Noonga Hall celebrates 90 years With balloons festooning the hall, the band primed and dancing shoes at-the-ready, the scene was set for the grand old Noonga Hall to celebrate its 90th Birthday. Over 90 people came from all around the district on February 2, 2019 to celebrate this special anniversary. A delicious birthday cake, novelty dances, raffles, music by Sound Elite and a copious homemade supper were all highlights of the evening (read the full story on Page 9).

Not to be outdone, All Saints Anglican Parish, which takes in Mungallala, Amby, Dunkeld and Injune will celebrate its 130th Birthday on October 20, 2019. The Parish history is currently being compiled by Mrs Christine McLean and all contributions - anecdotes, photos or stories are welcomed. You can also sponsor a page for yourself or in someone’s memory for $5, contact Mrs McLean abbieglassie@activ8.net.au for more information.

Injune is also preparing to celebrate the Centenary of the Railway arriving next year (2020), the School in 2021 and the town of Injune being gazetted in 2022. Contact CHIPS Janice Humphreys on 0428 263 584 if you have stories of Injune’s history to share (more on page 7).

Roma Australia Day celebrations kicked off at 9am at the Cultural Centre. The award ceremony was followed by the cutting of the Australia Day cake and morning tea. New Nurses for SWHHS

Eleven excited nursing graduates made their way to Roma Hospital for a week of orientation on February 11. The South West Hospital and Health Service’s (SWHHS) new graduates won’t be staying in Roma long though.

New Year, new students & teachers for Mitchell!

Deputy Mayor Jan Chambers conducted this year’s ceremony, with Aunty Lynette Nixon opening proceedings with the Welcome to Country.

“I would like to congratulate everyone who was nominated for an Australia Day Award,” said Cr Chambers.

“Our community is blessed with a large number of hard working people who are committed to the goals and ideals of our country.

“These awards focus attention on Australian characteristics and values we respect; a fair go, a respect for diversity, a genuine concern for our people and a love of sport,” said Cr Chambers.

Mitchell State School kicked of 2019 with eleven new prep students and a newly appointed Principal, Cass Ahearn.

“I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich tradition of community!” said Principal Ahearn.

“I have worked with a variety of schools around the south west, most recently working as Principal at Morven State School in a teaching principal role.

“I am excited and eager to bring my skills as an educational leader to Mitchell State School and work with families and the community to ensure the success of our school and community,” said the Principal.

St Patrick’s School is very excited to welcome Miss Rebecca Smith (Year 4-6 teacher) and new prep student Lexi Whittaker to the school community.

“Its lovely to see the excitement and 1. enthusiasm all our students have for school and I’m sure there were a lot of parents happy to see school start back,” said Principal Zoe. “A positive attitude to schooling really has a huge impact on student achievement and its an important responsibility of teachers and parents to cultivate this positive attitude.”

Mitchell on Maranoa Gallery Have you seen Jane Cornish's fascinating photography on display at the Mitchell on Maranoa Gallery? The exhibition titled ‘Places and Faces’ features photos from her travels featuring places like Fez in Morocco, Lesvos in Greece and of course Mitchell, Australia.

‘Places and Faces’ is on show until April 6.

MOMG will also be running an exciting fundraising exhibition from July 20 - August 31 asking people to create art on a supplied canvas around the theme ‘My Maranoa’.

Merle Murphy Citizen of the Year 2019 At the Australia Day celebrations at the Wallumbilla Memorial Hall, Merle Murphy was presented with the Citizen of the Year Award for 2019. Merle has been part of the Yuleba community for more than 80 years and loves to be involved with the Yuleba State School, Cuppa for Cancer’s Biggest Morning Tea as well as creating over 1100 knitted teddy bears for the Queensland Children’s Hospital and the Wallumbilla Hospital.

Australia Day Awards for Wallumbilla/Yuleba and Surrounds were as follows: Young Citizen of the Year –Thomas York Cultural Award – Festival of Small Halls Achievement Award – Kristie York Sports Award – Katrina Cleland Junior Sports Award – Payton Leahy Community Event of the Year – Wallumbilla 100 Year Show Member Contribution Award – Wallumbilla SES and Rural Fire Brigade.

Congratulations to all nominees and award recipients. A delicious morning tea was served after the ceremony and in the afternoon, the Wallumbilla Pool was the venue for lunch and an enjoyable swim in the warm weather.

Bendemere Garden Club The Bendemere Garden Club met for their AGM and a general meeting at Robyn and Jim Wilby’s garden in Dargal Road. There was a good roll up with 49 members in attendance. The guest speaker for the afternoon was Craig Thorne.

Craig gave an informative talk including the history of the Bougainvillea, soil types they prefer, flowering times and fertiliser requirements. Craig then gave a demonstration of how to take and strike cuttings. Craig’s talk was listened to enthusiastically and many questions were asked. Anne Moloney thanked Craig for his informative talk.

The raffles for the day were drawn and they were won by Viv Bruton, Christine Webster and Robyn McKenzie. President Lynne thanked Robyn and Jim Wilby for having us to their garden. Robyn spoke briefly about the beautiful sunflowers in the garden which are currently bringing parrots, including Crimson Wings and Rosellas. Robyn advised they are usually on town water but have recently pumped from the dam to the garden for a couple of waterings and this has greened the lawn up immensely.

Jackson Games Afternoon A delicious afternoon tea was served, as usual. Robyn invited everyone to feel free to enjoy the garden and wander everywhere.

The next garden Club meeting will be on Sunday, 3 March. Venue to be advised.

The Jackson Branch of the QCWA organized a games afternoon in January. It was held at the CWA hall in Jackson. More than 25 people from Roma, Noonga, Dulacca and Jackson were in attendance. All enjoyed games of table tennis, darts, chess, blokus and word games. The attendee then stayed on for drinks and nibbles. A great afternoon and evening was had by all.

The ladies of the CWA who organised the day have indicated that they will be having other events for the Jackson community so keep an eye out for date claimers!

Myrtle was heavily involved in the recommencement of the Wallumbilla Pony Club and gained great satisfaction in educating and helping young riders. She was also involved in the Wallumbilla and Raslie Tennis Clubs. Myrtle worked at the Wallumbilla grocery shop for many years while rearing her daughters on her own.

The party was a nice opportunity for close friends and family to come together and reminisce with Archie and Myrtle about their lives in Wallumbilla. The time has now come for them to receive more permanent care, so on 21st January, both Archie and Myrtle .A big joyful crowd came together at Noonga to wish the Noonga began living as long-stay residents at the Hall a happy 90th birthday.

Surat area New aircon for Surat’s lady bowlers Surat Ladies Bowling Club would like to acknowledge and thank Maranoa Regional Council for the grant they received of $2302 towards Air conditioning in the dining room.

This is a great benefit to all who use the facility. With the recent heat waves it has made this area great to be in. Thank you to Councillor Newman for officiating the turning on of our new Air Conditioner.

The Pink Stumps Day held in Surat on Australia Day was a huge success! The fundraiser raised $3219.16 for the McGrath Foundation which supports Breast Cancer Nurses. The day was played in good spirt with five teams competing for the winners title! Cecil’s Hawaiians won the final that was played out between them and the Young Bulls.

Event Organiser Ben Hancock said “It was a very successful day, it was great to see everyone dressed up in pink and in good spirits for such a worthy cause!”

“Thanks to everyone who helped make the day such a great success,” said Ben.

Glenmorgan Gliz & Glam Gala The Glenmorgan State School P&C are gearing up to take on the elements again this year to host the 2019 Glitz & Glam Gala.

The 2018 Gala was an outstanding success with over 370 people flocking to the small town and although they received 90mm of rain after 7pm, it didn’t dampen their spirits.

Many partied long into the night and enjoyed a much-needed boost heading into winter.

The 2018 Gala saw a staggering $18,000 raised for the P&C they donated $3000 of this to LifeFlight in Toowoomba to ensure they can keep supporting the community.

The 2019 Glitz and Glam Gala is on Saturday March 16, 2019 and will include live music by West & Public, canapés, dinner and a variety of raffles and auction opportunities. The Gala will provide the small community with a chance to shake off the drought and to celebrate the fantastic future Glenmorgan State School offers children.

This year proceeds will go towards building a roof over the schools multi sports court. A portion of the funds will go to the McGrath Foundation who raise money to fund Breast Care Nurses in communities’ across Australia.

The event is a true testament to the town and surrounding community members’ drive and determination to provide the small

school and its nine students with the very best education.
