CINEMA All screenings take place in the Canyon Theater @ Main. No tickets are required.

DORIS’ SUNDAY MATINEES A Christmas Story | Sunday, December 2, 1 p.m. (98 min.) Cinema Social Directed by Bob Clark, featuring Peter Billingsley, Darren McGavin, Melinda Dillon (1983). A boy’s dream Christmas present is a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun, as he tries to get the message subconsciously to his parents. Based on the novel “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash” by Jean Shepard. Ovaltine and fortune cookies are served. Boulder Ballet presents “Nutty Nutcracker” before the screening following the pajama contest.

Modern Times | Sunday, January 6, 1 p.m. (87 min.) Directed by Charlie Chaplin, featuring Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Chester Conkin (1936). An assemblyline worker loses his mind after being used as a test subject for an automatic feeding machine designed to boost worker productivity. Hospitalized and released, he befriends a waif girl. Together they experience joy and misfortune. Chaplin’s late, first sound film is heavy on sound effects and essentially without dialog. Music composed by Charlie Chaplin.

THURSDAY CINEMA La Roue (The Wheel) | Thursday, November 8, 7 p.m. (120 min.) Directed by Abel Gance, featuring Séverin-Mars, Ivy Close, Gabriel de Gravone (France—1923). A railway man rescues a baby girl after a train crash, raises her as a daughter and eventually falls in love with her. Of the film, Jean Cocteau said “There is cinema before and after La Roue, as there is painting before and after Picasso.” Originally over nine hours long and shown across three days, what has survived of the film comes from a variety of sources. Live translation of French intertitles.

JonBenet’s Tricycle | Thursday, December 13, 7 p.m. (87 min.) Local Filmmakers’ Showcase Directed by Andrew Novick (1987). Andrew Novick—a Mile-High legend as the man who collects almost everything—forges all sorts of emotional connections to the objects he acquires: memories, curiosity or interest in the darker side of humanity. He was living in Boulder 22 years ago when JonBenét Ramsey’s tricycle fell into his hands after her murder. Recently compelled to tackle the unsolved mystery in his own way, Novick took the tricycle on a journey into the realm of psychic phenomena—or did it take him? This quirky autobiographical documentary is also an investigation of the human urge to possess what we value and the impact that pop culture and the media have on our experience of tragedy.

A Beautiful Mind | Thursday, December 28, 7 p.m. (135 min.) Coordinated with Art of Data exhibit Directed by Ron Howards, featuring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, (2001). In this biographical drama based on the life of the brilliant mathematician and economist John Nash, paranoid schizophrenia leads to extended delusional episodes mulling over huge amounts of data and its organizational connections. Based on the book by Sylvia Nasar.

Brakhage | Thursday, January 10, 7 p.m. (75 min.) Local Filmmakers’ Showcase Directed by Jim Shedden (Canada—1998). Shot in Boulder in 1997, this biographical documentary explores the genius of filmmaker Stan Brakhage, living here at the time with second wife Marilyn Jull and their two sons, Anton and Vaughn. Excerpts of Brakhage’s cinema and those of other experimental filmmakers, including George Kuchar, Jonas Mekas, Bruce Elder and others are featured. Music by James Tenney. 4
