SUCCESS WITH ONLINE RESERVATIONS To the tune of doubling online business! By Corrie Pelc

A

and they don't have another place to take kids, they just hop on our reservation system and make the reservation for the bowling center instead of the park."

"Our older online reservation system Jennifer Davis-Korn wasn't ‘live,’ meaning the reservations that customers made were not connected to our online live availability," explains Jennifer Davis-Korn, marketing director for 48 Bowl Inc. "People would have to make reservations at least 24 hours in advance, and then we would manually have to go block out those lanes and names in our paper calendar."

Davis-Korn says they were also able to customize their online reservations portal to allow bowling leagues to schedule their make-up sessions. “During the league season, we have so many make-up sessions, and they became a burden for our staff to figure out if they could schedule the sessions," she continues. "Now it’s automated for our league bowlers. They go online, pick their league make-up time, and boom! It's right in the computer like any other reservation, and our staff doesn't have to deal with it at all."

lthough 48 Bowl Inc. already used an online reservation system for its two bowling centers, Hollywood Bowl and Parkway Lanes in Lincoln, NE, staff realized it needed to meet their needs.

After installing Brunswick's Sync scoring and management system in both centers in late 2021, Davis-Korn says they decided to switch to Sync's online reservations capability that provides “live” reservation booking capability.

Doubling Online Business

Davis-Korn says regular open play lanes at both their 24lane bowling centers are available to reserve online through 48Bowl.com, or guests can come in and make a reservation through a kiosk at the centers. "It is all tied together. Customers can reserve lanes online from their phone, tablet at home, or directly in the center," she details. Since using Sync's online reservations capability, Davis-Korn says they have seen their online business at least double. "It's easy for people to see when they can do it immediately — it's an easy yes for them," she adds.

Not Just for Open Play

People wanting to book birthday parties are encouraged to do so through the online reservation system. "Many of our reservations are three- and four-lane birthday parties or teen celebrations. They reserve a group of four lanes online," Davis-Korn explains. To help take some workload off their booking coordinator, 48 Bowl Inc. allowed daycares, camps, and schools to book field trips through their online reservation system. "Often, the camp director would want to book for a certain date, with a certain number of kids, at a specific time. They would have a list of ten dates throughout the summer; we just put it all in their hands," Davis-Korn says. "The other great thing about that is when their park trip gets rained out, 10 IBI November 2023

League Make-Up Sessions

Top Tips!

1. Start small and ease into “live” mode. For any center considering implementing an online reservation system with "live" reservation capability, Davis-Korn suggests starting small and easing staff into it. "Each of our centers has 24 lanes," she explains. "We started with just six lanes that we made available for reservations. We did that for several months so that we could make sure that the reservation system was working out and easy to manage. We got used to it, and the demand was so high we were selling out of all our reservations all the time, so we opened up more lanes for reservations." 2. Create a plan for what you want to offer guests with your online system. For example, 48 Bowl Inc.'s two centers have set times that people can reserve a lane. Think of this like choosing a movie time: guests choose from a set time when lanes are available, making it easier for staff to manage. Davis-Korn explains, “The staff knows this block of lanes is going to have reservations come on at this time, and they're going to have a little grace period to clean up before the next group of reservations come in." Online reservation systems are now the norm. In 2022, Brunswick’s online reservation system did a total of 1.4 million online reservations across all their customer sites, providing more proof that customers expect it in today’s tech driven world. Coupled with the benefits of less workload for your staff and the probability of doubling business, offering online reservations makes sound business sense.

Considerations to make the right flooring choice for your center By Jose A. Segarra and Randell Thrasher

As more operators reinvest in their facilities to meet guest expectations, we look to flooring and what to consider when updating your center. This starts a series of articles to help you choose the right fit for your business.

I

t’s been said that embracing change is the key to a good life. However, there is a certain uneasiness in that one word: change. It evokes both excitement about something new and fear of the unknown. Proper planning and research should ease concerns, allowing you to make a quality decision that is the ideal choice to meet your objectives.

Seven flooring elements to consider: 1.

DESIGN – Do you want a more modern, metropolitan look or a historic feel to the center? Will you combine colors, styles, and textures to delineate different areas within the center, or will a uniform scheme be the right choice?

2. FUNCTIONALITY – Will you add party rooms' functionality and revenue-generating potential? Consider the traffic, use, and abuse of flooring and surfaces, the accidental spills of food and beverages. The surfaces you choose must endure this wear and tear while being easy to clean. 3. PERFORMANCE – What materials will provide durability and cleanability without sacrificing the design options needed for the center to look its best for the longest time? 4. HEALTH – Surfaces either spread or mitigate the spread of germs and bacteria. When using "healthy" products,

TIP: To ease the fear of change, you should allow

areas for a well-placed test area that is representative of the desired conditions and addresses your concerns. Surface manufacturers will suggest the most suitable products and supply materials for you to test.

12 IBI November 2023

you spread peace of mind to your customers, who will feel safer and stay longer at your center. 5. SUSTAINABILITY – Will sustainability and environmental protection be a consideration in your marketing plan? Trends have changed, and the public is becoming more aware of the impact you may have on the environment, whether you call it out or not. 6. MAINTENANCE – Deciding how maintenance will be performed is essential. Will you hire a professional housekeeping team or attempt to do this in-house? Either way, choosing surfaces with low maintenance requirements is critical. 7. ROI – Whether thinking of your floors, walls, countertops, or fixtures, you must realize the best ROI. This can be achieved when sustainable, durable, and cleanable surfaces represent the lowest cost of ownership. Different surfaces will do different jobs; choosing the right flooring for your entrance vestibule will ensure greater performance of your surfaces inside the center. The right surface for the right application with the right maintenance will pay back the investment many times over. Next, in our flooring series, we’ll dive deep into these seven key considerations that create positive changes for increased revenue in your facility.

GOODWILL CENTRAL

Bowling proprietors have always been at the forefront of supporting their communities and donating space to nurture charities. There is no better way to do good and have fun at the same time.

BOWLING AGAINST BULLYING In Kosciusko County, IN, Deputy Shaun Mudd wanted to help kids suffering from bullying and try to shine a light on the problem. It started with a small step for him to take a student bowling with him. Now, five years in, he and a team of volunteers have drawn in more than 100 kids for an afternoon of free bowling to gather donations for his cause – bullying. This year, BOWLING AGAINST BULLYING has set up a $1,000 scholarship to be given to a student struggling with bullying. Also, the group has raised over $10,000 with a goal of $25,000. Once that number is reached, the scholarship will live off the interest. Small efforts reap big goals.

SPARE THE PETS TOURNAMENT STRIKEZONE IV, in El Centro, CA, exchanged the sounds of pins and arcade bells for barking from the special guests visiting from the Humane Society of Imperial County. More than 30 teams representing a wide variety of local businesses and organizations showed up to participate in many of the lavish prizes and support the day’s mission: helping displaced animals find a forever home.

The video masking unit is a groundbreaking innovation reshaping the FEC bowling anchored landscape. This state-of-the-art tool enhances guests' visual experience while providing several key business benefits that make sound financial sense. Masking units deliver stunning, high-definition video playback that transcends traditional boundaries by providing immersive experiences.

No More Projector Headaches

One of the most significant challenges entertainment venues face is the constant maintenance and repair costs associated with traditional projector-based video systems. These costly repairs drain your budget and disrupt the entertainment experience for your guests. High-tech masking units solve this problem by replacing projectors with advanced LED displays. These LED panels are stunningly vibrant and incredibly reliable. Gone are the days of worrying about projector bulb replacements and screen tears. With an impressive lifespan, these panels provide years of trouble-free operation, allowing you to focus on delivering exceptional guest experiences. The units provide excellent visibility even with the house lights on, eliminating the need to dim the lights for a clear display.

16 IBI November 2023

Moreover, the maintenance-free nature of these LED panels means you won't have to allocate resources for constant repairs and replacements. This saves you money and frees up your staff to concentrate on other critical aspects of running your business.

Dynamic Windowing and Automated Controls Most new masking unit systems offer more than just a replacement for projectors; they introduce dynamic windowing and advanced control systems, giving you unparalleled flexibility and ease of use. I

t’s easy to forget how lucky we are, and even easier to forget how we can help others! While traveling through Chile, Carey Tosello, founder of eBowl.biz found an opportunity to use his talent in website building to make a difference in the life of a local tour guide.

“My wife Robin and I were in Santiago, Chile, and we found a wine tour.” Carey tells us, “I did some research on Tripadvisor, found this company, and booked it. Our guide, Brian, shows up with a van and takes us all over! A ton of wineries in Casablanca Valley. He spoke multiple languages, really knew the wine culture, and was so passionate about his city and country.” They all had dinner together and the experience was so great, they spent a second day touring with Brian, and then Carey headed off to hike Patagonia for a few days. “When you come back, we’re gonna fix a barbeque!” Brian told Carey, “I’ve never invited clients before, but I want to host dinner for you at my home.” Carey tells us that he and Robin were excited to be treated to an authentic local dinner. When they arrived, the area was nothing like the neighborhoods back home. “We take for granted how lucky we are. We started talking and I found out the tour company van outside was actually his own work van. I never met anyone from the original company, Brian was doing it all. I asked what their fee was to work with them, and it turned out the tour company was taking 50% of the revenue just for having a website that shows up in searches. Brian was responsible for taking care of the rest!” Brian told Carey that he didn't have a website. So, Carey offered to build Brian's website at no charge. As part of my writing research, I went online to check Brian’s new, incredible website. The first thing I noticed was the astounding drone footage that started playing on the homepage, zooming out 20 IBI November 2023

from cheering tourists at a winery, flying into the air, and panning over an entire view of the vineyard. My first question was… "Who made this?" Carey tells us “Brian made it! We didn’t even notice that while we were enjoying the winery, he was compiling drone shots of the trips, and offering them to his clients as free memorabilia. I told him, you have a business here, you need to start charging for that. And we’ll promote it on the site.” “So that was my gift to help somebody out, somewhere else in the world. I travel a lot all over the world and you know, I’m always looking for ways to try and help somebody along the way. We're so blessed to live where we live, I like to be able to use my experience and reach out with a helping hand when I can. I thought that this was a great way. I can really help this guy and help his family.” If you’re mulling over a trip to Chile, you may want to contact Carey for a few tips before you book your plans. Carey is IBI’s official resource for all travel-related adventures. And be sure to check out Brian’s new site courtesy of Carey and his eBowl.biz staff at https://santiagowinetours.com

Inside Line

Meet Fred Kaplowitz By Stephanie Davis

Each month IBI’s “Inside Line” highlights a team member from one of our loyal advertisers. It’s always fun to learn a little something new about people who make things happen at their company and for the industry. This month we talked with Fred Kaplowitz, President of the Kaploe Marketing Group. IBI: How long have you been in the bowling industry? Fred: I began my career in bowling in 1977 with the National Bowling Council after being with Citibank for six years. I’ve worked extensively in marketing for the industry, including Brunswick Bowling products and then Bowling Corporation of America. Wanting to fulfill a lifelong dream, I eventually launched the Kaploe Marketing Group, a marketing and management consulting agency that teaches proprietors how to market their centers for more efficient profit growth. Being in bowling is a great ride, and I am blessed to have my company and consultants having helped hundreds of proprietors worldwide.

IBI: With many bowling proprietors looking at adding diverse attractions to their facilities, what should they know about how you can help them? Fred: My core skill set has always been market research and consumer behavior analysis. If a proprietor plans to invest hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, they need to understand the market from a consumer background point of view not just the market demographics, and what kinds of experiences they want. It’s not about the new attractions. In today’s world, it’s about how well the new interests create a unique consumer experience that exceeds a guest's expectations. 22 IBI November 2023

Fred and Marie

Inside Line IBI: What are the benefits of working with you for the more traditional style bowling centers versus FECs? Fred: In a word: Experience! And I say this humbly. I don’t think anyone in marketing in this country has been in more bowling centers or worked with more proprietors and their staff than I have. Additionally, we have leased, owned, and managed upwards of ten centers around the country. We understand traditional bowling centers and FECs because we have been where they are and understand their challenges.

IBI: What do you have planned for 2024? Fred: I am working on the 2nd edition of my self-published Amazon book, "Stoplights, " a compilation of poems and stories I have written over the past 45 years. Proceeds from the book are given to SAY, the Stuttering Association for the Young. As a former stutterer and former board member of this organization, it is especially gratifying for me to give back, helping kids who stutter overcome the negative vibes in their heads and get them to realize that they, too, have a voice. Professionally, I want to help more proprietors via Zoom consulting-coaching sessions. It’s a more affordable way to do business with no travel time.

IBI: You're passionate about the industry’s oldest charity, Bowlers to Veteran’s Link. Please share a little bit about BVL with our readers. Fred: BVL is a cause I’m very passionate about. Some of my friends went to Vietnam and came back physically disabled; others came back suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Every time I went to the VA hospital and saw them, I cried, and every time I left them, I cried, so raising money for BVL is very close to my heart. BVL provides many resources for our veterans, including recreational grants that dramatically improve the quality of their lives. I want to get as many proprietors as possible to jump on board and raise money for this worthy endeavor.

IBI: What do you like most about your career? Fred: The most gratifying part of my career is helping people achieve their goals or get them out of jams they may have fallen into. Helping people is what I like most about my work.

IBI: What habit, technique, or strategy do you employ at work to keep you organized and on task? Fred: I have always been a night owl, rarely sleeping before 2 a.m. The hours between 11:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. are when I make up my achievable to-do list for the following day. I start with the most arduous task, working down to the least difficult task. Between these hours, I also mull over the issues I have worked on for the day and look for the “Ah 24 IBI November 2023

Fred and his granddog, Mavis

Ha!” moment to find a strategic nugget that will improve an operator’s life or solve a critical problem we discussed.

IBI: What new trends do you see emerging in the industry going into 2024? Fred: A lot is going on! I see many new, non-bowling investors coming into the industry. I also see the advent of artificial intelligence becoming an essential tool in a center’s marketing mix. We will continue to experience significant industry consolidation, between Bowlero acquiring more centers, the older proprietors selling to the next generation of owners, and some facilities being sold for land.

IBI: How do you like spending time when you're not working? Fred: I love visiting my adult children and grandkids. Whether I am watching them play baseball, act or sing in a play, play board games, or build Legos. And, of course, I love being with my wife, Marie, and sharing our love for all things SAAB, going to car club meets and events.

IBI: What would our readers be surprised to learn about you? Fred: While many people in my inner circle know details of my younger life, others don’t. At one point in my life, during college, out of necessity, I slept in my car for part of my sophomore year in downtown Brooklyn. A very kind family sort of adopted me, gave me food, and let me study and sleep on their sofa when the winter winds blew; God must have been watching over me to send those good people into my life. That experience has been a driving force for me to give back to others in need.

GOODWILL CENTRAL BOWLING IS HEALING Football is a rough, challenging sport. Bowling is a challenging, uniting sport. Example: Travis Hunter, Colorado University, Boulder, and Henry Blackburn, Colorado State University, Fort Collins. They met in not a kind manner. Blackburn’s late, out-ofbounds hit to Hunter hospitalized him with a lacerated liver. Blackburn was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. Not a good situation in the heat of sports battle. To still the feelings and to try to rectify the action, the two players dropped their footballs and picked up bowling balls. Friendship off the field was the hope. According to ESPN, both players donated money toward their bowling games, and the winner picked a charity to receive the proceeds. Sportsmanlike conduct won the day. Bowling heals.

BOWLING SAVES THE DAY! IN NEED OF NURSES While the medical sector faces diminishing numbers of nurses, Johnson Memorial Health in Franklin, IN, is working proactively to focus on improving working conditions and thus welcoming back good-quality nurses to their staff. The tool to attain the goal is bowling. It is almost a Mighty Mouse concept: “Bowling has come to save the day!” Memorial Health each year hosts a bowl-a-thon with the goal to raise money to fund tuition reimbursement for nurses and to improve the workplace. Peer support is paramount. This year the event selected a costume theme of favorite TV show characters to energize the bowling teams. Through the fundraising this year, one group of employees received $12,000 to undergo training to create a team that focuses on helping employees during personal emergencies.

INDUSTRY NEWS AND UPDATES

AUSTRALIA ADOPTS SPORTING PILOT FOR SCHOOLS Tenpin Bowling Australia (TBA) has embarked on a journey in cooperation with the Australian Sports Commission to introduce and engage teenagers in sports outside of the “usual.” The aim is to give secondary school teens an activity that can be inclusive, fun, and one that grows with time. TBA felt that tenpin bowling was just the sport to capture interest, plus it is affordable. The pilot program not only taught students the techniques of bowling but also the importance of perseverance, aiming high, and enjoying the process of learning something new. By branching out into secondary schools, TBA is ensuring that tenpin bowling finds its way into the hearts of the younger generation and potentially ignites a lifelong passion for the sport.

KEEPING MERCH UP TO DATE, THE EASY WAY By Corrie Pelc

W

hen Joey Sparks, general manager at Wonderland Family Fun Center in Spokane, WA, took over the ordering and stocking of redemption prizes and the prize wall, it was very daunting.

Night and Day Difference

Joey Sparks

Getting an order of any type of inventory requires the correct calculation of your customized par level. A par level is the minimum amount of inventory needed to meet customer demand while providing a cushion for unexpected demand (safety stock). When inventory hits below your par level, an order should be placed to restock the item.

"I didn't know what I was doing," he recalls. "We needed to refill, but I didn’t understand the concept of pars and ordering correctly. We would get a huge order in. It would feel so good — I would get the wall stocked. And after the weekend, we're out of half this stuff. It was always an uphill battle." Sparks says management recognized the need for a wellstocked redemption wall. "Redemption drives people to play more so they can save up or spend their tickets at the end of their visit and then get something they want," he explains. As Wonderland Family Fun Center had previously worked with BMI Merchandise, they decided it was time to use their proprietary Automated Merchandise Replenishment System (AMRS), which encompasses the design, planning, installation, and fulfillment of redemption merchandise.

With access to BMI's AMRS for ordering and managing redemption product inventory, Sparks says the difference between that and what they had previously been doing was like the difference between night and day. "We have the support of people who understand what they're doing," he explains. "Keeping the right amount of inventory without having too much, without running out every other day, is key. Being able to communicate what is selling well and adjusting the pars is fantastic. The weekly order and inventory are so helpful." Sparks says the design services and custom plan-o-gram BMI offers through the AMRS program also helped spruce up their redemption area by making it attractive for guests and easier for staff. "I come from the beer industry, so I'm used to seeing schematics and ensuring that product fits in the coolers correctly," he continues. "Having everything organized with the symmetrical barcodes and price tags, the display looks good, and flows so well. It just blew my mind. We've never had any of that before, so seeing it was cool."

Numbers Don’t Lie

BMI's AMRS also helps Sparks and his team at Wonderland Family Fun Center truly see what is selling well and what is not without having to guess. "Staff can look at things and believe that something sells well," Sparks explains. "And then you look at the hard numbers, and, actually, we've only sold three in the past three months. Being able to break things down by numbers — because we all know numbers don't lie — that's what helps the most."

Licensed Prizes Are the Ticket

Through the AMRS program, Sparks says Wonderland Family Fun Center can offer licensed redemption prizes and stay on top of the biggest trends. "We have four crane machines that we purchase licensed plush through BMI; our crane machines outsell all of our other games," he continues. "We're not just putting a colorful teddy bear in the machine. We put Spider-Man, Transformers, Barbie, and all these licensed items help generate so much business for both sides." Bottom line: a professional can help increase your redemption and prize sales and eliminate all the headaches that accompany the management of a redemption center. Let the professionals ease your way to bigger profits.

DRIVES GROWTH

Cover Story

W

hen O'Learys founder, Jonas Reinholdsson, came to Boston and Nantucket as a teenager, he had no idea what was coming his way. Not only did he meet Anne O'Leary, the love of his life and the namesake for his future business, but his American-bred idea caught on like wildfire in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden. In 1988, Reinholdsson opened his first O’Learys, an American-style sports bar, which quickly grew into 130+ FECs, sports pubs, and event spaces worldwide. Fast-forward to June 2023, and O'Learys’ story is still going strong. With robust franchise growth and corporately held locations, Reinholdsson merged with the Swedish firm JJL Group. Founded in 2005 and led by Jesper Liedstrand, Marcus Smith and Jesper Liedstrand president, and his partner, Marcus Smith, vice president, JJL Group operates, manages, and invests in entertainment centers, restaurants, and hotels. JJL Group’s mission is to create relaxed, social environments where guests enjoy food and beverage, live events, and activities for all ages. Their spaces encourage customers to meet, socialize, and create memories together. They currently manage nine O’Learys units with more locations in the works. O’Learys in Linköping offers a wide variety of attractions, including black-light mini-golf, laser tag, karaoke, ten lanes

of bowling, Bank Shot (a game combining shuffleboard and billiards), darts, an arcade, pool tables, a casino, and a restaurant with a seating capacity of 350. Food and beverage comprise 78% of the revenue at O’Learys Linköping, with bowling coming in next. An interesting feature of O’Learys business model may be the mini-casino operating in some of the franchises. With blackjack tables and roulette, the casino at Linköping has a maximum wager of 250 Swedish Krona (USD 20.00) and provides more of an entertainment experience than serious gambling. On Friday and Saturday evenings, open-mic karaoke is very popular. From 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., the karaoke spaces open up to a brand-new dance floor called the Schlager Club, where they spin disco and Schlager songs — a style of European popular music that is a catchy instrumental accompaniment to vocal pieces of pop music with simple, happy-go-lucky, and often sentimental lyrics. The JJL Group are focused on growth: in June, the group announced plans to install their largest O’Learys to date in the Linden shopping mall in the city of Norrköping, a gigantic facility scheduled to open in the summer of 2024.

Thank you to Pauline Wallander, project marketing manager, and Robin Lundgren, operations manager, for their valuable input to this story. IBI November 2023 31

Building Food & Beverage Brand Identity

DUDE,

What's Your

VIBE? By Mike Fernandez

W

hat's the atmosphere of your dining area? Is it cozy, quirky, or exciting?

Izzee's Barefoot Bar at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Ohio is an outside venue with palm trees, tiki huts, and sand volleyball.

Does it have a name? Or just a sign that says, "Order Here?"

The name provides guests with an actual location they can point others toward and be identified as a separate entity from the rest of your center. They can't just mention Izzee's Barefoot Bar to a friend and not expand further!

Draw more attention to your food operations by projecting its unique identity.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

A name is a start. Both people and brands often struggle with their purpose and identity, but at the very least, they have a name. Your bar and dining area are a large portion of your revenue, so let's claim and name it. Naming your center was the first decision you made when building the brand identity of your center. You chose to be 'Local Town Lanes' or 'Xtreme Thunder Family Fun Center.' You decide what invites the most appeal to your target audience, and guests know what atmosphere they might expect before their first visit. The same goes for your food and beverage operation; when you name it, you start to give it a definition, a vibe. FOR EXAMPLE: The Kegler at Red Ray Lanes in North Dakota is a casual lounge where local bowlers can socialize between games. Sports Pub Den at Manor Lanes in Florida is a low-lit bar with numerous TVs and pool tables. 34 IBI November 2023

WHAT CREATES AN ATMOSPHERE?

Remember that for brands and people, a name is just the start. The emotions invoked by that name are created by the traits behind it and the atmosphere surrounding it. Once your food and beverage area has a name, it's time to back it up. Which direction do you go? You can create a space that fits the existing atmosphere of your center or go with something that stands out as a unique destination for guests. This depends on your center's needs. It's essential to consider your

Booze and Bites

existing setup when weighing your naming options. Can the food and beverage areas play off of your center's current sound, lighting, or furniture installations? Or would a small wall go a long way in creating a more private setting without causing other issues?

Maybe you're in a location that caters to a younger demographic like high school and college students. You could go with a nostalgic arcade theme. It doesn't take much more than black lights, an LED-lit bar, and some Pac-Man signage. Trivia nights work well in this setting.

WHAT'S THE BEST ROUTE FOR YOU?

Simple furnishing upgrades might be the most important for centers that cater to more traditional bowlers and leaguers. Rather than small steel chairs, provide more comfortable booths to encourage longer stays. Round tabletops typically fit just four people, but rectangular tabletops can fit teams of six and be rearranged to fit even more.

If weekend nights are slower for you, consider going the sports bar route to bring the fan crowds of basketball, football, and UFC fight nights. Providing enough TVs to play multiple games and offering solid bar deals are essential when targeting fans. They may want to hear more announcements during big games versus crashing pins.

BOOZE

OUT-OF-THE-BOX BARBECUE FLAVORS!

One way to increase bar revenues is by encouraging guests to try something new. If they love it, they'll come back for more. If it's not their style, they've just spent a few extra bucks and found a new talking point before returning to their favorites. A concept we tried at this year's Bowl Expo was Kurvball, the original barbecue whiskey. As a whiskey and carnivorous guy, myself, who's always looking to try something new, it was a perfect match. My first glass of this was the new beverage experience I'm always on the hunt for. It delivered the initial familiar whiskey flavor, followed rapidly by the mesquite barbecue flavor that's become a hallmark of American cuisine. It was a deliciously unique taste, sweet and smokey with a balanced heat. My city isn't big on barbecue, so my first thought afterward was, "Yum! When was the last time I had ribs?!" If you can partner this drink with a discount on barbecue wings or ribs, you'll be smoking up a whole new slab of revenue.

MARKETING MAGIC: Main Even in Fayetteville, NC, hyped its opening with a “missing” bowling pins scavenger hunt contest. Clues were found on the website. FEC Operators ♥ Kids Bowl Free

If you’re looking for more traffic, data, or revenue, The National Kids Bowl Free Summer Program (KBF) can help you achieve all three. KBF has become a key marketing tool for FEC’s that offer bowling; creating traffic and spending in time for slots where centers want additional business like spring, summer, and fall. Operators enjoy secondary spending on rental shoes, food and beverage, and other attractions of the operation. KBF’s user-friendly, automated system collects customer data from families that register children which includes birthday information and other key marketing data. KBF communicates with families year-round on behalf of the center. Additional revenue from the wildly popular KBF Family Pass, results in centers receiving checks from Family Pass sales which are made on behalf of each participating center. Since 2008 more than 32 million children have been registered for over 1,500 centers throughout the US, Canada, and military installations around the world. Entertainment Center, in Holland. This marks the 4th and 5th locations in the state that are expected to close in the fall of 2023 and reopen as Bowleros. Tom Shannon, president and CEO of the corporation, shared, “These acquisitions align with our ongoing strategic growth initiatives of buy, build and convert. We look forward to our continued growth as we welcome these additions to our portfolio.”

NEW JERSEY: Circle Bowl & Entertainment in Ledgewood has acquired Stelton Lanes in Piscataway and plans on reviving the space. Stelton Lanes closed in the early days of COVID-19; it originally opened in the 1960s. The re-do will have 14 bowling lanes, a pro shop, a full-service restaurant and bar, an arcade, television wall, private party rooms, and a gift shop.

GEORGIA: Strike Zone 10, a family entertainment venue in Moultrie, is open. It has 15,000 square feet of fun spaces consisting of 10 bowling lanes, an arcade with more than 25 games, and an event room that can accommodate 60 to 80 guests.
