Clubs should only allow whites on the green When I had my first foray into bowls I was told it was a sport for gentleman, played by both nobility and the elite in days gone by, and my how far we have slid since then.

The sport is on a gradual decline I often hear news of brawling in clubs, infighting between members and court cases, I believe we embarked on this slippery slope when we made the departure from it being a game for gentleman to a game for everyone.

I’m writing to raise my concern for the veritable lack of respect shown towards the longstanding traditions of our noble sport.

When I look across greens now it is a sea of untucked shirts and dishevelled looking club ‘uniforms’ and I yearn for the days we actually wore respectable club attire.

I believe bringing back formal bowling whites will install dignity and honour once more to our sport, while I know my informed opinion may be contentious with younger bowlers it will create change and help us restore the sport to its former glory.

The best in the business will once again go head-to-head for the lion’s share of the $100,000 up for grabs at BPL 08. Bowls fans were captivated by the last instalment of the BPL held across the ditch at Nae Nae in Wellington, New Zealand which saw Club Helensvale take out the $25,000 first place prize.

The next instalment promises to be equally enthralling as the last with the competition heading to one of the top clubs in thecountry. Host of the inaugural BPL competition Club Pine Rivers will welcome the eight franchises once again from November, 13-16.

Nestled in the Brisbane North/Caboolture bowls region the club features state-of-the-art facilities including two magnificently roofed greens with two synthetic greens, allowing for play to continue under all conditions.

BPL07 Winners Club Helensvale in Wellington, NZ

The game format is pairs, with three bowls for each player per end; a team coach also has a substitute player at their disposal, who must be used during the game, but only immediately preceding the delivery of a bowl by their team player.

Every player in the team, including the sub, must bowl at least nine bowls per game.

The team that wins both sets, or one set and then the tie-break, is the winner.

Players have a 30-second shot clock in which they must deliver their bowl from the time the jack is placed at the start of an end or once their opposition bowl has come to a rest.

Teams can nominate one Power Play end per set, enabling teams to earn double the shots scored in that end.

At the end of the double round-robin, the top four teams in the standings play off in the finals series.

Generally, all four matches in the final round of each day are televised on Fox Sports.

Jackaroos outplay their 10-Nations counterparts (July 6-14)

The Welsh 10-Nations event came to a dramatic conclusion with the Australian Jackaroos walked away with a swag of medals including half of the tournament's gold, as National Coach Steve Glasson reports.

Men’s Singles In his semi-final, it was advantage Teys early on against Ireland’s Gary Kelly, when he progressed to a 9-3 lead.

However, the determined Irishman dug deep and not only reduced the deficit but turned it into a handy lead.

At 16-20, hope for a gold medal looked slim for Australia however true to his gritty character, Teysie put his hand up for the challenge and soon thereafter, levelled at 20 all.

It wasn’t to be though, with Kelly getting the bounce and securing a 21-20 classic win.

Men’s Pairs Jesse Noronha and Aaron Wilson had to be considered the underdogs against the South African duo of Wayne Rittmuller and Pierre Breiten back in the men’s pairs, due to the fact the Proteas had already defeated the Jackaroo pairing in the sectional play, albeit by a solitary shot.

All four players contributed to the contest, however Aaron Wilson was the difference with a high level of consistency and some big shots when it really mattered. The final scoreline read Australia defeated South Africa 18-12.

Men’s Triples The men’s triples contingent of Corey Wedlock, Ben Twist and Aaron Teys faced the daunting task of taking on three of Ireland’s favourite sons in Stuart Bennett, Neil Mulholland and Mark Wilson, but the Jackaroos took control early, jumping to a 5-0 advantage in no time.

To Ireland’s credit, they lifted to a new level and whilst all three played extremely well, this game will hold long lasting memories for Ireland’s Captain Mark Wilson, who was nothing short of superb.

Ryan started the better of the two and led early, however Emma soon found a specific three-quarter length, and in-turn her range, and as long as this length was available to her with the advantage of throwing the jack, then the prospect for Ellen prevailing gradually became diminished.

Ryan toiled and was gallant in defeat against an opponent who was simply better on the day, with the final score registered as Malaysia defeated Australia 21-14.

Women’s Pairs The most exciting, edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting, match of the day tension most certainly went to the Women’s Pairs; on paper, a classic between Australia and Malaysia.

Once again, the Aussies owed our Malaysian colleagues an ounce of pay-back, if you like, and early it was looking promising, except for a touch of “X factor” holding us back; that being Malaysian skip Siti Zalina Ahmed.

After some incredible play, the final score was a close 15-14 to Australia (earning that gold!).

The final score posted was Australia 15, Malaysia 14; gold to Australia!

Women’s Triples In the women’s triples final it was a Southern Hemisphere battle with our girls taking on the might from South Africa.

With the green now running exceptionally fast, it was advantage Australia and our trio grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Experienced Proteas skipper Elma Davis kept the South Africans in the contest with some classy draw shots, but at the end of the day, consistency proved too much and Kristina Kristic, Chloe Stewart and Rebecca Van Asch ran out winners 19-9.

Women’s Fours In the Women’s Fours, the epic battles between Malaysia and Australia continued.

The final score was etched in Ireland’s favour, defeating Australia 19-12.

Once again, not much separated these two world class continents, going into the 15th and final end, the score was locked at 10–10.

Men’s Fours

It was however to be Malaysia’s day with a couple of very near misses by the Aussie back-end being the only difference.

The first gold medal decided on the last final day was that of the men’s fours and it was a rematch of an earlier pool encounter between the Jackaroos and Ireland.

Of course, Australia was looking to seek some revenge after Ireland defeated us in the Men’s Triples final but Australia went on to register a hard-earned 14-9 win.

Women’s Singles Young-gun Ellen Ryan had been in sublime form en-route to the gold medal match, but the final was always going to be a new challenge with a green which was throwing its own challenges and yet another quality opponent, this time Emma Firyana Saroji from Malaysia.

“We wanted to ensure as high a rating as possible given the sunny conditions on the Gold Coast,” Furneaux said.

Furneaux, English-born but living in Australia ‘for most of my life’ apart from a time in Christchurch, New Zealand, has never played bowls but has owned Shadex Industries since 2001, using his engineering background to good effect and improving the shade design and longevity.

“It is unbelievable how quickly the job was done,” Gilbert said.

Furneaux was under no misapprehension as he quoted for the $120,000 challenge.

“We were invited to quote on March, 26 but we could not properly access the site until May 4,” Furneaux said.

“We were very aware of what was coming up at Broadbeach and how tight the time frame would be.

“It was the biggest job we have ever undertaken in perimeter shading and a real challenge.”

Pennants and arm bowling With Pennant season well underway, I thought it might be interesting to ask club members for their reaction to arm bowlers competing at the top divisions in Pennants. My experience in this area has been mixed. In the lower divisions, it is not uncommon for arm bowlers to be strongly represented and most teams accept that these club bowlers are perfectly entitled to play Pennants. There are some non-arm bowlers who still refer openly to opposition team players as having the “cheating stick”!

As covered previously in many articles, this view is borne out of ignorance and a convenient memory loss that the great majority of arm bowlers were competent or even highly skilled players prior to adopting the arm. The other main category is players who need the arm due to medically diagnosed physical conditions and who have every right to continue playing and represent their club in Pennants.

When the Australian Team were in training for the recent World Championships in NZ, I was fortunate to meet and observe them at Pine Rivers Club in Brisbane. I asked

several team members, both male and female, if they could envisage competing at this level against an arm bowler. They unanimously agreed that subject to the accepted selection process, they would happily compete against an arm bowler at national and international level.

I am not too sure what the exact ruling is from Bowls Australia, but I took great comfort from these top international players respecting the right of an arm bowler being given the opportunity to compete at the highest level. That said, I believe many clubs would not support this and exclude arm bowlers from their Division 1 and 2 Pennant teams, to avoid any suggestion from opposition teams of having arm bowlers with their “cheating sticks” give them an unfair advantage!

It would be great to hear from arm bowlers who currently represent their club, district or higher using a bowling arm.

Are they experienced bowlers transitioning through age or injury to an arm? Has the arm actually improved their game or would they be selected with or without an arm?

Hopefully we'll also hear from fair-minded bowlers happy to compete against arm bowlers in competitions at all levels?

STRETCHING Are you stretching before games?

While bowls may be a low impact sport, players can still benefit greatly from stretching before a roll up.

Professor Tony Blazevich from Edith Cowan University’s School of Medical and Health Sciences in Western Australia says while stretching may not benefit the physical performance of elite athletes while playing, it will help reduce the possibility of injury.

“The implementation of a stretching program will improve hip, knee and ankle mobility that helps provide a range of motion in players, which will allow them to move into the bowling position with more balance,” Professor Blazevich said.

“When flexibility is a problem, many bowlers tend to tilt their body a little to one side, reducing balance during the release phase.

“Doing some stretching in the period before play perhaps just before the warm-up will acutely improve flexibility.

“In a low intensity game like lawn bowls, I’d expect five to 10 minutes of muscle stretching before play as well as in separate sessions outside of play to be of benefit to most players, both in the game and outside of it.”

Professor Blazevich says his study of 20 athletes compared their running speed, agility and vertical jump height following a comprehensive warm-up that included different types of muscle stretching and they found that while the research indicated there were no performance benefits, athletes reported that they felt more prepared and confident after the warm-up.

“The perception of freedom of movement and this psychological effect can’t be understated,” he said.

“So flexibility is very important as well as being useful in daily life too!

“For this reason, static stretching may be a good idea before sports participation.

“As far as stretching before bowls, I think it can also be useful as we age because we become stiffer due to the way our connective tissues change.

“And our results show that dynamic stretching can also be incorporated into a warm up without compromising their performance on the field, but it also doesn’t improve it in the way many thought.”

Blayney and Newstead amalgamation to go ahead Board members of both the Blayney Bowling Club and Newstead Bowling Club say the planned amalgamation of the two clubs will still happen.

There were rumours the Blayney club pulled out of the deal which were picked up by the Blayney Chronicle with one version insisting that the Blayney club owes the Newstead club $150,000, and that the Newstead club wants it back.

“That’s totally wrong,” the chairman of the Newstead Bowling Club, Gary Norton, told the Blayney Chronicle.

The treasurer of Blayney Bowling Club, Dane Hamilton, confirmed Norton’s statement.

“It’s certainly still going ahead,” Mr Hamilton said.

“It is taking longer than expected and I suspect that some people just think it’s not happening at all, and that’s when the Chinese whispers start.”

The main rumour circulating had been around Newstead’s future plans.

“I’ve heard that once the amalgamation occurs Newstead will sell the site, and that just quite simply cannot happen because under the Club’s Act there are protections that are put in place,” Norton told the Chronicle.

“We’re actually going to be working on a plan for some redecorating, some refurbishments and simply move towards getting the premises into a more up-to-date fashion.”

Hamilton was positive about the future.

“When it comes to the club game many of these rumours come from people who have no association with either of the clubs and they will throw rumours around trying to undermine and upset the process,” he said.

“I’ve heard all sorts of rumours and innuendo, some could be described as libel.”

“There are some people who undoubtedly think that it shouldn’t go ahead and think that Blayney should go it alone, but the reality of that is that the Blayney club isn’t in a position to stand alone.” ​While the amalgamation is still on track, the name of the new combined club is yet to be decided.

Warilla High School emerged as winners of the 2018 NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) Bowls Triples Championships finals held at Glenbrook Panthers Bowling Club from June, 13-14.

This year’s win puts Warilla into the history books as the only school to have won five consecutive state triples championships.

Hunter River High were runners-up for the second year in a row with a young side of Raymond Terrace bowlers.

Elderslie High, in South West Sydney, finished third after defeating Kempsey High.

Host club Glenbrook Panthers said it was proud of its members’ efforts, which were split between three different schools.

Glenbrook is a current “hot spot” for junior bowls development in NSW, the club has six players who have represented Zone 5 under 18s which extends from Blacktown to well past Goulburn.

The club also provides an extensive and inclusive training program to cater for new and emerging bowlers through to elite levels.

SUPER LEAGUE After much anticipation, the Bowls SA Super League has started. The league promises to be a state-wide, dynamic, fast paced format of the game, which clearly defines the journey from local club to state and national pathways.

Bowls SA say the competition will help fill a void at the state-wide elite competition level and will assist in elite pathway selection, as well as providing quality competition to challenge players and help improve their performance.

Some of the concepts of the competition include:

The competition will be unlike any other event on the Bowls SA calendar, with eight newly established state wide teams formed, and each affiliated bowling club in South Australia being aligned with one of these teams to act as feeder clubs.

• Teams consist of 12 players per squad

This serves the purpose of assisting country clubs or metropolitan clubs without a high-grade pennant side to retain their best available talent, as the individual players can play in the best competition in the state, whilst being based out of their home club.

Bowls SA believes the league will be a much more attractive proposition for potential advertisers while at the same time acting as a great promotion for the sport itself.

"The competition has players from all over the state and we hope that it will attract spectators from all different corners of South Australia too,” Bowls SA operations manager Erin Haines said.

“The game day experience will provide a fantastic opportunity to get up close to the action from your local teams, paired with a great atmosphere, food and beverages.”

Dave and Jo Edwards had a fantastic time with fellow bowlers in the Cook Islands recently.

Dave wrote a diary during his stay which made us want to go after reading it, so we thought we’d publish it and encourage you to consider going to the beautiful Cook Islands!

We awoke to the soothing sounds of island life after our relaxing siesta in one of Edgewater Resort’s spacious rooms which looked straight out onto a lush garden area littered with variety of beautiful tropical flora, I’m not sure we could have asked for a better start to our first day on the island!

Following a delicious breakfast, we had an informative and comical orientation with our incredibly knowledgeable guide Tiki, who helped get us clued up on the scenic little island we would be calling home for the next eight days.

After our chat with tiki, we all enjoyed the chance to relax and decompress and spent 22 BOWLS PLUS AUG/SEP 2018

most of the day soaking up the island vibes and engaging in some peaceful down time, at least until happy hour started.

The drinks were soon flowing and we had a chance to chat and enjoy some light-hearted conversation and levity, besides the plentiful supply of alcohol we also got a chance to sample the delicious local delicacies and with the generous portion sizes our bellies were lined to the brim.

It was a very cultural evening too with lots of native dancing, singing and melodic drums which resonated through the night’s cool sea breeze. It was an awesome experience and one I’ll never forget, those guys and girls sure

know how to move and although my two left feet were somewhat lacking in the rhythm department, I sure did have fun.

Despite the fact a number of us were feeling a little bit precious after our first evening in Rarotonga, we were able to muster the courage to get up the morning after for our morning bus tour of the island with our driver George. George knows everything there is to know about the island and its surrounds.

We all learnt interesting facts about the island and its history and we had chances to stop off along the tour to take a look a different notable sites and historical points including the noni juice factory.

The juice is made from the noni fruit or Morinda Citrifolia to give it its ‘proper’ name.

According to the people of Rarotonga the herbal tonic can cure any ailment, this came in handy for me as I was still in the midst of battling the after effects of the frivolity we’d had the night before.

By the afternoon, thanks to the noni, we were in fighting fitness once again as we headed to the local bowlo for our first taste of bowling on the island in a social roll-up our fabulous tour organiser had planned with the locals.

The greens were a little bit different to what we would usually play on in New Zealand and Australia, but we soon learnt the pace of them and enjoyed quality games of bowls.

The friendliness of the locals shone through once again with everyone cracking jokes, partaking in good hearted competition and experiencing bowls at its best.

The following day we took a trip to visit a local school; this gave us all an opportunity to learn about the culture which is passed down from generation to generation.

It truly is a noble culture and after our visit we were all well aware it will never die.

Our visit to the school afforded us the chance to learn how to make our own headwear from flowers and the boys showed us all how to extract the delectable raw coconut from its shell while we listened to more native music and drums.

The children were never without a smile on their faces and the respect they showed for the teachers and our group was lovely to see.

As the afternoon rolled around, it became serious competition mode and we headed to the bowls club and set ourselves into teams of four, mixed up with the locals and much fun was had.

Some bowls went close and some didn’t but it didn’t really matter as the laughs across the green were well heard.

We finished with a few bevvies and more laughter.

It was then time for the famous lagoon cruise which the whole group had been excited for.

Wow, what a great day.

We headed out to the lagoon were able to dip into the water with goggles and a snorkel.

The water was warm and crystal blue, I had a smile on my face the whole time as we snorkelled over the coral and marvelled at the plethora of tropical fish. It truly is a paradise on earth.

After our chance to swim we ventured off to a little island to have lunch before a chance for another swim.

We were treated to some more entertainment which was put on just for us including a coconut tree climbing show with the world’s fastest climber, a sarong tying exhibition and plenty of heavenly music to soundtrack it all.

On our fifth day in Rarotonga we had a chance to visit the local markets, there were so many beautiful locally handcrafted items on display.

The dinner was simply amazing with a lot of local food and once again, we ate far too much but couldn’t help ourselves.

We were greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours and smells from the freshly prepared food stalls, which I think we all overindulged in but we were on holiday!

We all had such a great time and were all a bit sad when the bus came to pick us up.

A few went off on a 4x4 excursion around the island, while others laid by the beach and soaked up the sun.

The next day was a church visit, I’m not going to lie I was a bit sceptical about the church visit at first, although we had heard a lot about the singing.

With so many things to do on Raro we were spoiled for choice, in the end we decided to hire a car and do some more exploring of our own.

Whilst neither me or Jo are religious, we absolutely loved our visit.

We did a small coaching session at the club then took off to Muri beach, where I was finally able to tick off one of my bucket list items.

I think everyone came away with at least one item from the markets, ours is hanging on the wall as a constant reminder of a what a great place Raro is and the fun we had visiting it.

Following our excursion to the markets we popped down to the bowlo for our final afternoon of play.

The atmosphere again was one of happiness and laughter.

Another three games were played in such a lovely spirit and the winners were found.

We were then back to the resort for a couple of hours to get into our island attire before returning to the club.

The welcome we received for our final night there was unbelievable, they had dancers, drummers and lots of smiles.

They are all so passionate and it showed in their singing, it was lovely to see both the young and old sing side by side.

You could tell it meant so much to them all.

I would recommend the experience to anyone visiting Rarotonga, it’s one that will stay with you for a long time.

After the church service we had some free time, most of us took the opportunity to head down to the pool or beach for a bit of relaxation and a cocktail or two.

On our final day with no activities planned,

people decided to spend the day how they wished.

I hired a stand up paddle board and paddled off for an hour, the water is so blue and clear I could view the tropical fish darting around underneath in full clarity which was an excellent way to end the holiday.

While this was our first trip to Rarotonga, I am confident in saying it won’t be our last.

The people are so unbelievably happy, the weather was beautiful and the island is lovely.

Rarotonga, we will be back!

at Playford’s next great sports facility More than 200 people attended the reopening of the $7m Playford facility with members of the merged Elizabeth and Munno Para bowling clubs celebrating a new beginning.

The Playford Bowling Club features the largest undercover bowling facility in the Southern Hemisphere.

Mayor Glenn Docherty said the facility is part of Council’s strategic priority to promote healthy and active lifestyles.

“This development has also supported the creation of jobs and future-proofing the role of sport in our region,” Mayor Docherty said.

“As the City of Playford continues to grow at such a rapid pace, it is wonderful that our growing sporting facilities make Playford a fantastic place to live, work and play.”

The facility includes 4174m2 playing surface which includes the three 21 rink greens covered by the mammoth shade cover, as well as a hospitality-standard kitchen and a function space for hire.

Australian lawn bowls coach Steve Glasson showered praise on the newly finished facility.

“When coming here, you have expectations and visions in your head as to how the facility’s going to look and I’ve got to say it totally exceeded those expectations,” Glasson said.

“It is world class and I’ve had the great privilege of travelling all around the world, from the bottom of Tasmania to the north of England and Scotland and many places in between…again, I congratulate you all.”

Ferguson and Scott named nation’s number one bowlers for 2017/18 NSW duo David Ferguson (Engadine) and Natasha Scott (Raymond Terrace) secured Australia’s number one male and female bowler titles respectively at the conclusion of the 2017/18 rankings period.

Scott, who won the Female Bowler of the Year titles in 2012, ‘15 and ‘16, secured the bulk of her rankings points through a grand-slam of NSW State titles, in the singles, pairs, triples and fours, which collected 198 out of her 343 total points.

Ferguson amassed 543 points during the period, 39 points more than any player in the history of the national Player Ranking System and 135 points more than any previous male winner.

His biggest achievements during the timeframe include victories at the Australian Indoor Championships men’s event, NSW State Champion of Champion Singles, the Ballina Summerland Singles and Pairs, The Hills Twilight Pairs and the Engadine Broughton Triples.

Peterborough ‘Loco’ Honour Roll Prior to the Great War, Peterborough was one of the busiest single-track railways in the world. The locomotive depot worked around the clock, with men employed in all aspects of the rail industry – everyone from drivers and engineers to clerks and cleaners. When war broke out, well over 100 men enlisted from the depot, including the three Hass brothers whose names appear on the depot’s honour roll.

The unusual scroll-shaped honour roll hangs in the diesel shed at the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre in Peterborough. Meticulously hand painted, it is thought to be the work of railway painters at the Islington workshop, who had decorated the similarly designed Cockburn Honour Roll. The original location of the honour roll is believed to have been the barracks, but with the decline of the depot in the 1970s it was placed in the town hall until its removal to the present site in the 1990s.

Australian Open More than 2,000 bowlers descended on the Gold Coast for the world’s most lucrative open bowls event. The $250,000 Australian Open showcased 13 clubs across the region, from Coolangatta in the south to Paradise Point in the north, over the 14 days of competition from June 9 to 22, as bowlers from across the globe contested the sport’s richest open titles.

The return of annual competition to the GC boasts added impetus this year, marking the first time a Commonwealth Games improved venue staged a major national competition.

Broadbeach Bowls Club, which received a $4 million development for the Games courtesy of the Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast, was once again the primary venue for the Open and featured the final two days of action, inclusive of a live SBS and Fox Sports broadcast of four finals across the penultimate and final days.

The completely open-to-enter event featured a randomised draw with no seedings in either sectional or knockout play, paving the way for club-level bowlers to play against the best in the world.

On the greens, competition was hotly contested across the disciplines this year with a decorated field, many of whom were fresh off Commonwealth Games heroics at the event’s centrepiece venue, Broadbeach Bowls Club.

There were a number of standout performances at this year’s Australian Open, one of the highlights of the Open took place in the Women’s singles competition which came to a thrilling conclusion.

Fine form for Van Asch Among those who went through to the Round of 128 Women’s Singles knockouts were dual-Commonwealth Games gold medallists Natasha Scott and Rebecca van Asch, as well as 2017 Under-18 champion Jessica Srisamruaybai and past Triples winner Samantha Shannahan.

The blue-ribbon women’s singles competition was then whittled down to just 32 competitors, and after a further three sessions of action the names of the semi-finalists had been decided.

Among the names to book a berth were Rebecca van Asch, Ellen Ryan, Kristina Krstic and Broadbeach local Bolivia Millerick.

The final saw Van Asch given her first Australian Open singles crown following a nail-biting 21-19 victory over Krstic in the decider.

Giant slayers Also victorious on the SBS and Fox Sports TV rink was the pairing of Chris Herden and Carl Healey, whose giant-killing run continued with a comprehensive 21-10 victory over Harley McDonald and Aaron Teys in an all New South Wales final affair.

En-route to the final, the Herden/Healey combination secured the scalps of Pearse/ Henry, Queenslanders Jayden Christie and Aron Sherriff and Jamie Anderson and Ryan Bester in the knockout stages, further rubberstamping their credentials as Men’s Pairs champions.

In the Women’s Pairs competition, the mother-daughter combination of Gayle and Brooke Edwards secured one of the most dramatic wins of the tournament.

Gayle produced an incredible shot in the last end of the final to flip the match on its head and secure the Women’s Pairs crown for the Altona-based pair.

“It was fantastic, Brooke played brilliantly all day, she led well all day,” Gayle Edwards said.

“I tried to play well to back her up and we’ve got over the line by one shot, it was a hard game and a hard pace but we got there.”

All-star final The Men’s Fours final game proved to be one of crowd favourites with two all-star teams going head-to-head, last year’s fours champs Ryan Burnett and Scottish superstar Alex Marshall returned to Broadbeach with the help of Helensvale’s Nathan Rice and Irish heavyweight Jeremy Henry.

Meeting them in the final was another powerhouse team consisting of Helensvale young gun Jayden Christie, Comm Games gold medallist Josh Thornton, Victorian legend Barrie Lester and the formidable Aron Sherriff.

Neither team could open up a serious lead and by end 15 the teams were separated by just one shot with Marshall’s team leading 1110 and holding two.

The crowd held their breath as Sherriff played his last bowl which just missed its mark allowing Marshall and Burnett to pick up their second fours title in as many years with a 1310 victory.

“To win another Aussie Open Fours it’s absolutely fantastic and the guys have been fabulous to play with for the last week,” Marshall said.

Consistency is key The Women’s Fours proved to be equally thrilling with Ling Qu, Leeane Poulson, Diane Strawbridge and Kawana’s Marilyn Emerton taking on Carmen Anderson’s team of Brittany Wiley (Binjour), Ann Maree Peart (Tweed Heads) and Sarah Boddington.

Emerton’s team were in sensational form in the final and concluded their campaign with a comfortable victory over the might of Norfolk Island representative Anderson and her starstudded side, 17-9.

Poulson, Qu and Strawbridge undoubtedly proved the difference in the match-up, consistently outperforming their counterparts in the early stages, though the vast experience of Emerton proved vital as her side weathered a storm, with Anderson and Co clawing back the scores within two shots with four ends to play.

However, consistency won out on the night, with Emerton’s side scoring a four on the

penultimate end to force Anderson’s quartet to chase a full count – though to no avail, as Anderson conceded acknowledging the task was a tall order against a four who had proven superior all evening – gifting Emerton and her team the $10,000 winner’s cheque.

“It doesn’t get much better than that, this really is a dream come true,” Emerton said.

“All I wanted to do was take away any of the danger, Carmen can play awesome shots and if you leave something uncovered she’s going to take advantage so we just needed to get a couple in the head and then cover everything.”

Comm Games hero claims another victory Burleigh Heads bowler and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Jake Fehlberg, took on fellow Queenslander John Vance (Tamborine Mountain) in the final, Fehlberg pulled off a classy finish to his campaign and spared no prisoners defeating Vance 21-4 to pick up his second Australian Open Vision-Impaired singles title in style.

The singles title chalked up Fehlberg’s collection of Australian Open titles to four, following his back-to-back wins of the 2016 and 2017 Vision-Impaired Pairs title and his win of the 2017 Vision-Impaired Singles title.

“It felt really good to win again and defend my title, I think I played well throughout the competition despite a scare in the sectional rounds following my loss to Tin Can Bay’s Bill O’Rourke,” Fehlberg said.

“I think winning the Comm Games gold medal has really given me confidence in my game to know that I can pull off the shots when I need to and know that the game is never truly over.

“I was really pleased with my performance in the Open singles too as I won my section and made it into the first stage of the knockout rounds.

“I’d like to thank my coach Ron Alexander, my dad and director Grant Fehlberg and my sponsor Aero for helping me get to where I am.”

Irate at the rates After more than 149 years of bowling Sydney’s oldest lawn bowls club in inner city Balmain says it has serious concerns about the cripplingly high rates and ongoing maintenance costs the club now faces.

Balmain Bowling Club which first opened in 1880, owns its own property in the middle of a former industrial area where land prices have now reached exorbitant levels.

Due to the zoning of the club it may be forced to pay $65,000 in rates this financial year to Sydney’s Inner West Council. Balmain say this is vastly different to the $14,500 paid by Gladstone Park Bowling Club which is situated just 600 metres down the road.

Balmain is fighting for its life despite its important place in history, although it increased its membership by more than 305 per cent to the club in just 18 months, maintenance, electricity costs and overheads continue to rise.

“Our land which we own is extraordinarily valuable and we’re trying to raise some capital to ensure we continue into the future and make our 150-year milestone and beyond,” Balmain board member Paul Cooper told the ABC. “We have to fight to find a solution to ensure it and other clubs like ours remain viable into the 34 BOWLS PLUS AUG/SEP 2018

future. [Labor politician] Tom Uren, the most famous son of Balmain — his wake was held at Balmain Bowling Club.

“That sort of history cannot be thrown out the back door.”

Club president Ross Craig remains extremely positive about the club’s future and says Darcy Byrne, the mayor of the Inner West Council, has been supportive of the club and both parties are exploring different options to ensure the club can continue to operate.

“Despite the high rates, the future looks bright and with the increase in membership and the support from our barefoot bowling customers the club will continue to support the Balmain community for many years to come,” Craig said.

Balmain is trying not to be part of a worrying trend in Sydney which has around 100 clubs in the area, as 89 bowling clubs have disappeared within the last 10 years in NSW, with others also following suit elsewhere around the country despite record participation levels.

BA updates the Artificial Devices Policy Bowls Australia’s Board has approved an important amendment to the sport’s Artificial Devices Policy, specifically relating to the use of a Bowlers Arm device.

The critical change to the Policy is in section 5.1.8, which now stipulates: Whenever a player commences using a bowlers arm in a game, the player must use it for the remainder of that game. This does not apply to the rolling of the jack, which can be rolled either by hand or by a bowlers arm.

The change now allows the rolling of the jack to occur either by hand or bowlers arm, rather than, as was previously mandated, that the jack had to be rolled using the bowlers arm.

The revised Policy came into effect on July 16, 2018.

The philosophy of Bowls Australia is to allow access to the sport to as many participants as possible and ensure an inclusive atmosphere from club to elite level.

Kurri Kurri Women’s Bowling Club celebrates

90 birthday th

Bowlers from around the Hunter River District partook in the celebrations for Kurri Kurri Women’s Bowling Club’s 90th birthday.

The club, which was founded in 1928 is the oldest women’s bowling club in the district and has enjoyed a number of successes over the years.

They won the district grade four pennant in 2003, grade three in 2005, grade two in 2006, grade one in 2007, 2008, 2014, 2015 and 2016, and were runners-up in the state fours in 2007.

Honorary secretary Carolyn Glen sourced the club’s history for the event and said the women’s club was originally formed by wives and friends of bowlers from the men’s bowling club.

Judith Wheatley and Carolyn Glen were selected to represent NSW in the open side in 2008.

“The wives and friends had been called on to cater for afternoon teas, etc., and enjoyed it but became a little envious of the men having so much fun playing bowls while they worked, so they decided to form a club of their own,” she told the Cessnock Advertiser.

“Many and varied are the stories told – the one spoken of most is that they travelled to Newcastle by train leaving home at 7am and not returning until about 7.45pm – happy to do that to enjoy their bowls.”

In 1964, the club moved across the road to the new men’s club –the George Oakes Memorial Gates still remain on the original site of the women’s club where a preschool and two houses now stand.

From 1983 the numbers fell and the club was unable to conduct club championships or enter district games.

But in 2001, the revival of the club saw many new members join, and since then, the Kurri Kurri women have been a force to reckoned with.

Glen has continued to play in the state senior side, racking up 52 tests for NSW to date.

In 2015 Gail Sheehan was selected to represent NSW in the state senior side, and both Sheehan and Glen are currently in the state team – a great achievement for a small club of about 40 members.

Glen said the club has a vast band of volunteers who continue to add to its success, along with the competitive players and executive committee.

“Without these ladies we would not have had the success we have had,” she said.

“These ladies are the ones who turn up time and time again.”

Glen said the ladies’ club is looking forward to a successful future.

“We have a number of very keen and competitive ladies and hope to have a recruitment day later in the year with a view to attracting new members,” she said.
