How Do You Know When It's Summer? One swallow does not a summer make...but how about a whole nestful? We watched our barn swallows build a nest and raise their young, just outside the Education Lab...and there are plenty of other signs that the summer is here!

Clockwise from right: Stephanie, Serriah, Tiffany, and Frank dress as book characters for our summer book fair... Caleb, Ethan, Harley, Kaleigh, Kamry, Meadow, Michael, Michelle, and Luke play games in the shade of the pavilion... Apprentice Stephen helps to maintain the grounds... ...and Lyndon, Jean Paul, Jacob, Taylor, Sherry, and Meadow take a dip in the pool!

Message from the Chair of the Board Boys and Girls Country is beginning a new chapter in its history. After over 13 years as Executive Director, Shirley Wright has departed. She leaves a legacy that is perhaps best summed up by the plaque presented to her by the Board of Directors that read: “The great ones define their calling and set the standard for those who follow. You have done that for us and we will be forever grateful.” So, while children will miss her, and staff will miss her, and the Board and all the friends of Boys and Girls Country will miss her – we are determined not to fail in meeting the standards she has set for us. So we must simply pause to wish Shirley God’s blessing and our encouragement as she goes off to make the world a better place in another place.

Mike Gatewood Chair of the Board

Elaine Petranek, our outstanding Director of Development for the last 11 years, agreed, at the request of the Board, to step in as Interim Director. Elaine was just the right person to fill this role. She is loved by our kids. She has the support and loyalty of an outstanding administrative staff. She has the respect of our amazing group of dedicated houseparents. And, she has played an important role in helping Shirley set those standards. Elaine has seen us seamlessly through the last two months of transition and we owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude.

We have great news in the announcement that Mr. Lou Palma has joined us as Executive Director of Boys and Girls Country. Lou – known to the kids as “Mr. Lou” – has over 30 years experience in residential care. He has visited our campus – twice – and he attended our Awards Banquet. He was blown away by our kids and our highly dedicated and professional staff. He knows we have an amazing program, and calls us a “gem.” Lou began his career 35 years ago at Father Flanagan’s Boys Home and spent 24 years there, where he served in every role from direct service delivery to Program Director, Regional Director, and Director of Admissions. He comes to us most recently from Las Vegas, Nevada where he has worked as the Manager of Child Welfare Services for the Clark County Department of Family Services. Lou has a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work from the University of Nebraska and a master's degree in Human Development and Family Life from the University of Kansas. We ask all of our great volunteers and supporters to join the Board and the staff in welcoming Lou to Boys and Girls Country, and to help and support Lou as he works, not just to maintain our standard, but to set the bar even higher. I thank all of you, who do so much for our kids,

Introducing Lou Palma, our new Executive Director!

Mike Gatewood Chair of the Board

Congratulations, Class of 2009! All the world is a stage for the Class of 2009! We are proud of our graduating seniors...who can now take a bow for their achievements. We are grateful to you, our friends in the community who have been the supporting cast, the faithful patrons of this great stage, and the avid theatergoers who sat in the front row to watch the story unfold. In this curtain call, we honor these leading men before we send them on to the next stage in their lives. Break a leg, graduates!

Andrew Karl Crowe

George Albert Fraser V

People often overestimate what they aren’t and underestimate what they are. Andrew is an inspiring example of determination, faith, and hard work. He set his life in motion along an upward track, and encourages others to do the same. His dedication earned him a place on the Honor Roll, along with scholarships from the Bill Edwards Scholarship Fund and the Orphan Foundation of America. He received the Gerry Lyon Memorial Award for his grateful heart and positive attitude. Skilled in mechanics, Andrew plans to earn his Associate's degree in Aeronautical Maintenance Technology from Texas State Technical College before earning his bachelor's degree.

2009

It is what it is.

George is generous in sharing everything from his talents and personality to any good fortune that comes his way. He loves to make people laugh, and has a great sense of humor...and his acting abilities landed him a role in Waller High School's major musical production. George cares deeply for those around him, and loves to share everything he receives. Bold and confident, he can set his mind to something and pursue it with great determination. George has planned to attend Lone Star College to complete his basic requirements before transferring to Sam Houston State University to major in Criminal Justice.

2009

1998 Dean Dustin 1998 Guerra

There are people who make things happen, those who watch what happens, and those who wonder what happened. Dean gives fully of himself, on stage and off stage. His theatre talent earned him the title of International Honor Thespian, as well as a place in HYPE (Houston Young Playwrights Exchange) through Alley Theatre, and Heifer International’s Theatre Project. An Honor Roll student, he served as an officer in the Waller High School Theater Group and the Texas Association of Future Educators. Dean is gracious, giving, and always faithful to his values and the people he loves. He earned a full scholarship to Wake Forest University, where he will major in Theatre, with a double focus in acting and directing.

2001 Piero Antonio Pretto III

I consider all things lost compared to the priceless gain of knowing Christ. -Philippians 3:8 Piero has taken a leading role in his own life and on our campus. His determination and efforts in school and his personal life paid off as his grades soared, and his path toward leadership and service unfolded. He served as chair of the Normative Leadership Council, and was elected Resident of the Year by his peers. Piero earned scholarships from the Bill Edwards Scholarship Fund, Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union, and the Orphan Foundation of America. He plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State University to major in Communications, with a minor in Religious Studies. Page 3

Spring Festival '09: Rain and Shine The 2009 Spring Festival, originally scheduled for May 2nd, was canceled after a heavy rainstorm that flooded many areas of town and left our fields too soggy to carry out the festival. There was no way the water would dry up in the week we had, and we could not relocate any part of the festival or reschedule due to the logistics of this huge event... which had been in planning for a year. We know that the foot of water we received would cause our guests' cars -- and shoes -- to sink into the mud. These particularly challenging circumstances forced us to break our commitment to hold the festival, rain or shine. The festival would have raised a significant portion of our budget, and the loss of potential revenues from the day of the event put even more of a damper on an already financially difficult year...but there was a silver lining as friends stepped forward to make up for the revenues we lost by cancelling. There was rain, but there was shine...and we are grateful to all of you who made it possible. Right: After the rain We are still a little short of our goal. When Life Gives You Lemons...

As part of our effort to make up for revenues lost through the Spring Festival cancellation, our children set up a lemonade stand and sold the baked goods that were originally donated for the festival. Thanks to a partnership with Prepared 4 Life, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that prepares youth for life through fun programs that teach life skills and entrepreneurship, our children participated in a city-wide Lemonade Day. They learned how to run a successful business, from planning and finances to marketing and sales. Their efforts raised over $1,000 on Lemonade Day! Thank you to all who joined us, and helped our children to make lemonade out of lemons.

Easter Around the World This past spring, we celebrated cultural diversity, and our children learned about “Easter Around the World through staff members who have lived in other parts of the world... and shared in a few traditions. Left: And they're off! Right: Joshua participated in the South American tradition of creating Easter artwork on the pavement Below: Ms. Kristi leads the Bunny Hop on the way to the Easter egg hunt
