Welcome to

BOURNEMOUTH ARTS BY THE SEA FESTIVAL

14 Oct – 21 Oct 2017

Cover illustration by Drew Millward

We’re delighted to welcome you to the seventh Arts by the Sea Festival! Our week-long celebration includes a wealth of talented artists and a multitude of intriguing events in Bournemouth, many of them free. Watch out for some seriously curious characters, installations and bespoke transformations: from wandering lionfish and fiery laboratories to a watery takeover of Bournemouth’s Town Hall—to name just a few!

@artsbythesea

Three winners of our 2017 Open Call were selected to respond to the theme ‘Plastic Beach’ and the global issue of ocean plastic. From light-art forged from recycled sea debris, through to performance and film-based work, we are very proud to be hosting diverse commissions from Mick Stephenson, Paul O’Conner and performance art duo Kerith Ogden and Bee Jasco (read more on pages 22 & 23).

We’ll be highlighting environmental issues elsewhere within our programme, which coincides with the launch of our own environmental strategy. This year we have relaunched the Festival Fringe with an additional 20+ experiences, including One World by the Sea, which will celebrate diversity by bringing an internationally focused programme of events together. We wish you an inspiring festival experience at Arts by the Sea 2017. We hope you enjoy the festival as much as we have enjoyed planning it! Andrea Francis – Festival Director and Councillor Pat Oakley – Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Leisure and Arts

Kokoro will perform the acclaimed Jonathan Lloyd commissioned score, conducted by Mark Forkgen. In his seminal thriller Blackmail, Hitchcock portrays a rich evocation of London Life. A highpoint in his early career, Hitchcock would later revisit and surpass the knife murder in Blackmail with those scenes featured in both The 39 Steps (1935) and, most famously, Psycho (1960). This performance is co-presented with White Lantern Film. A post-show talk in the foyer will follow this performance.

OPEN CALL ARTISTS: Brand New Work at The Arts by the Sea Festival

Complete our survey at artsbythesea.co.uk/survey

@artsbythesea

We are delighted to present the three winners of the 2017 Artist Open Call – Mick Stephenson, Paul O’Conner and performance art duo Kerith Ogden and Bee Jasco. Each artist submitted an outstanding proposal for creating a new piece of art which expresses the theme of this year’s Arts by the Sea Festival, “Plastic Beach”, bringing attention to the global problem of marine pollution. Using very contrasting media, this issue will be explored by our open call artists via static installation, solar powered film and dystopian performance art.

TURNING THE TIDE by Mick Stephenson

Sat 14 October 12noon–11pm Sun 15 October 12noon–10pm Bournemouth Lower Gardens BH2 6DT FREE

22

Arts by the Sea’s Lead Open Call Commission and World Premiere. Plastic is one of the most versatile materials ever produced, but its impact on the environment is incalculable. Turning the Tide is an immersive large scale light installation by Mick Stephenson, which invites the visitor to walk amongst a sea of plastic. The installation and the surrounding area will be bathed in light, representing the ocean and a series of cubes will appear as if washed up on the beach.’

Sat 14 October 12noon–2pm/4–6pm/7–8pm Bournemouth Lower Gardens BH2 6DT FREE

THE ROCKPOOL by Kerith Ogden and Bee Jasco

Sat 14 October 12noon–4pm/6–10pm Bournemouth Lower Gardens BH2 6DT (Sat)

Sun 15 October 12noon–4pm/6–8.30pm Bournemouth Town Square BH2 6ED (Sun) FREE The Rockpool is a sideshow hook-a-duck stall set in a fictional future. Marine life has evolved an ability to consume the discarded plastics of our present world; the plastic has become part of them, and the rockpools are filled with living hybrid chimeras such as plastic chip-fork sea urchins, colourful drink-bottle sea anemones, seabirds that have bred with yellow plastic ducks, battered Lego fish and plastic-bag seaweed.

Housed inside a small but perfectly formed solar powered cinema, a series of screenings will highlight the issues of plastics in our oceans and how the actions being taken to clean up the mess. Audience members will receive a leaflet on the issue raised in the films (as well as free, tasty popcorn!)

Plastic Beach

2017 Projects

The synthetic quality of modern life has made its mark in the seas. Over the last 30 years, millions of tons of plastic have entered the oceans. Global production of plastic now stands at 288 million tonnes per year, of which 10% ends up in the ocean. Oil, radioactive waste, chemical sewage and most visibly – plastics, have found their way into the oceans and stomachs of its marine life. Arts by the Sea 2017 is highlighting this issue through our theme Plastic Beach. We hope you’re entertained but also informed by our performances, and leave the festival inspired by what we can all do to help the environment.

• Sustainable travel. Find more information about sustainable travel in our area at www.gettingabout.co.uk. We’ve also mapped all the cycle parking in the town centre for you on the Green tab on our website.

Our commitment The Arts by the Sea festival is committed to reducing its own environmental impact and to ‘leave no trace’. We also pledge to show our support for farmers and producers in developing countries by promoting Bournemouth’s Fairtrade Town status. Check out the Green tab on our website artsbythesea.co.uk, to find out what we and our partners are doing and to learn more about this year’s projects.

• Refill your bottle. Help stop waste from plastic bottles and unrecyclable coffee cups by bringing your own. We’ve mapped all the town centre refill locations on the Green tab on our website. • Where to recycle. Recycling is really tricky in the town centre as bins often become contaminated by unrecyclable waste. You can recycle in bins between Happy Land Arcade and Harry Ramsden’s on the Seafront, or do your bit by taking your waste with you and recycling at home

BIKE MOT & SECURITY TAGGING Sat 14 & Sun 15 October 9am–5pm Pavilion Terrace BH1 2BU FREE Why not cycle to the festival and give your bike and MOT or get it tagged by Dorset Police on Pavilion Terrace.

There will be light refreshments in a friendly atmosphere, with networking opportunities for artists, producers, students and anyone who wants to learn more.

WILLY & WALLY

Sun 15 October 2pm £5 Bikes vs Cars depicts a global crisis that we all deep down know we need to talk about: climate, Earth’s resources, cities where the entire surface is consumed by the car. An ever-growing, dirty, noisy traffic chaos. The bike is a great tool for change, but the powerful interests who gain from the private car invest billions each year on lobbying and advertising to protect their business. In the film, we meet activists and thinkers who are fighting for better cities, who refuse to stop riding despite the increasing number killed in traffic.

A PLASTIC OCEAN Sun 15 October 3.50pm

by Cocoloco

Shelley Theatre BH5 1LX

Sun 15 October 1.30pm/3pm/5.30pm

£6

Bournemouth Lower Gardens BH2 6DT FREE In a nod to the Arts by the Sea Festival theme, Plastic Beach, Willy and Wally are drowning in mountains of plastic, resigned to the fact that they will soon be swallowed entirely. As well as talking a load of rubbish, they perform amusing, poignant monologues and cutting dialogue with the main focus on climate change denial.

A Plastic Ocean is a new feature-length adventure documentary that brings to light the consequences of our global disposable lifestyle. It was once believed that we could use plastic and throw it away, with negligible impact to humans and animals. This turns out to be untrue. The reality will astound viewers – just as it did our adventurers – who captured neverbefore-seen images of marine life, plastic pollution, and its ultimate consequences for human health. 5.35pm Enjoy a post show talk with a member of the film’s production team.
