CVs and cover letter guide

Packed

It’s become increasingly vital to stand out in a competitive job market. CVs in the UK come in all shapes and sizes and the format it will take will be down to you and the type of job you are applying for. We have created this document to equip you with top tips on how to sell yourself on paper (including how to write a cover letter) to impress any employer in the UK and land that placement or job!

Three top tips to creating your CV and cover letter

1 Creating

2 Instant feedback

Use this guide to help you get started on putting together your CV. Don’t just copy the templates in this guide! You need to ensure your CV is individual to you.

Upload your CV onto CV360, a free online tool that screens your CV for basic layout, formatting, spelling and grammar checks. You get instant, detailed feedback. Make sure to upload your CV in a Microsoft Word or .docx format and not a PDF.

3 Targeting

Book an appointment to speak with a professional to help you target your CV for the position you are applying for. By doing this you will significantly boost your chances of getting to interview.

Use strong action verbs

Use action verbs to make your CV and cover letter more engaging and descriptive. You need to sell yourself and your skills. A great way to do this is by the language you use. Avoid using words like ‘responsible for’ or ‘worked on’. Instead, think about what exactly you did and how you want to portray your experience. For example:

Accelerated membership growth of the Latin American Society by 50% in 6 months by targeting particular students

Developed productive relationships with academics, students and external speakers increasing student engagement by 20%

Attracted interest from employers and developed a successful networking event with colleagues in the Investment Society.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) used in recruitment

Who’s reading your CV?

Large organisations use AI to scan through the hundreds of CVs they receive. This process is called an applicant tracking system (ATS). Check with the organisation you are applying to, to see if your CV will be read by a person or go through ATS. Click here to see some tips on key things to consider. Click here for presenting skills in your online CV video.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) involves the use of keywords and phrases to make text on the web more noticeable and appear higher on search sites like Google. Employers regularly search online for potential employees. From using key words to linking your social media profile, read about some top tips on how to SEO your CV.

Using AI when applying for jobs

ChatGPT(amongst others) has become a common AI tool people are using to craft their CV and cover letters. Here at CareersBU we can see the benefit of using this tool to help get started, but we always suggest you have one of our trained advisers review and provide feedback before you decide to apply to any jobs! There’s nothing like having an authentic voice in your applications, something which can’t be replicated by a bot!

Example cover letter

Format should be as a formal business letter, no more than 1 page of A4 (approx.300-400 words max)

Paragraph 2

Why you want the role, why at their company –show your research!

John Hepworth

Help Age International Church Street London ECI

31st July 2024

Dear Mr Hepworth,

Where you can, get a name! Avoid “Dear Sir or Madam” if possible.

Sometimes the name will be on the job advert or you can call the HR team and ask for the hiring managers name.

RE: Marketing Assistant Vacancy REF. 2370

Don’t forget to use the cover letter check list on page 28 to make sure your letter meets employer expectations.

Sarah Rogers 15 Johnston Avenue Bournemouth Dorset, BH8 srogers@hotmail.com

Paragraph 1

State why you are writing and try to get across your interest in the opening sentences.

I was extremely interested to see the role of Marketing Assistant advertised on the Guardian Jobs website and am writing to apply for the position.

I have recently graduated from Bournemouth University with a BA (Hons) English (2:1) where as part of my course I completed a one year sandwich placement at a bespoke Events Company in London. Throughout my time at University I have been an active member of the RAG Committee taking responsibility for the marketing of all our events to the student body. I am now extremely keen to pursue a career in Marketing within the voluntary sector and having researched HelpAge International, I was particularly impressed by the innovative social media campaign “Age Demands Action”. I would relish the opportunity to develop the skills I have gained from my work experience and my degree whilst helping to improve conditions for the elderly, both nationally and internationally.

During my time at Everstone Events I managed a portfolio of corporate clients. This was a fast paced role where I worked as part of a small, close knit team to successfully deliver a variety of events. I was engaged in all aspects of event co-ordination, from coming up with new ideas to negotiating with suppliers and ensuring the smooth running of the event on the day. I maintained excellent relationships with our clients and communicated effectively with internal departments and a range of suppliers. I was also responsible for the maintaining the social media channels of Everstone Events, promoting the events on our client’s Facebook Page and snap chat channels. At University as Rag Co-ordinator as well as raising £1,000 for charity, I developed a social media strategy that increased our membership and helped us to smash the previous year’s fundraising targets by 20%.

I would love the chance to work with Help Age International. I imagine that raising awareness around the issues faced by the elderly is a real challenge and would very much like to develop my marketing skills to promote such an important cause. I am attaching my CV for your reference and very much look forward to hearing from you. I can be reached on 07793 200300 or via email srogers@hotmail.com.

With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

Final Paragraph Reiterate your enthusiasm and end on a positive upbeat note

Paragraph 3

Outline how your skills, attributes and experience match the job.

Speculative cover letter

A speculative cover letter is a letter sent to a specific company telling them you’re interested in working with them and enquiring whether there are any job openings that match your skills and experience.

Mr Ryan Smith 24 Greenacres Road

Bournemouth

BH5 2TG

Mr James Henderson IT Manager

Metalytic 12 Martin Street London SW1 3DZ

20 September 2024

Dear Mr Hepworth, Website Developer Placement

Where you can, get a name! Avoid “Dear Sir or Madam” if possible.

Sometimes the name will be on the job advert or you can call the HR Team and ask them for the hiring managers name.

Paragraph 1

The opening statement should set out why you’re writing the letter and explain what sort of role you’re looking for.

I am a second year student currently studying a BSc (Hons) degree in Computing at Bournemouth University who is looking to gain some industrial experience. I would like to undertake an industrial placement with Metalytic and am writing to you to see what opportunities there are for website developer placements and am attaching my CV for your attention and information.

From my knowledge of the IT sector, I am aware that Metalytic has a strong reputation in the industry. I was particularly attracted by the website development work you undertook for X Communications which I came across whilst undertaking research from a university project. I also understand that Metalytic has just signed a contract with Pep & Co to redesign their website and this would be the perfect opportunity for me to contribute the skills and knowledge I’ve gained.

As you can see from my CV as part of my degree course, I have studied Website Development and Coding units where I have achieved a grade of over 70%. In my spare time I volunteer for Dorset Mind as a Volunteer Website Developer. In addition, through my part-time job at Tesco as a Customer Service Adviser I have developed excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team and on my initiative as required.

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss my qualifications and skills for your company at an interview. I look forward to hearing from you and can be contacted on 07777 777777 or via email ryan. smith@gmail.com.

Yours sincerely,

Remember if you are writing to a named person please end the letter “Yours sincerely” and if you are writing to Sir or Madam please end the letter “Yours faithfully”

Final Paragraph Round up your letter. Reiterate your interest and enthusiasm in the role and indicate your desire for a personal interview.

Paragraph 2

Cover why you’re interest in working for the particular company. This is a good opportunity to show off your knowledge of the company.

Paragraph 3

Demonstrated how you can benefit the company with a few key highlights from your CV and show why you want to work there.

A chronological CV example

A chronological CV is the most straightforward format to use, and it is widely accepted by employers. It details your experiences in reverse chronological order. This CV contains the most common sections of a CV, but you could include other sections like voluntary work. Whatever style you use, ensure that you match the skills that an employer is looking for.

You don’t have to use a profile. If you do, ensure it clearly sets out your aims as well as your key selling points matching the criteria the employer is looking for.

There is no need to put the names of your referees on your CV

Consistency is key when writing your CV. This CV has very little white space and has a consistent format, consistent bold/nonbold text, a professional font choice and it does not use tables which makes it easier to read.

Achievements as with responsibilities – more detail.

The same interests as before, but in more detail to show more personality. You can use ‘I, me, my’ in the Interests section.

CVs for creative industries

When applying for roles in creative industries, employers might look for a creative approach to the CV format. A creative CV is commonly used when applying for roles which include design, TV production, art, technology, animation and VFX. Within advertising and marketing business related roles, some people have attracted an employer’s attention through using very unconventional CVs and been successful. They should be designed to showcase your creative skills for a specific role.

The more ‘creative’ your CV becomes the more of a high risk strategy it can be so make sure it reflects the style of the organisation you are applying to and genuinely represents your character. The more people you show it to in the relevant industry for creative and sector specific feedback the better.

Types of creative CV

There are a variety of CV depending on what creative skills you are wanting to demonstrate.

Video CVs

Infographic CV

More employers are using video interviewing as part of their recruitment process, especially after the pandemic. The video CV doesn’t replace the paper CV but is another way to approach employers. This Guardian article provides an insight into preparing video CVs.

Here’s an example of a video CV created by Graeme Anthony which landed him a job in PR. Graeme’s video was covered by the BBC, and he found work in PR quickly, but left the video up to ‘inspire others to demonstrate their natural creativity and secure work’.

An infographic CV uses layout, colour, icons, and font styling to organise content. The design is important but don’t forget the content is just as crucial so make sure you tailor the CV to cover skills required for that role. Click here for some examples.

Alternative ways to approach employers within the Creative Industries

Speculative approaches for jobs in this sector are common, so demonstrating your creativity is a good way to get noticed in a competitive market. Many employers (e.g. SMEs or media and television production companies) have less formalised recruitment processes and smaller recruitment budgets than larger corporate organisations. They tend to recruit from within or through their contacts. These unadvertised roles are part of “The Hidden Job Market”. Being able to write a great speculative covering letter will help you to approach these kinds of companies to find out about any opportunities that might come up. Speculative approaches are all about selling your skills, motivation and your personality to a company/employer who doesn’t necessarily have clearly advertised job vacancies or work experience programmes.

A media production cover letter should be brief and be written something like this in the main text of the email

Do not attach cover letter as separate document when applying for media production jobs

a subject

Dear (search employer name)

I am writing to offer my services at XX company as I love XX output and would love to bring my skills to your team.

As you can see I have XX relevant experience, and my CV details my work at NAME THREE TOP BRANDS / COMPANIES. (If no relevant experience then give a clear mission statement aligning yourself to brands - i.e. My intention is to work my way up directing output such as NAME BRAND RELEVANT TO COMPANY. I attach my CV and this link to my video CV / online portfolio.

Yours sincerely...
