UPDATE MEETING ON PROPOSED NEW SCHOOL The University of Birmingham School and Sixth Form (off Weoley Park Road) The School and Sixth Form is scheduled to open in 2015. The University has undertaken a pre-planning application consultation and their planning application is expected to be lodged soon.

Manor Farm Park A small and relatively secluded area of natural beauty, Manor Farm Park is situated just off the Bristol Road South, opposite the Royal Orthopaedic hospital. Surprisingly, it still remains an undiscovered source of peace and solitude among some of the local populace. Many people have been heard to say: “if you did not know it was there, you would probably never find it”. Once discovered, however, it is not soon forgotten.

There is an active Friend’s Group with over 180 members and the Management Committee have a good working relationship with the Parks Department and Ranger Service so, several times a year, working parties of volunteers undertake maintenance tasks throughout the park. The Committee also organize regular Events which are usually well attended, such as Bat Walks morning strolls to listen to the Dawn Chorus.

Onesie or another St Mary’s Hospice aims to beat onesie world record Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is going onesie mad as it gears up for a hilarious event this autumn. The Birmingham Onesie Walk is to take place on Sunday, October 27 at 11am and is being dubbed ‘the most comfortable event’ the city has ever seen.

The five-mile sponsored walk starts and finishes at the ICC in Broad Street and includes a ‘One-mile Onesie Wander’ for families with little ones, or people who feel unable to complete the full five miles. Organisers are expecting a dazzling array of onesie designs, as people take to the streets.

“The event is being put on in a tongue-in-cheek spirit, but there is a serious reason for it. Each year the Hospice is called upon to care for 1,000 people who have been given the news that their illness is incurable. We are there for these people and their families at home and at our specialist facility, to ensure they are able to enjoy the best possible quality of life for the time that they have left. Whilst people might feel slightly silly putting on a onesie, they’ll be doing so in the knowledge that they’re doing something amazing to help others facing the biggest challenge of their life.”

BOWLS CLUB REPORT

Weoley Hill Cricket Club know the SCORE!

by Arthur Morgan, President Our season is now coming to a close, it has been very successful. The good weather has allowed us to have some excellent social bowling, some fine matches with other clubs and generally has been great fun. Our two open days have been wonderfully successful with good attendance by members and friends and we have raised funds for our club and for charity. We are looking forward to the remaining planned events and the last day of the bowling season will be on Sunday 6th October.

We are always ready to welcome new members at any time of the year.

rior to the start of the 2013 season, Weoley Hill Cricket Club built a much needed scoreboard for the level of cricket now being played. It is a traditional type scoreboard with digital numbering. This was completed along with the upgrading of the patio at the front of the clubhouse. The work was funded by Sports Lottery funding.

As most of you know we meet on Sunday mornings for sail, Sunday afternoon for power, Wednesday mornings for sail and Thursday for power. The club is very active with a membership of over 100 and everyone is welcome to visit any time we are here. All you need to do is put your head around the Club House door and you will be made very welcome. If you want to join us so much the better, just talk to anyone of our members. You never know, you might get a go, and you will never know where that may lead. If you want to know “What’s on When” our calendar is on the Club House door or take a look at our website.

BVT HANDYPERSON SERVICE EXPANDS Due to continuing high demand BVT have recruited a new handyperson. Members of BVTs Resident Panels helped recruit Phil Allen to work alongside existing Handyperson Roy Smith in August.

The Handyperson Service is run by BVT’s Community Team and is available to all residents.

All sorts of jobs are undertaken from changing lightbulbs and curtains to tiling and slabbing.

Environmental News Tread lightly 19 First the good news: this year the extent of the Arctic summer ice has not decreased as much as last year. Mind you, it is still less than the average for the first decade of this century. It does not mean that climate change has come to a standstill. Also, it only applies to the Eastern Siberian Arctic Ocean, despite the fact that the Polar region has been colder by two degrees C than last year. One reason appears to be the serious atmospheric pollution in China and the emerging economies: aerosols and superfine particles in suspension have a cooling effect. China has now begun to try and restrict the pollution, and it is high time: there are entire villages where nobody is over 50, as people increasingly die young of respiratory diseases or lung cancer.

Tread lightly 20 We recently went to a meeting on ‘Sustainable Social Practices Policy’, where research commissioned by DEFRA and the ESRC jointly was being discussed. The findings concerned approaches to ‘consumer behaviour’. Apart from the need to promote innovating technologies, the conclusions were couched in terms of ‘shifting consumer choices’ and changing ‘consumer behaviour’. But really most of what we should do, or not do, as consumers we know perfectly well: fly less, use less energy and other resources, insulate your loft and walls, eat more veg and less meat, turn the heating down and wear suitable clothing, eat local food rather than having it flown across the continents and so on. Do we really need being nudged by the powers that be?

A New Bournville Book—Bournville Through Time Members of the Bournville Society Committee have spent the last 18 months putting together a new publication devoted to the Bournville Estate to be published shortly by Amberley Publishing Ltd. An exhaustive trawl through many major picture archives together with the entire collection of Bournville Works Magazine from 1902 revealed fascinating information. The committee has sought to use pictures which have not been widely published and many will be viewed for the first time. Each historic picture is replicated in colour by a contemporary photograph taken from the same position where this has been possible. After appeals were made for personal photographs various local people consented to the use of their pictures and information and some even appear in this book. Each page deals with an aspect of the Bournville Estate which is accessible by everyone; there is a guide to walks around the area and sufficient information to interest a Bournville resident as well as a visitor. Although being generally welldocumented the authors have dispensed with a greater amount of Bournville history material than it is possible to include in this book. The cover design, front and back, was chosen by Bournville Society members by popular vote.

The sub-committee taking charge of this project has worked voluntarily and the proceeds from the sale of the book are to be used to improve the sound reinforcement system for all at Dame Elizabeth Hall where the Bournville Society presentations are held.

Just four miles from the centre of Britain’s second city, Bournville remains a quiet testimony to the vision of George Cadbury. Much of the history of Bournville is well documented and, compared with the City of Birmingham, little has changed. The distinctive character of the area is captured in the visual impact and variety of its architecture resulting in pleasing street scenes, which typifies the Bournville of today. The original village is historically relevant for its contrast with the then city centre slums and the mundane housing typical of working class housing provision in Edwardian Birmingham. From the outset it was planned to build housing for key factory personnel of the Cadbury chocolate factory. This unique selection of old and new images and informative captions is essential reading for anybody who knows and loves Bournville; a fascinating collection of photographs which traces some of the many ways in which Bournville has changed and developed over the last century.

Our programme for 2013-14 is set out below and includes the following—on Wednesday October 2nd 2013 at 7.30pm Peter Roach, Chief Executive of BVT will bring us up to date with all the developments in and around Bournville. Later in the year we will hear about Black Country mansions, Bournville Works History and a musical presentation for December. The Repertory Theatre history and renovation updates will feature in 2014 as will a presentation from Chedham’s Yard staff – Chedham’s Yard in Wellesbourne won the BBC’s Restoration programme award the year after Kings Norton Grammar School. Finally we’ll play host to author Fiona Joseph who will deliver the Beatrice Cadbury story with highlights from her recent publication.

Your chance to influence the modernisation of your Village Hall Over the past decade the Village Council and BVT have made significant progress in bringing the Village Hall up to 21st Century standards and into line with the requirements of new legislation. The first major project we carried out was the provision of ramps at the entrance and emergency exits of the Hall. This was closely followed by the conversion of the rear storeroom to provide toilet and shower facilities for people with disabilities and which also includes parent and toddler changing facilities. Both of these projects were planned by the Village Council’s Hall Management Team, but paid for by BVT’s Community Service Department, headed by Ms. Tessa Mitchell. Both were legal requirements.

Following on from these the Committee set about remodelling the gents’ toilets, turning it into a much lighter, brighter facility, in place of the dark and dismal room it once was. This remodelling also enabled us to build in a dedicated, fully equipped and secure cleaners store and in addition, the corridor, leading to the gents’ toilet, from the main hall, has been plastered, decorated and carpeted. The Committee have since had the ladies’ toilets refurbished to include and ambulatory toilet and have created a small storeroom from surplus available space. All of these works were paid for from monies raised through the hire of the Hall and a grant obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Over the past year BVT have had the electrical wiring of the Hall checked and certified.

They have also installed a drainage gulley around the patio, at the rear of the hall, which will help prevent the increasing occasions of water flowing under the back doors during the heavier down pours we are now experiencing. As I write ‘Abacus Lighting’ has just completed the installation of three lighting columns along the edge of the car park. This is a joint project between the Village Council and BVT designed to provide a safer environment for all hall users and their vehicles during the longer nights.

What of the future?

We are now giving thought as to what other improvements would be desirable, bearing in mind that our objectives are to make the Hall a more pleasant environment for users and to improve the facilities so that a wider range of meetings/activities can take place. In respect of major improvements, we are considering an extension to the front of the Hall. This would house a toilet and a new storeroom, which would replace the storeroom which was given over to house the facilities for people with disabilities/ parent and toddler changing We are also looking at extending the kitchen, by filling in the old boiler room, which constantly suffers from flooding. Such an extension could include cooking facilities so that lunch clubs could operate and would be beneficial for parties. The extension could also include a serving hatch accessible directly from the main hall. In addition the Tennis Club have expressed a wish to extend the Clubroom to provide more space. We would need significant grant aid to proceed with these extensions, but would also need to make some contribution from our own funds. However, before we undertake these or any other changes, we feel it is important to seek the views of you the residents as to what improvements you would like to see, and this is your chance to express your views.

A gentle reminder: Please can everyone park sensibly and not park their cars on grass verges and pavements. When vehicles are parked on pavements it causes unnecessary difficulties for wheelchair and pram users.

IMPORTANT NOTICE BOURNVILLE VILLAGE TRUST PERMISSION FOR ALTERATIONS Residents are reminded that any external proposed alterations to properties on the Estate must first have the consent of the Trust before work is commenced. In some cases, planning consent will also need to be sought from Birmingham City Council and it is always advisable to contact the Council to ascertain if the proposed alterations require Local Authority approval.

All residents are encouraged to refer to the Bournville Estate Design Guide which provides advice on the procedures and guidelines which the Trust refer to when considering alterations to their properties. An application, along with relevant fees, will need to be made when considering any of the following alterations: Single and two storey extension - Conservatory - Windows, doors, soffits, guttering - Roof Replacement Energy Saving Devices - Burglar alarms - Loft conversions & dormer windows - Porches Sheds and other garden structures - Driveway alterations - Garages and garage conversions The list is not comprehensive and you should check with the Trust if you are in any doubt before starting work. All alterations are considered on a case by case basis and applications are considered within the context of the property itself.
