When the Bell Rings...

Early in 2015, our Board and staff posed a very important question, “When the school bell rings at the end of the day, will our Clubs be prepared to serve the most precious asset of our communities – our children?” This very question became the catalyst to jumpstart our strategic planning and create a new strategic plan through 2018.

During this process, we learned a lot about Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County as we reconnected with our mission of inspiring and enabling the youth of our communities to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. What was most inspiring was determining that our core values are Trust, Opportunity, Perseverance, Teamwork, and Fun! The very essence of what we teach our young people are now our new organizational values.

Our vision is to be recognized as the premier youth development organization in our communities. By 2018, our “end in mind” is to have: • Outcome-based programs which are relevant, fun, and impactful to increase membership/attendance.

• A continuous improvement process, through investments in technology and facilities to provide a high-level Club experience at all locations.

• Adequate resources and funding to achieve our strategic priorities.

• An enhanced image by promoting awareness through community education and engagement.

• Recognition as the best non-profit in Porter County to work for and volunteer.

The year 2015 put our organization on the right path to begin achieving these goals. In fact, we served more kids on average per day than we ever have. We had more corporate investors interested in creating GREAT Futures for our children. We engaged a young professionals group and their philanthropic interests to build Board succession. Our Board was recognized nationally for their dedicated service and, most exciting, our Duneland Club’s capital campaign continued on a positive trend with plans of breaking ground on our new site in March 2016.

So when we ask the question “When the School Bell rings, are we prepared?,” the answer is a definite and resounding yes. The next question we ask is, “Are you willing to join us on our journey in creating GREAT Futures for our kids in 2016 and beyond?”

Our Year

Pursuing His Love of Music

When Vince first became a member of the South Haven Club, he had no idea the endless opportunities the Club had to offer. “When I first started coming to the

Club, I really didn’t care about anything. I was in trouble. But, the staff took me in and put me under their wings.”

At his Club, Vince found that he truly enjoyed the arts – particularly in making music. That is when he began to immerse himself in Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County’s Digital Arts Festivals program. This program focuses on six areas including music making, photo illustration, game design, graphic design, and film and animation – the perfect blending of art and technology that allow children to be creative and expressive.

Within this program, Vince composed a song he titled “My Life.” He explained that this song was about his personal experiences and how his eyes were opened to be whatever he wanted to be. Little did he know that Vince with President/COO of Sony his song would earn him a trip to San Diego where he Electronics, Mike Fasulo met with industry leaders such as the President/COO of Sony Electronics, Mike Fasulo. Vince’s song placed him as a national Boys & Girls Clubs of America Digital Arts Festivals winner where only 18 youth across the United States are chosen.

Since this experience, Vince has created more music and now works with a manager and tours to inspire other youth and teens with melodies and lyrics he creates. Vince states, “I am so glad I pursued my

dream of music and was motivated and encouraged by staff to enter the Digital Arts Festivals.”

Also recognized nationally by Boys & Girls Clubs of America was Portage Club member Sanja Kirova for her video game design.

Academic Success

Science, Technology, Enigeering and Math (STEM) education is critical to the ultimate success of our young people as STEM jobs in the United States are expected to grow nearly twice as fast as other fields. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of both interested and adequately prepared K-12 students in STEM subjects, especially among minority youth and young women.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County realizes that our Clubs need to redefine our traditional programs into activities and initiatives that are more relevant to children and our society today. In our Clubs, youth can now build robots and program them to throw balls, follow a path, and more. Club members are learning to code in the Hour of Code program. We are working to reinvent our out-of-school learning environments into spaces that inspire and engage youth to be creative and constructive.

STEM is being taken to a new level inside our Club walls.

ArcelorMittal Foundation provided “seed” funding to jump start a STEM Robotics Program within our Clubs helping us to leverage additional funding from Boys & Girls Clubs of America! As a result, our STEM program is engaging youth in after-school learning. In fact, our Duneland Club entered Indiana University Northwest’s Robotics Competition in November 2015 earning 2nd Place for the Judges Choice and as the Rising Stars for overall competition. Our Clubs look forward to expanding our STEM programming beyond technology in 2016!

Healthy Lifestyles

It is Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County’s job to help set every child and teen on a path toward a GREAT Future, and being physically fit is a critical part of the equation. Our Clubs are committed to implementing programs that focus on having young people meet a minimum of 60-minutes of daily activity. Club leagues are a huge contributor toward this commitment as well as SPARK (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) sponsored by United Way of Porter County. A researched based curriculum, SPARK’s philosophy is to include ALL youth, actively engage ALL youth, and instill the love of lifelong movement in ALL youth!

Youth of the Year

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier youth recognition program. For nearly 70 years, this program has honored and celebrated the nation’s most inspiring teens and their incredible stories - stories of outstanding leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County’s Youth of the Year candidates exemplify our mission and are proof of the impact Clubs make in transforming and saving kids’ lives.

Sanja Kirova – Portage Club Member Porter County Youth of the Year In 2009, my family moved to the United States from Macedonia with nothing but four suitcases and the hope for a more successful life. After settling down, school started and I was forced to attend the third grade again because of the language barrier. Since we did not have friends or relatives, my brother and I were sent to an affordable and safe afterschool place. Fortunately, we landed near our local Boys & Girls Club. The Club was the light at the end of my tunnel. This is where I found my dream.

Eric Allison – Duneland Club Member When I was younger, the Boys & Girls Club really helped me with my education and developing the skills I needed to excel in school. The Club showed me how to make learning fun and exciting. Through the Club, I found that I really enjoy math and that it is something I like doing not just in the classroom, but outside of class as well. The Club has shown me how I can be a leader in my Club, school, and community.

Vincente Benavidez – South Haven Club Member I was intrigued to find out what the local Boys & Girls Club had to offer. Walking up to the Club doors for the first time was intimidating. I felt as if I had to be an exceptional person to join. Walking through the doors was an entirely different feeling. Greetings from Club members and staff, that had no idea who I was, felt very warm and comforting. I realized this is where I wanted to be for the rest of my life. My Club has opened my eyes to a new world.

Taija Jackson – Valparaiso Club Member The Club has helped me to open up to many people. Before I came to the Club, I had a wall built around me that staff and other members helped to break down. I am looked up to at the Club by younger members, so I take it upon myself to be a leader and not a follower. The Club is a window of opportunity. From this window, you see a different perspective, a window that opens and never shuts. For me, the Club shows kids that their windows will forever be open.

A Year of Service Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County’s Torch and Keystone Clubs immersed themselves in community service initiatives that make a positive difference in their communities and worldwide. Duneland Club members teamed with the Chesterton-Duneland Kiwanis Club on the global Eliminate Project to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus. It only costs $1.80 for a shot helping a mother to give birth to healthy children. Duneland Club members sell snacks at the Club for $1.80 raising over $1,000 in 2015.

Club member Skylar Peffers was instrumental in this Club

project stating, “I want other kids to know that simply buying a drink at the Club to eliminate

your thirst also can help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.”

Portage Club members worked with Best Buddies Pet Pantry in collecting pet food for families who needed extra help by helped collect 1,545 pounds of pet food! South Haven Club’s Keystone Club partnered with the American Red Cross to save lives through several blood drive events, and the Valparaiso Club held a Holiday Overnight event with proceeds benefiting Hilltop Food Pantry.

The Future of Fine Art Club member art filled the hallway of Southlake Mall from October 23 – 25.

Members from both Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County and Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana displayed their artwork for the National Fine Arts Program.

Local judges awarded winners in each category: monochromatic drawing, multicolored drawing, pastel, watercolor, oil/acrylic, print making, mixed media, collage, sculpture and a collaborative group project. Each first place winner will travel to the 13-state Midwest regional competition.

“We are proud of our young people whose artwork has been recognized with the local awards of the Fine Arts Exhibit and wish each of them luck as they advance to the regional competition,” said Mark Jones, director of operations for Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County.

The Fine Arts Exhibit was funded by Indiana Arts Commission in partnership with Region One and Southshore Arts.

Awards Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Headquarters based in Atlanta honored Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County’s Board of Directors for achieving the Silver Level of the League of EAGLES Award. This is given to Club organizations that receive 85% to 100% board involvement in Engaging, Asking, Giving, Leading, Evaluating, and Serving.

Additionally, Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County is now recognized nationally as a Major Metro Organization. Major Metro organizations, engages organizations locally and nationally to actively participate in efforts to increase the reach, strength and leadership positon of the entire Boys & Girls Club Movement.

Individual Awards The National Medallion is given to a Board member for outstanding service to boys and girls and for giving exemplary service to a Boys & Girls Club. This award was given to Timothy D. Rice who serves as Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County’s Board Vice-Chair and Capital Campaign General Co-Chair.

The National Silver Medallion and Service To Youth Recognition awards are given to a Board member for outstanding service to boys and girls, as well as, exemplary service to a Club and to the national Movement in a geographic area or region. The Service To Youth Recognition also is given to a Board member for long-time service to a Boys & Girls Clubs organization. These awards were given to Nick Arnold for his ten years of Board service and his acumen for fundraising on behalf of the organization.

The National Award of Merit is given to individuals outside of Boys & Girls Clubs who have provided outstanding support to local Clubs. This year’s National Award of Merit was given to Gus Olympidis of Family Express for his devoted support of Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County.
