Fox.

“Shardlake” (Available Now)

Based on the first novel in C.J. Sansom’s Tudor murder mystery series, this four-part drama is set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries. Matthew Shardlake’s (Arthur Hughes) sheltered life is turned upside down when Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) instructs him to investigate the murder of a commissioner at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea. Accompanied by cocky, good-looking Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle), the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who, fearing for their future, will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order.

With “I Can See Your Voice” now resuming, Jeong continues to affirm himself as a home-screen star for all seasons — and that’s a tune he definitely can carry.

Tom Hanks holds much of

‘Cast Away’ on his own

Rare is the performer who can hold a movie on his or her own for more than half of the film’s running time.

Well, OK ... in Tom Hanks’ case, on his own with some help from a volleyball.

Being shown by Freeform on Tuesday, May 14, the somewhat underrated 2000 drama “Cast Away” showcases one of the greatest challenges the two-time Oscar winner has had in his career. Playing a FedEx worker who ends up the lone survivor of a plane crash and must learn to survive on an otherwise deserted island, Hanks is thoroughly compelling to watch.

As it becomes increasingly clear that rescuers aren’t coming for Chuck Noland (Hanks), who regrets having left his fiancee Kelly (Helen Hunt) behind in Memphis, he learns by necessity how to hydrate — freshly acquired coconut milk is a help — and how to create a fire to cook, um, “delicacies” that he ordinarily might not eat if he had anything more conventional to choose from.

Oh, and about that volleyball, one of the most famous pieces of sports equipment in screen history: Chuck retrieves it from one of the FedEx packages that washed up on shore with him, and in honor of the ball’s brand, he names it Wilson. He also gives it a “face” of sorts, using his blood to paint those features, and it’s no small feat that Hanks gives it a personality just by talking to it. And because of that, the way their “relationship” ultimately plays out is heartbreaking.

“Cast Away” also underscores the fact that if any filmmaker can devise a harrowing aerial-crisis scene, it’s Robert Zemeckis. The director would do it again 12 years later with the Denzel Washington-starring “Flight,” but in “Cast Away,” you can actually feel your feet getting wet along with Hanks through a pilot’s-seat view of a storm-wracked ocean rushing up toward the rapidly plunging plane. It’s a thoroughly harrowing sequence that’s hard to shake once you’ve seen it.

Wendell Pierce

Q: It’s nice to see Wendell Pierce back on TV regularly in “Elsbeth.” I also enjoyed him on “The Wire,” but hasn’t he done other series as well?

A: He certainly has. Most recently before CBS’s and Paramount+’s “Elsbeth,” the actor was a regular on Prime Video’s “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and BBC America’s “The Watch,” and he also had a recurring part in the third season of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” on Starz. Prior to that, he also was a recurring player on USA Network’s “Suits” and “Unsolved,” NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” and “Third Watch,” Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” the syndicated “Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne,”

Earlier, Pierce had regular roles on several other series … and some of them were sitcoms, though he has been known primarily for dramatic work in recent times. The comedies included CBS’s “The Odd Couple” remake, “The Brian Benben Show” and “The Gregory Hines Show,” and NBC’s “The Michael J. Fox Show” and “The Weber Show.” HBO’s “Treme” – for which Pierce received particular notice from television critics – also featured him regularly, as did CBS’s “Numb3rs” and “Moloney,” and ABC’s “Capital News.”

Additionally, Pierce has done prominent parts in made-for-TV movies. He played Clarence Thomas in HBO’s “Confirmation” and Coach Calhoun in the Fox staging of “Grease Live!,” and he has scores of one-shot guest roles in other series to his credit. On stage in recent years, Pierce had major critical and popular success as Willy Loman in a revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” both on Broadway and in London, earning award nominations in both places for his performance. (He won a Tony Award in 2012 for the play “Clybourne Park.”)

What my dos and don’ts [are], what are my real boundaries, what’s my real edge in a relationship, what am I not going for. ... When I read the script I’m like, ‘OK, yeah, actually Emmett is different from Jacob with this one right here.’ It’s been a lot of those moments, but it only challenged me to be a better actor because it just shuts down my ego. ... Puzzle Solutions

For an example of how a sequel can top the original, there’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” director and co-write r James Cameron’s 1991 sci-fi adventure that FX shows Thursday, May 16, and Saturday, May 18. To be sure, Cameron’s first “Terminator” (released in 1984) is a very solid movie, and it had the bonus of giving Arnold Schwarzenegger an ideal vehicle to hurtle him into superstition as the half-man, half-machine on a murderous mission to prevent a future revolution from being able to develop.

The follow-up puts a very clever twist on the premise, altering the cyborg to become a protector rather than a villain, guarding the uprising-leader-to-be (Edward Furlong) and the latter’s mother (Linda Hamilton, also returning from the first movie). He chiefly has to defend them against a more sophisticated model of Terminator (Robert Patrick) with the ability to shape-shift into the image of anyone or anything, adding a massive level of paranoia to the concept. Other “Terminator” chapters followed in theaters and on TV, but this is the franchise’s masterpiece.

New York Mets, Alonso take on top division rivals Atlanta Braves

Get your popcorn ready, folks! Pete Alonso and the New York Mets get set to wrap up their second season series against the red-hot Atlanta Braves on Sunday, May 12, at Truist Park in Atlanta, with all of the action broadcast live on ESPN.

The Mets are ready to put last season behind them with their 2024 campaign off to a much better start. With 12 wins and 11 losses (at the time of writing) so far this season, the team, currently sitting in third, is looking to fight its way to the top spot in the National League East Division.

Entering free agency this off-season, 28-year-old first baseman — and face of the New York Mets — Pete Alonso is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, having put up 46 home runs, 118 RBIs and 92 runs in 154 games, proving his value to the Mets organization.

The Braves, meanwhile, are looking to build off a fantastic 2023 campaign. As the Braves owned one of the best offenses in MLB history, they slugged a total of 307 home runs, with exceptional play from the likes of Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson.

Last season, the Mets struggled to muster any type of game, going 3-10 on the year against the elite offense of the Braves. But, with the team off to a better start this season and sitting two games behind the top spot in the NL East, look for Alonso and the Mets to come out swinging early against a hungry Atlanta Braves squad.

“A lot of people knew that there was a tragic plane crash. I lost the one I loved,” Quayle said. “But it kind of was a hard stop after that. It didn’t go into the and.”

The “and” being that the relationship was toxic, marred by a manipulative, controlling and unfaithful partner who had toyed with both Quayles emotions and her actual life.

On New Year’s Eve 2007, already inebriated, Quayle was handed a handful of mystery drugs, told by the person she loved that if she didn’t take them, she would ruin the evening.

“I took them and it almost took me,” she said.

A deluxe version of the album, “On The Edge: Forgiven,” is set to release on May 10 and includes tracks from various stages in the production process as well as a new single that shares its name with the book.

“Excuses made, smiles are fake, pretending things are good, when all the while everyone can see right through,” she sings.

“Why Do We Stay?” bares it all. Quayle is candid about the first toxic relationship, and the one that followed in its wake. She talks openly about wanting to end her own life, not because she wanted to die, but because

Ultimately, while writing her story has been healing, the book is for its readers. Quayle’s story is interspersed with the words of W. Campbell uses his expertise to guide the reader through the signs that Quayle missed, defining and outlining the experience of love bombing and gaslighting in relationships.

“It’s a marriage of story and expertise,” Quayle said, explaining how Campbell’s insight felt like a bit of validation. Though she now owns the ways in which she was complicit, she wasn’t “crazy,” like her partner insisted. Instead of telling her story and wishing those in similar situations “good luck,” the pairing has the potential to help others in toxic relationships identify them and find their own freedom.

Airing her story has helped clear her mind, opening up space in an area that had been tied to pain for some 15 years. Putting it in the book has allowed her to stop carrying the weight of her own experience. “I wake up with that joy that only comes from within,” she said.
