Welcome Welcome to the 2019 Chardstock Street Fayre. This is the 20th year of the Chardstock Street Fayre.

We are delighted to be able to say that since the 1st Street Fayre in 1999 we have given away in excess of £57,000 to many local charities and good causes.

Over the years we have grown in fundraising scale, and have an ever changing committee who work extremely hard to put this event on each year. I wish to thank them all for all their hard work over this year and the previous 19 years. Past and present committee all included.

It is great to see this year that we are working closely with the Chardstock Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club, and I wish them every success on this day. Hoping this will become again a great day for all.

The Street Fayre is a big part of life here in Chardstock bringing the many clubs and associations within and around our community together. It has played a significant role in my life since moving back to Chardstock and I thank everyone for this opportunity.

There are many things to enjoy today, including live music of all varieties in many locations from the Church and Main Stage, to our new ‘Busk Stop’. From vintage tractors and cars, to Garwyn and his amazing reptiles located in the Church. To the fabulous cream teas at Wayside, organised and run by Chardstock Youth Club, to a street full of stalls. Also, we have a great range of food available on the day including our famous ‘Hog Roast and BBQ. I would especially like to thank The Chardstock post office and stores and the George Inn, for their continued support throughout the many owners including our current with supporting Chardstock Street Fayre. I would like to also thank the Church for becoming a huge part of the day and offering a wide variety of things to do, including our world-renowned Paper Plane Competition.

Chardstock Chancers and Prancers 20 Years On....

On a fine afternoon in June 1999 a group of Chardstock villagers sat outside the George Inn and discussed the possibility of a village social event. The result was the Chardstock Street Fayre to be held on 4th September,1999.

One of the many events to be held that day was going to be the Withy Morris dancers. Unfortunately, they were not able to attend. Up-stepped local man, Rob Denslow with the help of his wife Laura as chief choreographer, her mum as costume designer and villagers Tony Culley, Richard Myall, Robin Sarahs, Bob Waldron and Phil Loveridge performed a dance to the tune of ‘Nick, Nack, Paddy Wack’ so saving the day. The antics of the dancers proved to be a great success with £64 being raised by passing the bucket round the appreciative audience. The group did not repeat their success for the 2000 Fayre but by 2001 the Chardstock Chancers were formed under the expert tuition of Faye Loveridge. The eight men performed a stick dance called ‘Postman’s Knock’; encores abounded egged on by the large crowd.

Faye continued to choreograph the dancers in 2002 when The Chancers were joined by eight Ladies known as the Prancers. This time the men performed a hanky dance and the ladies chose sticks. For 2003 the Chardstock Chancers and Prancers (note the name) live music was required ably provided by Jim Goodyear with his accordion. In subsequent years the music has been provided by Eva Schofield and The League of Ukulele gentlemen and other members of our community.This much-loved entertainment provided by village locals of stick and hankie dances has become a traditional highlight of the Fayre and will be seen again during this 20th anniversary event.

Chardstock Youth Club meets every Thursday evening from 7.30-10pm at Chardstock Community Hall.

We have our own room with pool table, air hockey, table tennis & tuck shop, as well as playing football & unihoc. But that’s just the start, woods weekend away- where we make our own shelters and cook everything on a open fire, and our annual week long summer camp to Wales, which includes activities like canoeing and pony trekking. However the most important thing we do is provide somewhere for the village and surrounding area youth to meet up with old & new friends. Chardstock Vintage Tractor & Machinery Club The club is made up of a group of people dedicated to the preservation of old memorabilia i.e. tractors, stationary engines, tools, seats, vintage farm machinery etc.

Our aim is to see them been restored, used and displayed, also there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained from our senior members.

We have throughout the year ploughing matches/competitions, mowing and road runs. All these events are held throughout the year raising money for charity which amounts to annually been about ÂŁ3000. Our main beneficiaries this year are cancer charities and the air ambulance.

This year we are delighted to be able to join forces with the chardstock street fayre and hold a vintage rally alongside. Thus, given the public a wide variety of choice of things to do and see on the day. Thus, helping increase revenue for our chosen charities.

Main Beneficiaries Devon Air Ambulance Devon Air Ambulance is the charity that relieves sickness and injury in and around the county of Devon through the provision of an emergency Air Ambulance Service.

With two coastlines, rugged moorland and many miles of country roads, and with a rich tourist industry which welcomes a significant increase in population during the summer months, the service continues to expand to meet the critical care needs of residents and visitors alike.

In 2018 it cost £7.5 million to keep Devon’s Air Ambulances flying. Proud to be independent of Government and National Lottery funding, it is with thanks to the enthusiastic support of our fundraisers, donors, and supporters that this sum was met. Therefore, we are thrilled that Chardstock Street Fayre have chosen Devon Air Ambulance as one of the beneficiaries of the event.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters of the Charity, in early 2019 the service was extended to 2am, which has helped to ensure the service can attend even more of those in need of urgent medical support in time critical situations. It is the Charity’s aim to become a 24-hour service and with the continued support of communities and businesses across Devon this is a possibility.

Little Acorns Chardstock primary Our nursery welcomes all children and can cater for 2- 5 year olds.

We are a pre-school at the heart of St. Andrew’s Primary Academy and supported by the Acorn MAT, a group of 6 primary academies and 4 pre-schools.Our pre-school is led by a qualified Lead Early Years practitioner supported by a team of highly experienced and trained play leaders. We work very closely with our Reception Class teacher, forming a successful Foundation Stage teaching team. This is unique to the local area and astrength of our provision. Our aim is to give your child the best possible start and a seamless transition to primary education.

Chardstock Community Hall Chardstock Community Hall Trust was set up in 1976 with the overall objective of improving the conditions of life for villagers. And it has achieved that objective to this day, largely due to the many people who have served as volunteer trustees over the last 43 years. Many clubs societies and functions have been held and countless villagers and visitors have enjoyed using the facilities. Today, however, we look at a hall going through a bit of a mid-life crisis. Replacing deteriorating plumbing and electrical systems; installing fire safety measures; maintaining the fabric of the building and updating to conform to new and ever more demanding legislation means that the Hall needs to raise a considerable sum of money. Our income, apart from some small donations, is entirely dependent on hiring out the premises to cover running costs and we look to grants to facilitate improvements. We have a large, functional hall, a Committee Room ideal for small gatherings, a Youth Club Room and a kitchen, and a large car park. The Trustees are most grateful to the Street Fayre Committee for including us as one of their beneficiaries this year and wish them every success with their 20th Street Fayre.
