2023 IMPACT REPORT GREAT FUTURES START HERE.

Dear Friends of BGCC,

We are deeply grateful for your unwavering commitment to our mission and the youth we serve. Over the past year, our team has had the privilege of welcoming over 5,700 young people daily through our after-school enrichment program and Playworks, our school day program. Your steadfast support makes an immense impact on the academic, social, and emotional development of the youth touched by our programs. We are thrilled to share some highlights of the remarkable progress we’ve achieved together.

Mental Health Support Recognizing the critical need for timely mental health support, we have expanded our team by adding a full-time social worker. Additionally, with the invaluable support of District Supervisor Holly Mitchell, we have launched The Happy Heart Journal Program across all middle and high school Clubs. This program equips students with coping mechanisms and life skills to navigate their teen years successfully.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) A total of 1,686 students, spanning from elementary to high school, have actively participated in our STEM programming. Moreover, our high school students are engaged in CyberPatriot, a prestigious national cyber educational program created by the Armed Forces Association to guide students toward careers in cybersecurity and other STEM disciplines.

Student Voice. Student Choice: Last year, three students had the extraordinary opportunity to visit Sacramento for Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Days of Advocacy. Building upon this success, we are expanding the program to include 12 students to visit Sacramento and Washington D.C. These experiences not only expose our Club members to the legislative process but also empower them to advocate for issues they believe in while fostering meaningful connections with peers nationwide.

Your partnership and unwavering support continue to inspire us. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your incredible generosity and championing of our shared mission to Build Great Futures for youth in need.

With gratitude and appreciation,

DOING WHATEVER IT TAKES TO BUILD GREAT FUTURES

ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAMS

STEM: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATH

BGCC offers hands-on project based robotics, biology, chemistry, coding, podcasting, engineering and physics. To practice their skills, we encourage middle and high school students to participate in our annual STEM Day competition where they have the opportunity to showcase their science projects.

ACADEMIC CASE MANAGEMENT AND COLLEGE BOUND

We believe it’s never too early to prepare students for post-secondary options. That’s why beginning in the 4th grade we provide one-onone academic counseling to keep them on track to graduate high school on time and pursue their career and/or college goals.

The programs also include workshops and support for parents, since many of our graduates are the first in their families to pursue education beyond high school.

CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP

YOUTH OF THE YEAR

In the 21st-century world and workplace, leadership skills such as communication, goal setting and teamwork are essential for everyoneespecially young people preparing to meet the challenges of adulthood. This program encourages students to dedicate themselves to leadership and service, while focusing on their writing and public speaking skills. In 2023, we launched an Elementary Youth of the Year for 4th and 5th graders. Why? Our staff insisted.

“ I want to make a difference in this world for youth like me - youth who experience hardships at home. Youth who are searching for a place of belonging, I know that I, along with the Boys & Girls Club, can provide this for them.”

Every high school student who goes through the Youth of the Year program receives a Step Up Scholarship thanks to Harriet Switzer, a longtime advocate, volunteer and founder of the fund. To learn more contact Nina Patel at npatel@bgccarson.org.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

BGCC implements programs that develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors, to nurture their well-being, set personal goals and grow into self-sufficient adults. We focus on physical health as well as mental health.
