BEA Events Year 8 Activity Day For this year’s Activity Day Year 8 went to the RAF Museum and we saw models of famous aeroplanes. When we went there we learnt about how the aeroplanes work and how they were used in WWI and WWII. The museum contained lots of planes that fought in the wars and there were descriptions of what the planes were used for. There was a Spitfire experience where you sat in a Spitfire and saw all the controls. There was also a British Aircraft Corporation Lightning F6 which were used for air defence to intercept unidentified flying objects in UK air space. The F6 is the longest serving aircraft in the Royal Air Force. Our opinion of the whole experience was that it was full of facts and we saw what planes were used in these wars which was very interesting. Zoe, George and Esha, Year 8

Beer and Band Night BEA’s PFA put on an adult only Beer and Band Night on Friday 11 May. This night was well attended and enjoyed by BEA parents and staff as well as others from the Bourne End community. The dance floor was in front of the stage and supporters of BEA set up the bar at the back of the hall. Atmosphere built up throughout the evening - the hall was full, the music loud and good times were had. Straight Eight played a blend of soul and dance classics. Although mainly from the 60's, there were a few surprise re-works from later decades. The Supporters of Bourne End Academy put on a great event and are now looking for new members to join for September. Saffy, Year 8

Our Sixth Form Physics trip to CERN - Switzerland

On Friday 23 March, BEA Physics students and one member of staff joined up with WHS Physics staff and students and set off on a two day trip to CERN from Heathrow Airport travelling to Geneva Airport, Switzerland. After unpacking at the Youth Hostel, the students had the chance to walk down to admire the stunning views of Lake Geneva; the weather was amazing. Saturday was an early start, spending the day visiting CERN. CERN is a working Particle Physics Laboratory and the students went on tours having the workings of six accelerators explained to them. This gave them an opportunity to see how they are used in Physics research and experiments and how this has helped science advancements. Amazingly, CERN is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web. Afterwards, we went to the Zoo Gardens in Geneva which overwhelmed us with different species of plants and animals such as flamingos and a peacock. After a wonderful journey visiting CERN and the zoo, what could be better than to stand outside the gates in front of the United Nation’s building with all of the flags raised up high with pride? We then encountered the Tipping Chair which symbolises the balance between democracy and terrorism. On Sunday we were up and out to visit the Geneva Science Museum which had fascinating facts about the fundamentals of scientific discoveries. Then we walked past Lake Geneva and into the Old Town for some sightseeing and relaxing. In the late afternoon we headed back to the airport, having experienced an amazing and wonderful weekend full of exploration and adventure. Himnish Year 12 & Mrs Brumann

BEA Student Leadership Team

At Bourne End Academy, Year 12s have been campaigning for positions to lead the student body over the next academic year. Students were put through their paces and had to write letters of application, speak to staff and students before an election and then have an interview with Mrs Jacobson and Mr Sheehan. All the applicants did a stellar job and I am pleased to announce the Student Leadership Team for 2018-19:

Anya Gvero: Head Student – Whole School I’m Anya Gvero and I’m in Year 12 at BEA. I study Geography, Dance and Sociology at A-level. I’ve been at this school since the start of Year Seven and have really enjoyed being able to grow up in such a friendly environment. I’ve also really enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in Global Rock over the last few years. I was really happy to have been awarded with Head Student as it means I can ensure others have the same positive experience I did at this school. My role as Head Student will involve interlinking year groups and being a voice for students’ ideas. I’m excited to start the role.

Lyuba Angelova: Head Student – Sixth Form My name is Lyuba and I am the new Head Student for Sixth Form. I am currently studying Business, Sociology and Health & Social. The role of Head Student of Key Stage 5 is very exciting to me as I have good relations with the people in Sixth Form, therefore I’m excited to see changes happening together for the better of the Sixth Form and the school. One of my roles is to arrange and plan prom, I am very excited by this as planning events is one of my interests. Another one of my roles is to ensure that everyone’s wants, needs and wishes are met to a certain point by voicing collective concerns to high authority.

Theo Taylor: Head Student – Key Stage 4 My name is Theodore Taylor and I’m a student at Bourne End Academy currently studying Alevels. I consider myself to be kind and considerate towards my peers. I gain a very strong sense of accomplishment when I help others and this position will allow me to do just that. I’m so excited to become the Head Student of Key Stage 4 because I believe that this will be the perfect opportunity to interact with students lower down in the school. I look forward to the opportunity to be a role model for those around me and I would like to pass down my experience to others.

Georgia Burnham: Head Student – Key Stage 3 When I found out that I was appointed as Head Student of Key Stage 3 I was ecstatic as I see this as an amazing opportunity to give back to the school that has given me so much over the past five years. I feel like this role is perfect for me as I am excited to make the new Year Sevens feel welcome and make the adjustment to secondary school as seamless as possible. In this position I will also try to prepare the Year Nines for the intensity of GCSE’s. I will strive to be a positive role model to instil a good work ethic into the younger years. I am really looking forward to working with Key Stage 3 alongside Ms Witts and Mr Kalyan.

The World of Performing Arts Global Rock Finals On 27 April 2018, after all the extra rehearsals and with new set, over 70 students and staff went on a trip to Portsmouth to compete in the Rock Challenge Finals. Following their success at the Wycombe Swan heats, placed 1st, the team went with high spirits. The atmosphere was electric! The coach left at around 6:30am, with everyone on board with bags, pillows, blankets and more.

Once the team arrived we got registered and entered the auditorium. After we watched a few performances it was the morning production meeting which included music, dancing and even an air guitar challenge. We were then introduced to our dressing rooms and had a chance to chill.

Time to do our makeup! After a couple more performances it was our turn. Everyone got into place and then lights, camera, action! We performed twice, both as good as each other. Eventually an hour later we actually performed for real. Once our performance was starting everyone was excited that it was happening now.

Then we had to wait… we were brought into another room with other schools so that we could hear the results. Everyone was silent… waiting for the results to be said. We ended up winning (awards). Now it was time for the final results… 5th place… 4th place … and then the speaker said ‘3rd place ….. Bourne End Academy.’ We were all so proud of what we had achieved!

Unfortunately, it was then time to go home, we boarded the bus once again and the majority of us slept through the journey. The day was a successful day after what we had achieved. Get ready for next year’s Global Rock Challenge 2019!

‘I think everyone involved did amazingly, having students from Year 7 to Year 12 made it special and unique.’ – Miss Arnold George, Alice, Ellie and Brooke, Year 8

Cheerleading Club Competition At the beginning of the Spring Term we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to join a cheerleading club, which was run after school on a Wednesday for Years 7 – 9 by a company called Kobika. During these sessions we got to grips with many different skills such as: low and high level lifts, tumbling, round offs and floor routines and skills. We used these sessions to work towards an inter-school competition involving other secondary schools in the Wycombe area. We worked hard for several months to perfect our skills and routines which we used in the competition. The competition was held at the Wycombe Swan Theatre on the 17 May 2018. When we arrived at the theatre the atmosphere was exciting with friendly rivalry between the schools, including St Michaels, Wycombe High and Sir William Borlase. As we sat watching the other teams perform the nerves started to kick in, however, we didn’t let them take over. When our turn came we performed a clean routine with energy and passion. All our hard work had paid off as we went on to win our category for the second year in a row!! Working as a team and across year groups was very enjoyable as we met and worked with different people and got to know each other. We hope that next year is as good or even better. Millie, Year 9

On 24 May a few students were chosen to take part in a Performing Arts Workshop with Layton Williams. Layton is an English actor who has played Billy in Billy Elliot The Musical and Angel in Rent and has just finished playing Seaweed in Hairspray the Musical UK tour! Layton led the workshop and the students learnt lots of different things. They learnt how to warm up properly so that they wouldn’t injure themselves, they learnt dance combinations from the corner and different techniques they should use to help them improve. The main activity that the students took part in was learning a dance routine for Hairspray! The song was The Nicest Kids in Town. Once the students had learnt the routine they then had to perform it in small groups. Not only did they have to do the steps correctly they also had to perform using their faces. After learning the routine, the students had the chance to ask questions about what it is like to perform and dance as a career and what they could do to get there as well. It was such a great opportunity for the students and they learnt a lot from it! Charlotte, Year 8

Lord of the Flies – A Dramatic Production For this year’s dramatic production, students from all years were welcomed to audition and perform in the production of Lord of the Flies. Lord of the Flies is a book that has been transformed into movies and plays about a group of kids that have crash landed onto a desert island, with no adults in sight - filled with plenty of morals and attitude! From killing pigs to people, this play was filled with excitement, especially from being a part of it. Doing rehearsals has not only helped me, but many others with their confidence and acting skills. Rehearsals have been a great place to make new friends and be a part of something fun. Mr Price was the director of this play having directed DNA and Sweeney Todd in the past. Having him as our teacher was great as he encouraged us to incorporate our own ideas and work really well as a team. Mr Price even went out and found us some old aeroplane seats and other parts for props! Although casting was limited this time, it gave a great opportunity for GCSE students to test their skills. For the next production, that is still yet to be decided, we would like more students in younger years to take part as the majority were Year 10. However, the outcome was great and we all worked hard to achieve an enjoyable performance for everyone who watched it on the 4 July. Doing something such as Lord of the Flies really boosted my confidence and many others got something out of it too. Hopefully more will join and make our productions even better than ever before.

Coming up is our annual Summer Show, where many talented students get a chance to perform to their best ability, whether it be a piece of Dance, Drama or Music. Many Year 7s like to take part in this show as it is a brilliant event to participate in to demonstrate their talents and make a name for themselves. We have some snippets of Bourne End Bullets (Cheerleading), Come Alive (Claytonbury) and the Bourne End Academy Dance Team with Hairspray. The dance, Hairspray, was a dance workshop that Layton Williams came and taught us from the West End Show, Hairspray. He was such an inspirational person and he taught us so much about his experience and journey through the Performing Arts Industry. The Summer Soiree clearly has a big reputation, due to the unbounded energy of students engaged in it. The Choir will also be performing in the show. This year Mrs Smyth is making the performances unbelievably atmospheric, it’s starting to really take shape. Having a brilliant talent show like this twice a year is really good for the students to come out of their shell. Many students have done these shows here at BEA and have always said that it is so fun and exciting for them. Sadly the Year 11s had their last show at BEA, last March (Easter Extravaganza). A lot of them had solos and joined in with the event, as well as the Year 10s actually managing the show themselves! I think it’s safe to say, that we put on a range of different shows here at Bourne End Academy, and that they all are really popular and well organised. Our audiences are always so excited to see the students performing on the stage in the hall. With Year 11 gone there will be more solos and groups performances from younger years, so watch out! Saffy, Year 8

Sporting Success KS3 District Athletics On 18 June, following from the Athletics League, the Year 7 and 8 district athletics competition took place. Many local schools came to compete at the Little Marlow Track. This included: Great Marlow, John Hampden, Sir William Borlase, Sir William Ramsay, Wycombe High, Saint Michaels, Godstowe, Wycombe Abbey, Cressex, Beaconsfield and High Crest.

This event is a great way for our students to bond and get to know other schools. There was great competition in both track and field events. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and were happy to take part. Mrs Holmes, has proudly explained that ‘this is the most successful year in a long time’. Despite this and after all their efforts, unfortunately, Bourne End Academy did not place this time, but now we’ve seen the competition. In any case, it was the participation that really made our school thrive! “I was nervous to compete but once I got confidence from my friends, I realised how fun and exciting it was.” –Alice Year 8. “I found it great because I like competing against other schools; I think everyone really tried their best.” –Brooke Year 8. “I enjoyed my experience at athletics and I can’t wait for next year!” –Ellie Year 8. Ellie, Brooke, Alice and George, Year 8

Beyond the School The Royal Wedding Working for a charity can have its perks, aside from knowing you’re making a difference! As my mum works for a charity, herself and I were lucky enough to be invited to attend the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which took place on 19 May. I was very excited but very nervous so refused to tell anyone about the invitation! Luckily, we were guaranteed warm weather and that meant we could get excited about getting dressed up for the occasion, even though there was no actual dress-code put in place by Windsor Castle. We woke up very early and were queueing to enter the grounds by 8:00 and sat down by 9:30. The guests, which included all the royals and a number of celebrities, arrived between 9:30 and 11:00. Their outfits and presence was incredible. Thank goodness for technology, I was messaging my sister the guest list for the entire time – I may have been a bit too excited when I saw Serena Williams walking past… Although there were no screens to watch the ceremony, there were speakers everywhere. The atmosphere was buzzing, so full of excitement. Arguably, my favourite part was Bishop Curry’s sermon because you had no idea what he would say next! After the ceremony, when all the guests had left, the public who were invited to watch from within the grounds had the amazing opportunity to go inside to see the chapel. Each guest received a commemorative gift bag, which contained water, shortbread, chocolate, a magnet and a badge. We were also given a copy of the programme that detailed the schedule and the script of the ceremony. I’m extremely grateful that I got to witness this special day! Rebekah Blazey, Year 12

Is it Coming Home? The statistics that imply England could (possibly) win the World Cup England’s squad (of 23 players) are as capable of winning the World Cup as France according to sports data consultancy 21st Club. England’s young independent squad contains league winners; contestants of the Champion’s League and players voted Player of the Month and Player of the Year. THE TEAM: England squad – in full 1. Jordan Pickford 2. Kyle Walker 3. Danny Rose 4. Eric Dier 5. John Stones 6. Harry Maguire 7. Jesse Lingard 8. Jordan Henderson 9. Harry Kane 10. Raheem Sterling 11. Jamie Vardy

13. Jack Butland 14. Danny Welbeck 15. Gary Cahill 16. Phil Jones 17. Fabian Delph 18. Ashley Young 19. Marcus Rashford 20. Dele Alli 21. Ruben Loftus-Cheek 22. Trent Alexander-Arnold 23. Nick Pope

On the 18 June 2018, England beat Tunisia 2-1 after the skipper, Harry Kane, scored 2 goals. This win put them into second due to goal difference after Belgium beat Panama 3-0. Panama are the least likeliest to win the World Cup. Some bets say 5000/1. If England are to win the World Cup (with odds of 11/1) they must get victories against teams like Panama so they guarantee a place in the knockout stages. However, if they win against Belgium as well, the teams they play in the knockout stages will be the teams who place second in the group stages which should be a little bit easier.

Due to the data we gathered from the database, England have got an amazing chance if their team are able to increase the team chemistry throughout the tournament. We presume that Gareth Southgate, England Manager, has already started this in training, learning new tactics and health and fitness processes. This might be a fairly obvious point to make, but comparing England’s performance as a team against a prediction model based on individual player ratings — 21st Club assesses players according to their club, playing position, minutes played, goals, assists, and plus-minus contribution (a sports stats that evaluates a player’s impact on the game) — it's clear that the Three Lions are an exemplar of a team that's noticeably better than the sum of its parts.

In addition to all of this, Harry Kane with a fabulous hat trick, is currently on top for the golden boot. Watch this space… Thom, Year 8.

Life After BEA UCAS, UNIFROG, UNIVERSITY, APPRENTICESHIP If someone says to you to write a page all about yourself and your attributes – oh, and then asks you to make sure it links to your subjects; it shows the sort of person you are; what you want to be in life; ensuring that the opening sentence is eye-catching and then make it unique; most of you would have no idea where to begin and probably think you don’t do anything interesting to write about, right? That is how we felt when Mrs Mattingley told us it was that ‘exciting’ time when we would write a personal statement about ourselves, on our journey to life after the Sixth Form. Although it was daunting at first, we were given a booklet to prompt us and make us think about why we chose a subject, or who inspires us. In addition, we were asked to think about what we watch on the television and what have we learnt from our jobs. Suddenly, we have a book of information and it is all about us! The next challenge of course, is deciding what we want to do. University applications have to be ready so soon in the Autumn of Year 13 and Year 12 has just flown by! We are now creating lists and ideas on potential careers. We use a great site called UNIFROG, which enables us not only to explore the courses and apprenticeships, but tells us useful information like what salary we might earn, if we followed a certain path; or what the social life of the area is so we can select where we spend the next, very important few years of our lives. We are on an exciting and daunting process and will update you later on University, UCAS, Unifrog and Apprenticeship selections; so that when the time comes where it’s your turn, it shouldn’t feel quite so scary. Reycelle and Georgia, Year 12

Goodbye Mrs Jacobson! At the end of this academic year, our Headteacher Mrs Jacobson will sadly depart from Bourne End Academy. Mrs Jacobson has been a part of BEA for a number of years and her kind-hearted nature will be missed dearly. I have interviewed Mrs Jacobson, to gather her thoughts and feelings about leaving our school. Please see below the questions that Mrs Jacobson was asked and her responses. How has your time been at Bourne End Academy? "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bourne End Academy and seeing the students progress and learn has made me feel very proud." What did you like best about your time at BEA? "I have had lots of highlights and cannot pick out just one. However, it is when I spend time with students that I feel most rewarded. I have enjoyed lots of good discussions and shared much laughter." What has improved most about Bourne End Academy since you have been here? "There have been lots of improvements including facilities. Most importantly students now Believe in themselves, Engage in their learning and have high Aspirations. This is due to the excellent teaching and learning and support from my fantastic staff. " Do you have any advice for the students when you leave? "Continue to believe, work very hard and aim high. Embrace everything your school has to offer you. Show respect to each other and yourself. Thank you for being such wonderful students." I strongly believe Mrs Jacobson has played a massive role in our growth through secondary school so far, and I hope her words of rejoice to stay with us throughout. However, despite how hard it will be for us all, we will continue to try our hardest on her behalf. We wish Mrs Jacobson the best of luck for what her future holds. Haarisah, Year 7
