‘Songs for a New World’ RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle

iri Devlin, was in the audience at Tuesday’s run-through of Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” at the Verge Theater. She was wearing a mask and hoping to be ready to resume rehearsals as one of the ensemble production’s four actors,

by Wednesday. No one seemed worried.

Devlin watched understudy Tess Carr give a powerhouse debut, taking in how she interacted with the other actors and making mental notes for her own return to the stage.

“I rarely get a chance to see everybody else’s stuff when it’s fully realized,” Devlin said. “It’s really nice to have like an audience moment.”

“Songs for a New World” opens at the Verge Theater in the Emerson Center in Bozeman on Feb. 2 and runs through Feb. 18.

The show features an ensemble cast, with Devlin, Kris Watkins, Sam Pedersen and Connor Tweet taking on various roles in a production that has been described as living somewhere in between song cycle and musical.

“I like to think of this play as a collection of short stories,” director Tessa Welsch said. “It’s unlike any other musical to me because you experience the same theme through about 17 different people’s perspectives. And then you get 17 different characters and time periods and locations. You get to see each person face change.”

Brown was even more cavalier when describing the structure or lack thereof.

“The show has 17 character sketches; there’s not a whole lot linking them — other than that I wrote them — but for some reason they have an emotional journey,” the writer stated in a 1995 article in Time Out New York. “ I can’t describe it to you, but I know that they work onstage.”

Through the course of the play, you see how the characters are differ, but also how they are the same, “how we’re all just trying our best and doing an ok job,” Welsch said. “And you leave just feeling connected to other people.”

“The Mummy” (Available Now)

Even if other performers see more of the literal action in his projects, Victor Garber still makes his presence known.

Familiar to many viewers for his role as the father of the spy played

by Jennifer Garner in “Alias,” he’s portraying another dad with an unconventional daughter in “Family Law.” The drama series is now in its third season, Wednesdays on The CW, while it also continues in Canada on its originating network, Global. Garber is cast as legal firm chief Harry Svensson, whose estranged daughter Abby Bianchi (Jewel Staite, “Firefly”) is a recovering alcoholic trying to salvage her law career while in his employ. That’s rarely an easy task … for both of them, since Abby’s frequently shaky progress makes Harry question his having given her the chance to redeem herself.

For the longevity that multiple Primetime Emmy and Tony nominee Garber has had as an actor, which began when he was a youngster, he had some of his earliest professional success as a folk singer. He went solo at first, then formed a quartet called The Sugar Shoppe that scored a Top 40 hit called “Canada” in — appropriately enough — Canada.

The group didn’t last long, but long enough for appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”

Garber’s musical background served him well as he turned his focus to acting since he starred on both stage and film in “Godspell.” Theater constituted much of his work during the 1970s, but television occupied more of his resume starting in the 1980s, with movies also taking a larger percentage of his professional attention beginning in the 1990s … a decade that encompassed one of his most seen performances, as Thomas Andrews Jr., the general manager of the company that built the title ship in writer-director James Cameron’s Oscar-winning 1997 blockbuster, “Titanic.”

“The Thomas Crown Affair” is criminally enjoyable in remake Many movie remakes prompt the question of why they were even attempted. In the case of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” though, the result is surprisingly good.

Originally filmed in a 1968 version with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway as romantically entangled adversaries in a heist investigation, the story was updated in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo as the amorous opponents. Pierce Brosnan stars in Produced by Brosnan’s company and directed by John Mc“The Thomas Crown Affair” Tiernan (“Die Hard”), the revision – which Cinemax shows Wednesday, Feb. 7, and Saturday, Feb. 10 – is engaging and stylish in its own way, standing successfully without taking anything away from the first edition. And that is no simple feat.

Brosnan is fashionable in more ways than one as title character Crown, a New York-based business tycoon and billionaire who gets kicks from stealing priceless artworks (a change from the Boston-set McQueen variation, in which bank robberies were the crimes of choice). His latest theft draws the attention of a police detective wryly portrayed by Denis Leary, as well as the glamorous insurance investigator represented by Russo. (In a nice nod to the original film, Dunaway has several scenes in a cameo appearance as Crown’s psychiatrist.)

In their bountiful screen time together, Brosnan and Russo have great chemistry and a playful spirit as Crown’s pursuer tries to get the goods on him … though she ultimately him irresistible, especially as he plies her with aspects of his posh lifestyle as glider flights and getaways to exotic locations. As she continues to live the high life apparently under Crown’s spell, the Leary-played cop casts a very skeptical eye toward how she is conducting the probe … and herself.

Ben Gazzara and Frankie Faison also are in the well-chosen cast, as are a number of actors with physiques that could pass for Brosnan’s, which the clever adaptation (by Leslie Dixon and Kurt Wimmer) of Alan R. Trustman’s initial script requires as it proceeds. Not surprisingly, Brosnan never loses his cool as the tale unfolds; conversely, Russo has some nicely emotional moments as her ploy to ensnare Crown backfires on her, putting her heart at more risk than she had gambled on.

James Stewart OF THE JIMMY STEWART SHOW ON NBC Q: I always enjoy watching James Stewart’s movies. Did he ever do a television series?

A: Actually, he did a couple of them. The first was NBC’s appropriately titled comedy “The Jimmy Stewart Show” (1971-72), in which he played a college professor living a relatively tranquil life with his son’s (Jonathan Daly) family under the same roof. Also featuring Julie Adams as the Stewart character’s wife, the show also had Stewart playing his alter ego’s grandfather in flashback sequences.

It didn’t take Stewart long to try series TV again, though on a reduced schedule.

During the 1973-74 season, he played the title role in “Hawkins,” which was one of the rotating elements of “The New CBS Tuesday Night Movies.” The law drama alternated with a television version of “Shaft” – with Richard Roundtree reprising his movie part – and a variety of one-shot original films. Eight episodes of “Hawkins” were made, including the pilot movie that aired earlier in 1973, and Stewart won a Golden Globe Award for the show.

After that, the actor’s TV work was relatively occasional, and he was seen as himself more often than not. He made quite a few appearances as a member of the dais on NBC’s “Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts,” as is verified now by the marathons of those specials that Catchy Comedy runs from time to time. Stewart also made a memorable visit to “The Carol Burnett Show” for its final CBS episode in 1978, with his “reveal” at a piano clearly surprising an emotional Burnett, who was a longtime fan of his.

Pacino and De Niro bring the ‘Heat’

Al Pacino stars in “Heat”

After making a 1989 NBC movie titled “L.A. Takedown,” writer-director Michael Mann expanded that project and added a stellar cast to turn it into the much-praised 1995 crime drama “Heat,” currently streaming on Hulu. Though they both were in “The Godfather, Part II,” Al Pacino and Robert De Niro didn’t share a scene until this film, in which the former plays an elite police unit’s leader who’s determined to catch a retirement-minded career criminal (the De Niro character).

Their colleagues and other associates make for quite a gathering of other actors, from Val Kilmer, Jon Voight and Mykelti Williamson to Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd and Amy Brenneman. The picture’s most amazing accomplishment might be that though it runs just short of three hours, it never flags, with such highlights as a furious mid-movie shootout through the streets of downtown L.A. Mann is planning to make a film from a related story he co-wrote as a novel, “Heat 2.”

The action airs live from New York City’s Barclays Center, Tuesday, Feb. 6, on ESPN. Leading the way for the Mavericks all season long has been none other than the sensational Slovenian, Luka Doncic.

Having yet another incredible season, Doncic leads the Mavs in points with an average of 33.6 per game, putting him in the top five in league scoring. Also contributing 9.1 assists per game and 8.1 rebounds per game, Doncic continues to show his well-rounded game.

And with the Mavs’ recent acquisition of Kyrie Irving, both their games have complemented each other seamlessly, as Irving looks to have found his groove in 2024 with an average of 25.8 points per game — not to mention his five consecutive games in January scoring 30 points or more.

For the Nets, it’s been an up-and-down year, with Spencer Dinwiddie (13.2 points per game) and Mikal Bridges (21.4 points per game) bearing most of the load this season, with point guard and small forward Ben Simmons sitting out the majority of the 2023-24 campaign due to injury.

The last time these two teams met, Doncic put on a show, scoring an easy 49 points, including scoring the tie-breaking three-point shot with 26.3 seconds remaining, with the Mavs walking away victorious, 125-120. While the Nets walked away with another loss, they managed to go 21 for 43 from beyond the arch, something they certainly hope to replicate against a lethal Dallas Mavericks squad.

Stories/from 2 “Songs for a New World” marks Welsch’s musical directorial debut. She has not been involved in a musical production since she was a 15-year-old high schooler in Indiana, though she is no stranger to a straight play after studying theatrical directing at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. She has entered this project with confidence.

“I know how to tell a story,” Welsch said. “And I know how to use a stage and how to create a cohesive evening, a cohesive event.”

In a so-called “straight play,” where the actors rely on dialog instead of song to further the action, the goal is often to come as close to real life as possible within the performances. This is not the case with a musical.

“The entire structure of a musical is based on the suspension of disbelief and a magical realism,” Welsch said.

“No one bursts into song, no one sings about their feelings in real life.”

Yet, “Songs for a New World” is grounded in realism. There is no tap dancing a la the golden age of musical theater. Only two group numbers — “Steam Train” and “The River Won’t Flow” — feature choreography.
