Harbour’s will host to be the event ever

The Park Beach Proton Open is being sponsored by Proton Cars Australia, has a total prize pool of $34,000, and the main prize is a brand-new Proton Satria hatchback valued at $15,788.

The Park Beach Proton Open will take place from July 8 to 12 and is open to any registered bowler. The first 120 fully subscribed ($50 nom­ inations) will be accepted.

Play format will be 40 players in a round robin of three games, 21 up.

Forty players (10 sections of 4) will compete on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with the 30 section winners plus the next best two per­ formed players competing on the Thursday.

This will reduce to eight sections of four, three games, 21 up and the eight section winners will contest the open draw with a quarter final 21 up knockout.

Friday’s semi-finals will start at 9am, followed by a driving contest (open to any bowler who wishes to nominate). The entry fee for this is S5 with a guaranteed prize pool of $500, plus all entry fees (winner takes all).

The final of the Park Beach Proton Open Singles will be held at 1pm and the winner will drive away in a brand-new Proton Satria vehi­ cle, which has a recommended retail price of $15,788.

Runner-up prize money is $4,000, with equal thirds $1,500 each, and losing quarter finalists receiving $750. Entries close June 14.

The 2002 Membership Media Campaign supports all bowling clubs in NSW with their efforts to increase bowling membership.

Once again, these efforts are reinforcing the theme to the gen­ eral public of NSW that “Lawn the Bowls is a fun sport”, and one which “caters for all age groups”.

The Macquarie Network 2GB / 2CH 30 second commercial will commence April 8, and conclude May 30, as stage 1 of the project.

ueensland faced a tough assignment when it sought to retain the ilian Sides Championship title at the Holdfast Bay BC in Adelaide last month.

Defending the coveted Alley Shield has always proven difficult, with Victoria the last state to achieve the feat in 1997.

In Queensland’s favour was the fact that it took a relatively settled side into the event after making just four changes to last year’s winning line-up. Importantly, the skips had

not changed, with Australian N o.l Kelvin Kerkow, Charlie Hayes, Brian Baldwin and Mark Casey hav­ ing ultimate responsibility for the state’s performance.

Sixteen representatives from every state and territory contested this year’s Australian Sides Championship.

Significantly, this event was the last at which the country’s top play­ ers could press for selection in the 2002 Commonwealth games side.

AUSTRALIA KEEN TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST ENGLAND h e Australian lawn bowls side will be hoping to build som e momentum going into this year’s Commonwealth Games, begin­ ning with a series victory over England when the two nations clash in three Tests in April.

After starting the year with a series loss to New Zealand - its third in as many years - the side is des­ perate to regain the formula that saw it rack-up numerous wins on the international stage in 2000 and 2001.

England is never an easy proposi­ tion, however, and since the annual Test Series began in 1998, the results have been split. England won the first two before Australia hit back with victories in 2000 and 2001.

Australia’s national selectors have put their faith in the same trio that scored a 2-1 result last year, in Steve Glasson, Adam Jeffery and veteran Rex Johnston.

The three Tests will be played on April 9, 10 and 11 at the Tweed Heads EC ’s indoor stadium.

While the Australian line-up is set­ tled, England has a new-look side comprising Mervyn King, David Holt and Stephen Fisher.

One of the UK’s leading bowlers.

King played a prominent role in England’s First Test victory last year and is the only member of the 2001 side to retain his place.

The test series will be played under an international three-man-aside format with singles, pairs and triples mbbers played in each Test.

Each player is required to fill the sin­ gles role in one of the three Test matches.

In the opening test, Jeffery will play singles and Glasson will lead for Johnston in the pairs. The triples order is Glasson, Jeffery, Johnston.

The three Test matches will be telecast nationally on the ABC and Foxsports with the ABC’s telecast commencing on Saturday May 11 with action from the pairs clash in the opening Test.

The ABC’s coverage of the series will continue every Saturday through to July 6 (check local guides for details).

Posing the biggest threat to Queensland’s chances of consecu­ tive Australian Sides Championship titles was NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

Qnce again, NSW boasted a for­ midable line-up that included eight players who were either current or former Australian representatives at the ‘open’ level.

In 2000, NSW swept all before it, winning all seven rounds to become the first side to score a clean-sweep since 1995. Favoured to take the Shield again last year, NSW suffered costly early losses that saw it finish level on points with Queensland, but lose the title on rink wins.

Four members of the NSW side Steve Glasson, Adam Jeffery, Rex Johnston and Brett Duprez - were part of the five-man Australian side that won the world title in 2000.

Former Australian players, Cameron Curtis, Steve Anderson, Kevin Walsh and Sam Laguzza were also in the line-up.

However, history was shown that individual reputations count for little at the Australian Sides Championship, with consistent teamwork over four days of intense competition proving the key to securing the Alley Shield.

Victoria stands as testimony to that theory, having built a strong reputation in team events in recent years. Earlier this year, Victoria won back-to-back BCiB Australian SuperLeague titles, and in 2001 fin­ ished third at the Australian Sides Championship.

Western Australia also had claims to the title, with the best record of any state in the 9 0 ’s having won four times - in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1999.

After finishing fourth in 2001 (and beating Queensland in the penultimate round). South Australia will be hoping that the home-green advantage can help it secure its first Alley Shield since 1988.

The AWBC notified NSWWBA on November 16 that the resigna­ tion was accepted immediately, and in fact, NSW was therefore disaffili­ ated.

This action severed any chance of compromise.

We hope that at future BA Inc meetings a solution may be found, as bowls as both a sport and frater­ nal organisation is the loser under the present situation.

Firstly, there is no dispute between the Royal and Bowls Australia Inc.

The RNSWBA Board on February 28 unanimously voted to support our women, as NSW must not be divided. The men were not prepared to join a unified body with­ out our women.

Our concerns are based upon the long-term ramifications of unifica­ tion (if the current proposals go ahead), and the treatm ent our women’s organisation has received from the WBA/AWBC. Our women received a copy of the new Constitution of the; AWBC — which was not acceptable to the NSW W om en’s Bowling Association (NSWWBA) — with a notice that it would be voted on at the January meeting of the AWBC. It was received at a time when the NSW women were in recess over the Christmas period, with no Council meetings scheduled.

The NSWWBA on November 13 gave the constitutionally required six m onths notice of intention to resign, which would have fallen due on May 13, giving plenty of time for

It was resolved that there should be no negotiations with BA Inc con­ cerning national unification, as a unified body was not a viable option.

The Board expressed grave con­ cern for the future of lawn bowls in Australia.

These decisions were fully endorsed by Delegates at the November and February meetings of the RNSWBA. The Board of the RNSWBA was of the opinion that the WBA/AWBC had shown no respect for NSW women or their constitu­ tional rights, and in particular the damage being caused to smaller clubs by their actions.

In the circular I also stressed the point that the Board believes NSW must always stay united. With a combined total of more than 100,000 bowlers (men and women) we will survive the present problems with the national bodies, and the result will be much stronger ties between our relevant State organi­ sations.

F U N D R A IS IN G S U C C E S S FOR R O D S Y K E S AT K EN SIN G TO N UNDAY, March 10, saw a large gathering at Kensington BC to raise funds for Rodney Sykes. The day was a great success, rais­ ing $ 1 8 ,0 0 0 , which was well beyond even the most opti­ mistic hopes.

Rod, now 29, was the greenkeeper at Kensington BC for 12 months, and for some years prior, the greenkeeper for Coogee BC. Twelve months ago. Rod was severely injured when struck by a car. Among other injuries. Rod sus­ tained traumatic brain damage which has led to a long term disabil­ ity.

Rod , is struggling to get out of a wheelchair, and is most unlikely to be able to work again.

A large number of personal dona­ tions were received, and great sup­ port came from bowling clubs and other sporting clubs in the area, and as far as St Johns Park.

Local businesses provided direct donations and many prizes for raf­ fles.

The day kicked off with more than 100 bowlers filling both greens.

Rodney, and many greenkeepers supported the day.

Following lunch, an afternoon of raffles and fun was organised.

Excluding roll-ups and dead ends, each bowler plays two bowls, making a total of 112 bowls being picked up and deliv­ ered each end, i.e., a total of 2,800 bowls over the 25 ends.

If each bowl weighs approxi­ mately 3 lbs, or 1.36 kg, the total weight of bowls picked up and delivered during the game would be approximately 8,400 lbs, or about 3 tons 15 cwt, or 3,808 kg.

With 2,800 bowls being deliv­ ered, each to a distance of approx­ imately 90 feet, or 27.43 metres, the total distance the bowls trav­ elled would be 252,000 feet, just under 47.8 miles, or 78 kms.

If the length of the green is 120 feet, or 36.57 metres, each player would have walked a total of 1,000 yards, making a total, for the 56 players, of 56,000 yards, about 31.75 miles, or 51.20 kms, i.e., not including chasing wrong biases, and visits to the bar.

Not exact, but enlightening to those who consider that there is not much exercise in playing the game of lawn bowls.

Rod was associated with Easts Rugby League and volunteered as a strapper for the club. The day was fortunate to have a number of stars attend, including Laurie Daley (Canberra and Australia), Brad Clyde (Canberra and Australia), Nathan Brown (St G eorge/ Illawarra), Noah Sete and Paul McNicholas, from Souths, and Graham Murray (former Easts coach).

The racing fraternity was repre­ sented by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Ray Selkrig.

Signed Easts jumpers and a framed signed Laurie Daley jumper were keenly contested at auction.

Rod and his father, Terry, made a big effort to attend, coming from their home town of Junee, where Rod began his association with Laurie Daley in their younger years.

R A Y T O Z E R - R N S W B A S P O R T S A D M IN IS T R A T O R “A Game for All Ages” Australian Representation NSW Players Australia will play England in a three Test Series during April - on Tuesday 9th - Thursday 11th at Tweed Heads BC. The three man side is all from NSW - Steve Glasson, Rex Johnston and Adam Jeffery. This series will be one of the ABC TV Lawn Bowls one hour transmissions during 2002.

The English Test side is Mervyn King, Stephen Fisher and David Holt. Holt is currently playing for The Hills Club in the RNSWBA 2002 Premier League.

Also Steve Glasson will represent Australia at the World Indoor Bowls Council (WIBC) televised singles championship to be held in Belfast from April 17-21 inclusive.

We wish our representative play­ ers every success and congratulate them on their Australian National selection.

Keno Player of the Series Award The NSW player of the recent 5A-Side Championships was Rex Johnston. Our Keno Hi-Jackers NSW State side performed most creditably, losing to defending champions Victoria in a tense final 2 wins (+2) to 2 wins.

Congratulations to Johnston, who received the award from the Keno representative at Moama.

Throughout 2002, a “Player of the Series” award is being spon­ sored by Keno.

The RNSWBA Elite Premier League competition is rapidly devel­ oping and fulfilling the Association’s objective to market and promote the game to the NSW general pub­ lic to create improved interest and following of our great sport.

Within this development at the elite level, it is clearly apparent that the younger men are playing an increasingly dominant role.

Notwithstanding this, there are many examples of talented, experi­ enced, fit and mature bowlers play­ ing a most significant role for their respective clubs.

For example, Warilla’s Scottish International, Willie Wood, has returned to Australia for his second season of Premier League. Willie, like all top class champion sports­ men, sets a fine example on and off the green. At 63 years of age.

Wood is a credit to himself and has enhanced the Illawarra club by his contribution.

At Birrong, 65 year old Australian (Senior) representative Don Peoples cuts a fine figure to complement his love of the game and prowess on the green. His con­ tribution to the youthful Birrong side is significant.

Therefore, age is not always the essential, be it young or mature.

Fitness, love of the game and ability all play their part.

“Lawn bowls is indeed a game for all ages”, played by younger people as well as mature age groups.

During the 2002 Australian Sides Championships in Adelaide, two NSW players notched up their 300th Test Match appearance for their State.

Rex Johnston (St Johns Park) and Sam Laguzza (Charlestown) reached this fabulous milestone of their respective representative careers in fine style.

Johnston and Laguzza have played an integral part in the suc­ cess of the Keno Hi-Jackers NSW State side. Both, of course, have represented Australia, with Rex Johnston moving close to 400 Test appearances for his country.

We congratulate both players on their outstanding records.

Level 1 Coaching Applications It is fantastic news to be advised by the chairman of the State Coaching Committee, Macka Jensen, that over 135 responses have been received from registered players who wish to become accred­ ited Level 1 Coaches and assist their clubs. h e importance of club membership - and espe­ cially the recruitment of new bowlers - was recently highlighted by our State President, Terry Murphy.

In a letter to State Councillors, he urged them to encourage their Zone administrations to form a “M em bership” C om m ittee in every District and in each individ­ ual club.

Terry said that everyone was aware of th e im portance of sub­ com m ittees (such as Um pires, Coaching, Match, Greens etc) to the sport.

But, he posed the question: “If we do not have members, what can these comm ittees do?”

His letter also stressed the con­ tribution m ade by w om en to bowls, and how they had been right to the forefront in most of the successful recruitment days.

Terry said that once established, th e M em bership C om m ittee should be responsible for all forms of club membership.

In addition to its main task of recruitm ent, the comm ittee could follow up m em bers who had not been to the club for som e time (a courtesy phone call may be just the thing needed, and help the secretary chase up m em bers who might only need a little reminder to pay their annual fees).

His timely m essage - and the recom m endation to form M embership Com m ittees - under­ scores the im portance of this sub­ ject to bowls and bowlers.

More m em bers are essential to the ongoing viability of our great sport and to its continuing growth in future years.

Every current m em ber can play a part in the program to recruit newcom ers and assist with their assimilation into our ranks.

You can also support your club in the establishm ent of a M embership Com m ittee, if one is not already in existence.

Tuross Head The bowlers at Tuross Head are benefiting from extensive research undertaken as part of their m em ­ bership recruitment program.

For exam ple, the club has responded to requests for the introduction of a “different” for­ m at on Sundays - to attract poten­ tial bowlers in a social situation.

The research has fostered a new, flexible approach at the club.

Publicity officer W arren Kirton reports th at the president in 2 0 0 0 , John Olliver, conducted a recruitment drive for new m em ­ bers, which attracted 28 people, and eight of these are now playing members of the club.

Richard Love was elected as president at the Annual Meeting last year, and immediately set up the survey of members to find out their views.

This is w here the new Sunday format emerged.

Peter White, a newcomer to Tuross Head, and a form er presi­ dent of Forbes BC, offered to run the program .

Coaches John Olliver and Des Parbery agreed to attend and offer advice and follow up with individ­ ual coaching where necessary.

At the end of last year, an aver­ age of 35 people were attending each Sunday and the interest is still growing.

The program is self-funding, with attendees paying a small fee and supporting a raffle held in conjunction with a barbecue lunch.

Both the m en’s and w om en’s clubs have benefited from an increase in membership.

Publicity officer W arren Kirton adds that for the first time in sev­ eral years, Tuross Head is fielding three pennant sides this year many of the players being from the ranks of the new bowlers.

“We have learnt that fo r bowls to develop at our club, we have to adjust traditional thinking

and strict adherence to old rules and procedures, while m aintain­ ing certain standards,” he said.

“We believe the old s\;stem was actually discouraging new bowlers, and m uch m ore needs to be done to develop a more positive, inclusive culture. ”

Artarmon A rtarm on B&RC has conducted its first recm itm ent program with 19 prospects turning up on the open days.

“Overall, we came to the con­ clusion of a successful effort,” reports secretary Tom Ash. “We followed generally the con­ cepts of the RNSWBA’s “How to Recruit Successfully” program ,” he added.

“The main visual publicity was achieved by a display of posters in shops and at the railway station.

These posters featured photos of club m em bers in action, their ages ranging from 15 years and upwards.

They included family groups and ethnic groups at the club, wearing both uniform and casual attire. The posters were highly coloured and eye-catching.”

He continued: “Our presenta­ tion in the Artarm on shopping centre was our major success, as we had personal contact with prospects.

“Twelve people were rostered to talk with people in the shops and on the street. An information desk was set up on the Village Green featuring a display board, umbrellas and balloons.”

Tom Ash added: “A letterbox drop of flyers advertised the open days. A nother flyer invited the public to visit the club at other times and watch the bowlers in action, and share in the hospitality with mem bers at the club.”

As part of the club’s recruitment efforts, it conducts a schools pro­ gram. Last year this involved 24 students from the local primary school, and is continuing this year.

A d a ilb o c c Pennant season comment SIR: I look forward to reading my "Bowls Alive" m ag­ azine each month, and I wish to comment on the pen­ nant season.

I played golf for some years and was lucky enough to play A Grade pennants. I then had a shoulder prob­ lem and couldn't play golf again, so a mate of mine took me to his bowling club, and after a few roll-ups, I fell in love w ith the game.

That was about seven years ago.

My point is, golf clubs have a lot more members than bowling clubs, but during the pennant season the don't have D, E, F and G grades. They only have A ,' and C. I can't believe we have so many grades. Most bowl­ ing clubs can only field one or two sides, so they should be in one of the three grades.

This will also stop the stupid travelling we have to do each year. We always pass a dozen clubs to get to a club that is in our grade.

Some m ight say what about the rest of us that don't make the top three grades. Get out there and practise until you are good enough.

I practised all the time at golf and I roll up every chance I get, and this year I was selected in the N o.l ennant side at Wests Leagues. If I w ant to stay there, I ave to play well and practise hard.

Junior Trans Tasman Bowls Australia and Women’s Bowls Australia are staging a Junior Trans Tasman Series for Under 18’s at the completion of the National Junior Championships at Moama September 30th - October 4th.

Each side will comprise four players, male singles, female singles, mixed pairs plus male and female man­ ager.

The New Zealanders are scheduled to arrive in Melbourne on Friday, October 4.

Changing format

SIR: I refer to two recent amendments to the laws of the SIR: A num ber of years ago I advocated changing the format of permants to showcase all the different forms game of bowls, and conditions of play for 2002.

The first relates to COP 2.14, the num ber of bowls in our game . . . namely singles, pairs, triples and fours.

Though it was radical at the time, I notice that the used in triples events reduce from 3 to 2 per player, and COP 2.29, increasing the num ber of ends from 21 to 31. idea seems to be catching on from the various letters to I fail to see how walking up the green an extra 10 you over the last couple of years.

I urge the members to embrace the concept and times, delivering your bovds, the directors measuring and declaring the head, and possibly calling the allow us to get away from the fours-only format.

During the last year, the concept of two bowl triples um pire to determ ine the head, then kicking the bowls back an extra 10 times is going to be quicker and save seems to be embraced by the bowling fraternity . . . time, than delivering a total or six bowls more in the 21 why I don't know.

It seems to me that the reason that is given . . . to ends game.

The bulletin 27/01 also quoted examples of games speed up the game, cannot be argued considering you taking 4 hours 10 minutes, and 4 hours 40 m inutes to increase the ends to 31, thereby jMaying (bar a few) the play. If any game that I was um piring took that long, I same num ber of bowls.

AN OPEN FORUM FOR READERS McWilliam and a group of dedicated volunteers who hand carted water to the green.

Today, the club has three greens and 95 men and 55 women members.

Tuross is fielding three pennant sides this year for the first time in several years, and many of the players are new bowlers. Every Saturday we have 40 bowlers playing or acting as managers.

Tuross has won the pennant for the District No.4 grade, and in 2000 and 2002 had Ted Barlow and John Wagstaff as rurmer up in the district champion of champion singles. In 2001, Tina Hayward reached the last eight of the State singles, losing narrowly to Karen Murphy.

I am pleased to say, as a member of Turram urra and a m em ber of one of those teams, one Turram urra team scored a three, and the other a one!

That gave us a 5X - X win. It could have been so dif­ ferent.

A talking point SIR: Recently at Brunswick Heads BC the first round of the m ajor singles m atched a game betw een Bob McClelland and his 14 year old grandson, Keean McClelland.

The result will be talked about at family get togethers for years to come, or at least until a rematch.

Keean has also been selected to represent Tweed Byron in its annual m atch against the Gold Coast, giv­ ing him the honour of being the first junior from our club to be selected for the district.

AN OPEN FORUM FOR REAOERS Successful junior event

SIR: As part of the junior coaching program, the Albury and District junior bowls co-ordinator, John Allitt, organised a High School triples day in his home town of Culcaim on Wednesday March 13.

Twelve team s represented Billabong High (Culcairn), M urray H igh (Albury), Albury High, Finley, Kooringal, Kooringal (Wagga).

Three games of 13 ends resulted in the winners being the Kooringal team of C. Dries, K. Blundell, M. Bowen, from Albury High team of C. Trainor, M. Brower, J. Mackie.

Awards for seven "resting touchers" indicated the competitor's ability. Albury and District president, Frank Tracey, attended and w ould have been pleased w ith the enthusiasm and ability shown by the 28 boys and eight girls.

Co-ordinator John Allitt is now hopeful of conduct­ ing a similar junior event among NSW representatives, depending on response from invitations.

He was congratulated for organising such a success­ ful day in endeavouring to encourage youth towards lawn bowling.

Moving the goal posts SIR: Once again bureaucracy is continuing to flow on wifhout consulting the masses in the grand old game of bowls.

It is a little different in Zone 11, as we are part of an aging population, mostly in excess of 70 years with the odd exception. Business people and middle manage­ ment are fighting to stay in their jobs until retirement, whereby they cannot or dare not take a day off during the week for fear of losing their jobs.

Then, w hen it comes to the weekend, their wife and children have prior claims to their spare time.

W hen the alterations to District Triples came in the mail, it was read out to some 60 Diamond Bay bowlers.

Discussions took place at length and voted upon.

They voted 98% in favour to stay with the old rules, and reading between the lines, will not be entering any triples event beyond Club Championships.

We find that w ith great difficulties like other clubs to form up sufficient self selected teams on our Monday and Wednesday competitions, we have now reverted to handicapping each player, by a special bowls com­ mittee after each Major and M inor Singles Championship, which will last for 12 months.

This method has m ade each game m uch more inter­ esting and the winning margins are m uch closer, there­ by giving all teams a chance to occasionally win a game, and remaining w ith each bowling day rather than say to themselves why come, as I always get beat­ en.

Those clubs w ith larger and more competitive mem­ bers are able to divide their members according to their playing abilities into two or more divisions.

FORMER RNSWBA Treasurer Robert (Bob) Burns, died on February 23, following a period of illness.

His funeral was held at Rookwood Crematorium.

Bob was a member of Earlwood Bradwell Park ExServicemen’s BC, where he held many positions over the years.

Born in 1926, he was an alternate delegate to Sydney/ Bankstown DBA at the time of his death.

Bob held a wide range of administrative positions in Club, District, Zone and State levels since joining the bowling frater­ nity in 1977.

What happens when you are in the middle of a match and you are unable to continue?

The heat may be affecting you, you may be feeling ill or you may have received a message requiring your urgent attendance elsewhere. What can you do? What can your team do?

In the past, the Laws and RNSWBA Conditions of Play gave you and your team very few options. If an eligible substitute was not available then forfei­ ture of the match may have ensued.

This is no longer the case. Bowls Australia and The Australian Women’s Bowls Council recently expanded Law 55 (Leaving the green) to give us a num­ ber of other alternatives. The Law now reads:

55 LEAVING THE GREEN

(i) Unless otherwise provided for in this Law no player shall be allowed to delay play by leaving the green, without the consent of the oppo­ nent or opposing team and then only for a period of no more than ten minutes. (ii) Consent to leave the green shall not be unreasonably withheld by the opponent or opposing team and the umpire shall be the sole judge of whether consent has been unreasonably withheld (iii) Contravention of sub-law (i) shall entitle the opponent or opposing team to claim the game. (iv) If during the course of a side game or a team game a player is unable to continue owing to illness or other reasonable cause the player may leave the green and; (a) in a side game the side may continue to play with one team playing one player short (b) in a team game the team may continue to play with the team playing one player short, or; (c) the player’s place may be filled by a substitute. (v) The umpire shall be the sole judge of ‘reasonable cause’. (vi) In the absence of reasonable cause the opponent or opposing team shall be entitled to claim the game. (vii) If a player leaves the green in accordance with any part of Law 55 (iv) and is physically able and still eligible to rejoin the game before the beginning of the last end then either: (a) the player may rejoin the game in which case provisions of Law 39 B (iii) shall apply whether or not a substitute has filled that play­ er’s position during the period of the player’s absence from the green; or (b) the game may continue with the team playing one person short.

National Umpires, please take note.

Match Committee and other club offi­ cials probably have similar responsibili­ ties.

A plea from Les Archbold and Bruce Hawkins Les registers all the newly qualified umpires in New South Wales. Bruce looks after all reaccreditations. It should be a straightforward job, but too often critical data is omitted from or is erro­ neously shown on incoming registration forms. This means that either Les and Bruce spend a lot of their time on the phone chasing up the outstanding requirements, or that the umpires have to wait a few weeks longer for their badge and/or certificate whilst other­ wise unnecessary letters go back and forth between District and the RNSW­ BA. .

Candidates, umpires. District Panel Officials, please take care with the paperwork. It should be easy enough.

The forms are very simple. In particu­ lar, please ensure that you include each umpire’s RNSWBA registration number and the name of his Club and District.

Without these, Les and Bruce cannot issue a badge or certificate. The RNSW­ BA number is more than critical, it is paramount. If Les and Bruce cannot identify the person in the RNSWBA database, they cannot even start their processes.

He returns nine minutes later to find the opposition claiming the game. Can they do this?

No, if his absence did not delay play. Yes, if his absence has delayed play. Since he left without the con­ sent of his opponent there is no grace period. [Law 55J If it was the first time the player had absented himself then it is unlikely that the claim would be upheld. The umpire would find out the circum­ stances behind the absence and, if appropriate, warn the player of the risk if his actions are repeated.

If the player had been in the bar watching a race on TV, and he did so again later, then he could be in big trouble.

Extracts from the National Bowls Coaching Manual

Delivery technique for the jack and the bowl The basis for all jack and/or bowl delivery is the pendulum action of the arm with an even and continuous forward motion.

There should always be an easy relaxed rhythm in the delivery, with the palm of the hand following the bowl in a natural follow through.

Eyes should be fixed on an aiming point at a convenient distance along the aiming line.

As the delivery arm reaches the vertical, the player steps forward taking a normal walking step with the lead foot. The non bowling hand moves towards its resting place on the thigh or knee. Having the fore­ arm on the knee or thigh, alters the squaring of the shoulders. The rear knee is tucked in behind the heel of the lead foot. Make sure the shoul­ ders remain square to the line of the delivery.

In timing, the swing of the arm is in relation to the step.

The backswing should be com­ plete as the heel of the lead foot contacts the ground. As the foot is anchored, the forward movement of the arm has commenced. Ninety percent of the body weight should be on the front foot before the bowl is released. Delivery must be made 15 to 20cm forward of and close to the side of the front foot along the line of delivery.

There must be a good follow through and the player should stay down until the jack/bowl has trav­ elled well along the aiming line, at the same time watching until it comes to rest. This assists the play-

The State Coaching Committee er in reading the pace of the green, and will assist the sub-conscious to make any necessary correction for the next delivery. A new player can gain confidence by delivering a jack consistently and correctly before delivering a bowl.

The delivering of the jack for a beginner is very important in order to give some idea of weight. Using at least six jacks, the player should deliver these to a constant length.

The coach should be able to pick a length that will allow the player to deliver a jack long enough on a slow green, and not lose it on a fast green.

When the player can deliver these consistently to a length, delivery of the bowl can more easily be taught, it is important however, to allow the player to deliver the bowls up and down the green before the first one hour lesson is completed, even if the jacks are not being rolled consistent­ ly-

The Backswing Too many players fail to realise the importance of the backswing in delivery. It would be in order to say that at least 60% of players take the bowl back instead of allowing the weight of the bowl to take the arm back. Most players who have a problem with the aiming line and weight will show great improvement once they have mastered the backswing in this way.

The back leg bent like this allows the player to keep the eyes focused on the aiming point. The player should stay in this position until the jack or bowl has travelled well down the green.

The Normal Step Some players do not know what a normal walking step is. Ask the player to walk along the green and if right handed, to stop when the left foot is in the forward position. From this position, ask the player to bend both legs to a position ready to play a bowl.

This demonstrates the length of step required.

Freeze frame analysis of video­ taped actions of different players under identical conditions typically show great differences in the eleva­ tion each gives a bowl in the set up and also at the end of the backswing. The reason for this is that each player’s gravity force com­ pares with muscular force to varying degrees. Players who use relatively more muscular force tend to have a compact action sometimes called pushing.

Other features of recommended delivery technique are: The opposite arm moves towards a steadying position on the thigh or knee of the front leg.

The step begins when the bowl­ ing arm passes through the vertical in the back swing.

The lead foot advances directly forward towards the aiming point.

Should the lead foot ground any­ where near the delivery line, the base of support becomes too nar­ row and sideways instability is likely.

The knee of the trailing leg should drop to a position near the heel of the lead foot.

The bowling arm should brush close to the side during the swing.

The hand releases the bowl once it is past the front foot.

Players should correct technique problems during practice sessions. If difficulty is encountered they should be encouraged to seek the advice of an accredited coach.

Taylor Bowls makes the master bowl against which all bowls of all makes are tested for correct bias.

Taylor are also popular in interna­ tional competition.

The Taylor team of high profile champions is lead by world No. 1 David Gourlay, and includes world No. 2 Alex Marshall, world outdoor champion Jeremy Henry, Steve Glasson No.2 outdoors, and a host of other leading players, many of whom are in Sydney at present for the Premier League.

The semi-finals were a lot closer, with Duncan and Parker scoring 4 shots on the last end to edge out defending titleholders, Joel Martin (Dora Creek Workers) and Todd Hughes (Merewether) 21-20. Defending champions, Boolaroo, were defeated by the narrowest of margins, one shot, 44-45, by the improv­ ing Soldiers Point side in the quarter-final. In other quar­ ter-final matches, Beresfield N o.l Grade Pennant side downed Terrigal 50-43, Beresfield’s Premier League side thumped Waratah 71-30 and East Cessnock recorded an impressive 51-40 victory over Raymond Terrace. The semi-finals were both close hard fought affairs. Beresfield’s N o.l Grade Pennant side defeated Soldiers Point 57-53, despite winning on only one of the three rinks. The quartet of John Hersee, Tex Morton, Col Byron and Frank Leslie setting up the vic­ tory with an impressive 20-13 win over Beau Wallington. Beresfield’s Premier League side made it an all-Beresfield final when they beat East Cessnock 54-48.

As was to be expected, the Beresfield Premier League side proved too strong for the Beresfield N o .l Grade Pennant side, winning the final by 23 shots, 63-40. The Beresfield Pennant side led early, but the experience and talent of the Premier League side proved too strong in the latter stages of the match. The Premier League side won on two of the three rinks, with Mick Beesley’s 28-10 win over Tony Stephenson proving decisive. he annual clash between the Newcastle and Hunter executive and sub-committees was played for the T first time indoors at East Cessnock BC. The Newcastle side handled the outstanding indoor conditions better than their Hunter counterparts, recording a convincing 95-48 victory. The successful Newcastle skippers were Les Parrott, Terry Murphy, John Smith and Ralph Campbell. It was a most enjoyable and friendly night of bowls, with many old acquaintances being renewed.

Emerging bowler Nathan Wise skipped his team to victory in the minor fours final with the help of Sandy Spence, Carl Burgess and Ray Shoesmith. Inverell East bowler, Kim Greentree was runner up in the Gwydir District Singles in 1991 and 1994. Players came from Bendemeer, Walcha, Uralla, Guyra, Armidale City and Armidale Ex-Services. The weather was kind and some excellent bowls were played. Junior Jay Porter, teamed with his mother, Kim, both of whom have not been playing long, and who did a marvellous job to reach the quarter final, only to be beaten by District Champions Warwick Morris and Dora Maloney.The semi finals saw Brian Battersby and Shirley Kelly defeat Warwick Morris and Dora Maloney, while Wally Miller and Nola Wilson (Armidale City) were beaten by Keith Reynolds and new bowler, Lorraine McLennan (Armidale Ex-Services). In the final, Brian Battersby (Armidale Ex-Services) and Shirley Kelly proved to be too strong for Keith and Lorraine. Brian Battersby certainly knows how to pick his partners, as Shirley Kelly, new to Armidale from South Australia, certainly has lost none of her skills since playing for Australia many years ago. est Tamworth BC has conducted the “City of Lights” Singles from March 4 to 7. The carnival was officially opened by president of the RNSWBA, Terry Murphy, who was accompanied by State Councillor, Bruce Baker, from Boggabri. Carnival organiser. Bob Hennessy, stated that as in previous years, he had endeavoured to invite as strong a field as possible from many highly rated bowlers from near and far. In an all-Forbes final, Don was successful over Troy Clarke, Dave Button and Bruce Williams. t Parkes BC Don with Dave Button, John Matters and Bruce Asimus took out the final of the District Fours against Parkes combination of Ray Jones, Col Mudie, Graham Barby and Col Hayward. It really looks as if we will see more of Don and his teammates in upcoming events. he Zone pennant competition for grades one and two has resulted in some good clashes in all match­ es. In grade 2, Parkes had a couple of tough and close wins at home, but Coonabarabran proved too strong at home running out comfortable winners 6 /0 on each occasion. And so this division has now been finalised after the month of February, which means that it will be a bit of a wait for the state finals for the boys from the Western Slopes. But until this zone can come up with a better formula, then these pennant seasons for grades one, two and three are all over prior to Easter. he Far Western District has completed its annual fours championships for 2002 with the West Dubbo BC not only dominating nomination numbers, but also providing the finajists as well. On a pretty quick surface " ■’ at Narromine BC, it was the team of Ted' Cassidy, Henry Gordon, Joshua Andriske and skip David Ferguson who triumphed over Craig Biles, Harold Giddings, Raymond Holmes and Dick Jeffries by the barest margin. This win was the first “major” for Joshua, who adds this crown to an impressive resume of wins in 2000 and 2001, which includes a State Presidents Singles and a host of tournament wins in the last couple of seasons. For Ted and Henry it made a pleasant change from directing the traffic to simply draw the shot and let the young guns look after proceedings.

N FEBRUARY 2 in very hot and humid con­ ditions, Canowindra conducted their suc­ O cessful anniversary triples.

Contested by 24 teams from around the districts, the Blayney team consisting of Alan Nunn, Dave Eaves and Eric Parker, were eventual winners, with the composite team of Neville Townsend, from Bathurst, and Canowindra boys Phil and Paul Britt, were a close run­ ners-up. On Sunday, the memorial Ron Worboys Pairs were contested by a capacity field of 26 teams, and with Ron’s son Tubby in attendance, a tribute to Ron’s mem­ ory. Manildra team of Ned Kurta and Reg Hughes was the day’s winner, with Alf Riley and Ray Parker, from Eugowra, runners-up. President Peter Townsend said the support of local bowlers and the town’s business houses were the formula for the continuing success of this important event. layney was not so fortunate with their triples tour­ nament scheduled for February 19-21 washed out.

The club had better luck with their annual “Cleanaway” sponsored Vietnam Veterans bowls afternoon on February 22 when 60 bowlers raised a total of $2,150 for the Vets. Organiser John O ’Dea and the Vets thanked the club for their hospitality on the day, which brings Blayney’s total of over $5,000 raised for various charities. ampbelltown City put on a Fundraising day for the local fire service. Two local fire service branches ben­ efited to the tune of $1,000 each. Captain Mario Burzynski, of Lynwood Park Station, and Captain Harding, from Wedderburn Station, were very grateful for the generosity of the bowling fraternity of Campbelltown. Board chairman, Alan Dawson, when presenting the cheques, was quick to point out all bowlers in NSW were very appreciative of the efforts of the volunteer fire fighters. President Colin Appleby thanked the “Greyshirts”, who were the 15 cricketers that enjoyed their first game of bowls on the day. Over a ten day period, they hosted 87 travelling bowlers from North Queensland districts (Cairns, Townsville and surrounds).

They then had a coach load from their sister City in Japan, and a group of students from China, all enjoying a social game of bowls with lots of giggles and good fun.

Zone 7 won well on the Saturday, but after a change in teams on the Sunday, Zone 16 used their greater experience to win by 31 shots up over the two days.

The only club team to win each of their games was MiltonAllladulla in Zone 7. The juniors were in a simi­ lar situation, and Zone 7 lost by only 11 shots over the two days. he Far South Coast District fours have been com­ pleted, with the semi-finals being fought out by Candello/Kameruka, Tathra Beach, Eden Fishermans’ and Tura Beach. The Eden team of Rex Ford, Tom Love, Brian Fletcher (sub for Eric Maddern) and Warren Love were the victors over the Tura Beach team 26-20, and the Candello/Kameruka team of Jack Hobbs, Col Blacka, Reg Lennon and Phil Burns defeated the Tathra Beach team 18-14. In the final, Warren Love and his team outdid Phil Burns 30-16. n outstanding junior bowler in the Central South Coast District is Richard Smith. He has played since 1997, and has risen through the ranks of junior bowls at Braidwood club, where he has won the club major pairs and fours, as well as going to Mudgee and winning their invitation pairs. He has represented the CSCD in pennants, and has been selected in the NSW Junior Development Squad, and also in the NSW Junior Academy Squad of 12. On Australia Day he was pre­ sented with the Tallaganda Shire outstanding sports per­ son of the year award. He is now a member of the Batemans Bay club, where he will also have good prospects in bowls. uross Head club has had good success it its recruit­ ment program. They are also appreciating the influx of experienced bowlers, from around the District, who are joining the club which is now going ahead very well. here have been many excellent singles champi­ onships played, but the final of the Batemans Bay major singles was so superb that some of the “top” bowlers in the State would have been jealous. One of our junior bowlers, Chris Macauley, 17 years old, con­ tested the title against Jack Edwards a senior player.

There was very little difference in the scores for the majority of the game, until Jack scored a four and then took out four o f the next five ends, and won by 31-23.

Top marks to both players. here is great cause for concern in the CSC District over the debacle with womens bowls. Clubs have already had two groups of travelling bowlers cancel their trips, as well as about 100 visitors from Victoria and Canberra cancelling their visitations to the many winter carnivals due to be held soon. This is because women from interstate are scared about what could happen to them back home if it were known that they played in NSW. As well as the clubs suffering losses, so will the accommodation businesses, who are club sponsors.

Forck and Diffey have reached the semi-finals four times before this year, defeating fellow Henty team Mick Broughan and Roger Meyer 19-14 in the final. There was a touch of irony because Forck teamed with Meyer some years ago and they twice reached the semi-finals.

The victory made a double for the Henty club. A team skipped by Forck and including Diffey and Broughan won the district fours. It is the first time since the 1970’s that Henty teams have been successful in district events.

The State president’s pairs was won 17-15 by Commercial Club’s Pat Parnell and Sam Trethowan from Oaklands’ Peter Bonat and John Daniher. team from Young skipped by Geoff Holt has won the South West District fours. Holt’s team of lead Alex Watson, Cliff Traynor and Bob Taylor won their semi-final 24-21 against Quandialla’s Eddie Curran, Tony Edgerton, Graham Edgerton and John Reeves.

Another Young team of Maurie Anderson, Jock Rogerson, Mick McNamara and George Somerville won their semi-final 29-12 against the Yass team of Des Bush, Mick Penyu, Steve Bush and Jamie Bush. Holt’s team proved superior in the final with a 22-14 victory. he Junee Ex-Services greens attracted 96 bowlers for the annual Railway Triples recently. It turned out to be a big win for a couple of local bowlers despite tough competition from bowlers as far afield as Newcastle, Liverpool and lllawarra with three games of 12 ends. Junee’s Chris Reily and Neil Thompson teamed with Lou Alehin, from Narrandera, to win the event frorn a Griffith team. Greg turned 95 on March 3 and is still playing pen­ nants and social bowls. Like most bowlers, Greg was never going to play bowls. However, his late wife, Marjorie, encouraged him to take up lawn bowls in 1951 at Ganmain, where he was a school teacher. He contin­ ued playing at Crookwell and Griffith EC’s until he was transferred to Sydney, where he joined Caringbah BC, in 1957. After serving on many committees, he was elected president and represented the club in grade 1 pennants and district fours. Since moving to Belrose in 1990, Greg has continued to play pennants, and last year celebrated 50 years as a bowler. This is about the same time that Belrose BC, came into existence after being a chook yard for many years. r Roger Hooper, Executive Director of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital and Community Health Services, which has as its motto, “Better health from the Harbour to the Hawkesbury”, has congratulated the Hornsby Inn Social BC, for their generous donation of $2,000, which will go towards providing urgently needed equipment for the Child and Adolescent Unit. The Hornsby Inn Social BC, is made up of registered bowlers from various clubs throughout the district. In addition to playing at many venues, the club has made substantial monetary contribu­ tions to the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital over many years. he Asquith EC’s clubhouse has undergone a $1.4 mil­ lion rejuvination and is now one of the most modern on Sydney’s North Shore. The official opening by Mr Richard Face, Minister for Gaming and Racing, will take place on Saturday April 6. Dignitaries attending will include, Philip Ruddock, Member for Berowra and Minister for Immigration, Cr. Nan Horne, Deputy Mayor of the Hornsby Shire Council, Terry Murphy, State President of the RNSWBA, Tony Ashpole, State President of the NSWJBA, and Tom Giles, Vice President, RNSWBA. ITH some reluctance I have sought three months leave of absence from my duties as Zone secretary while construction work pro­ ceeds on a new country retreat at Gloucester.

Fortunately Graham Richards (Wentworthville Leagues BC) has expressed a willingness to do the job during that period, and has been duly appointed as act­ ing Zone secretary. Graham comes to the position with eminent qualifications after many years as an executive member of the old Wentworthville BC, and was very involved in the successful merger of that club into the vibrant Wentworthville Leagues BC of today. n the circumstances with available time at a premium, I have found it necessary to tender my resignation as publicity officer for Zone 10, and consequently this will be my last column for Bowls Alive. To all those who have assisted me with contributions over the years, many thanks. I can only ask that you support the new Zone 10 publicity officer, whoever he may be. All those willing to take on the job should form an orderly queue when contacting the new acting Zone secretary! In the meantime Zone president Eric Mitchell has undertaken the task. He will be assisted by senior vice president Kevin Brown, and any snippets of interest should be directed to them. new Inter-Zone Challenge has been added to the 2002 Zone calendar with Zone 10 to play Zone 12 on July 21, at a venue within Zone 10 yet to be arranged. With Zone 10 the current proud holders of the State Inter-Zone Sides series playing the Zone 12 side, which had won the title for the preceding three years, this event will be a “must watch” day with the final selection for each Zone’s representative side for the big series in Wagga Wagga in September resting on the result. ossible good news awaits all those players who have complained from year to year about the early start of the State Pennants sectional rounds, with the possible decision by RNSWBA to conduct the Premier League as a separate event in 2003, commencing in July. This should enable the State Match Committee to meet the wishes of a majority of players and, I suspect, all the turf craftsmen who have advocated a later start for many years in order to be able to provide real quality playing surfaces with the commencement of Pennants.

Will we see a mid to late March starting date next year?

As keen players, we can only hope. must borrow from a speech of some years ago when I say that “I am sad to be leaving but glad to be going”, sad to be leaving because I will be relinquishing my reg­ ular contact with a great many friends with whom it has been a particular pleasure to serve the game of bowls, and specifically the players themselves. Glad to be going because I look forward to forging equally satisfying friendships with a new group of bowlers in Zone 6 and beyond. But enjoyable and successful bowling to you all.

All grades recorded a victory. But the Premier League “Devils” just couldn’t pull off the clean sweep on the Saturday and they went down to their perennial neme­ sis, Beresfield. So, as is customary when we record a 100% result, president George fronts the bar and turns it on for an hour. Needless to say, when they ring around on a Saturday afternoon you certainly don’t want to be the side to make the fellas dip out - as was the case in Round 3, when the No.4’s were pipped by three shots to go down 2-4 to Revesby Workers. hree members from St Johns Park BC ventured down to Adelaide for the Adelaide Invitation Masters, namely Karen Murphy, Steve Anderson and Steve Glasson. Karen rolled Steve Glasson in the quar­ ters, and she was beaten in the semis. When I wrote this item, Anderson was into the final.

This follows the club’s purchase of its site from Lake Macquarie City Council last year.

The club now has a new bar, a modern gaming room and a separate TAB and games area.

It has been fully carpeted and painted, and has new entrances, as well as a new central reception and office area.

A function room is also available for hire.

The renovations are the first large-scale improve­ ments that have been carried out at the club since it opened.

They also represent stage 1 of an ongoing three year refurbishment program.

The other stages will involve landscaping and the pro­ vision of a bistro and catering facilities.

A date for an official opening ceremony associated with the first stage renovations will be set later.

Meanwhile, the 50th anniversary celebrations includ­ ed the availability of a booklet featuring an account of the club’s history.

Also on sale were 200 bottles of port, with the first 100 to be sold with numbers as a collector’s item.

Redhead currently has a membership of more than 1000 people, and it has close links with the local com­ munity.

N LATE January, Francis Drake BC held an official opening day of their synthetic green.

The club invited seven teams to enjoy the occasion: RNSWBA led by Vice President Ned London, Zone 13 BA led by president Brian Adcock, Taren Point BC led by bowls administrator Wayne Turley, Double Bay BC led by Leon Portrote, Coogee BC led by John Facer, Carss Park BC led by Phil Lever and Ramsgate RSL BC led by Keith Cooper. The response was first class, and enjoyed by all with many comments on how true the green played. The board of directors at a meeting on January 23 decided to proceed with their second syn­ thetic green, the contractors commenced work on February 25. The club welcomes any bowlers who would like to roll up to ring, and then go along and enjoy the good greens and the hospitality of the club. t George DBA played their annual match against Nepean DBA at Roselands BC on February 3 attend­ ed by a large crowd of spectators. The representative match comprising of six teams from each District, was a close game right up to the final bowl, St George win­ ning 121 shots to 112, each District winning on three rinks. In the Academy match of four teams from each District, the Nepean District were too strong, winning on all four rinks with a total number of shots 92 to 55.

ngadine BC’s “Top of the Shire Night Triples” was again well supported during February, for the 29th time. Ninety teams took part in round robin play, with the eventual 18 section winners moving through to post sectional play. Teams from as far south as Warilla, north from Windsor, east from Double Bay and west from Camden, competed for the $7,800 prizemoney. The semi-final resulted in a win for Charlie Harrison, Chris and R. Girvan, of Taren Point, who defeated Tony Crammond, Peter Hughes and Matt Sargeant, from Engadine, 23 to 15. The other semi-final was won by Alan Todd, Rob Parrella and David Holt, of The Hills, who defeated David Jamieson, Jim Arnold and Mark Robinson, of Marrickville, 20 to 19. The final was close from the first bowl, with The Hills defeating Taren Point 17-16 on an extra end.

Peter Henry has acknowledged Kevin’s willingness to hand on his bowls administration expertise. Peter also praised the incoming vice president Max Chatwin, saying he would be an asset to the executive committee.

errigal BC’s bowls co-ordinator Miro Perovic is quite happy with his club’s introduction to the Newcastle District Mid-Week Competition. He said the home games at Terrigal have ben attracting good sized spec­ tator crowds and, overall, the performance by the mix of N o .l, 2, 4 and 5 Pennant players has improved the competitiveness of those competing. Miro said a similar mid-week competition in Zone 15 during the winter might be worth trying. “Certainly it’s food for thought for our Zone’s administration:, he added.

he enterprising Wamberal BC recently held an Aussie Theme Day to celebrate Australia Day with a maximum 64 bowlers on the eight rinks. There were hats with dangling corks, footie jumpers, convict cloth­ ing and plenty of other imaginative garb. Such original­ ity is good for the game and Wamberal is entitled to praise for its continuing progressive thinking. Its mem­ bership recruitment days have proved most successful and the club is forging ahead.

World class players, such as Willie Woods and Alex Marshall (from Scotland), Mark McMahon (England), Russell Meyer (from the “Shaky Isles”) and home bred champions like Tom Ellem, Ian Taylor etc were a guar­ antee that the spectators were going to see a lot of great games of bowls, and the spectators were not disap­ pointed. As is the case at all tournaments such as this, the punters will nominate who is going to win, to com­ pete in the final, semi-finals and so on, and there is always someone who gets it right, but not this time. The final was played between David Holt and Rob Parrella, and Don Peoples and Marc Parrella. David and Rob beat John Delahunty and Ian Taylor in one semi-final, and Don and Marc beat Justin Goodwin and Russell Meyer in the other. The final was a very good game to watch and proved to be a case of the pupil defeating the master, when Don and Marc hung on to win and take the first prize. All bowlers feel disappointed at losing to a greater or lesser degree, but Rob did not appear to be too unhappy to see Cello on the winner’s platform. he Zone 16 Fours Championships produced a num­ ber of very good games, and what was also encour­ aging was the fact that there were eight more teams than last year. The semi-final winners were Ian Taylor and team (Warilla) over Tom Ellem and team (Oak Flats) by one shot, and Mick Wolter and team (Kiama) over Geoff Clinton and team (Woonona). The final was a good game won by Bob Blomley, Alex Sweeney, John Brownlie and Mick Wolter, and the runners-up were Neil Newson, Ted Clarke, Geoff McGillivray and Ian Taylor.

Some people these days claim that the game of bowls is in the hands of the younger generation, but of the eight finalists, only three can claim to be in that group, which goes to support the theme that this is a game for all ages.

taying with the “game for all ages” as has been pre­ viously reported, Willie Wood, of Scotland, is playing with the Warilla club, and a lot of bowlers have been sur­ prised to find that Willie was out here about 20 years ago playing in the “Jack High” tournament (the real one), and even after all those years he is still world class.

What is more important, he is still enjoying the game and is still a gentleman, and long may he continue to be.

he decrease in membership numbers around the State over recent years caused some concern about whether the Veterans Day games would attract sufficient numbers to make it a viable event, but happily, on the day, 170 Vets and Super Vets turned up at the Warilla club and had themselves a really good day of bowls and meeting up with old friends. The Warilla club made sure that all the facilities were open to allow the Vets to have a ball and Neil Bayo, Rocky Stone and the staff and members deserve a big ‘thank you”. Harry Jardine and Joe Sharman were responsible for promoting the event and the number of Vets present was pleasing to both of them.

David and Nathan played in the successful tests we had against Victoria and South Australia in January this year, which is a good way to end your junior career, and the Junior Bowls Association hope they carry on their good performances into the senior ranks.

David’s achievements in junior bowls have been very impressive. He has won two District Singles, been run­ ner up twice, won Zone 4 Singles, as well as runner up twice, and a State semi-finalist.

In pairs he has won three District Pairs, runner up in District pairs once, won three Zone pairs, won two State pairs, semi finalist in State Pairs, runner up in the JJ Carroll State Presidents Pairs.

In the fours, he has won three District fours, been run­ ner up twice, won two Zone fours, won State fours as well as the Australian Junior fours. He has also been a State Junior representative in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.

His senior achievements have been club pairs in 2002, two District pairs in 1999, 2001, runner up in Zone 4 Champion of Champion Pairs in 2001, runner up in District triples and fours and won the club triples in 2001.

He has been a District and Zone representative in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Also, he has represented Dubbo in the State Premier League in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

est Dubbo junior bowler Raymond Holmes has continued his success in the South Pacific Junior Championships by winning the pairs title in a thrilling final.

Two years ago, Raymond scored his greatest achieve­ ment in bowls with a win in the singles, and while he didn’t have any success this time, it was a much differ­ ent position in the pairs.

He teamed with 13 year old Daniel Williams, from North Haven BC to beat West Dubbo’s David Ferguson and Shannon Mitchell, from Maitland, 18-17 in the final.

It was a roller coaster ride for Raymond, who has recently moved to West Dubbo from Dubbo Railway, to play Pennants with his new club this year.

Raymond went to Dapto hoping to do okay in both singles and pairs with Justin Murphy from Nowra. But Justin called in sick, so he was paired with Daniel, who had only intended to play singles.

While Ray did not do any good in the singles, it was a great feeling to take out the pairs.

Raymond and Daniel got a three on the second last end to get within two shots of them, and Daniel played two great bowls near the jack and they held them to pick up the two they needed to win 18-17. Raymond said it was an exciting way to win and funny that young Daniel asked me at the finish who won.

Daniel Williams is a member of the North Coast Bowls Academy under the care of coach Bill Ross, from North Haven. Bill Ross said of young Daniel that he is improving very quickly for a youngster who has been bowling for about a year. This was by far his biggest win, and the experience will do him good. he St George’s Basin BC is doing a very good job in promoting junior bowls in its District. At present, they have 28 junior boys and six junior girls playing bowls in their club. Two very good senior officials look after the junior boys and girls by the names of Keith McDermott and Ken Hodgett.

1 believe Keith and Ken have the juniors playing on Sunday mornings and afternoons, and the junior bowlers are as keen as anything to play the game. Peter Chamberlain, a member of the St Georges Basin BC and an ex-secretary of the Nepean Junior Bowls Association, has informed me that some of the senior members in the club have asked some of the juniors to play with them in club championships.

It is pleasing to see the senior members of this club take an interest in their junior bowlers, and I wish other clubs would follow their lead, because the junior bowlers of today are the ones that are going to keep your club going in the years ahead.

1 believe the St Georges Basin BC juniors have a game coming up on May 26 against the Illawarra Academy side, so if you want to see some good bowl­ ing, I suggest that you make a trip to see these fine junior bowlers play.

If any dub or Zone is interested in arranging a game for their juniors, may I suggest that you give Ken McDermott or Ken Hodgett a call. I feel sure they will only be too happy to help you out. n April 27 and 28 we have the Senior/Junior Carnival being held at the Regents Park BC. Every junior that we have on our data base who reside in Zones 2, 5, 9, 10 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16 will receive a personal letter of invitation with Conditions of Play and an entry form.

Any senior or junior bowler outside the Zones men­ tioned above who would like to take part in this carnival, can give our chairman of Match, John Swan, a call, he will only be too happy to add your name to the list. It is held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse (Sydney), and this year the dates are April 6-14, between 10am and 6pm each day.

This year’s show will be bigger and better than ever, with hundreds of caravans, motorhomes, camper trail­ ers, campervans, 4WD’s and tents on display.

If you are a keen fisherman, you will not want to miss the new fishing section, with its extensive range of rods, reels and accessories.

One of the highlights will be an amazing five-wheel caravan built specifically for Australian conditions.

Visitors can also take advantage of free seminars, which cover a range of topics, including safe caravan towing, insurance compliance, 4WD driving in Australia, towing weights and caravanning hints.

There will also be camp cooking demon­ strations.

The Supershow is held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, just five minutes from the Parramatta CBD. Plenty of parking is avail­ able.

There is a rail service to the entrance for those who prefer to travel by train.

Childen under 16 years of age are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
