I read an article in Rolling Stone magazine last summer about the Los Coyotes Mariachi Band at the Uvalde TX High School. The Director, Albert Martinez, was doing incredible work with the students to help them celebrate their culture and cultivate pride through mariachi music after the horrors of the shooting of nineteen elementary school children and two teachers in 2022. There were gorgeous pictures of the kids in their outfits, looking sad, but proud. I was moved to tears and decided to try to find this extraordinary man. To my surprise, Albert responded to my email, and we made plans for the kids to come out for our spring concert, "La Fiesta de las Luces." With the dedication of many volunteers here at the Boulder Chorale (especially Kathy Czerny, Jill Fender, Greg Herring, Beverly Gourley, and Kris Stenzel), and with the support of the Board of Directors and Nathan Wubbena, Artistic Director of the Boulder Children’s Chorale, this week of education outreach and cultural celebration is happening! I also want to thank Liz McGuire and Kathy Kucsan, from the Colorado Music Festival and the Colorado Musical Arts, for their initial "Yes!" to us, which enabled us to move past a crucial fundraising point. And to Susan Brehm, Karon Kelly, and our anonymous donors, as well as all of the donors who were led by their heart to help bring these amazing children here. And most importantly, thank you to Albert Martinez, my new and dear friend, for believing this could happen and for making the world a more compassionate place through music. And thanks to YOU, our audience, for supporting the Boulder Chorale in ongoing efforts to expand into, and collaborate with, our diverse front-range communities.

Leí un artículo en la revista Rolling Stone el verano pasado sobre Los Coyotes Mariachi Band de Uvalde TX High School. In the summer of 2023 Dr. Vicki Burrichter reached out to me via email regarding the story in the Rolling Stone magazine. After a series of phone calls and emails we are thrilled to present to you an evening filled with talent, creativity, and dedication. Our students have worked tirelessly to prepare for this event, and we are excited to showcase their hard work. Throughout the evening you will witness a variety of performances and presentations that highlight the diverse talents of our school community which promise to captivate and inspire. We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all the students, teachers, staff, volunteers, and The Boulder Chorale who have contributed to making this event possible. Your commitment and passion for education and music shine brightly tonight.

About the Music Sobre la Música

The Mexican Renaissance and Baroque classical music have not been as well-known as music from the same periods in Europe. But this is starting to be rectified. There is an extraordinary amount of gorgeous music from these two periods. With the mixing of the Spanish and Mexican indigenous cultures, a unique yet familiar music emerges.

Established in 1999 by the Uvalde Consolidated School District, Mariachi Los Coyotes of Uvalde High School has become a beacon of musical excellence and cultural celebration in the community. With a mission to educate, learn, and share the rich history of Mexican music, the ensemble has brought a new musical experience to audiences while proudly representing the vibrant Mexican culture. Throughout its twenty-five-year history Mariachi Los Coyotes has witnessed over 1,000 talented musicians graduate from its program, showcasing their skills in performances across the Tree City, the Hill Country, and the San Antonio area.

Through its music, Mariachi Los Coyotes continues to expand its reach, spreading joy and fostering a positive atmosphere in Uvalde, Texas, through their captivating performances and unwavering dedication to its craft.

The Boulder Chorale

For nearly 60 years, the Boulder Chorale has been a source of musical inspiration, education, and collaboration within the Boulder community. Our mission is to enrich and inspire a broad community through music, lifting lives through song!

The Boulder Concert Chorale is a largest auditioned chorus of volunteer singers in Boulder County. The choir performs varied repertoire ranging from Renaissance polyphony, Baroque chamber music, and Classical masterworks to pieces in traditional styles such as African, Brazilian, Hindustani, and Bluegrass as well as works by contemporary composers. The Boulder Concert Chorale performs with the area orchestras and other performing arts groups and presents its own concerts often featuring new arrangements with local musicians.

The Boulder Chamber Chorale is a select small ensemble comprising some of the finest singers from the Chorale. The group appears on Boulder Concert Chorale concerts, performs separately, presents outreach performances, and collaborates with area orchestras and other performing arts groups.

The Boulder Children’s Chorale’s inaugural season was in 2009. Boulder Children’s Chorale has 4 ensembles: Piccolini (K-1st), Prima Voce (2nd-5th), Volante (4th-7th, auditioned) and Bel Canto (6th-9th, auditioned), and holds rehearsals in both Boulder and Longmont. Bel Canto, directed by Artistic Director Nathan Wubbena, is the Boulder Children’s Chorale’s premier auditioned ensemble. Bel Canto is composed of singers from 6th - 9th grades. Singers perform in two-, three-and four-part harmony while working to develop strong musicianship and music theory skills.

The Children’s Chorale has collaborated with professional musicians and ensembles including Bravo! Vail, CU Opera, Boulder Philharmonic, MahlerFest Colorado, and Colorado Music Festival. With a heavy emphasis on music edu individual talents, the Boulder Children’s Chorale choirs help singers of all ages and abilities thrive!

Dr. Vicki Burrichter has been called "one of the most innovative choral programmers in the country." Highlights include Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts (which the chorus took to the Netherlands in the summer of 2019 with three Grammy-nominated musicians); Carnival Brazil with the Boulder Samba School and Ginga; the tangos of Argentina with the Austin Piazzolla Quintet; Between Heaven and Earth – Hindustani classical music with JamKeyJam; Origins: The Fertile Crescent - a concert of Arabic music with Palestinian singer Catrene Malshey; Cherubini’s Requiem with the Boulder Chamber Orchestra; Brahms’ Shicksalslied with the Boulder Philharmonic; and - conducting the orchestra as well - Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with the Boulder Symphony Orchestra.

Previous work includes Voices of Light, set to the 1927 Carl Dreyer film; The Passion of Joan of Arc; Sing for the Cure with the Colorado Symphony and 200 singers; Mary Lou Williams’ Mary Lou’s Mass at the DCPA with the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble; founding the SOAR! Youth and Adult Choir, which mentored foster/adopted children in choral music and life skills; and a Gold Medal at the New York Choral Festival with her chamber choir of ten years, Canto Spiritus. She has been asked to conduct Jennifer Higdon’s piece for solo violin, orchestra, and chorus, The Singing Rooms, at Carnegie Hall in June of 2025. (Any experienced choral singer may join! Her mentors and teachers include conductors Marin Alsop, Vance George, Pierre Boulez, and Robert Shaw.

Albert Martínez was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. At the age of four his family relocated to El Paso, Texas, where he attended public schools, enjoyed sports and developed a love for music. After graduating from high school, Mr. Martinez attained both, his Bachelors and Master degrees in music education from the University of Texas at El Paso. After completing his degree, he became a band director and conducted marching bands, concert bands, jazz bands, and mariachi ensembles. Mr. Martinez has been fortunate to have received numerous 1st divisions at the UIL Marching Band Competition, UIL Concert/Sight Reading Contest, jazz festivals, and mariachi contests. His marching band and mariachi ensembles have also advanced and performed at their respective state contest. As member of the Texas Music Educators Association, he strives to inspire students by “Enriching lives through music...one student at a time.” As a trumpet player and singer, he has performed with the Eklectic Jazz Ensemble, the El Paso Wind Symphony as well as Mariachi Los Arrieros of El Paso, Texas and Mariachi Cobre, the premier Mariachi in Disney’s Epcot Theme Park. He has been fortunate enough to accompany artists the likes of Bobby Shew, Dave Pietro, Linda Ronstadt, Little Joe Y La Familia, and many others. Now in his 22nd year as a Texas Music Educator, he has made the move to San Antonio, Texas and is in his third year as the mariachi director at Uvalde High School and Morales Junior High in Uvalde, Texas.

Nathan Wubbena received his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 2011, and his Master of Music in Music Education with a Conducting Specialization at Colorado State University in 2018. He has extensive experience conducting ensembles and students of all levels; he is also the Artistic Director of the Longmont Chorale, as well as Board President and Founder of Ascent Vocals. In 2015, Nathan received the Outstanding Young Music Educator Award from the Colorado Music Educators Association. He is Chair Emeritus of the Colorado Middle All State Choir board, of which he was a founding board member. Mr. Wubbena has served as a guest clinician and conductor throughout the state of Colorado, directing Honor Choirs in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, the Western Slope, and Northeastern Colorado, as well as the Directors Choirs for Western State Colorado University and Middle School All State. He also adjudicates at ACDA festivals and Music in the Parks. It is Nathan’s firm belief that music is for everyone; he works tirelessly to make that a reality for young and old alike, and then to create an environment where music and collaboration can bring beauty and joy to all.
