School Fete Great fun was had by all at this year’s Summer Fete. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. A scorcher of a day. Thank you to everyone that came and supported the event. We raised a total of £1,900. One of the most popular games was soak the teacher – a big thank you to Mr Jaumbocus, Mr Blazey and Mr Bannon for being the targets – watch out for more teachers next year! Karen McKenzie, Chair of PFA

Imperial War Museum Visit On the last Friday of the school year most of Year 9 went to London to the Imperial War Museum. We were able to see equipment, vehicles and uniforms that many participants in war from soldiers, airmen and nurses used in the First and Second World Wars and more recent ones as well. It was great to be able to go off and discover the History behind how wars start and the effects on people both on the front line and at the home front. Throughout Year 9 we were studying and researching into the causes and consequences of World War One and World War Two and to see some remains from these events was a great experience and a fantastic way to end Year 9.

Amy Carr Year 10

Whipsnade Zoo The last Friday of the year we took a trip to Whipsnade Zoo. At around 9 o’clock we were on the coach and ready to leave, we were all so excited to get going. When we arrived we got into our groups for the day, we were all like lions raring to go! First we went to see the great gorilla, then the penguins, we saw so many different animals, too many to name! Towards the end of the day we all got back on the coach ready to travel back to school. Everyone that went on the trip to the Zoo had such an amazing day – what a brilliant way to end Year 7. Millie Pusey, Year 7

Summer Soiree The Summer Soiree was the last show of the year for the Performing Arts department before we finished for the summer. The show included lots of different acts varying from larger group dances, soloist singers and smaller groups showing off their acting skills. It was great to see many different year groups getting involved presenting what amazing talent we have here at BEA. There will be lots of different clubs and activities for you to get involved in this year within the Performing Arts department, so we hope to see you there! Miss Herbert, Teacher of Dance

Chessington Trip Each July the ARP Students are invited to an end of term trip to Chessington World of Adventures. This year the weather was very hot, so armed with drinks, hats and sun cream we headed off at 9am. The students were accompanied by the ARP staff and Dr Palmer (School Business Manager) who kindly drove the minibus for us. The students and staff were in groups for fast rides, medium rides and slow rides. Fast rides included Rameses Revenge and Cobra; luckily for the students in that group Dr Palmer loved all the fast rides! Medium rides included Scorpion Express and Dragon Falls, while the slow riders went on the Bubble Works and had a walk around the zoo. Everyone met at 1pm for lunch at Market Square and the students were able to go to the shop to buy any souvenirs they wanted; although most students bought ice creams! After lunch the fast riders went straight back on the rides while the medium and slow riders went off to the Education Centre to do an activity called Crime Scene Investigation. The students had to solve a mystery about which animal had stolen food from another animal. They were given visual clues and a work sheet to record the evidence to help work out who the culprit was. It turned out to be a meerkat! After the mystery was solved it was back on the rides for the last hour before heading back to school. Hot and tired the minibus was a lot quieter going home than it was on the way to the theme park!!

PSHCE Day PHOTO-FLIGHT OPPORTUNITIY & VALUES At Bourne End Academy we embrace and celebrate diversity in ethnicity, gender, sexuality, faith and financial status. We have been working with the students to actively engage in British Values: - Democracy - The rule of law - Individual liberty - Mutual respect - Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs Students also were creating our own set of BEA values that underpin and support our school motto: - Believe - Engage - Aspire This theme was the strand running through a day on Thursday 14 July, when the whole school took part in a dedicated PSHCE Day (Personal, Health, Citizenship and Social Education). Students experienced a variety of activities and external speakers discussing a wide range of issues. They included: understanding gender identity and sexuality; awareness of the risks around drugs; mental well-being; impact of human trafficking; healthy and safe relationships; how to tackle discrimination and bullying. We feel strongly that students should have a strong self-identity and be proud of who they are and be accepted within our community. To start the day we got all students in all years and every member of staff, onto the astro-turf to create a visual reminder of the work the students were doing, by forming the words ‘PROUD TO BEA ME’. The students were truly amazing and took the event very seriously. It was a real feeling of community and working together whilst we all found our place in ‘words’. We then waited for a helicopter from Booker Airfield, to fly over us and take aerial photos. The atmosphere was exciting and this visual impact is mirrored within our community with our high expectations and standards around tolerance, respect and acceptance. Miss R Rippin PSHCE Leader

Summer School My first week of the summer holidays was spent at BEA. It was filled with really fun lessons. In Science we made this really cool goo, which was both a solid and a liquid. I was then soon to discover that my best friend from nursery school was going to be in my form, which was the best surprise ever! We toured around the school, which helped me in September to find my lessons. It also helped me get to know the teachers and for them to get to know me too. Thank you to all the teachers for reassuring me that September wasn't going to be such a worry after all. Freya Aitken year 7

This year’s Summer School was awesome! We had lots of fun and creative lessons which were designed by teachers. We also had lots of Year 7 mentors who helped us find our way around the school. The lessons we took part in included: -

Science where we tested different types of materials by putting them over bunsen burners. We also made our own rockets! Physical where we played rounders Spanish where we learnt the colours in Spanish Product Design where we made catapults

We did all of these fun activities as well as much, much more. I really enjoyed my time at Summer School 2016! Brooke Sanders year 7

Year 6 Induction Days My story so far at Bourne End Academy... It all started at my induction day. I was a little worried, as I didn't know anyone in my form and making new friends seemed like too big a challenge to take on. However, the big assembly gave me such a warm welcome, that I felt ready for such challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and was really looking forward to being part of such a wonderful school. Freya Aitken year 7

Every year, Bourne End Academy invite a small number of Year 6 students to an additional induction day. The students are selected by the primary school they attend and it is primarily for students who may have additional needs or feel a little more anxious about transferring to secondary school. Thirteen students attended on the 4 July and enjoyed a variety lessons such a Food Technology, Dance, Science and History. Below are a couple of comments from the students: “I had fun cooking noodles and making friends on the transition day. The day helped me feel less nervous for starting here” – Mason Madzimbamuto “I came to the induction day and found it really useful because it has helped me find my way around the school” – Billy Barrett Mrs Hassell, Leader of Inclusion

The Parents’ Association: ‘Supporters of BEA’ Forthcoming Events: We’re in the process of planning this year’s events. The first event will be on Friday 14 October, this will be a Family Bingo night for all families in Years 7, 8 and 9. We had such great feedback from last year’s event that we wanted to make it an annual one. Back by popular demand we have Mr Jaumbocus as the bingo caller, along with his enthusiastic Maths department. We are planning a Quiz Night, Ladies Indulgence Evening and Summer Fete, please look out for the dates. In our first year we have raised a total of £5,693. We have already purchased an outside table tennis table for the sports department which is for all pupils to use. We will keep you all updated with how we will use the funds. Of course our events are only a success if they are supported. Please continue to support us. Our AGM for this year was held on 5 October. We have a great PTA team and would love to have more members. If you are interested in joining us please make contact through the school office. Karen McKenzie, Chair of SBEA

A Taste of Secondary School In the summer term, Bourne End Academy hosted two Taster days for 120 Year 5 students from local primary schools on each day. They were from St Paul’s, Loudwater, Claytons, Carrington and Juniper Hill. Day 1 was a STEM day with the children doing mathematical activities using spaghetti and marshmallows; making ear-phone holders with a laser-cutter and 3-D printer in Technology, and going on a journey of sound in Science. Day 2 was a day of dance, acting, music and art workshops and at the end of the day the students performed an extract from High School Musical. The students’ ability to learn their parts in such a short amount of time, was amazing. The artists in the group learnt how to make promotional programmes and posters. All of these were ably supported by our team of Year 9 mentors from BEA to ensure that all were having a good and safe day – including a highlight when the children had a penalty shoot-out on the Astro-turf. Mrs Jacobson, Headteacher, said “The energy and excitement in the room was almost palpable, as these pupils participated in an action-packed day giving them new skills and a different learning experience.” A happy and successful day for our prospective future students, as well as an excellent day for the journey of our new mentors, who are now in Year 10 and supporting the new Year 7 students. Mr P Kalyan, Head of Year 7 and Transition
