Next year we will convene our first ever Archdiocesan Synod in Adelaide.

Very broadly, a Synod is about everyone coming together. It’s about listening to and engaging clergy, religious and lay people in meaningful dialogue to strengthen a sense of community and shared mission.

The 2026 Synod is a significant step to helping ensure the Church remains responsive to contemporary challenges and opportunities. As such, we give thanks for the many listening and discernment moments that are taking place across our Archdiocese among Parishes, the various diocesan ministries and, of course, among schools.

Catholic schools fit within the broader context of Parish and we are committed to continual strengthening of the school and parish relationship and exploring ways of being Church together.

Education, social outreach and pastoral care

quality, faith-based education to thousands of students, forming them not only in knowledge but also in faith and character, forming both saints and scholars.

Our Catholic agencies have responded with compassion to those in need – refugees and asylum seekers, the homeless, families in crisis and the vulnerable. We are deeply thankful for the presence of Christ made visible through these ministries of service and love.

This Jubilee year, proclaimed by Pope Francis as a time of renewal, reconciliation and mission, also asks us to become a more united, more generous and more welcoming Church.

Twelve months ago, I wrote here how impressed I am by students’ confidence and openness as well as their passion for social justice and helping others.

I have no doubt that teachers, students and everyone connected with our schools will continue to work towards these ends while reflecting on the aims and many rewards of the Jubilee and the Synod.

FAITH IN THE FUTURE

CELEBRATING 180 YEARS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA,

CATHOLIC EDUCATION CONTINUES TO PROVIDE A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT FOR TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Growing across the state, since their inception, Catholic schools remain at the heart of the community. They are places where children and families can come together, support each other and experience an education that is about gaining knowledge as much as it is about developing faith in God and each other.

For Dr Neil McGoran, Executive Director of Catholic Education South Australia (CESA), the message of hope and inspiration through focused education is getting through and the future is looking brighter than ever.

“These are interesting times for us,” he explains.

“We’ve had our highest number of enrolments ever. We are likely to exceed 56,000 students by the August census and we have been increasing by about 2,000 students a year for the last few years.”

But while the numbers continue to grow, there has always been a delicate balancing act of providing quality education to an increasing number of children.

“The Archbishop describes our schools as places where we nurture and develop saints and scholars and it’s a nice way to see it,” Dr McGoran says.

“If you think about this from a parent’s point of view, when you look at which school you might send your child to, you have all these ideas and you also have a goal in mind – for your child to complete their journey to the end of school, and to experience an education that builds within the person a sense of ‘your best self’ while also encouraging the best in others. This is the kind of community that we aim to build.”

Reaching another milestone this year with the announcement of a new school in the northern Adelaide suburb of Riverlea Park, CESA is putting words into action by continuing to grow in South Australia and instilling this sense of community more broadly.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to say that there is a Catholic school at the heart of Riverlea Park, and through that Catholic school, there is a strong feeling of community,” he says.

“The new school at Riverlea Park helps that and

WORDS SAM KELTON PHOTOGRAPHY NAOMI JELLICOE

we’ve had other expansions in recent times. We’ve really committed ourselves to all our schools and to investing in the infrastructure and the way schools look. 180 years ago the school could have been the church or a hall, but in 2025 the school must look magnificent and become a hub of activity and hope.”

Dr McGoran says that throughout its history CESA is becoming better equipped to deliver not only what parents want for their children, but problem solve for those experiencing financial hardship. They are also delivering better outcomes for children who may require specialist intervention.

“We have learned what works and doesn’t work, but we have remained absolutely committed to the purpose of a Catholic education – that it is an expression of the Church mission, accessible to anybody, and committed to forming the whole person: mind, heart, and soul” he says.

“Which means, amongst other aspects, we make enormous remissions of fees for families who need financial assistance. We also have a scholarship scheme that’s available to children under the care of the Chief Executive of the Department for Child Protection.

“Our investment across all schools is designed to

support learning and different types of learners. We’ve invested in a curriculum framework that includes allied health professionals being available.

“We know some children need more time than others, so they can be developmentally ready for their next phase of learning, so we’ve invested in that too.

The earlier that you can support children in their learning and language acquisition, for instance, the better it is for them in their capacity to keep learning.”

It is this investment and progressive model of schooling that is helping break down barriers that may have in the past affected a parent’s decision making around Catholic schooling.

“One of the things that I’ve been thinking about is some parents might say, ‘but we’re not Catholic and our children aren’t Catholic’,” he explains.

“Importantly, Catholic schools are more than educational institutions – they must be communities of encounter, accompaniment, and formation. All children and young people are welcome – and all are invited to build their relationships with God, with their best selves, and with other people.”

Dr McGoran says that, in the last five years, community particularly in schooling has become paramount. Largely due to the unintended

says some children in schools were worried, along with parents who were anxious about what was going on in the world and what the impacts might be for them.

“We made it through that.”.

“I think we realised how important it is to be together in community,” he says.

“I think that was a real lesson that came out of that. Now that it’s five years down the track, children have the right to feel safe and they can go to school and can come home at the end of the day to a loving home. Parents can also feel safe knowing their children are surrounded by committed people, with the right tools, to nurture their growth in the community.”

Dr McGoran remains excited for the future ahead of another busy intake in 2026 knowing that the complex task of choosing a school for our children is becoming easier through CESA’s dedication to faith, excellence and community.

“This is the most amazing job I’ve ever had because I get to work with inspiring people. We have terrific principals and staff who are capable of achieving enormous things.

“I know that, through their work and passion, the next generation of students are in the safest of hands.”

SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE

Building the right education pathway today for the booming population of tomorrow

In response to a significant population growth in Adelaide’s northern suburbs Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) recently announced a new school, Xavier College Riverlea Park. Due to open in January 2027, it will be the first school to be built in Riverlea, the masterplanned residential community by Walker Corporation, which is projected to be home to 40,000 residents in the future.

Initially serving students from Reception to Year 6, the school will progressively grow to provide a full academic pathway through to Year 12.

An Early Learning Centre (ELC) will also open onsite in January 2027 for children aged from six weeks to five years of age, operated by Eden Grove. Since its establishment in 1995, Xavier College has been committed

to growing with and in response to the needs of the local community, embracing change and seeking to provide educational opportunities that prepare students for the world ahead. Riverlea Park will be the fourth campus for Xavier College.

The development represents a unique opportunity to deliver a school of the future with state-of-the-art facilities while also establishing itself as a cornerstone of this growing community.

The Riverlea Park Campus has been thoughtfully designed with students at its centre from the bright, flexible classrooms to the shared learning areas and welcoming outdoor spaces that encourage exploration, connection and wellbeing.

Xavier College is committed to providing an authentic learning environment where all members of the

College community are transformed by their experiences into fuller, richer, deeper human beings.

Principal Mark Flaherty speaks passionately about the strong foundations students will be given:

“From the first day of school in 2027 and beyond, we will be committed to building core skills in literacy and numeracy, then extending these with a rich range of subjects to fuel curiosity, creativity and critical thinking for each student.”

Mr Flaherty also believes that the newly created Riverlea community will benefit greatly from the presence the school is set to have.

“The number of houses that are being built is quite incredible,” he says of Riverlea.

“It’s becoming a community very quickly. I was visiting recently, and the children were playing in the

playgrounds and parents were out and about. It’s a really vibrant community already and when these children are ready, we can further strengthen this community with our facilities and curriculum.”

Innovative design features of the Riverlea Park Campus include STEM Maker Spaces, Multimedia Studios, a Food Technology Centre with integrated rooftop garden, a Sacred Space and a First Nations cultural heritage trail.

An adjoining community and sports facility with district level sporting grounds, including a soccer pitch and multisport oval will be delivered at the same time as stage 1 of the school as part of a shared-use agreement with the City of Playford council.

“These grounds will be amazing,” Mr Flaherty says.

“There will be lots of space for physical education and sports lessons, extracurricular opportunities and playtime during the week. But after hours the community will be able to use these spaces, which will be fantastic.”

Riverlea resident Bonnie Skeers, pictured far left, with her family, is excited at the prospect of the new construction on her doorstep.

“It’s fantastic knowing that by the time our kids are ready for school, they’ll have access to great education right here in Riverlea,” she says.

With more than 2600 students across the existing three Xavier College campuses, the number is set to boom in the coming years, but the school is ready and well equipped to welcome these new students and their families.

“I think it’s very exciting,” Mr Flaherty says.

“It’s great that Catholic education has an opportunity to move further into the northern area of Adelaide and build an impressive school that serves this community. A lot of the local families are keen to see where this project takes schooling in the area.”

Enrolment applications to the new campus are now being accepted. To apply or for more information visit: https://www.xavier.catholic.edu.au/ riverlea-park or contact: 08 8521 4500.

EARLY LEARNING CENTRE EXPANSION

Construction has begun on the first of two new Early Learning Centres (ELCs) in Adelaide’s north as part of Catholic Education South Australia’s commitment to develop stronger educational pathways from the early years to Year 12.

In partnership with Accord, who will be responsible for construction of the centres and operated by childcare provider Eden Academy, the ELCs, known as Eden Grove are set to open over the next 18 months and pave the way for further developments across the state.

The centres will include pre-school and day care services, the first will be co-located at Xavier College Two Wells and at Xavier College Riverlea Park when the new school opens in 2027.

Planning is progressing on additional sites, and Catholic Education South Australia Executive Director, Dr Neil McGoran says the expansion is carefully laying the foundations for a solid future in early childhood development.

“Our ELC expansion will meet the increasing demand for Catholic education across South Australia,” he says. “The early years play a vital role in every child’s development, and we believe that together we can provide exceptional early learning centres for the growing needs of South Australians. This is part of a commitment to develop stronger educational pathways from the early years through to Year 12.”

The Two Wells ELC, currently under construction, will cater for 141 children from six weeks of age until 5 years old. It is expected to open in Term 3, 2026.

RIDING THE DIGITAL WAVES

Students embrace a new wave of learning by finding their groove to the rhythm of education

At St Martin de Porres School, Sheidow Park, students are tuning into a new way of learning. It’s a brave new world helmed by teacher Damon Adams, a former radio host and producer, allowing students to be creative and express themselves in a cutting-edge Media and Arts program.

Embracing digital technologies and modern media platforms, children through years 3 to 6, are being provided the tools to produce audio books, digital artworks, movie trailers and Lego stop motion, while also exploring cartooning, comic creation, coding and photography.

The school and its specialised curriculum aim to provide high quality learning experiences through a range of digital technologies, taking the classroom into the 21st century.

“It was only a matter of time before it crept into the curriculum,” Mr Adams

explains. “I’m doing a lot of radio and podcasting with the year sixes but then, through different avenues, I’m able to explore creativity with the kids which is quite unique and obviously fun for myself as well.”

Combining a range of digital technologies in his teaching, the class also includes units on cyber safety and responsible online behaviour.

Mr Adams says that living in a content heavy world, children are given the opportunity to curate their own content. His role is to feed that creativity but also provide them with technical skills .

“What I’m hoping to show them is how to produce quality content by allowing them to flex that creativity in a really healthy and exciting space,” he explains.

“The children are given the chance to make artwork, animations, games, videos and podcasts while also exploring their own interests as well.

This can be from stop motion in year four, where they’re telling stories that they want to tell, right up to the podcasts they record which are in subjects that they consider themselves experts in.”

The class culminates with Year 6 students mastering podcasting and running the school radio station SMDPS radio where they produce a live radio segment three mornings a week. Mr Adams says that while learning about the various media and platforms, students are engaged like never before and some are showing real talent in the world of digital media.

“We are having a lot of fun while they are learning valuable technical skills,” he says.

“It’s clear to see that some of the kids are super excited and confident when it comes to having a camera or a microphone in front of them..... there really are some natural born performers amongst the bunch.”

SHOOTING FOR SUCCESS

One-on-one for building skills and having fun

It’s a full court press at Our Lady of Grace (OLOG), partnering with the South Adelaide Basketball Club to create the Hounds Basketball Academy, helping young athletes excel both on and off the court.

Based in Glengowrie, OLOG is now home to one of the first Basketball Academies in an SA primary school and aims to develop students by providing expert coaching and training.

Basketball is a key component of the school’s curriculum, offering skill development and improved fitness along with mental wellbeing and an emphasis on teamwork.

Through physical education and co-curricular opportunities, as the students progress, advanced coaching techniques and strategies are introduced.

The Academy is open to all students interested in the sport who are then given the opportunity to represent OLOG in competitions.

Principal Josette Charles says the academy is the perfect breeding ground for not only future stars of the game but provides students with an important sense of community.

“Basketball is a vital part of our school’s vibrant and diverse community,” she says. “With a rich history and a local community club,

BRUSH OF LIFE

our partnership with South Adelaide Basketball Club allows us to develop deep and meaningful player and coaching pathways for our students.”

“This exciting initiative will give students the chance to build their basketball skills with expert coaching while also learning valuable life skills they can carry beyond the court.”

Through teamwork the partnership will equip students with the necessary tools to steer them towards the success and enjoyment of playing competitive sports in a club environment.

“At OLOG, players do not just wear a jersey; they wear an identity, a badge that represents something greater than themselves,” Ms Charles says.

Simon Crowden, General Manager of South Adelaide Basketball Club and a high-performance basketball coach, is excited about the partnership and potential it delivers.

“We have a long history of South Adelaide players attending OLOG – a fantastic local school that fosters not only academic excellence but also a strong sense of community and sportsmanship,” he says.

“We look forward to continuing this tradition and helping the next generation of basketball talent thrive.”

At Thomas More College, students are not only learning valuable lessons from honouring the past but breathing life into the future.

Priding itself on providing a comprehensive and diverse curriculum, a wide range of opportunities to celebrate and embrace community are front and centre to help students achieve their full potential.

Late last year, Year 9 and 10 students took part in the Parafield Railway Station Rejuvenation Project. This initiative was made possible through the generous support of Local MP John Fulbrook and the Rail Care group from the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.

Year 10 art students worked with local artist Ella Simpson to design and paint a mural inspired by the theme ‘Bring Back the Butterflies’, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation.

The students, alongside local experts played a hands-on role in creating the mural, bringing their ideas to life at the Parafield Railway Station.

The process gave them insight into how public art projects are executed. For Acting Principal Shannon Bertram the work showcased a strong sense of

community, instilling valuable lessons of sustainability and connecting people through collaboration.

“Through the scheme, Thomas More College students and staff had the opportunity to connect with our local MP, a professional artist, and Rail Care to design and create a vibrant display of creativity and community spirit,” he says.

“This experience resulted in a student-led visual art project that brought colour and life to our local train platform.”

Adelaide based artist Ella Simpson says it was a wonderful experience to help students, acting as a mentor to help bring their design ideas to life.

“Public art and these kinds of rejuvenation projects are really important in connecting people to places and encouraging pride in the local community,” she says.

An initiative never before undertaken by Catholic schools, it brought multiple students together to work within the local community on public infrastructure seen by students and the community every day.

Throughout the project, students also helped plant 2,000 native plants, contributing to the ongoing revitalisation of the station precinct.

As the only five-day boarding facility in South Australia, St Mark’s College, Port Pirie offers boarders and their families an important connection between home and school.

The brand new, state-of-the art boarding house at St Mark’s College opened earlier this year and features a recreation and dining room, 33 bedroom-pods and an outdoor leisure

area. 31 regional and remote students from across the state benefit from individual air-conditioned bedrooms complete with ensuite and study area, constructed around a central courtyard.

Principal Dr Sandra Hewson says that boarding students play an integral role in the school’s community, and the College is committed to providing exceptional education and support to its students.

“Boarders bring a unique vibrancy

and diversity to our school community, enriching the lives of all students and staff. Boarding life fosters a sense of independence, resilience, and camaraderie among students, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

“This year we are celebrating not just the opening of a new building, but a significant investment in the future of rural and regional education in the Diocese of Port Pirie,” she said.

“By providing state-of-the-art facilities and a nurturing environment, we are ensuring that students from regional and remote areas have access to the same high-quality education and opportunities as their urban counterparts.”

Among the students taking full advantage of the breadth of St Mark’s new boarding house is Year 11 boarder Millie who returns home on a Friday afternoon after her school week is complete.

Growing up on a large cattle farm ‘Princess Royal Station’ near Burra in the state’s Mid North, the unique boarding experience at St Mark’s appealed to Millie and her family as it allows her to stay connected to her

home and her community. “Being on the farm is special. The freedom and open spaces- it’s where I want to be,” she says.

“I belong in the agricultural industry and know that whatever I do in the future, it will involve farming and animals.”

When Millie started boarding at St Mark’s College she was excited about the opportunities offered.

“Boarding is a good experience and the facilities are amazing... I really like the inclusion and the way our supervisors organise activities for us to engage together,” she says

“I came from a small school, so coming to St Mark’s has opened up a range of opportunities both academically and personally. I am able to access different subjects as well as meeting so many people and making new friends.”

Enrolments are now open for 2026 and 2027. If you would like to find out more about boarding at St Mark’s, come to a tour of our Secondary Campus (visit www.smc.catholic.edu. au/enrolment for upcoming dates) or contact the Enrolments Registrar, Lisa Manners, (08) 8633 8836.

SHARING THE VISION

Two minds are better than one when it comes to learning

Two is almost always better than one and that’s certainly the case for Star of the Sea school’s innovative and community focused concept of co-principals.

In a first for Catholic Education in South Australia, Annette Diassinas and Kelly Manera commenced their substantive Co-Principal roles at Star of the Sea School at the beginning of 2025, pivoting from the traditional structure seen in most South Australian schools. United by a shared passion for education and deep-rooted commitment to the school community, the joint role brings a rich blend of experience, diverse perspectives, and collaborative leadership to Star of the Sea.

These were the key motivations in applying for the role as a team and together they bring over 20 years of combined experience and knowledge

of Star of the Sea’s history. While coleadership has proven effective in the corporate sector, the pair say it has been exciting to see this approach embraced within Catholic education and they have so far received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Star of Sea Board Chair Dr Kirsty McCullouch said “As a mother, working in leadership and organisational culture, I’ve been privileged to work closely with them both as they’ve stepped into the co-principal role. They work together with outstanding alignment. They are equally warm and approachable but set clear boundaries of expectations within the community.

“The co-principal model means they can support each other during sensitive, or difficult leadership situations. The pair present an incredibly strong and positive leadership approach and they have been incredibly professional and positive in every situation.”

The co-principal model seemingly allows the pair to find more hours in the day to deal with the pressures of school leadership.

“Together, we navigate challenges and celebrate successes, drawing strength from each other’s insights and allowing us to focus on what’s most important for our community of learners and support to families,” Ms Manera says.

“This model allows us to blend our unique strengths and perspectives, creating a solid leadership model,” Ms Diassinas adds. “Our partnership sets a visible example for teachers and students about the power of teamwork and mutual respect. It’s rewarding to see staff and students feel more supported knowing that leadership is accessible and that their concerns are heard promptly because we can divide our time and attention.”

Since adopting the co-principal model with each principal on site

four days a week and a three-day crossover this leadership team has become more visible within the school community. This structure has enhanced collaborative decision-making and allowed for greater flexibility and responsiveness within a strong team framework. The school is reaping the rewards of the dual role, while the teachers themselves are finding benefits that extend beyond the schoolyard and long after the final bell rings.

“Although still only early days we hope that this model allows for greater flexibility in managing work-life balance, particularly as women in roles of leadership” Ms Manera says.

“Leadership can be demanding, but sharing responsibilities enables us to support each other in maintaining a sustainable workload. This ultimately benefits the entire school, as we bring our best selves, energised and focused, to our work every day.”

HELPING HANDS

Every student should be afforded all possible opportunities to ensure success in their education and beyond.

This is the foundation of the Catholic Education of South Australia’s (CESA) Improved Learning through Allied Health (CILAH) initiative, aimed at enhancing student inclusion, access, and equity for students with disabilities.

The outreach allied health service utilises the expertise of allied health professionals to support teaching and learning practices in Catholic schools.

This program connects schools to psychologists, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists who collaborate with educators to build their capacity and understanding to support students in the classroom.

Tailored to meet the specific needs of each school, educator, student, and

Ensuring every student can achieve their full potential

family, these services seek to provide a holistic approach to support that can go beyond the four walls of the classroom.

The program focuses on strengthening classroom practices, adapting learning environments, and embedding inclusive approaches within everyday school life to ensure each child is given the tools to navigate their schooling journey.

Working in tandem with the CILAH team are Catholic Education South Australia’s Diversity and Inclusion team.

This is comprised of trained educators known as System Coaches, who work with schools to support students in reaching their goals and assist with improving educator skills, developing learning plans, and identifying student needs.

CESA Manager of Allied Health Kim Wigg says the CILAH professionals work directly with teachers, education support staff, leadership teams and

families. It aims to introduce and implement evidence-based strategies that enhance student learning and participation.

“CILAH is about embedding highquality allied health supports into the heart of our schools so every student, particularly those with disability, can access equitable, inclusive learning environments where they thrive,” she says.

“We recognise it’s the teachers who are the change makers in a student’s life. So our role is to partner with the teachers, with the educators and walk alongside them.

“We problem solve with them and provide an additional specialist lens to equip them with the tools and the strategies they need to create inclusive classrooms where every student can participate and find success.”

Ms Wigg says that since the inception of the program the response

from schools and their communities has been a resounding success.

“Service delivery started early term one, so it’s still quite new and we haven’t been operational for that long, but we’ve had really strong engagement from schools across the state,” she says.

“That’s both our metro and our regional schools and we’ve been working across primary, and secondary schools.”

The CILAH program is not a replacement for NDIS or private therapy services however instead, it supports schools in developing inclusive educational practices that benefit all students.

With a focus on equipping educators with the knowledge and strategies to support students within the school setting, there is no cost to families for CILAH support and services.

STRING TO THEIR BOW

Student success is music to their ears

Adynamic and dedicated music program at St Francis of Assisi School in Newton is helping put students in tune with their creativity and creating harmony in the school community.

Introduced earlier this year, Year 3 students are offered the opportunity to access a specialised music education through ‘The Strings Immersion Program’ which has been embedded into the curriculum.

By removing financial constraints, every Year 3 student is now given the opportunity to learn a classical string instrument with a goal to foster creativity, build confidence, and create a strong sense of belonging through music.

The program has quickly become a much-loved part of the school week and Principal Scott March says there has been a noticeable shift in how students view music and themselves, with growing confidence, collaboration, and commitment.

THE RITE CHOICE

Bringing balance to students’ lives

One of the most important aspects of a child’s schooling life is their journey into young adulthood.

“Students are given the opportunity to play the violin and cello in smaller groups and they’ve absolutely taken to it. Their discipline in practising each night and across the course of the week has been better than we ever could have expected,” he says.

Mubarak is among the Year 3 cohort taking part in the Strings Immersion Program and is enjoying learning the craft.

“It has been fun learning the violin and playing violin with my friends at school. I like doing the strings concerts because I showed everyone the music that I learnt. People sit down and they listen to the music,” he says.

“I practise every day. Practising makes me get better and better at playing the violin.”

Mr March says the program is not only opening doors for students but equipping them with key musical skills ahead of their secondary education.

“We’re really optimistic that we will have at least half of our kids continue post the end of the program,” he explains.

Balancing academia and the maturing minds of students, St Paul’s College, Gilles Plains has introduced The Rite Journey, an initiative helping shift the focus towards wellbeing and mental health development in the school’s community.

A year-long wellbeing program for Year 9 students, which was introduced to the College for the first time this year, it is designed to transform teens and acknowledge each student’s shift into adulthood.

The program commenced with the significant Calling and Departure Ceremony, a cultural practice that marked the important step the Year 9 students are taking.

Students and parents wrote letters to each other, which were shared privately during a garden-themed event. This experience encouraged reflection and connection between students and their families.

Students then participate in two lessons per week for the program before embarking on a two-day camp. Genevieve Turnbull, Leader of Wellbeing for Years 7-9, says students have embraced the program and displayed positive attitudes to the initiative so far.

“Students have developed better cohesion across the year level, which has expanded social networks for some previously isolated students,” she says.

“We have seen better social and emotional outcomes for students in Year 9 with the cohort having not only new students in their support networks, but their passionate Rite Journey Teacher and their personal mentors.”

Throughout the year, students are contributing to a Year 9 time capsule, adding significant items, including a letter to themselves that will be opened in Year 12. “I have found the program to be helpful as it shapes our adulthood. I have enjoyed the program so far, especially the event where we got together with our parents and gave them a letter,” year 9 student Brahm says.

Fellow Year 9 student Eva says the program has been a solid foundation for her transition into adulthood. “I’ve enjoyed expressing myself through Rite Journey and learning about others’ experiences,” she says.

In times of increasing uncertainty and external pressures, young people need more than just academic education, St Paul’s College Principal Patrick Harmer says.

“The Rite Journey offers a powerful and timely experience that supports adolescents in developing a strong sense of identity, values, and moral grounding, while fostering deep connection and belonging,” he says.

Emotions play a significant role in the learning process for young children, working hand in hand with how they engage with their surroundings.

The behavioural development of children is paramount, as growing minds learn to process not only their education but how they interact with teachers, parents and their peers.

Three schools in the state’s southeast are delving deeper into children’s hearts and minds, embracing a program that helps students identify and express their emotions, self-regulation, problem solving, and communication.

Mary MacKillop Memorial School, Penola, Tenison Woods College, Mt Gambier, and St Anthony’s School, Millicent all utilise the Kimochis Social and Emotional Wellbeing Program.

Focusing on student behaviour, the Kimochis program (meaning feeling in Japanese) is a social-emotional learning program that teaches children emotional expression, including the tools to help them communicate in a respectful and responsible way and listen openly.

With each Kimochi character possessing a unique temperament and personality, they are paired with accompanying feelings that help students build their emotional

vocabulary. “My favourite Kimochi character is Lovey Dove because she helps me to feel calm,” Mary MacKillop student Ellis says.

“The Kimochis help me when I feel happy. It reminds me to share my happiness around. It helps me be a kind friend. I learned that when you’re joking around, jokes are only fun if they are fun for everyone.”

For fellow student Fletcher, it helps him to process his big feelings, often difficult for young children.

“The Kimochis help me when I feel sad, it reminds me to take a breath and calm down.”

“I like Kimochis because it helps me be a kind friend. I use the Keys to Communication to talk kindly even when I have big feelings.....when I use my feeling words, I feel brave.”

Mary MacKillop Memorial School, Penola, Reception and Year 1 educator Danni Heazlewood has been using the program throughout her teaching

journey and is seeing real breakthroughs with younger children being able to express themselves emotionally.

“Using the Kimochi characters and their stories gives children a relatable way to connect, helping them feel comfortable and proud to open up about their feelings without any shame,” she explains.

“It builds a culture of kindness and a culture of respect. It helps show children that all feelings are okay along with being able to listen, take turns and not talk over the top of each other.”

Ms Heazlewood says the program is an excellent early intervention tool for young children who are at a part of their life that is equally exciting as it is daunting.

“The great thing about the program is it’s a proactive measure rather than a reactive measure we put in place.

We can upskill children in how to deal with feelings in the moment and to be able to articulate what they are

feeling - and then manage that feeling.

“It has been powerful amongst the students coming into reception. They are often reluctant to tell you certain things, as all children are, but through this program we are able to unpack those emotions and talk about it in a way where the students can feel safe and connected.”

“This program has had a powerful impact on our reception students as they transition to school. While children often feel hesitant to share their emotions in unfamiliar environments and with new faces, the program creates a space where they feel safe to express themselves openly and develop essential interpersonal skills.”

St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, Millicent Reception teacher Kimberly Tincknell says the program gives children a tangible way to connect with their emotions.

“By holding or squeezing a character or feeling pillow, children can begin to process what they’re experiencing,” she says.“What once felt too big or confusing often becomes more manageable, and many children feel more comfortable sharing what’s going on for them.

“By equipping our students with these skills, we’re helping them build resilience, empathy, and confidence — essential foundations for learning and life.”

CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENTS SOUTH AUSTRALIA

A COMMUNITY OF PARTNERSHIP, EMPOWERMENT AND ADVOCACY

Choosing a Catholic school is more than an educational decision –it’s a commitment to a community that values and supports the role of parents as the first educators of their children.

Catholic School Parents South Australia (CSPSA) is the representative voice of parents and carers of children in Catholic schools across the state, advocating for their needs and supporting their role in education.

From delivering parent education seminars, listening to your concerns and advocating at all levels of government, we’re here to support Catholic school families in every way we can.

At Catholic School Parents South Australia (CSPSA), we work in close partnership with families and schools to ensure every child thrives. Joining a Catholic school means becoming

part of a community that values your voice and offers opportunities to actively engage in your child’s learning journey.

Our parent education events are designed to empower you. We listen to what matters most to families and bring in expert speakers to present on topics that are timely, relevant, and practical – from topics such as wellbeing and digital safety to faith

development. These events are more than information sessions, they’re spaces for growth, dialogue, and shared understanding.

Advocacy is a core part of what we do – representing Catholic school families in conversations that shape education policy and funding.

Our advocacy work includes engaging with government at both state and federal levels, contributing to legislative submissions, and striving to ensure fair and equitable funding for all students.

Your voice matters, and we ensure it’s heard where it counts.

When you join a Catholic school, you’re not just enrolling your child – you’re joining a community that walks with you, supports you, and strengthens your role as your child’s first educator.
