• 2002 STATE INTER-ZONE SIDES CHAMPIONSHIPS

JO H N A RC H E R Riverina city of Wagga Wagga played host to the 9th Inter-Zone Sides Championships with all 16 zones being represented by some 256 of the State’s best bowlers.

T

he

First held in 1994 with just four sides, the championships have over the years expanded to include all 16 zones, culminating in one of the cal­ endar’s most prestigious tourna­ ments.

This year, it was Zone 8 DBA’s turn to be the hosts with sectional play being held at the Rules BC, City Leagues BC, RSL BC and the South Wagga BC. The semi-finals and final were set down for Sunday at the Rules BC. Although having been beaten by Zone 10 in the semi-finals in 2001, Zone 12 was still regarded by many as the favourites to take out the competition.

With Rex Johnston, Steve Glasson, Steve Anderson and Scott Caundle as skippers, they were con­ sidered a formidable opposition.

Zone 12 looked certain to qualify for the semi-finals with wins over Zone 6 and Zone 9, but struck strong opposition in Zone 14. Zone 14 with only one win under their belt had nothing to lose.

Zone 14 put on a powerhouse display of bowls, and they were well aware that a win over Zone 12 would have put both zones on four points with the overall result being determined by the higher margin.

It became a closely fought con­ test, which was interrupted briefly by heavy rain. In the end, before a crowd of enthusiastic supporters.

Zone 14 went on to defeat Zone 12 by 80 to 60.

As both Zone 12 and 14 finished with two wins each, it came down to the side with the higher margin

(shots up) to determine the section winner. As Zone 12 was on four points plus 46, and Zone 14 on four points plus 21, Zone 12 was declared to have won the section.

Zones 8, 10 and 16 all reached the semi-finals with three straight wins over their respective oppo­ nents. Zone 8 beat Zones 1 1 ,7 and 3, while Zone 10 accounted for Zones 5, 2 (narrowly, by one shot), and Zone 15. Zone 16 made it through defeating Zones 13, 1 and 4.

A bright sunny Sunday saw defending champions Zone 10 (Northern Line/Parramatta) take on Zone 16 (Illawarra) in one semi­ final, while Zone 8 (Riverina) went up against Zone 12 (Sydenham Bankstown/Southern Metropolitan).

The semi-final between Zones 10 and 16 saw Zone 10 trying to play catch-up for most of the game. In the end. Zone 16 went on to win comfortably defeating Zone 10 by 85 shots to 59.

Individual rink scores were (Zone 16 first): L. Selby 25 d C. Curtis 11, T. Ellem 27 d P. Woods 14, T. Sommerville 22 d P. Stockham 12,

and S. Garvey 11 went down to K. Walsh 22.

In the other semi-final. Zone 12 easily accounted for Zone 8 with a convincing win of 101 to 63. While Zone 8 played well, they were never really a threat to Zone 12.

Individual rinks (Zone 12 first): R. Johnston 23 d R. Maguire 13, S. Glasson 33 d B. Lack 11, S. Anderson 22 d L. Vincent 19, and S. Caundle 23 d P. Jones 20.

The final turned into a tense City versus Country match with Zone 12 taking on Zone 16. Zone 12 was still considered by many to be the favourites, but others were quietly confident that Zone 16 had the fire­ power and more than an even chance of scoring a victory.

In a breathtaking close final, which could have gone either way, and which kept the large crowd of spectators totally enthralled, Zone 12 ran out the eventual winners by a three shot margin, 77 to 74.

With only two of the four rinks getting up, it was a close shave for Zone 12.

Perhaps the biggest shock of the game for Zone 12 supporters came -

when Steve Glasson on the 9th end dropped six shots to Shane Garvey.

However, this turned out to be more than offset by Scott Caundle, who went on to pick up two 5 ’s in his match.

Individual rink scores (Zone 12 first): S. Anderson 18 d T. Ellem 14, S. Caundle 25 d T. Sommerville 17, R. Johnston 17 beaten by L. Selby 21, and S. Glasson 17 lost to S. Garvey 22.

The win by Zone 12 was its fourth since entering the competi­ tion in 1997, and it is the fourth time in the competition Zone 16 has finished runner-up.

At the presentation. State President Terry Murphy congratulat­ ed both sides on the spirit in which the final had been played.

He thanked Zone 8 President, Vince Beard, for the magnificent way in which his zone had staged the tournament, and also thanked all officials and spectators for their marvellous support throughout the event.

Terry presented the runners-up and winners badges to the individual players, and presented the winner’s trophy to Zone 12.

In response. Zone 12 President, John Archer, thanked Zone 8 and all those involved in the conducting of the championship, and congrat­ ulated his side on their excellent win.

JO H N A RC H E R N brilliant weather at Greenlees Park BC, Rex Skulthorpe (Lightning Ridge) exacted a decisive win over Scott Kicks (Warilla), 31 to 17, to take out the 2002 Hahn Premium Light State Pres­ ident’s Reserve Singles.

Rex gained an early lead of 6-nil on the first three ends, giving him­ self a huge confidence boost. Scott fought back strongly with some magnificent bowling, but he failed to cut back Rex’s early lead.

It was not long before Rex found himself leading 21 to 10 and look­ ing every bit the champion. Scott never gave up and tried his best to get on top with some excellent bowling.

When Rex got caught on 27 for three ends, it allowed Scott to reach 17 and gave him some hope of clos­ ing the gap. However, Rex playing exceptional bowls secured a 4 on the next end, to give him the match and the championship.

A jubilant Rex admitted that this is the first time he has entered in the reserve singles and it is his first per­ sonal tournament win.

The win comes on top of his skip­ pering a team in the victorious Lightning Ridge No.6 Pennant Side that took out the State Flag this year.

Previously one of the magnificent aboriginal bowlers from Goodooga, Rex is now enjoying playing for Lightning Ridge.

Coincidentally, Rex reached the final with an identical win of 31-17 in the semi-finals against Steven Pooley, from Mallacoota. Rex made a great start in that game, with a 5nil lead on two ends.

leading 17-4. Steven was persistent in attempting to close the gap, but the way Rex was playing; he was unable to make much impression.

Scott Kicks advanced to the finals by beating Christopher Habgood, from Dorrigo, in the semi-finals, 3122. This was a fairly evenly matched game, with the lead alternating between each player.

On the nineteenth end, the score was locked up on 17-all, when Scott scored a three to take the lead, from which he never looked back.

State President’s Reserve Pairs A very excited team of Jim Carroll and Gary Brooks, from the Riverina A.F. Rules Club Wagga Wagga, took out the State President’s Reserve Pairs Championship with a convincing win of 24-13 over Mark Larsen and John Waine, from Oak Flats.

Carroll and Brooks came straight out of the starting blocks scoring a five on the first end. This immedi­ ately put Larsen and Waine on the back foot, having to play catch-up.

On the 11th end, Carroll and Brooks were leading 12-5, then on the next end they picked up anoth­ er five to give them a 17-5 lead.

This was immediately followed by a further two on the next end, to vir­

tually put the game out of their opponents’ reach.

The 16th end resulted in Larsen and Waine scoring a four to take them to 12 against Carroll and Brooks, who were on 20. However, time and ends were running out, and Carroll and Brooks went on to take out the championship 24-13.

Jim Carroll, who is the president of his club, and Gary Brooks were thrown together for this champi­ onship by accident. Both originally had other partners, but when they were ruled ineligible to play in the reserve pairs as a result of winning the major fours, Jim and Gary teamed up together. The rest, as they say, is history.

To reach the finals, Jim and Gary had a narrow win in their semi-final over Les Parm enter and Peter Wonnocott (Swansea Workers) 1916. Down 12-2 on seven ends, they gradually clawed their way back, when a five on the 15th end put them ahead 16-13.

From that point on, they never looked back, eventually mnning out winners.

In their semi-final, Mark Larsen and John Waine had a comfortable win over Bruce Turton and Allan Dodd (Camden RSL) of 27 to 12.

On the third end, Mark and John scored a six to lead 7-1.

Bruce and Allan were never to make up the difference, and Mark and John coasted to a win.

This year, both the Reserve Singles and Reserve Pairs Championships were conducted at Greenlees Park BC at Concord.

Tom Giles, Vice President of the RNSWBA, who made the presenta­ tions to the winners and mnners-up in both championships, thanked all the players for the spirit in which the games were played.

Tom then thanked Dick Arnold, president of Greenlees Park, for hosting the events and the magnifi­ cent way his club looked after the players and supporters.

Bowls Australia Inc., has appointed Mark Rendell as first chief executive.

Rendell, 35, was appointed fol­ lowing a thorough selection process conducted by recruitment agency Sports Employment Australia.

He will take-up the position on October 19 when the new unified national organisation for m en’s and women’s lawn bowls com­ mences operation.

With tertiary qualifications in sports m anagem ent, Rendell brings 10 years experience in sports administration to the posi­ tion.

He was previously national exec­ utive director of the national body for m en’s lawn bowls in Australia.

“We were very impressed with the quality of the 90 applications we received for the position,” said Women’s Bowls Australia presi­ dent, Beryl Brennan.

“Overall, it was an exhaustive process with some 20 applicants interviewed. Apart from those who 6 BOWLS ALIVE - OCTOBER 2 0 0 2

applied for the position, the recruitment agency also actively pursued potential candidates from within the sports industry. its “Mark Rendell was the stand-out of those applicants, due to both his skills as a sports administrator and his experience in leading a nation­ al sporting organisation.”

The president of Bowls Australia, Trevor Roach, said he was confident in the direction the new national bowls body was head­ ing.

“The merger of the m en’s and w om en’s national organisations presents a new set of challenges for the sport’s administrative head­ quarters,” he said.

“As a unified body, the sport has the right structure in place now and is in a much stronger position to deliver programs that will enhance bowls at both the grass­ roots and elite levels.

“We are confident that Mark Rendell is the right person to lead us through the challenges that lie ahead, and take Bowls Australia Inc. and the sport forward as it enters an exciting new era.”

South Tamworth It was great to see President Col Graham looking so fit and healthy after his recent illness, and it was a terrific President’s Day the club put on in his honour.

Visitors from far and wide, plus club members, were all impressed with the new décor and alterations to South Tamworth.

P olice C ham pionships Once m ore, the NSW Police Championships were hosted by St Johns Park BC, and as usual the bowls were of a very high standard.

The barbecue night attended by about 150 people was a first class event enjoyed by all.

Tasmania Our Tasmanian visitors here to com pete for the twice yearly Peet/Kay test series against the Royal was again a very successful tournament.

All of the venues we played at were first class in entertaining our guests, and supplied beautiful greens for the series.

Thank you to Mt Lewis, Riverview, Greenlees Park and Parramatta RSL.

Z ones S id es Cham pionship Down to Wagga Wagga for this year’s series, and what a series it turned out to be! Plenty of great results for some of our smaller zones. Each year zones are learning and becoming more competitive.

With 256 bowlers competing from ages ranging between 15 to 75, we certainly have a game for all ages at all levels.

The four clubs I visited over the four days certainly made sure every­ thing was well in place for a suc­ cessful tournament.

Riverina Australian Football Club, Wagga City Leagues, Wagga RSL, and South Wagga were the hosts.

The local member, Jeff Hunter, echoed these remarks. A keen bowler himself when time permits, he stated that it was good to remi­ nisce with so many of his dad’s (retired local member, Merve) friends.

Lindemans Wines were one of the main sponsors and kept their very smooth red and chardonnay flowing throughout the night. I am told the spariding wine was also of first class quality, and to round off the very well attended night.

President Graeme Simpson and CEO Jim Parry, insisted we finish with a bottle of the great Lindemans Macquarie Port.

N ew castle Ladies Shirley and I were invited to attend the annual carnival/concert of the Newcastle District Women’s BA. The dancers/singers/comedians (all from local bowling clubs) were terrific and supplied two hours of really fabulous non-stop entertain­ ment.

All local, and many visitors that attended the carnival and concert, were very high in their praise for the organisation of both events.

Forstcr/Tuncurry State Councillor Des Skinner and I were invited to participate in the 40th anniversary of the Forster/ Tuncurry Memorial Services Club Skipjacks bowling combination, and we were joined by Zone 6 State Councillor Ken Guy and Secretary Jack Daniels.

President David Gall was a great host and really made the theme of the day “Friendship” - and believe me that theme was adopted by the 168 bowlers participating.

It was three greens full of happy bowlers and as Senior Vice President of the Manning, Jim Dyer, commented in his speech at dinner, “168 bowlers all nicely attired in creams and club shirts, sure beats the hell out of mufti”.

It was good to meet up again with former State player John Dooker, and now patron of the Manning,

who acted as toastmaster for the day.

Response to the toast to the visi­ tors was by 93-year-old Jim Morrison, from Bankstown City BC, again proving we have a game for all ages. Jim was terrific on the green.

When you look at the success of the Skipjacks over 40 years now, with well over 300 members all fully affiliated bowlers, who are willing to pay an extra fee to be part of this wonderful group, it speaks well for their and our future.

2. Formulating the Plan A plan was actually formulated as the tasks and options were being con­ sidered, this was not as difficult or daunting as it seemed at the first meeting because of a number of con­ straints.

The major constraint was cost, the others being feasibility and a division of opinion - this was always resolved amicably.

Letters from the Ingleburn men’s and women’s bowling clubs were writ­ ten to the following: Ingleburn View Club, Ingleburn Probus Club, Ingleburn Apex Club, Ingleburn Rotary Club, and Ingleburn Lions Club.

Leaflets were distributed to mem­ bers on bowling days and announce­ ments made requesting their assistance in promoting the day, as well as acting as hosts and hostesses on the day.

We did not participate in the Ingleburn Community Festival one week before our Open Day; in retro­ spect this was probably an oppor­ tunity lost.

The convenor discussed the possi­ bility of promoting lawn bowls in the secondary schools in the area with Mr Dennis Hardy, a member, who is a secondary school teacher, and also reports to the committee. After con­ sidering Mr Hardy’s comments, it was decided not to include schools in the

drive and to refer the matter to the two bowling clubs.

We had no idea of the radio sta­ tion’s coverage, nor the type of listen­ ers. This, together with a cost of $1,440 for 12 commercials, seemed high when our total budget was $ 2 ,0 0 0 .

There were two options left for advertising, local press and leaflets.

Using the Advertiser and Chronicle would have cost about $1,400, once again a large slice of our budget. The other option was to have more leaflets printed and rely on club members to distribute them to letterboxes.

On this premise, we decided on leaflets. But could we manage to dis­ tribute 24,500 - which was the esti­ mated number of residences in the area to be canvassed? We already had the 5,000 leaflets which had been donated, so a decision was made to

print another 10,000 at an estimated cost of $350.

This meant we would circulate leaflets to about half the residences, it is possible some of us thought this meant every second house would receive a leaflet.

Announcements were made on bowling days and notices placed in the clubhouse requesting assistance to dis­ tribute the leaflets, however there were not enough volunteers to make this feasible, so it was decided to investigate the cost of having a com­ pany distribute them.

Prices were obtained from compa­ nies which distribute junk mail, and it was estimated that it would cost about $800 to distribute the 15,000 leaflets.

This would make the cost of printing and distribution about $1,150, which would be more suited to our budget.

The area into which the leaflets were distributed was given to the dis­ tributor and the leaflets, in bundles of 100, delivered to their warehouse.

There is still much speculation as to where they were distributed, and until the guests were asked on Open Day there was some doubt as to whether the leaflets were actually distributed, very few members acknowledged hav­ ing received one. While it appears a number of suburbs were missed, it seems many other households received one.

It was also decided to request the secretary/manager of the club to include a reference to the Open Day in the club’s weekly advertisement in the Advertiser. He readily agreed to do this and the advertisement included the Open day in the two editions prior to the day.

decided members would wear casual sports wear.

On arrival, guests would be wel­ comed at the front door, signed in, asked how they heard of the event, issued with a name tag, introduced to a member who would be their host or hostess and invited to have morning tea.

At about 10.30am the presidents of the men’s and women’s bowling clubs would officially welcome the guests.

At 10.45am, guests, their hosts or hostesses would go on to the greens until noon when it would be back to the clubhouse for a complimentary drink and sausage sizzle. After lunch games would be arranged for any guests or members who wished to play.

Membership forms were to be made available.

No firm contingency plans were made in the event of rain, however members of the committee agreed to be at the clubhouse well before 10am and stay until 1 lam in case any guests arrived or there were any phone calls.

A member of the committee agreed to contact guests after the Open Day in order to ascertain their impression of the day and encourage them to become members.

3. Estimating the Cost Once again the planning phase was extended, this time to include cost­ ings. this was done in order to avoid an over budget plan being developed.

KEY ELEMENTS FOR SUCCESS • As far as possible, telephone each guest before the Open Day, so as to help to get to know them.

• Select hosts carefully, so as to match with guests, taking into account friends, age, gender, interests, etc.

• Brief hosts regarding their duties, e.g. by preliminary m eeting, printed sheet (see Appendix to How to Recruit Successfull};).

• Each host should have only one to two guests to look after.

• The host/guest relationship will be a significant factor in deter­ mining whether or not the guest decides to take up bowls.

As the cost of this plan was within budget and was along the lines of the Royal’s publication and the “Bowls Alive” articles, the committee decided to proceed with it.

The president of the men’s club and the acting president of the women’s club were informed of the plan and the cost.

The Open Day It was a beautiful day, a bit warm for some judging by the quantity of water consumed by those on the greens.

Guests started arriving just before 10am, were welcomed and processed according to plan. There were 43 guests, most entered through the front door, however a number used the side entrance.

44% came with or were invited by a member.

37% learned about the Open Day from the leaflet delivered to their let­ terbox.

10% were social members of the club.

1 person heard about it on 2UE. The remainder read about it in the club’s advertisement in the Advertiser.

The Clovelly club reported similar percentages in the article in “Bowls Alive”.

While morning tea was being enjoyed the president of the men’s bowling club and the president of the women’s bowling club welcomed the guests, after which guests, hosts and hostesses went on to the greens,

which looked magnificent, a credit to the greenkeepers.

At noon, all adjourned to the club­ house for the complimentary drink and the sausage sizzle, and judging by the sound of laughter and the buzz of conversation this was the social aspect of bowls at its best.

After lunch about 30 guests and members took the opportunity to return to the green for a game.

Over 50 members of both the women’s and men’s bowling clubs, in casual sports wear, were there to assist. Most acted as hosts or host­ esses, while others prepared and served the food.

During the day, 17 guests filled in membership application forms and paid a provisional membership tee of $5.

Expenditure The cost of the Recruitment Drive and Open Day was less than the esti­ mate of $1600.

Follow Up It was originally intended to phone all guests who did not apply for mem­ bership on the Open Day, however this did not prove to be workable, as the majority were not listed in the phone directories, so it was decided to write and enclose an application form.

A Review of the Recruitment Drive and Open Day It would have been difficult to cope adequately with many more guests on two greens. With 43 guests and over 50 members, there was a good bal­ ance - everyone appeared to be doing something.

The committee’s objective of 30 quests was exceeded, and the response from members was excellent. Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves.

The aspects of the project which have generated discussion are the overwhelming success of the day, the number of guests, member participa­ tion and the number of new members, and secondly, the use of leaflets as the main method of advertising the Open Day. The success of the day should encourage the Ingleburn Bowling and Recreation Club Co-Op Ltd to seri­ ously consider organising and funding another recruitment drive in the future. The use of leaflets will now be discussed.

canvassed. By distributing 14,400 leaflets, only a little more than half the residences would receive a leaflet.

The result was that some suburbs did not receive any, while other sub­ urbs seemed to have been covered.

They were distributed during the weekend prior to the Open Day, and as one person reported, there was a lot of junk mail that day, among which was the leaflet.

The cost of leaflet distribution was more than half the total cost and it is of concern that we had very little con­ trol over what we paid for. Apart from cost, the drawback to using leaflets is the reliance placed on a street walker to put it in the letterbox and not in the rubbish bin, and then hope that the householder will read it when it is delivered with other junk mail.

While leaflets have been known to be a successful method of advertisiing, there must be room for improvement.

Expecting club members to distribute leaflets to letterboxes will probably be no more successful next time.

While we may be disappointed with the leaflet distribution it resulted in the second highest number of guests on Open Day, as it did in Clovelly.

There is no disputing that the most successful and least cost method of attracting new members is through existing members; both Clovelly and ourselves proved this. Instead of pay­ ing for printing and distributing leaflets or placing advertisements in the local press, the money saved could be used to fund incentives for members who recruit.

Any member who recruits a bowl­ ing member during a specified period, say two months, could be rewarded.

The reward would have a nominal value, say $40, and be redeemable at a local business, restaurant, theatre or the club in much the same way as the vouchers in use in the men’s bowling club.

Recommendations 1. Three to four months should be allowed to plan the Recruitment Drive and Open Day after the com­ mittee has been formed.

2. The Open Day should be held in September when it would be outside the pennant season and before the hot weather.

6. Consideration should be given to conducting a combined recruiting drive with Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden and Austral Bowling Clubs.

7. A senior member of the executive of each of the men’s and women’s bowling clubs should be on the com­ mittee.

8. A means of receipting payments for membership on Open Day should be available.

9. Introducing bowls into schools should not be part of a Recruitment Drive.

10. On Open Day, guests should be encouraged to enter the clubhouse through the front door rather than the side entrance.

Introducing Bowls Into Schools The committee decided this matter should be referred to the men’s and women’s bowling club committees for consideration. It is a long term pro­ ject, and therefore outside the scope of this committee.

It is recommended a committee solely responsible for fostering bowls in schools should be set up. When forming the committee, the following points need to be considered.

1. Agreement has to be reached with the sports master or mistress at least six months in advance so that lawn bowls can be listed as a sport.

2. Generally, secondary school sports days are on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and can vary from school to school.

3. The number of students should be limited to 12 per school, otherwise there needs to be more than one teacher supervising.

4. Bowling members would need to be appointed to liaise with schools regarding the availability of greens.

This is particularly important on sports day when it is raining.

Umpires Let it be stated that umpires are an integral part of our sport. It would be greatly appreciated, how­ ever, if umpires realise the “prime objective” of our duty umpire is that they are there to assist in the smooth and equitable running of the game.

Our game is played and organised for the benefit of the players to enjoy and participate at all levels.

Most importantly, an umpire should not intervene unless either player calls for the umpire so that the issue may be settled with due reference to BA Laws and recog­ nised interpretations thereof.

At a recent ceremony held on-site, CEO Ken Barber, announced that Donald Robinson Village, Kirrawee, was named after the former Archbishop as a tribute to his life and ministry.

A large number of guests and potential residents were in attendance to celebrate this occasion.

Sales and Marketing Manager, Helen Lear, says, “The village will be ideal for active retirees who want the best of both worlds - to remain in the local area they have enjoyed so much, very close to amenities and live in a modern maintenance-free home within a caring and supportive community.”

Donald Robinson Village is conveniently located at the corner of the Princes Highway and Acacia Road at Kirrawee, close to local shops and public transport links.

IV L c iilh o x The humble "measure" SIR: A very importarrt, and yet usually neglected instrum ent in the bow ler's bag, is the measure. With this simple instrument, shots for and against are quick­ ly and reliably determined.

Experience gained over m any years playing lawn bowls, and considerably longer as a practical builder, I have found that the hum an eye is most unreliable in estimating differences in distances, especially when the difference betw een two bowls is less than 40mm (IK inches).

I have yet to meet or hear of anybody who has a gen­ uine accuracy record in excess of 70%, although many erroneously claim 100% accuracy. Strangely enough, any distance over 750 m m {1% feet) is regularly mea­ sured.

I have noted that m any bowlers fail to accept that shadows, light and dark patches in the texture of the green, various lines caused by "coring" or the way the grass has been cut, together with many other factors can (and do) cause errors in the way me hum an eye interprets the results.

These optical illusions are especially noticeable in close m easurem ents and can be aggravated by weak­ nesses in the individual's eyesight.

The m ethod of "accurately m easuring" is regularly debated around the various clubs, and 1 do not intend entering into that debate, except to say that there are m any suspect m easurers of Doth genders on our greens.

No underhanded action SIR: I w ould like to be given the opportunity to respond to a letter w ritten by B.McAlister, of Quandialla, and published in the "Mailbox" section of the A ugust issue of "Bowls Alive" magazine.

M r McAlister seems to believe that the venue for the Zone 8 Cham pionships was changed from his club to C ootam undra Ex Services BC because of some under­ handed actions by myself.

Firstly, let me quote from the By-Laws relating to the conduct of Zone 8 events, which is part of the consti­ tution.

Section 2 relates to Zone 8 Championships.

Law 2.4.1 states t h a t " The ven u e/s for play will be determ ined by the Zone 8 Delegates at the Armual General Meeting of Delegates in June each year. Clubs w ithin the Zone are invited to submit tenders to the Zone 8 Secretary by the 31st May if they wish to host the championships. Details submitted shall include details of tow n and club facilities and officials avail­ able."

Law 2.4.2 states that "The venues for the Zone 8 Junior Cham pionships will be determined by the Zone 8 Match Committee'^ There is no m ention in the By Laws, or aiw part of the Constitution for that matter, giving the Executive Committee the right to make such a decision as indi­ cated by Mr McAlister. Indeed, if he had been notified in M arch that his club was to host these 2 0 BOWLS ALIVE - OCTOBER 2 0 0 2

Championships, all other clubs in the Zone were enti­ tled to be upset, as the closing date for tenders is May 31.

Mr McAlister states that his club was williiw to part with the $500 fee to make the application. O ur club also m ade application on March 4, and was willing to pay the same fee, and under the Constitution was enti­ tled to have its cause, along with any other club that applied, debated at the armual meeting.

Mr McAlister states that his club was informed by phone that it had been selected as the venue. Our club secretary rang the Zone 8 secretary a few days after the application had been sent in to check that it had been received, and was informed that our application was good and to start preparations.

W hen he inform ed me of this, I told him that this could not be so, as the decision would not be m ade until the June meeting.

I had heard rum ours that Quandialla was to host the Zone Championships, and I approached the Zone sec­ retary.

He told me in person in April that he supported Quandialla because he had been informed m at our club had no facilities to provide meals for the players and officials. I told him that this information was not correct.

In fact, we believe that our bistro and dining room facilities are equal to those of any other club in the Zone. I informed him then that not only was his deci­ sion based on incorrect information, it was also uncon­ stitutional.

I told him that if he had told Quandialla that they had been given the Championships, then he should immediately contact them and tell them w hat I had told him. It seems that he did not take my advice.

At no time at the annual meeting in June was it announced that Quandialla was to host these events, and I deny protesting loudly that my club should be the venue, even though I did speak in its favour.

W hen the subject was raised according to the meet­ ing agenda, the Zone secretary nom inated Quandialla as the venue and spoke on its behalf. I then nominated Cootamundra Ex Services and spoke on its behalf.

These were the only two applicants.

There were two more speakers, including a Zone vice president, who spoke in favour of Quandialla, and the South West District president who spoke in favour of Cootamundra Ex Services.

A vote was then taken and Cootamundra was cho­ sen 8 votes to 5.

On June 23 I informed Mr McAlister that the Zone 8 Championships were to be held at Cootamundra. As Mr McAlister is the District Singles Champion, it was my responsibility as District secretary to inform him w hen and where he w ould be playing.

Although I supported the tender of Cootamundra Ex Services club at the meeting, I feel that I acted in good faith and at all times followed correct procedure.

If there is any fault, it lies with executive of the Zone.

Indeed, if the Quandialla club had followed the Constitution of the South West District, as the Cootamundra Ex Services did, they w ould have sent their application to me to forward on their behalf.

I w ould have then been aware earlier that they had applied and some discussion between the two clubs and the South West District Executive could have

I would like to add that not once did any member of the Quandialla club committee contact me in any way (phone, fax or mail) to let me know that they had applied or to ask for my support.

More information wanted SIR: I read with great interest the articles appearing in the September issue of "Bowls Alive" relating to the marvellous success of our bowlers with disabilities at the recent Commonwealth Games.

Having taken up bowls as a former golfer, following a severe stroke, I nave become an avid fan and participanf.

Fortunately for me, having exhausted all the rehabil­ itation programs, a neighbour suggested bowls as a sporting activity I might be able to manage, and intro­ duced me to Ken Scott, the then coach at Dee W hy RSL BC, and he kindly persevered with me until I could safely be allowed onto a green.

His efforts introduced me to a wonderful new world that I continue to enjoy.

Having successfully competed against able-bodied bowlers, (lead in winning the Fours Championship at Manly BC, and winning tne Minor Singles in 2000 and the Major Singles in 2001 at DYRSL BC) I sought to ascertain if their was a Disabled Bowlers Association, and was given the telephone number of a group that comprised wheelchair bowlers only.

Three generations win SIR: Just writing about something special that occurred at our club recently, which you may like to mention in "Mailbox".

The winner of our m en's friples competition this year was the three generation team of Kevin, Bruce and Graham Fliedner.

The team was skipped by Graham, so some good advice m ust have been handed down by his dad Bruce, and Grandad Kevin.

I know it would not be the first time this has hap­ pened in a bowling club, but I think it deserves a men­ tion as it is something special.

Dilemma for umpires SIR: The comments attributed to Geoff Oakley in your report on the Com m onwealth Games in the Sepember issue of Bowls Alive highlight a dilemma faced by National Umpires across the state.

In NSW we play to laws of the game as laid dow n

by Bowls Australia w ith some small modification through the RNSWBA Conditions of Play. One of the um pire's duties is to ensure that those laws and condi­ tions are observed.

Law 64B(ii)(f) tells everyone that. Yet w hen an um pire steps in to try to get a player to comply with the law book, the um pire is often labelled the villain w ith the player breaching the law(s) becoming the irmocent victim of m altreatm ent by an over zealous official.

The gentlemen who run the sport of lawn bowls should take a long hard look at the laws of the game, decide which laws they w ant players to observe, and those which they do not care whether the players observe or not.

They then should have all the laws in the latter cat­ egory deleted from the book.

Until that happens, please do not criticise the um pire for the w rong doings of the players.

Shedding crocodile tears ?

SIR: While I fully support the concept and existing for­ m at of Premier League, I cannot but feel that the reason for the withdrawal of Warilla from the competition has a greater connotation than that which was given by Rcmert Tynan (letters August issue).

He alluded to the view that his other graded players could not compete in grades 1 to 7, and at the same time avail themselves of the opportunity to witness and possibly learn from the skills of their Premier League side, which in turn affected spectator support and club revenue.

But is the "Gorilla" really shedding Crocodile tears?

My reading is that the real benefit to be gained in moving Premier League is to allow the club to use the Conditions of Play for Pennant to their best advantage, by using their Premier League players to play Grades 1 to 7 early in the year, then lift them up to Premier League w ithout contravening the Elevation and Regression rules in the C.O.P. Perhaps I am wrong in this assumption, and if I am I apologise, but if not, a logical alternative is to play Premier League early in the year with their 21 ends game, and play grades 1 to 7 later (say July to September), and have the State Pennant Play-offs on the October long weekend.

This way we could get back to real pennants of 25 ends and have the best greens to play on. This would satisfy Warilla's needs as stated, and m aintain the integrity of the Conditions of Play.

It may take two years to rearrange the State calendar to do this, but it IS not impossible, and it w ould do what a lot of bowlers have been saying for years. It w ould also encourage the lesser mortals to continue playing pennant w ithout having to compete w ith high profile players for a pennant spot.

Memories ofNarrabeen SIR: It was very sad to see that Narrabeen Memorial BC has at last finished.

I have only belonged to two bowling clubs in my life - Narrabeen BC and Milton Ulladulla BC. It was in the former where I learnt the game and made so maiw great friends. The mates taught me at Narrabeen BC the importance of correct attire, m an­ ners, and above all, good sportmanship.

It will always be remembered by me with happiness.

W hen I left Narrabeen in 1985 to come to Milton Ulladulla, I thought it would be impossible to find a club as friendly and enjoyable as the club that I left Narrabeen.

However, Milton Ulladulla BC has been just that to me. I have been very fortunate, indeed.

Give my regards to all the old mates of Narrabeen, especially Jack Howie, if he is still around.

AN OPEN FORUM FOR READERS Penalise the drive SIR: I refer to the John Donahue's comments in "Bowls Alive" letters, September, 2002, on the excessive use of the drive.

Since I started playing, I have practised and prac­ tised to try and attain a level of skill as a lead, so as to set up a good head for my team mates, or myself in the case of singles.

I have found this is a totally futile exercise when a player decides the head is set to their disadvantage, and try to destroy it with drives until the object is achieved.

In fact, I have got to the stage where I have won­ dered what is the point of developing a high level of skill, w hen the level of skill attained is not rewarded, and cannot be of any advantage in the game.

Therefore, why can't the rules only encourage the on shot? It displays a player's respect for the shots of the bowlers w ho set up the head, and demands a high degree of skill and accuracy to take control without destroying the end.

I would like to take Mr Donahue's suggestion one step further and have the drive removed totally from the game, or at least penalised sufficiently to discour­ age it.

I am a new bowler (July, 2002) and have taken to the game like a duck to water.

My enthusiasm for the game is as much due to the welcome and encouragement of the committee and members of my club as to my level of ability, but my passion for the game could also be diminished by the use of w hat I consider a completely negative shot.

Letters from readers are always welcome, and must include the name and address of the writer for publication. The views expressed in any letter are those of the individual writer, and must be considered in this context. Preference is given to letters which are concise and contain construc­ tive comments or information.

Just think what this answer could mean to new members before a singles match. I feel that the term "up" is unnecessary, and really there is no point to have it written after shots.

After checking through manuals and law books, I find the term "shots up" is very common in our game.

I am suggesting that the term "shots up" should sim­ ply read "shots". The term "up" is incorrect when used as printed.

Please think about w hat I have written. D on't dis­ miss this article. I, like m any bowlers, use the term shots up, but in future my answer to scores for singles play will not contain the w ord "up".

It took a 15 year old high school student during his second coaching session on the green to point out how urmecessary the term written is.

The more I thought about it, the more I was con­ vinced he was right. We should move to have "up" removed after shots.

"Up" is not necessary SIR: I regularly read where nominations for major sin­ gles tournam ents have conditions of play that read sec­ tion matches will be 21 shots up, others quote 31 shots up.

We also see reference to "shots up" in District and Zone level conditions of play. When we read this, we automatically read it different to that printed. It really means the first to 21 or 31 shots.

I know experienced bowlers are saying that I should be aware of its true meaning of "shots up". Of course I am.

Recently, during a coaching session of high school students in lawn bowls, a lad asked me the question, "how do we score in matches played?"

Well, pairs, triples and fours were easy to explain.

When I quoted that in singles play we play 21 or 31 shots up; in set play the score is the best of three sets of seven shots up.

The student then asked if the match of 31 shots up could last many hours, due to the fact that the winner must be 31 shots up - say 50-19.

CHARITY FUND Help umpires enforce laws SIR: You have just printed an article (September) in which the Australian coach/m anager, Geoff Oakley, criticises a Com m onwealth Games Umpire for "an over officious action which swung the result of the m atch and was not in the spirit of the game".

He is also quoted as saying that Yn 36 years of bowls, I have seen this happen once in a minor club tournam ent w hen an official wanted to be part of the game".

Also, in the Singles Cham pionship on TV last Saturday (September 14) both players were ignoring the laws, as was pointed out by the commentators, but the um pire took no action.

W hen did you last see a player warned, let alone penalised, for a 'foot fault'?

As an um pire, I am asking why do we still have laws, which, if any um pire takes attempts to enforce the law, w hen it is broken, they come in for severe crit­ icism.

That this criticism in the Steve Glasson case comes from the highest level is even worse.

If any of the Laws of Bowls are not to be enforced by officials and players at the highest levels of the game, and w ith the total support of Association, then w hat chance does the ordinary um pire have in trying to enforce any Law? I call on the RNSWBA, together w ith Bowls Australia, to either direct that the Laws shall be applied firmly in all competitions, or do away with any Law which is consistently broken and is, in the w ords of Geoff Oakley, "not in the spirit of the game".

An over-zealous umpire does more damage than good from reports received, and actions observed by players and officials throughout NSW. Clearly a “respected umpire” is one who knows the laws, measures accurately and goes about his or her duties in an efficient and unobtrusive manner.

There is also an obligation on all players to conform to the Laws of the Game.

Your State Umpires Committee is seeking to increase its numbers of active accredited umpires. Why not do an umpires course and increase your knowledge of our great game. Speak to the club chairman of umpires.

ETER CIANI is the coun­ try’s foremost Australian/ Italian singer songwriter and recording artist.

Over the last 30 years Peter has written and recorded over 200 orig­ inal compositions and covered over 100 songs.

One of his compilations, Italian Favourites, produced for Telmark in 1985, reached the Top 100 on the Australian Hit Parade.

Peter has also written songs for the Australian TV mini series Fields of Fire I, II and III. At the age of 18 living in Sicily, Peter sold his only possession, an accordion given to him by his moth­ er, in order to get to Rome to study at the prestigious Rome Conservatorium of Music.

In the 6 0 ’s, after completing his studies, Peter travelled to Australia to visit his sister and as the title of his 22nd album, ‘Australia...This Beautiful Country’ suggests, he fell in love with Australia and made it his home.

Once in Australia, Peter quickly

set about to form his own band and was successful in playing at night­ clubs throughout the country.

After winning first place in Hector Crawford’s Showcase, on Channel 10, Peter became so well known that EMI Records immediately signed him up and subsequently put out his first recording, released not only in Australia and Italy, but also in Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Argentina and Japan.

The release of this single was a first in Australian recording industry history to be aimed directly at the Italian market.

Since signing up with the European recording company, MIA Records, Peter has returned to Europe nearly every year, combin­ ing concert tours with national tele­ vision appearances.

It was after his popularity became evident, through local media and due to the biographical exposure he had on one of the most popular

Italian current affairs shows. Uno Mattina, that the Australian Embassy in Rome asked Peter to come back soon and say more about his adopted country.

Due to his popularity, Peter is always in constant demand.

In 2000 he was invited by Italy’s most influential Reggion, Emilia Romagna, to participate in a song festival performing one of his own compositions, “La Bella Italia (Beautifully Italy)’’, whereupon he took out the first prize.

In January, 2001, Peter was a special guest of RAI international in a show entitled Notturno Italiano that was broadcast throughout the world.

Peter on this occasion launched some of his latest original composi­ tions, such as “Santo Padre Pio”, “Amica Primavera, Buongiorno” and “La Bella Italia”, all of which appear on his latest album.

It is widely regarded throughout the state as the premier bowls tour­ nament and attracts close to 1000 entries in the singles, pairs and teams of four events.

This year, the tournament marks the 50th anniversary of the founda­ tion of the Illawarra Zone 16 Bowls Association, and promises to be the best ever.

During the carnival, games are held at most of the 26 bowling clubs in the Illawarra region, with the finals played at the fabulous Oak Flats BC. Finalists are assured of exceptionally good conditions at Oak Flats, Stephen Green (NSW pairs champion), and Tom Ellem (Australian Singles champion), are both on the greenkeeping staff at the club.

collaboration with his long time friend John Parks, says it all. As for the rest of the album, with the exception of the quirky and very humorous “The Fish In A Tin”, it is a collection of beautiful country love songs which Peter composed and sings in his inimitable style.

Peter also wrote the songs, “Sydney H arbour”, “Spirit Of Australia” and “Wooloomooloo”, which will be featured on his next album.

Reg Evans, who has organised the South Pacific Bowls carnival for most of the past 20 years, has pulled out all stops to ensure that this year’s event will be the best ever.

He believes that this carnival is something the whole Illawarra region should be proud of, as it acts as an advertisement for the region to bowlers from many other parts of NSW. Reg invites bowlers from all over the state to enter for the carnival and help Illawarra Zone 16 Bowls Association celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Many well-known bowlers, as well as local identities from the Illawarra region, feature among the past win­ ners in the South Pacific Bowls tournament.

The list of singles champions includes Sandy McMillan, Bob Pinkerton, Tom Brown, Frank Soars, Brian Entwistle, Bob Bartlett, Rob Parella, Bill Webber, Terry Baldwin, Bobby Dunn, Troy Somerville, Brett Duprez, Adam Jeffreys, Leif Selby, Wayne Crane, Shane Garvey and Russell Meyer.

The list of pairs winners includes many pairs from local clubs, as well as recognised champions such as Gus Bianchetto and Angie Sotoris; Alan Horsfall and Adrian McGuire; ^ Ron Dennis and Joe Amos; Peter j Woods and Phil Bushby; and i " Stephen Green and Troy Somerville. \ The fours title was for many years won by Bob Pinkerton’s team. This remarkable skipper led his team to victory seven times between 1961 and 1985, a record number of vic­ tories in the tournament.

Other skippers of winning teams include Angie Sotoris, Bob Zovi, Fred Lewis, Neville Brown, Peter Rheuben, Phil Bushby, Rob Parella, Alan Baker, Jim Dwyer, Shane Garvey and Bill Webber.

Play was halted so that everyone could gather around for the unveil­ ing of a plaque and official naming of the Lyle Cronk Green.

Lyle, a life member of the club, has been battling cancer since the beginning of this year.

State Councillor Des Anderson performed the naming ceremony and several members of Lyle’s fam­ ily were present.

Since Lyle joined the Eden BC committee many years ago, he has been secretary from 1986 to 1989, president during the years of 1989-92, and secretary again from 1994 to his enforced retirement this year due to health problems.

He has also been bowls organiser at the club, and for several years was treasurer of the Far South Coast DBA, as well as serving on most of the sub-committees.

THE CRITERIA FOR COACHINQ SIDES The first consideration when coaching sides is to realise that each team is individual.

There are no two sides alike.

There are no two teams alike.

No two players have the same playing style.

No two players have the same physical ability.

No two skips read the head the same way.

No two skips apply the same tac­ tics to the same problem.

So when dealing with sides you try not to fit them into your concept of what they should be, you should try to discover what their concept happens to be, then you can take a virtual step forward and begin coaching sides.

The requirements we have followed for second and subsequent ends will now apply to all ends. [Law 18A in 2002 Law Book] This change brings Australia back into line with international practice.

It will eliminate all those arguments about what to do if a first or extra end is started with the mat not in the mandatory position.

ANATOMY OF THE BIG GAME WHATEVER the competitive stan­ dard of the game, be it from a social gala to international representation, winning always takes precedence, drawing is secondary, and losing is the least preferred option.

Most commonly, in any game 50% are winners and 50% are losers; and of those winners, their percentage rate of winning is usually, continually high. Winners seem to keep on winning and win­ ning!

Be it in individual or team play, the after-game non-winners’ discussion often include such comments as: “I wasn’t on my game today.”

“I lost concentration at the wrong time” “They were psyched up more than we were.”

“They played the right shot at the right time.”

Certainly, appropriate evaluation comments, but to provide and pro­ duce an effective turn around of future results, a simply constructed performance plan with personalised activities should be developed and utilised.

The component sections of guid­ ing yourself to improved perfor­ mance with the goal of winning, should include, if not all, a high pro­ portion of the following:-

Before the day of the game Practice of positional skills is, of course, fundamental. As a lead, roll the jack to various lengths in associa­ tion with different positional place­ ments of the mat.

Draw as close to the Jack as possi­ ble, back and front, not forgetting displaced positions such as near the ditch or boundary lines.

Also, take some time to become familiar with the apparent strengths and weaknesses of your opposition.

If playing as a second, drawing practice is still essential. An addition to your armoury should include posi­ tional placements and the “just a yard on your last”.

A valuable asset to your practice could be through the use of a second set of bowls to be placed as the opposition bowls. Create scenarios that you feel may occur during a game with those bowls.

Both third and skipper need to enhance their competencies in all of the required shots: drawing, on shots and driving. Essential to their suc­

cessful performance level, should be practice sessions where together they place to a set variety of scenarios using several sets of “opposition” bowls.

This type of routine will assist in the reading of the head and develop their communication and tactical skills.

On the day of the game Positive thoughts of the outcome of a game are to be encouraged.

Occasional momentary visualisation of successful shots will assist in your mental preparation.

As you follow normal routines throughout the preliminary period, care should be taken in not pursuing activities that may bring on an unex­ pected accident or trigger old injuries.

Never to be left to the last minute should be the transport arrangements that ensure a relaxed and timely arrival.

Immediately prior to the game Be emotionally calm and aware of what is required of you as part of a team member or as an individual player. If playing in a team, relax with your fellow players at the venue of the game, taking in the atmosphere and the environmental surrounds.

It is a time to focus your thoughts on the successful playing of the initial ends. Check the green for its condi­ tion and the apparent differences that may be obvious to that of your home green. Thoughts should include possible approaches to “grass and weight; line and length”.

Ensure that an allotted time is used for physical warm-up routines. The player whose body is ready to play has a distinct advantage over an opposition that takes time to settle into the game.

Most of all, enjoy the adrenalin rush of nervousness. This is an indi­ cator that the body is ready to per­ form at a higher than normal capacity. Recognise and utilise this powerful performance enhancer.

During the game Any important game can be seen to have three stages. Being aware of them and knowing how to conduct and plan your approach during each

stage can add an important advan­ tage factor to your play.

In the Beginning Stage: Ends 1-5 • Be calm as you come to grips with the opposition, conditions and playing surface.

• Be purposeful in your approach as you call on your practised skills.

• Be observant of initial tactics being employed.

• Be supportive and provide encour­ agement to fellow team mates.

In the Middle Stage: Ends 6-15 • Ensure full concentration on the game scenarios and delivery options.

• Avoid distraction of your purpose by over interacting with the oppo­ sition.

• Maintain team encouragement through positive comments and praise.

• Observe flaws and/or possible opportunities that may begin to appear in the opponents’ game.

In the Final Stage: Ends 16-25 • Maximise concentration by not being diverted from your focus on the game.

• Take additional time in considering your tactics and delivery tech­ niques.

• Be conscious of the state of the total game if other rinks are involved.

• Be conscious of the inherent dehy­ dration or potential performance reducing dangers of alcohol con­ sumption within your own team or the opposition.

After the games conclusion Finally, some thoughts should be given to how to cope in dealing with victory or defeat. Coming to terms with it yourself is only part of the pic­ ture.

There can be a multitude of other people with whom you may have to react with: media personalities, team­ mates, opposition players and man­ agement, spectators, own club members and not forgetting, both your family and immediate friends.

As thoughts of evaluation on the game emerge, initial planning strate­ gies for continued practice routines or progress to the next round of games, should be being formulated.

With the closure of Inverell BC, the small Inverell RSM BC has grown from 27 members to 75. With the influx of new members, the club has become more com­ petitive and now enters two pennant sides, and several bowlers have competed in District and Zone events. he small Uralla BC has conducted its annual Thunderbolt Pairs Carnival, and again it proved to be most successful with a full field and excellent weath­ er. Twenty-eight teams contested the event, with six games of 15 ends being played over the two days. The prizemoney went down to eighth place, which is appre­ ciated by the players. Winners were the composite pair of Steve Goodwiin (Walcha), and Craig Q ’Toole (Kootingal). This was a great performance, as this was the only pair to win all six games. Second place went to Richie Clutterbuck and Chris Brodbeck (Armidale City) with 5 wins -I- 155. Third were Terry McMillan, Ross Marshall (Armidale City), fourth Jay and Graham Porter, a father and son combination from Armidale City, fifth were the composite team of Peter Leggatt (Uralla) and Alex McMillan (Toronto Workers). Sixth place went to Gary Latham and Ross Higgins, seventh were the Walcha team of Brian Lockyer and Harry Wood and the final prizemoney to Bill Dart from South Tamworth and Norm Roberts from Kootingal. rmidale Ex-Services Memorial BC has staged a very successful Spring Carnival with full fields on all three A days. The Armidale Roof Tilers Pairs was conducted on the Friday in seven sections and a wild card to make up the final eight pairs. The final was won by the Armidale City pair of Warwick Morris and Steve Fuller, who defeated Paul Bourke (Armidale Ex-Services) and Woody Bullen (Forster) in a close field. Carl, who has been president of the Western Plains for a number of years, is moving for family rea­ sons, and no doubt his expertise in most bowling and administrative matters could prove resourceful for both Narromine and the Far West. he RNSWJBA recently held a junior Zone 7-a-side event at West Dubbo BC. A first for both the junior organisation and Zone 4 saw some of the best junior bowlers from throughout the state vie for the title of champion Zone. The hard working executive team of president Tony Ashpole and Match committee chair­ man John Swan were in Dubbo for the weekend, and in conjunction with the West Dubbo club formally con­ ducted a very successful venture. Also on hand were three members of the selection panel, namely Barry Salter, Ken Field and John Rodis. During the course of the weekend, the eventual finalists, Newcastle and the Central Coast zones, emerged from the pack to estab­ lish their superiority in their respective sections. The final confrontation on Sunday morning saw Newcastle squeak home by the barest margin to win this inaugural event. The success of this event was virtually assured by the positive response from most Zones in NSW. Penrith BC in Zone 5, will host this event in 2003, with West Dubbo looking as the possible venue again in 2004. he draw for the finals series of the State Championships has been out and about for a month or so, and Zone 4 players have been given their agenda and are fully aware of the difficult road they have ahead of them if they are to win that elusive State title. Current Zone singles champion David Ferguson has a particu­ larly tough track, with current Australian Indoor Singles champion winner Steve Glasson in his half of the draw.

David’s first opponent. Rocky Stone, from Zone 16, will be tough as well, having recently qualified for this event by defeating last year’s winner, Tom Ellem, to reach this stage of the event. The Championships kick-off mid October, and will be a busy week for our champions with a couple of players in multiple events. Spare a thought also for Tiger McBride and Tom Fox; our cur­ rent Pairs champions, who will undertake a little drive from Cobar to Sydney to play in this knockout event.

t Gunnedah Ex-Services and BC singles champi­ onship, runner-up, Brian Shepherd, gained some consolation for his finals loss when he won the Over 65 Veterans Singles. In the final, Brian pulled clear to defeat Athol Barnes 31-17. Chris Ley and Brian Shepherd were in the money after winning the Minor/Major Pairs where the total prizemoney was $1000. This year’s meeting was held at the Dubbo City Club, with vice president Wally Hull of the Western Slopes District presiding in the absence of outgoing president Ralph Dark. During the course of the meeting, it was moved that an acknowledgement of Ralph’s outstanding contribution to lawn bowls in Zone 4 be recorded in the minutes. This resolution was passed with a unanimous vote and also by acclamation. Elections for the executive resulted in John Roberts, of Far West, taking the chair, while Steve Torrens and Neville Smith retained their positions of secretary and treasurer respectively. The meeting also acknowledged the Western Plains District’s current plight, and adopted a resolution to support the proposed implementation of an overall rationalisation of the boundaries of all Districts and Zones in NSW. A committee for this purpose has just recently been organ­ ised by the RNSWBA, and was confirmed by corre­ spondence received by State councillor Jim Peterson,, and presented to the annual meeting.

On day one, it was almost summer conditions, but on day two, just the opposite, which disrupted some of the play. The winners were a local team with the 2nd and 3rd from Berwick, Victoria. This is one of those great games which attract players from many clubs in NSW and Victoria.

While getting close in previous years, this was his year. He teamed up with Graeme Miller and took the honours away from Keith Davidson and Ken Brady. he word from Gerringong is that there are a couple of cheeky bowlers there at the moment. Vince Chetcuti has teamed up with his father-in-law, Alan Cilligan, in the handicap pairs, and managed to win the event three times out of their past five starts. They now have the lowest handicaps in the club. he Bermagui Major singles, pairs and triples have been completed, with the singles winner being Ron Gregory, who beat Reg Grant. Ron and Reg were defeated in the pairs by John Wilton and Fred Ovington.

They had a 38-25 victory against Temora trio Geoff Lack, Bruce Firman and Bruce Lack. It was an out­ standing game with the lead fluctuating and Lack’s team led 18-17 on the 17th end. But the combination from Wagga club RAFC set up their victory with 10 shots over the next six ends. In the semi-finals, Wright’s team had a 24-23 victory against the Riverina representatives and and Lack’s team defeated the Southern Highlands representatives. h e Griffith Ex-Services team of Keith McWilliam, Keith Wilson, Doug Turner and Des Page won the Zone fours championship. They defeated the South West team of Alex Watson, Cliff Traynor, Bob Taylor and skip Geoff Holt. The South West team won a pre­ liminary game against Wagga’s representatives to advance to a semi-final. It then defeated the South Highlands team from Gundagai skipped by Noel Hourn.

The Griffith team had a bye in the first round and won its semi-final to qualify for the final. h e South West District recently played two interDistrict games. The first was against Southern Slopes at Stockinbingal. In the first game. South West won four rinks to three, but trailed by three shots over­ all. It was a turnaround in the afternoon when Southern Slopes won four rinks to three by South West. Yet South West got 113 shots to 109 by Southern Slopes. After 256 ends of bowls, the margin was just one shot (228 to 227) to South West. The following week South West travelled to Tarcutta to play Southern Highlands. The first game in the morning saw South West win four rinks to three and lead 110 shots to 105. It was a similar

OUTH Wagga bowler James Brown won the Zone 8 champion of champion singles played at Albury’s SS&A club. He defeated the defending titleholder Norm Honey (SS&A), who was runner-up in the State cham­ pion of champion singles at Tamworth last year. Brown was representing the Wagga district and defeated Noel Hourn (Southern Highlands) 31-25 in a semi-final.

Honey played Bruce Lack (Southern Slopes) in the other semi-final and won 31-24. The score was 9-all in the final after 12 ends, but Brown established a break and finally won 31-19. a t h e r and son combination Clarrie and David Inglis made it a double for the Wagga district by winning the zone champion of champion pairs. They won a high standard first round game 21-20 against Riverina repre­ sentatives Mark Vogel and Sean Snudden, with Southern Highlands’ Ken Stubbs and Col Curtis win­ ning the other game 29-16 against against Bill Spletter and Geoff Smith, from Southern Slopes. In the semi­ finals, Clarrie and David Inglis defeated David Pielke and John Priestley (South West) 24-11 and Stubbs and Curtis toppled Conan and Noel Trainor (Albury) 24-12.

The margin in the final was 24-15 in favour of the Wagga combination.

AGGA RSL bowler Dennis Owen has struck a pur­ ple patch with recent successes. Within a week, he won the club’s invitation pairs and then claimed his first singles crown. Owen combined with Matthew Crane to win the pairs from Max Sandbrook (Wagga RSL) and Doug Barrett (Wagga City Leagues) and the RSL team of Clarrie Inglis and Bill Gilchrist. They were the only three games winners. Owen, playing his first season at RSL, met Clarrie Inglis in the singles final. No more than four shots separated them throughout before Owen took the title 32-29 after 34 ends.

Twenty six clubs participated in the event, with two games of fours over 21 ends, being played. The winner (with 40 points) was Forestville RSL BC (J. Sweeney, K. Flaherty, J. Ortmann and T. Sobard). They are now on display in the clubhouse, mounted in a showcase specially designed by chairman of the Board, Warwick Rogers. In the Centennary Book Souvenir 1880 to 1980, a short history of bowls in NSW, it was written that Thomas Fades, of Parramatta, had turned in 1867 the first set of wooden bowls made in Australia. A welcome back to Michael Calvert to championship bowls after a period out while attending to business and fatherly duties. t is also pleasing to note that RCBC’s winning triples team is able to keep their badge on this occasion and proceed to the final 16 in the State. Mid Week triples finished with a good reception of Pennant Hills’ hospi­ tality. The results in “A” Grade show the consistency of Rydalmere Central BC winning the flag. Gladesville has a mortgage on the “B” Grade, with Merrylands winning the “C” Grade. These teams now progress to Roselands for the Inter Zone play-offs. he John Coates Shield match was played at Castle Hill with PDBA again winners. This win was partic­ ularly pleasing as five new bowlers were introduced into the competition, all of whom were in the young age group. This again shows the changing face of bowls, to a game played by young people and also enjoyed by older bowlers. More will be seen of these bowlers in future representative games.

ONGRATULATIONS to Herb Bradman, who was elected a life member of the Eastern Suburbs DBA at its annual general meeting in August.

Herb has been president of the Association, as well as representing its interests in the Zone since its foundation in 1976. This is a well deserved recognition of his work over the years, and dedication to bowls in his District, and generally. ugust was a busy month for our selectors and rep­ resentative players, commencing with the Eastern Suburbs versus Western Suburbs game at Greenlees Park on August 4. This was between six teams in both ‘A’ and Reserve sides and (in both grades the results were close) with Wests winning by two shots (121/119) in the ‘A’ match, and five shots (128/123) in the Reserve match. In both games, each side had three rink wins. This match was followed by an intra zone fixture the following weekend, when six selected teams played among themselves to provide the selectors with an opportunity to evaluate players before selection for the game against Zone 9 the following weekend, as well as for the Inter Zone Round Robin to be played at Wagga on September 6, 7 and 8. On August 18, the repre­ sentative side of six teams had a frustrating visit to Dee Why for the match against Zone 9. After a Tong dry spell in Sydney, this game had to be abandoned after a cou­ ple of ends, because of rain, which left the greens inun­ dated.

Well, Alf Vale at the District meeting again rebutted the various rumours doing the circuit regarding the financial viability of South Cronulla BC. Alf informed the meeting that, yes, the club made a small loss, but this was due to a complete bar refit; yes, they have no passing trade, but they were financial enough so that they foresee everything at South Cronulla would be the same in 10 years time. Alf informed the meeting the number of nominations for office exceeds the number required. Not bad! I wonder how many clubs in the Zone can boast that they have too many members wishing to be elected to office?

The standard of play was a real eye-opener with section winners Anne Perry (Port City), and Alan McFayden (Sawtell), being most impressive. They now play off for the title of Zone Rookie 2002, and with it a place in the state final.

Zone championship double was recorded by Peter Howard and Peter Taylor when, with Westport clubmate Col Baldwin, they took the triples title. Both are members of the fours winning team. Triples runners-up were 2001 titleholders Cliff Lamberth, Keith Moore and Graeme Purvis of Nambucca Heads. lthough the Zone 14 side met with little success at the Pat Geary Inter-Zone Challenge, there were some notable individual performances. Peter believes that Zone 15 is one of the State’s most progressive bowls regions and this opinion was reflect­ ed in the fact that all senior officers were returned to office. ormer Victorian star Bruce Jewell (Bateau Bay) is the new Zone 15 Singles Champion. Jewell was in top form to defeat Avoca Beach’s Jeff Williamson 31-9 in the final played at Everglades. Bruce represented Victoria 65 times after starting bowls at 18 at Bendigo.

• A R O U N D THE ZONES BC, Bruce was a member of Soldiers Point BC for three years and represented Newcastle as a third. Dennis Baker made it a Bateau Bay quinella when he beat Ken Eyles (The Entrance) to win the President’s Reserve Singles. A relative newcomer to the game, Dennis has been playing bowls for five years and is a self employed consultant as well as being a selector at Bateau Bay. Herbert Hughes (Avoca Beach) defeated Ted Knight (Norah Head^) to win the Senior Singles Championship 31-19. ow many enthusiastic bowlers have tried in vain over many seasons to win a Pennant flag, or even reach a Pennant final? The list is many and the elusive Pennant flag is the Holy Grail of the game for most keen bowlers. Consider then the case of Wyong BC’s Peter Redman, a newcomer to the game, who has won Pennant flags in two successive years. In 2001 it was in the No.7 Grade Zone 15 Pennant, and this year the No.2 Grade flag. Peter, a Sergeant at Wyong Police Station, is a keen bowler who rolls up regularly and lis­ tens to good advice. He started playing bowls in 2000 fulfilling the wish of his late father, Jim, who had been a N o .l Pennant player at Stockton. “I started with Dad’s old Slazenger's and gradually, as I improved, opted for Drake Internationals”, he said, last year he was a mem­ ber of the Wyong Triples Champion team with Max McLure and Jim Antiss. He said the strongest point of his game is tenaciousness - “I like to practice and con­ tinually look for ways to improve”. Not too many play­ ers have won a single Pennant - rarely, two in two seasons. alekulani BC recently unfurled its N o .l State Pennant Flag amid much celebration. The go-ahead club fosters young talent and has an excellent blend of youth and experience in its top side. Another talented youthful player recently joined the club as a greenkeeper in Mark Johnston, a former NSW State Triples Champion (with Phil Flippence and Peter Frearson). ateau Bay BC has five new Board members includ­ ing new president, Richard Martin. The Board com­ prises senior vice president, Pat Cummings; vice president, Noel Post; treasurer, Michael Dietrich; direc­ tors, Peter Salter, Pam Williams, John Peek, Ray Vetter, Ken Ryan. one 15 clubs were recently circularised about a pro­ posed Pennant grading system to apply next season.

They beat Paul “Rowdy” Woods and Tom McAuley (Oak Flats BC) 25-8, but as is often the case in the game of bowls, the final score does not give a tme indication of the quality of the bowls played by all four of the finalists.

Example - only when Wayne and Rocky scored one shot on the 19th end to make the score 25 to 8 with one end to go, and no chance of them winning, did Rowdy and Tom give in. The game was played in a sportsman-like manner, and the good-sized crowd applauded all four players at the finish. Rocky Stone will be representing the lllawarra in the Singles and the Pairs at the State play-offs, and he has got a hungry look in his eyes. he Zone 16 Champion of Club Singles Champion for 2002 is Geoff McGillivray (Warilla BC), and Paul “Rowdy” Woods (Oak Flats BC) is runner-up. The final score was 31-20 and Geoff was in command through­ out the game, but could never relax because Rowdy is one of that breed of bowlers that never bend the knee, and the spectators showed their appreciation to both bowlers at the finish. As reported in the first paragraph Rowdy was in the runners-up team in the Zone 16 pairs, which indicates his consistency. our years ago, three bowlers from the lllawarra John Oliviera (Wollongong RSL BC) and John and Brian Harriott (Fairy Meadow BC) - played in the Kyle Bay BC Classic Triples, and went close but did not win.

The next three years (2000, 2001 and 2002) however told a different story, and the lllawarra trio were winners on each of those occasions, and during those three tour­ naments they played 27 x 13 end games without defeat.That has got to be a bit special! John Oliviera is still with Wollongong RSL, John Harriott is at Taren Point, and Brian Harriott is at Towradgie park, and they are planning to go back to Kyle Bay next year. ere’s something a bit different. A husband and wife are both m em ters of the same club - the husband wins the club m en’s major singles - the wife wins the club womens major singles. Husband and wife combine to win the club mixed pairs. The talented duo that pro­ duced these unusual results are Maurie Duffy and his wife, Laurie, and they are members of Windang BC. Their achievements are not unique, but they are very rare, and they deserve a great big “well done” for their efforts.

We had 10 Zones competing in this event. We have to thank the West Dubbo BC for submitting two teams to enable the field to have an even number of teams to compete.

Final point scores were as follows: Section A - Zone 15 (22), Zone 14 (20), Metro (16) and Zone 4 White (4).

Section B - Zone 2 (17), Zone 4 Green (15), Zone 5 (14), Zone 16 (12).

Finals between Zone 2 and Zone 15 were as follows: Singles - Zone 2 Jarrod Duncan def Zone 15 Andrew Gordon (32-18).

Pairs - Zone 15 Waylon and Lance Pritchard def Zone 2 Joel Martin and Todd Hughes (22-14).

Fours - Zone 2 Sarah Rumble, Christopher Holstein, Nic Twining and Michael Tate def Zone 15 Erynn Gordon, Daren Morrison, Brent Shoebridge and Robert McNabb (18-15).

The 2002 7-A-Side winning Zone was Zone 2, and the runners up were Zone 15.

This being our inaugural Zone 7-A-Side tournament, it went very well, and we feel sure that the junior bowlers who took part enjoyed themselves, and are eagerly waiting for the tournament to come around next year.

We must say thanks to the West Dubbo bowls organ­ iser, Ric Bohm, and his many helpers who made the tournament run very smoothly, and for making the junior bowls officials and the young bowlers feel very welcome at the club.

Our chairman of Selectors, Barry Salter, submitted the following comments: “The demeanour, enthusiasm, and the on and off green behaviour of everyone of the 70 competitors was as perfect as one could wish. The age range was 13 years to 18 years. One junior, Michael Tait, of Zone 2, was 18 on the final day. Chris Rosanes, of Cobar, is a beaut competitor. The young girls held their own, and our game is guaranteed to be in good hands for years to come. The coloured bowls caused a spectacle, many people had not seen them before. The greens looked after by John Ferguson were paced at an immaculate 15 seconds, with each green of the three equal to each other”.

The Zone 7-A-Side tournament was sponsored by Millers Metals, and the managing director, Mark Brooks, supplied the Zone Shield, as well as the plaques for the Zone 7-A-Side winners and runners up.

urimbah-Lisarow RSL bowlers were quick to respond to the plight of farmers affect­ ed by the State’s drought conditions.

Among those who benefited from their recent fodder drop were 45 fellow bowlers and farmers at Werris Creek.

When Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL BC treasurer Ken Hetherington came up with the idea of supporting a country town, Werris Creek was chosen because of the friendship and reciprocal competitions which had evolved with the Werris Creek Railway Institute and Town BC over the years.

Ken was supported by Rus Whitcher, Col Walker, Bernie Colwill, Bob Fletcher, Brian Braham, and many other people.

In two weeks, Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL BC members raised $7000 through an entertainment night and raffles.

They negotiated the purchase of fodder at cost and free trucking to Werris Creek.

Werris Creek farmers turned up at their local BC for the handout, and Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL bowlers were on hand to help them load their vehicles.

They distributed 60 bales of mixed hay, four tonnes of bagged corn, four tonnes of bagged wheat, four tonnes of bagged oats, and a large quantity of chaff.

The event gained widespread media coverage.

As a result of the success of the project, OurimbahLisarow RSL BC has embarked on an even bigger effort, and about 30 other bowling clubs are reported to be fol­ lowing the lead by organising fund raisers for droughtsticken farmers.

HE Australian ‘25 and under’ men’s lawn bowls team is set to play a series of Test matches against England in regional Western Australia.

Three Test matches will be played in Geraldton from October 9-11.

It is only the second time that an English ‘Under-25’ side has toured Australia and marks the fourth international ‘Under-25’ Test series between the two countries.

Australia first toured England in 1997, losing the series 21. In 1998 Australia won 2-1 in Newcastle, and in 2000 the Australian side had a successful tour of Britain, defeating both Scotland and England with 2-1 scorelines.

The Australian side for this series is Mark Casey, Todd Simmons, Mark Strochnetter, Anthony Kiepe, John Bezear and Nathan Rice.

Each Test will comprise six singles, three pairs and two triples with the six players required to play in all three disci­ plines in each Test.

Ruediger, Bezear, Strochnetter, Kiepe and Casey were all members of the side that defeated Scotland 2-1 at the Wentworthville Leagues BC last year.

The English side is David Bolt, Paul Ging, Neil McKee, Robert Paxton, Gavin Taylor and Chris Young.

The ‘25 and under’ Test series against England is spon­ sored by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association.

GLASSON W INS HIS SIXTH INDOOR TITLE TEVE Glasson continued his dominance of the Australian Indoor Singles Championship by grabbing a record sixth title in a dominant display at the Tweed Heads BC recently.

Glasson demolished second seed Ray Glasser in straight sets 7-3, 7-4, 7-2 in a virtual repeat of last year’s final.

The Sydney based professional collected his first indoor title in 1994 as a 25-year-old and has now won five of the past six events.

“1 feel confident on that rink, there is no question about that,” he said afterwards.

“1 know its characteristics and play it well.

“It was nice to win that first set that gives you a real boost and you can really go on the attack from there and take a few more chances.”

Glasson started the match strong­ ly, picking up the maximum count of four on the second end to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Glasser respond­ ed responded gamely with a three on the next end before Glasson closed out the set with a four shot margin.

In the second set, Gold Coast based Glasser led 2-1 before Glasson scored six shots over four ends to move to a 2-0 lead.

Glasson scored another count of four to open the third set and then restricted Glasser to just two singles to claim the match in one hour and 40 minutes.

The reigning Queensland pairs champion, Glasser also lost last year’s final in straight sets.

After the match Glasser described his opponent’s perform ance as “machine-like”, suggesting the Australian singles representative was almost unbeatable on the Tweed Heads carpet.

“1 felt more confident coming into this year’s final, but 1 didn’t quite come up to what 1 had done during the week,” said Glasser.

“You have got to give him credit he is just very very good.”

Glasson said he had struggled to get over the disappointment of the Commonwealth Games since

returning from Manchester where he was the victim of a controversial loss to New Zealand’s Mike Kernaghan in a quarter final.

“1 was gutted and didn’t really want to play when I came back,” he said.

“The last couple of weeks have been about getting motivated and getting back into form.

“Instead of being on a low after the Games I was keen to get back on a high.”

The victory will further boost Glasson’s ranking as the N o.l play­ er in the country and has secured him a berth in next year’s WIBC World Indoor Singles Championship in Belfast.

Glasson advanced to his seventh final by defeating fellow Australian squad member Tom Ellem in straight sets 7-0, 7-4, 7-3.

Glasser booked his final berth in a five-set semi-final marathon against

20-year-old indoor debutant Mark Casey. Thirty-six years Casey’s senior, Glasser outlasted the young­ ster 6-7, 7-4, 7-3, 0-7, 7-2 in a match that lasted three hours and 35 minutes.

Earlier, Casey had ended the bid by wildcard entrant Karen Murphy who became the first woman to play in the event.
