A

year is just about the right space of time to make the arrival of the different seasons feel fresh.

As the day is lengthened and spring gives way to summer we all rejoice in the sense of new life and abundant growth.

But that moment comes when we notice that the ‘nights are drawing in’ and the fresh grass gives way to beautiful autumnal colouring.

Somehow it is freshly beautiful each year and we are still capable of being surprised by it.

The same should be true of the seasons of the church’s year. We shall soon have harvest and then the end of the green season with an explosive shout of glory at the feast of Christ the King. We then move through a quieter and more reflective period of time which includes All Souls and then All Saints Day. Advent begins to loom and before long we are back at the moment when we look forward to the coming of Christ.

But both the seasons of the year and the seasons of the church are best experienced by participation not by mere observation. I remember that my parents used to have a really excellent gardening book that talked you through the year and reminded you of the various jobs that should be done. The church’s seasons, likewise, call us to fulfil our part and allow ourselves to be drawn into the action. This is the way to spiritual growth.

May God bless each of us as we seek to live His life in this world.

A Day in the Life of James Peill, Curator of the Goodwood Collection

O

n Saturday, 6th February this year, a historic event took place at Goodwood: the revival of the Charlton Hunt. The last time the Charlton Hunt had met was in the eighteenth century. Then, the Charlton Hunt

was synonymous with some of the best sport in the country. It is the earliest recorded foxhunt in the world and its fame drew the elite of society, including the Dukes of Monmouth, St Albans and Richmond, the dashing illegitimate sons of King Charles II. Richmond bought nearby Goodwood as a comfortable place to stay and entertain his illustrious friends during the hunting season. His son, the second Duke, shared his love of the chase and when he became Master, such was the success and desirability of the hunt, he decided that member-

ship should be restricted only to those who had been elected. Almost every noble family in the land had a representative at Charlton, including half of the Knights of the Garter. Lord Burlington designed for the members a handsome banqueting house at Charlton where they met after hunting, and many built themselves hunting-boxes in the village.

In February, my role involved telling the story of the Charlton Hunt.

At the invitation of the Earl of March, hunt followers from all over the country and the USA came for the weekend for a drag hunt using the hounds from the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunts.

Many wore hunting coats in the original Charlton Hunt blue, while the huntsman and hunt servants were dressed in the Richmond livery of yellow and red. We had a new Charlton Hunt button made to give to all the mounted participants and I helped liaise with both the button manufacturer, Firmins, and hunt tailor, Henry Poole.

When horses started arriving for the meet at Goodwood House, my sixyear old daughter, Flora, looked out

of my office window beneath the portico and exclaimed, ‘Daddy, this is the best day EVER!’ Leaving the meet, the mounted followers sallied forth over the ancient hunting terrain that had once provided such superb sport. Meanwhile, a fleet of Land Rovers swept the foot followers along a predetermined route for the best views. I was squashed in with a senior British general whose wife was riding. Appropriately, the field stopped for a stirrup cup at Fox Hall in Charlton before continuing the chase.

In the evening, my wife and I attended a magnificent hunt ball, held in the state rooms of Goodwood House, recalling those former dinners held in the Great Room of Charlton, a fitting end to a remarkable day when we made Goodwood history.

Sponsor a Nurse at St Wilfrid’s Hospice

S

t Wilfrid’s Hospice in Chichester has launched a brand new fundraising initiative aimed at engaging the community with the work of its nurses who provide such vital care for patients both in the Hospice and in their own homes. The ‘Sponsor a Nurse’ scheme will ask supporters for a monthly donation of their choice to help support local people at their time of need.

The nursing team enables each and every one of its patients, and their loved ones, to make the most of every day. Patients are encouraged to come to the Day Care facili-

ties to take part in activities, socialise and laugh. They come into the Ward for symptom control, or end of life care, and every step is taken to ensure they remain independent, with no restrictions placed on the visiting times of their family and friends – even their pets are welcome. Patients are helped to stay in their own homes, wherever possible, for as long as possible, supported by the St Wilfrid’s Community Nurses.

The Hospice relies on public support to raise 87% of its annual running costs, which this year will be just over £7 million. It is hoped the new scheme will help make an important contribution to raising the funds for the vital service it provides.

Nettles attract beautiful butterflies

M

any people look on nettles as a pernicious and sometimes painful weed, however, they do provide a home or valuable food source for over 40 insect species, including butterflies, moths and ladybirds, making them one of the most important native plants for wildlife in the UK. This is why they are encouraged, along with brambles and teazles, in the Priory churchyard conservation area.

Some of our most colourful butterflies choose to lay their eggs on nettles, where their caterpillars will hatch and munch their way through the leaves in a safe haven of stinging hairs that deter predators. The larvĂŚ of the small tortoiseshell and peacock butterflies feed in large groups, hidden from casual view in silken tents which they weave at the top of nettle stems.

A sunny nettle patch will also attract the comma butterfly, which was declining but has made a successful comeback in southern Britain in recent years and is now spreading northwards. This is a fascinating butterfly with its ragged wing edges and white comma on its underwing. The caterpillars are flecked with brown and white markings, looking like bird droppings; a deterrent to birds in search of a snack.

Nettles also provide an “aphid larder� as an important spring food source for ladybirds, blue tits and other birds able to peck through the stinging hairs. In late summer the seeds are also eaten by birds, along with the teazle seeds and bramble fruits.

The long grasses (at least 5 different species), along with the other plants, provide cover for many small mice and voles, which in turn provide food for the resident owls and other hunters.

Boxgrove CofE Primary School is 275!

T

he school is 275 years old this year and the Head thought you might want to see what they have been up to during their week-long celebrations at the end of last term.

What they did was...

O

n Monday the children looked at the history of our school. They learnt that it was established by Mary, the Countess of Derby. She was born in 1668 and inherited the manor of Halnaker on the death of her father in 1701. In 1741 the Countess wanted to bring the old and the young of the village together. She built the Almshouses to home 12 women in the parish and a school next door for 12 village children: 6 boys and 6 girls.

Other historical facts have also been uncovered e.g apparently we were the first school to have hot school dinners. These were provide by the

W.I ., many, many, many years ago!!

On Tuesday the children and staff looked absolutely fantastic in their historical costumes. They had: The Reception children dressed in 1940s The War Years Year 1s – 1980s Year 2s – 1960s Year 3s – 1970s Year 4s – 1950s Year 5s – 1920s Year 6s – Victorians The costume photographs are delightful, especially the one with the children standing as a real life timeline.

The photographs of the children trying foods from the decades are equally fun to look at! They happily tucked into tasters of Fry’s Peppermint Cream representing 1886, fruit cocktail 1900, arctic roll 1950, Angel Delight 1967 with the biggest “thumbs up” from all for 1937 Spam!

On Wednesday there was much number activity around 275. The first challenge of the day was in their house teams when the children had to make a container that could hold 275ml. We had a winning group from Blue Team: Oscar Brackenbury, Logan Cooper, Tom Dunster, Jacob Taylor and Casey Woodcock

whose container held exactly 275 ml of sand!

It was amazing to see what school uniforms of the future might look like yesterday! Such clever ideas seen from children wearing futuristic shoes e.g. heeleys or ones specially designed such as Lois Lutman-Pauc’s which you will be able to fly when you press a button. Others had ideas on what the uniform might look like, whether it be Molly Edwards’s Tshirt with a new school logo, Imogen Edwards “achievers t-shirt” thinking in the future when you receive an achiever’s certificate you should be

awarded a t-shirt too or like others who thought we might be living in space and had a spaceman feel to their designs e.g. Harry Betsworth’s.

Sisters, Angela and Rosie Hill had redesigned the uniform completely and came prepared with space age oxygen tanks whereas Lewis and Taylor Boniface were thinking the “cool dude” look will be the way forward.

Archie and Isabelle Woodard were thinking of the more immediate future as they came to school wearing the new Chichester High School PE kit (in September the boys’ and girls’ (Continued on page 10)

schools are merging and will be called Chichester High School – the Y7 children will be wearing a new smart purple uniform.) Some had exciting future accessories e.g.

Thomas Arthur had a watch that could enable you to travel forward and back in time and Amy Peters was thinking cars would not exist and came wearing her space helmet of the future as everyone would be cycling everywhere with matching space glasses – both items acted as transmitters too. Mathilda Linford came to school on a hoverboard. The staff were looking quite robotic – will children be taught by computers in the future and of course no human was out welcoming you to school – will the “Virtual Head” that was present be the way forward?

After break the Y6 taught each class for half an hour – their idea what a futuristic lesson may look like: 





Phillips and Mr Taylor taught a humanities lesson to Y4 and Y5 Towards the end of the day the children looked at what they had agreed should go into our time capsule which included a letter written by each class about life at Boxgrove C.E.P School. The time capsule will be buried in the school grounds The children went home with an anniversary souvenir mug kindly paid for by the PTFA. A keepsake to use/ look back on as the school starts to think forward to the 300th anniversary celebrations in 25 years’ time!!

And Friday was a celebration of what makes us Boxgrove C.E.P. School. It was right that the week ended with a service at Boxgrove Priory. Father Ian organised our special service and The Right Reverend Michael Langrish, Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Chichester, gave the address and Dr Ann Holt OBE, Diocesan Director of Education gave a talk too.

The week ended with a lovely community picnic which gave everyone the chance to look at the learning and pictures of all that had happened during the week.

Some plums, a pig, a rat and a wig “There’s a rat tugging on your plums”! went the maiden’s cry.

“I think I’d be the first to know,” was the gardener’s glib reply.

“He is, look, quick! now! you have to come and see.”

And there he was, clear as day, high in Victoria’s tree.

“Don’t hurt him,” said the maiden, “I think he’s rather cute.”

“Hurt him, I’ll throttle him if he’s stealing all my fruit!”

“Well pardon me,” said Mr Rat, “but aren’t these growing wild, Which means that I can help myself, I learnt that as a child.”

The gardener said, “I’ll count to five, then you’ll be out of here.”

But Mr Rat defied him and got a clip around the ear.

It launched him into a bush nearby, and it was the prickly sort, He picked himself up, grinned and said, “This won’t look good in court!”

And very soon with summonses served, they were at the local assizes, But learning who the judge would be was the first of some nasty surprises.

It was to be ‘Old Greedy Guts’, as they called him in that town, A pig of gigantic proportions, who’d sent many an innocent down.

Justice Peregrine Isaac Gruntforth was the name of this legal pig, To see him in robes was funny enough, and he looked a real twerp in a wig.

His life was all about filling his face, if you’ll excuse me putting it crude, So it made him cross, sat in court as it kept him away from his food.

This case though got him excited, for plums he could not resist, And in front of him was a great pile of them, filling the evidence list.

He ignored the prosecution, of defence he had not a care, Munching the plums had filled his mind, but how, when and where?

“Before I make a judgement” he bellowed, “pray pass exhibit A,” So the clerk produced a juicy plum upon a silver tray.

His snout went into spasm as he scoffed the plum with glee, He gave a cough and said, “um not sure, pray pass exhibit B.” Some of the fruit was older and was beginning to ferment, He started giggling and spitting out stones, because of the boozy content.

Halfway through the alphabet, his tummy began to burn, By the time he had swallowed exhibit P, he quickly did adjourn.

Some say he ate the lot, right up to exhibit Z, And spent more time in the loo that night, than he ever did in his bed.

The very next day he was back, and with the court now in full session, Mr Justice Pig announced, “from this we can all learn a lesson.”

“You Mr Gardner assisted by Rat, I order that you grow more plums,

And would it be so hard my man to share some with your chums?

You too Mr Rat my friend, you seem a likeable chap, So get to know Mr Gardener, and become best of friends perhaps.”

They all left court very thoughtfully, when the judge he did adjourn, As he raced to the first aid station, to treat his severe heartburn!

A year of effort from Mr Gardner and Rat, meant each got a fair share, Though neither could understand why so many trees were bare.

The police were called to the orchard, and soon the trail got hotter, When a very thorough copper saw imprints of big fat trotters.

So that was his game the gutty old judge, acting as if he did care, Whilst secretly scrumping plums by the ton, when no one else was there.

But Gruntforth never stood trial, he never got a hearing, Even though admitting, that all the plums, it was he who was clearing.

He willingly pleaded guilty, but when they called to take him away, His butler said, “I’m afraid you’re too late, he exploded yesterday!”

School Hall Project!

T

he current space used as a community room shares a building with the Y3/4 classroom. It was built in the 1950s from basic materials ie brick, and although robust, it is just not fit for purpose because it has a small capacity. A few years ago a new roof was erected and cavity wall insulation installed as in the winter the building was so cold. Only 10 children with an adult can practically use this space for indoor PE. Because of its size, school assemblies are restricted e.g. there is no space for parents to attend class worship so these are repeated at the end of the day just for them. The same is true of school dinners and as a result children eating hot school dinners and those eating packed lunches have to eat separately. The number of after school clubs that can be run is restricted, especially in the winter months when space inside is at a premium.

Events involving parents such as the nativity or school plays are held away from the school at the Village Hall, Church Hall or in the Priory itself. Although each of these buildings is large enough, the nature of taking children away from the secure school premises presents a raft of different problems including having adequate numbers of appropriate adults who can provide safeguarding.

The school is supported by WSCC in their quest to find the funds for a school hall (but sadly they are not able to fund the build themselves). Solafields (who have created the solar farm in Strettington) have already kindly donated ÂŁ5,000.

Numerous fund-raising events are planned in addition to support being sought from other sources e.g. educational trust funds.

With the school now 275 years old it is hoped that the school building can be expanded to support the education of the 73 children currently on roll and for those who come in the future.

Windmill Hill Revisited July 2016

I

t was a warm, sunny July morning when I pulled up in the lay-by to walk up to the mill. I made my way past the lovely old timber framed home which many years’ ago was where the miller lived.

Now walking up the lane under the tunnel like canopy formed by the overhanging hazelnut bushes with an occasional mature tree in between. I climbed over the stile to walk along beside the donkey paddock, over the next stile alongside the chalk pit and then over the third stile into the open fields.

It was a good morning for butterfly spotters and I saw many species on the grasses and flowers beside the path, including the Marbled White (see picture), Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral, Peacock, Meadow Brown and the

Small Copper.

When I reached the top of the hill I stood for a few minutes thinking back to what it must have been like up here in the Second World War. You can still see the remains of the ‘pill boxes’ which were WW2 searchlight emplacements, a powerful reminder of their importance in the defence of our channel coast. I wondered whether the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots would maybe have dipped the wings of their planes to acknowledge their safe return before landing at Tangmere or Westhampnett.

It’s been good to walk up here again but as I head back home I urge you all to write to your local West Sussex County Council Member, Jeremy Hunt, [jeremy.hunt@westsussex.gov.uk] for action – NOT PROMISES – and a start date for the restoration of our historic, much loved and iconic landmark, Halnaker Windmill.

Frozé—frozen rosé A wonderful recipe as we look back over a great summer and forward to a beautiful autumn...

750ml of rosé wine (chose a strong merlot or pinot noir) 500g of strawberries, halved 50g of caster sugar  

 

Pour the rosé into an ice cube tray or ice cube bag(s) and freeze.

Put strawberries in a heatproof bowl with the sugar and cover with cling film.

Place over a pan of barely simmering water for about 1 hour, until all of the juices have run out of the strawberries. Pass through a fine sieve to extract the juice.

Once the wine has frozen, place it in a food processor with the strawberry juice and blend to a slush.

Divide between wine glasses, garnish with a twist of lemon and enjoy in the sun!

For an ‘up-market’ version you could also add a little vodka and some grenadine and serve in a cocktail glass!

t is with much pleasure that Fr Ian, the Churchwardens and the PCC can announce that the appeal total promised and raised to date is just now marginally over £224,000. The increase is largely due to a promised grant (subject to certain conditions) from SUEZ Communities Trust. Suez is a Trust set up to administer funds raised through the Landfill Tax and which benefits communities within a given radius of a landfill site. The closest landfill to Boxgrove is, of course, Lidsey. The sole purpose of the grant is to pay the major part of the costs of rebuilding the wall and piers in Church Lane. Authorisation for the work to begin will be given when the projected costs are available and the legal paperwork is complete. At the moment of writing the PCC has a shortfall of £3,910. In the context of the whole cost of the 26-metre wall this is about 10%.

Why is the rebuilding so expensive? There are a number of reasons and the new wall being placed round the new house at the end of Church Lane is a prime example of how many courses can be laid at any one time to prevent the wall from collapsing.

Porch. We should be able to start around the end of the year if we can secure a further £10,000. The timescale is determined not only by cashflow but also the number of weddings already booked

in. The work will require the complete re-ordering of the porch and access to the Priory will be by the north door.

Aisle Roofs. This work is more complicated because we have to comply with EU and WTO procurement rules and also the timescale laid down by the DCMS (Department of Culture, Media and Sport). Work will be undertaken in 2017.

Bats. A survey is about be undertaken to see whether bats are resident in the aisle roof. If they are then specific protocols will need to be introduced to ensure they are not disturbed.

We need a further £30,000 to reach the Appeal Target—that is achievable if we all do out bit to help.

Boxgrove W.I. Summer Report.

Members last met for a meeting in July when it was a lovely sunny afternoon. Chris thanked everyone for coming as it was almost too nice to be inside after so many dull days. She reported on her outing with Rose Green W.I. and suggested we should all take advantage of outings or other events offered by other W.I. groups. As with our literary lunch they are good value and offered a wider field of interest than each W.I. can offer their own members. At a reasonable cost she had enjoyed a coach trip to Windsor which included a boat trip, lunch and a strawberry tea and a visit to Savil Gardens. Wendy reminded us that our literary lunch was on Thursday 20th October. She now had tickets for sale and they were available for Boxgrove W.I. members and friends and family as well as other invited W.I.s. The results of the votes on this year’s resolutions were given and both the resolution to make better use of food waste and carers being allowed to spend more time with people with dementia when they were in hospital had been passed at the annual meeting.

The speakers were Peter and Carol Goodman whose talk entitled was entitled ‘From Sheep to Wool’. They took it in turns to talk and demonstrate about what was to them a relatively new hobby. It had taken several months before Carol could spin her wool but she was now able to teach others. They showed us several fleeces

explaining how they have to be thoroughly cleaned before they can be used. They then took us through the many processes that are needed before the wool is ready for using.

By using different coloured fleeces and by leaving the wool it’s natural colours they had wool in many different natural shades. They showed a carding machine, a lazy Kate for making the wool into ply and a ‘niddy noddy’ which was a fascinating modern plastic machine for winding the wool into balls. We could all remember as a child either holding out our arms with the skeins on as an adult wound the wool or turning a chair upside down .

Chris reported that the planned visit to Highdown Gardens had unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the rain but that they would meet in August at the Old Forge in Slindon for a cream tea come rain or shine!

The next meeting on the 14th September includes a talk by Tony Turner, “Stealing China’s Tea”. Members are asked to bring their favourite (usual or unusual) teapot.
