Конкурс Молодих Українських Художників та Художниць 2021

МУХі — це поліфункціональний проєкт, спрямований на послідовну й тривалу підтримку українських художниць і художників на етапі їхнього становлення. Нaзвa МУХі є абревіатурою від «молоді українські художники / художниці і...». Першу виставку МУХі презентували 2009 року в Боттега Галереї. У 2021-му проєкт реaлізували увосьме. В основі проєкту — конкурс, що проводиться зa тaкими прaвилaми: участь беруть молоді українські художники віком від 21 року; учасником може бути тільки громaдянин aбо громaдянкa Укрaїни; фіналістів і фіналісток та переможців і переможниць конкурсу обирaє комісія експертів (з 2015 року — міжнaроднa), до складу якої входять курaтори і кураторки, директори і директорки музеїв, aртцентрів та галерей, мистецтвознaвці й мистецтвознавиці тa художники й художниці; художник чи художниця може потрапити до склaду фінaлістів і фіналісток МУХі лише рaз. Загальний призовий фонд конкурсу МУХі 2021 — 70 000 грн. Переможець отримує грошову премію — 40 000 грн та можливість реалізувати власний проєкт у галерейному просторі (або під егідою) Щербенко Арт Центру 2022 року. Також міжнародна експертна комісія обере двох призерів, які отримають грошові премії в розмірі 15 000 грн та інституційну підтримку в реалізації власного виставкового проєкту. Цьогорічна виставка МУХі 2021 охоплює широкий спектр тем, серед яких антропоцентризм та екологія, персональна і колективна пам’ять, ідентичність, війна і конфлікт, пандемійна реальність, технології та глобалізація тощо. Попри те що мистецькі висловлювання нерозривно пов’язані з осмисленням сучасної політико-соціальної ситуації в країні та світі й подекуди є репрезентативними для локального контексту, у них є місце для глобальних питань або особистих хвилювань художниць і художників, що робить їх не менш важливими. Переважна частина робіт на виставці є сайт-специфічними або адаптованими під проєкт МУХі та простір Центру сучасного мистецтва М17. Крім того, більшість висловлювань — роботи нових медіа: медіаінсталяції, відеороботи, короткометражні фільми, 3D-модельовані скульптури чи фотографічні перформанси тощо. У достатньо великому приміщенні М17 порівняно невелика кількість робіт тісно заполонила простір й утворила своєрідний діалог з його сучасною неоднорідною архітектурою. Виставку доповнить паралельна освітня програма — триденний форум з фокус-темою «Cередовище». Форум постане середовищем обміну знаннями, ідеями та досвідом, а також простором дискусії про молоде сучасне українське мистецтво. Програма складатиметься з панельних обговорень на теми нових мистецьких тенденцій, кураторства, освіти, поколінь, фемінізму тощо. Крім реалізації виставки, цього року Щербенко Арт Центр презентує книгу «МУХі 2009–2021», яка висвітлює 12-річну історію конкурсу й водночас фіксує зміни й тенденції в молодому мистецтві відповідного проміжку часу за допомогою опіній попередніх експертів та експерток конкурсу, а також незалежних кураторок. Презентація книги стане окремою подією форуму й буде доповнена доповідями незалежних авторів та авторок книги.

MUHi is a multifunctional project focused on consistent and sustained support for Ukrainian artists at the initial stages of their creative formation. The name MUHi is an abbreviation for Young Ukrainian Artists (ukr: Molodi Ukrayinski Hudozhnyky ta Hudozhnytsi i). The first MUHi exhibition was presented in 2009 at Bottega Gallery in Kyiv. The presentation in 2021 will be the project’s eighth edition.

The core of the project is a competition that is open to artists according to the following rules: participants must be age 21 or older; they must be citizens of Ukraine; finalists and winners of the competition are selected by commission of experts made up of international (since 2015) curators, directors of museums, art centers, galleries, art critics; an artist can only be a MUHi finalist once.

The total prize fund of the MUHi 2021 competition is UAH 70,000. The winner receives a prize of UAH 40,000 and the opportunity to implement their own project in the gallery space (or under the auspices) of the Shcherbenko Art Centre in 2022. The international expert commission will also select two additional winners who will receive prizes in the amount of UAH 15,000 and institutional support in the implementation of their own exhibition project.

MUHi 2021 exhibition covers a wide range of topics, including anthropocentrism and ecology, personal and collective memory, identity, war and conflict, pandemic realities, technology and globalization, etc. Despite the fact that artistic expressions are inextricably linked with understandings of our modern political and social situation in the country and the world, as well as being, at times, representative of local contexts, they also have a place for global issues or personal experiences of artists, which makes them no less important.

Most of the works presented at the exhibition are site-specific or adapted to the MUHi project’s installment at the space of the M17 Contemporary Art Center. It is notable that most of the projects are works of new media, including media installations, video works, short films, 3D-modeled sculptures or photographic performances, etc.

Although M17 is a rather large venue, the relatively small number of works have comfortably filled the space and formed a kind of dialogue with its modern heterogeneous architecture.

The exhibition of finalists will be complemented by a parallel educational program — a three-day forum on the theme: surroundings. The forum will become an environment for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experience, as well as a place for discussion about young contemporary Ukrainian art. The program will consist of panel discussions on new artistic trends, curatorship, education, generations, feminism, etc.

In addition to the implementation of the exhibition, this year Shcherbenko Art Centre will also present the book MUHi 2009–2021, which is designed to highlight the 12-year history of the competition, and at the same time present a record of changes and trends in young art during the corresponding period with the inclusion of opinion pieces written by previous competition experts as well as independent curators. The presentation of the book will become a separate event of the forum and will be supplemented by presentations by the independent authors included in the book.

Сучасне мистецтво стає дедалі цікавішим і потрібнішим українському суспільству. Наші виставки й проєкти відвідують люди з різних сфер бізнесу, з різними вподобаннями, різних статі й віку. Але всіх турбують соціальні та політичні теми, з якими ми працюємо. Вони так само, як і ми, шукають відповіді на критичні й часто незручні питання, які ми завжди порушуємо в наших проєктах. Для нас ця тенденція — яскравий маркер. Ми розуміємо, що рухаємося в правильному напрямку. Ми ефективні та результативні. Тема «Середовище», на якій ми зосередили увагу учасників і учасниць (експертів і експерток) форуму в межах проєкту МУХi 2021, відповідає сьогоднішнім запитам соціуму. Вплив соціальних змін на сучасне мистецтво не можна заперечувати. Україна за 30 років незалежності багато чого подолала, хоча ми стабільно живемо й працюємо в умовах нестабільності. У дискусіях форуму ми фокусуємося на загальному / єдиному — на тому, що всіх нас об’єднує. У всеукраїнському проєкті МУХi рік у рік формується зв’язок різних міст і регіонів України за допомогою тем та ідей, які актуальні в усьому світі та отримують рефлексії в сучасному мистецтві, але пов’язані зі специфікою міст, де формувалися наші учасники та учасниці. На форумі створюється сприятлива атмосфера для професіоналів і професіоналок у світі мистецтва, дослідників і дослідниць та насамперед митців і мисткинь молодого мистецтва всієї країни. Contemporary art is becoming more and more interesting and necessary for Ukrainian society. Our exhibitions and projects are visited by people from different fields of business, different hobbies, genders, ages. However, they are all concerned about the social and political issues we are working on. They, like us, are looking for answers to the critical and often awkward questions that our projects consistently raise. For us, this trend is a good marker of quality. We understand that we are moving in the right direction. We are efficient and effective.

The topic "Environment", on which we have focused the attention of the parallel forum participants within the project MUHi 2021, meets today's societal demands. The impact of social change on contemporary art cannot be denied: our young country has managed to overcome a lot in 30 years of independence, although we still live stably but work in conditions of instability. We focus on the common / the overarching element in the forum discussions — that which unites us all. As a Ukrainian project, MUHi forms a connection, year after year, to the many cities and regions of Ukraine, with the help of themes and ideas that are relevant all over the world and produce reflections in contemporary art, while also relating to the specifics of the cities where our participants grew up. The forum creates a favorable atmosphere for professionals in the art world, researchers, and, above all, young artists across the country.

In 2021, the MUHi project received a grant from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation for the second time. Some areas of the project were supported by our business partners, collectors, and patrons. This creates a favorable situation for the development of the competition. And even though the preparation and implementation of MUHi 2021 coincided with what is now nearly two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not only able to hold a competition but also to publish a book dedicated to it: MUHi 2009–2021. While working on it, we first collected an archive of the project's twelve years of work; secondly, these materials are accompanied by historical references from each of the eight competitions held. Lastly, we asked the experts involved to share their views on the dynamics of the development of young Ukrainian art since 2009 and the role that our project has played in this process. This request was met with a comprehensive slice of professional visions. As a result of this work, I had the opportunity to reconsider the many phenomena and changes in the environment and more clearly define our position in the institutional field of contemporary art. That gave me the strength and inspiration to work further and to continue to develop our objective — to support young Ukrainian contemporary artists.

I would like to thank all those who worked with us on the preparation of the book and the MUHi project, as well as my relatives, friends, and partners who support me and MUHi year after year. This connection creates a kind of dialogue, which, thanks to the development of contemporary Ukrainian art, constitutes the cultural environment of our society.

Nastia Didenko was born in 1994 in Kyiv.

In 2017 she graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, Faculty of Painting. Since 2016 she has been a participant and co-founder of artist-run space Hlebzawod. In 2016 she started working as a food and fine art photographer, which influenced her subsequent creative activity.

In her artistic practice, she works with the conflicts that arise when attempting to earn money and the reflections on self-deception in individual activities and on rethinking postSoviet injuries. She works with media such as painting, installation, photography, and video.

She lives and works in Kyiv.

Імовірно, кожному від бабусі дісталось, окрім салатниць у формі рибки, ще й безліч прикмет, доведених до несвідомого автоматизму. На кшталт «не дивись у розбите дзеркало», «не зберігай биті речі, бо доля буде бита», «глянь у дзеркало, коли повертаєшся додому по забуту річ» тощо. Такі висловлювання мають звичний і непомітний характер. Такі ірраціоналізми покликані вберегти від лиха і є спробою опанувати непідконтрольні, незалежні від людських дій процеси, проте набувають характеру причепливих станів та неврозів. Чи не є ці прикмети вкоріненим колективним обсесивно-компульсивним розладом? Рівень емоційної напруженості, що виникає як результат спроб контролювати ситуацію, працює в обернено пропорційному напрямку: що більшою кількістю упереджень послуговується людина, то більшою стає потреба їх використовувати. Об’єкти проєкту ілюструють певні прикмети та обставини, яким вони покликані запобігати, оскільки є саме розбитими речами, які зберігати не варто. У цей спосіб художниця намагається, хоча й не без остраху, позбутися нав’язаного та не досить здорового методу поводження з навколишньою дійсністю та особистим переживанням.

Bad Omen

Probably everyone has received from their grandmother not only a salad plate in the shape of fish but also a slew of other signs and omens that are worked out to the unconscious automatism. Something like, “Don’t look in the broken mirror”; “Don’t keep broken things, because fate will be shattered”; “Look in the mirror when you come home because you forgot something” and so on. Such statements are familiar and inconspicuous in character. Such irrationalisms, which take the form of attachment states and neuroses, are intended to protect against disaster and are an attempt to master the uncontrollable, independent of human action processes. What are these signs, that are like a not-ingrained collective obsessive-compulsive disorder?

The level of emotional tension that arises as a result of attempts to control the situation, works in the opposite direction: the more prejudices a person uses, the greater the need to use them.

The project’s objects represent certain signs and circumstances which they should prevent, as they are those shattered items that must not be stored.

In this way, the artist attempts, albeit not without fear, to break free from the imposed and unhealthy way of dealing with the surrounding reality and personal experience.

Настя Діденко | Nastia Didenko

Настя Діденко народилася 1994 року в Києві. У 2017-му закінчила Національну академію образотворчого мистецтва та архітектури, факультет живопису. З 2016-го — учасниця та співзасновниця artist-run space «Хлєбзавод». 2016 року почала займатися food та fine art фотографією, що вплинуло на її подальшу художню діяльність. У своїй художній практиці порушує питання прекарності, становище художників та художниць і переосмислення пострадянських травм. Розвивається в таких медіумах, як живопис, інсталяція, фотографія та відео. Живе і працює в Києві.

Yuliia Zakharova was born in 1979 in Kyiv.

She graduated from Volodymyr Hetman National Economic University in Kyiv.

In 2013–2018 she studied art history, painting and academic drawing in the studio of Victoria Lapteva. In 2014–2015 studied at the School of Contemporary Art in the fine arts art program.

In 2018–2019 studied at Kyiv Academy of Media Arts in the program for artists.

Yuliia is a member and co-founder of the art group Light, which in 2017 became a finalist in the N. Altman All-Ukrainian Competition of Young Artists. She has participated in the Biruchiy Art School residency (Poland), and numerous festivals (International Land Art Symposium Mogritsa, Land Art Festival Wind, Land Art Festival Mythogenesis).

She works with media such as painting, installation, found objects, photos and videos.

In her work, she explores issues of the environment and individual and collective memory, as well as identity and feminist discourse. She lives and works in Kyiv.

Крокодил Відео, 24’14’’, 2021

Бортницька станція аерації (БСА) — один з найбільших комплексів очисних споруд у Східній Європі та єдина станція очищення стічних вод у Києві. Побудована ще в 1960-х роках. Нині рівень зношеності обладнання та будівель становить близько 80%. Щодоби станція очищає від 700 тис. до 900 тис. м³ стічних вод, а її мулові поля займають загальну площу понад 272 га. За майже 60 років експлуатації станції на відстійниках і мулових полях накопичилася така кількість мулу, яка вдвічі перевищує технічні можливості станції, і буквально кожну секунду його кількість зростає. Сьогодні Київ упритул підійшов до станції, і вікна деяких новобудов безпосередньо виходять на очисні споруди. Разом зі своїм найближчим сусідом — сміттєспалювальним заводом «Енергія» станція аерації є однією з найпроблемніших екологічних точок Києва. У зоні її випарів сьогодні проживає близько 300 тис. осіб — приблизно 12% усього населення Києва. Уряд Японії погодив надати кредит на реконструкцію БСА ще 2015 року, але реальну роботу з реконструкції досі не розпочали. Проєкт досліджує проблеми екології міста Києва та Бортницької станції аерації, використовуючи як основу легенду про те, що в цій місцевості нещодавно з’явився крокодил. Дослідження провели серед справжніх місцевих рибалок, які регулярно відвідують стічний канал БСА. Рибалок запитували про те, що вони знають про це місце і де можна знайти крокодила. Говорячи про крокодила, ми уявляємо собі образ якогось екзотичного, цілком конкретного хижака. Якою буде реакція людини, що почула таку інформацію? Яким буде її крокодил? Чи треба нам боятися крокодила? А може, цей крокодил уже давно тут?..

Crocodile Video 24’14’’, 2021

Bortnytsia Aeration Station (BAS) is one of the largest water treatment complexes in Eastern Europe and the only wastewater treatment plant in Kyiv. It was built in the 1960s.

Currently, approximately 80% of the equipment and buildings are in disrepair. Every day the station cleans from 700,000 to 900,000 cubic meters of wastewater, and its silt fields occupy a total area of over 272 hectares.

For the nearly 60 years of operation on sedimentation tanks and silt fields, the amount of accumulated sludge has been twice the station’s technical capabilities, and it is growing by the second. Today, the construction expansion of the city of Kyiv has very close to the station. Some windows of newly built houses directly overlook the treatment facilities. In combination with its nearest neighbour, the incinerator Enerhia (Energy), BAS is one of Kyiv’s most problematic environmental issues. Today, about 300,000 people — or approximately 12% of the total population of Kyiv — live in the plant’s evaporation zone.

The Japanese government agreed to provide a loan for the reconstruction of the BAS in 2015, but real reconstruction work has not begun yet.

The project investigates the ecological problems of Kyiv and BAS, using the legend of a crocodile that has recently appeared in this area as a starting point. The research was carried out on real local fishermen who visit the Bortnytsia Aeration Station’s sewer on a regular basis. Fishermen were asked if they knew anything about the area and where the crocodile could be found.

Speaking of crocodile, we visualise the image of some exotic, very specific predator. What will be the reaction of a person who has just heard such information? What will her crocodile look like? Should we be afraid of the crocodile? Or maybe this crocodile has been here for a long time?

Юлія Захарова | Yuliia Zakharova

Юлія Захарова народилася 1979 року в Києві. Закінчила Київський національний економічний університет імені Вадима Гетьмана. У 2013–2018 роках вивчала історію мистецтва, живопис та академічний малюнок у студії Вікторії Лаптєвої. У 2014–2015 роках навчалася в Школі сучасного мистецтва за напрямом «художник». У 2018–2019 роках навчалася в Kyiv Academy of Media Arts за напрямом «художник». Юлія є учасницею та співзасновницею артгрупи Light, y складі якої 2017 року стала фіналісткою Всеукраїнського конкурсу молодих художників імені Натана Альтмана. Брала участь у резиденції Biruchiy Art School (Польща), Міжнародному лендарт симпозіумі «Простір покордоння» (Могриця), фестивалях ленд-арту «Вітер» та «Міфогенез». Розвивається в таких медіумах, як живопис, інсталяція, об’єкти, фото та відео. У своїх роботах досліджує питання навколишнього середовища, індивідуальної та колективної пам’яті, а також ідентичності й феміністичного дискурсу. Живе і працює в Києві.

Alexandra Kadzevich was born in 1992 in Odesa. She graduated from Mitrofan Grekov Odesa Art School in Odesa, in the Department of Painting and she has also completed the course Contemporary Art at Kyiv Academy of Media Arts. In 2021 she studied at the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts. In June 2018, she founded the artist-run space Noch in her own studio.

The was a participant in the fourth SWAP: UK/Ukraine 2019 program of art residencies and a nominee for the PinchukArtCentre 2020 Award. She works at the intersection of object and painting, in which she integrates the language of collage, drawing and installation.

Інсталяція, папір, картон, акварель, кольорові олівці, розміри змінні, 2019–2021 У просторі Noch є маленька кімната, у якій останнім часом Олександра Кадзевич показувала відеороботи художників, короткі фільми. У цій кімнаті величезний лист сірого паперу закривав вікно від сонця. Через кілька місяців показів художниця зняла цей лист. Від прямих променів сонця він набрав вигорілого, світлого відтінку, який заповнив основне полотно паперу, залишивши незмінними тільки кілька початкових фрагментів по краях. У цій роботі художниця звертається до світла, здатного пронизати матерію або будівлю, щоб викликати враження нестійкості, слабкості її опору. Вона представляє серію робіт з паперу — лабіринтоподібні, монтажні, зіткані з розривів будови об’єкти. У багатьох із них використовує допоміжні елементи — прозорі оболонки, які надають їм рис ефемерних конструкцій, що грають зі світлом та кольором. Інші листи паперу розміщені вздовж підлоги й утворюють плоскі шари фарби, текстури, речовини. Роботи та об’єкти художниці часто містять елемент слабкості, нестійкості, щось, що порушує їхню рівновагу або навіть загрожує їхній присутності. Вона не розглядає їх як образотворчі чи метафоричні, її цікавить насамперед матеріальний, фізичний досвід. «Намагаюся досягти того, щоб чуттєві особливості цих об’єктів викликали відгук з боку глядачів. Перенесли його з режиму буденності в особливий режим уваги до спостережуваного, де час сповільнюється, а новий маршрут прокладено через ритмічний малюнок затримок, пауз; змінили фокус з об’єктів на безліч ритмів, темпоральних спотворень; включили в потік нескінченної відсутності часу, наповненої виключно процесом сприйняття простору», — ділиться Олександра Кадзевич. Художниця досліджує відношення між матеріалом та значенням, можливості декорацій впливати на досвід глядачів.

Plein Air is Unavailable

Installation, paper, cardboard, watercolour, coloured pencils, size varies, 2019–2021 There is a small room in the Noch space, where Alexandra Kadzevich has recently been shown artist’s video works and short films. A large sheet of gray paper covered the window in this room, keeping the sun out. A few months later, the artist removed this paper. The paper had acquired a burnt, faded shade from the sun’s direct rays, which filled the main picture plane of the paper, leaving only a few initial fragments at the edges unchanged.

In this work, the artist employs light that can penetrate matter or a structure to create the illusion of instability, or the weakness of its resistance. It is a series of paper works that are labyrinthine, assembled, and woven from ruptures in the structure of objects. Auxiliary elements are used in many of them, such as transparent shells, which give them the appearance of ephemeral structures that play with light and colour. Other sheets of paper, arranged along the floor, create flat layers of paint, texture, and substance.

The artist’s works and objects frequently contain an element of fragility or instability, something that upsets their balance or even threatens their presence. She does not regard them as pictorial or metaphorical; rather, she is interested in material, physical experience. “I try to make sure that the sensory qualities of these objects elicit a response from the audience, transferring it from the mode of everyday life to the special mode of attention of the observed, where time slows down, and a new route is laid through a rhythmic pattern of delays, pauses; shifting the focus from objects to many rhythms, temporal distortions; included in the flow of infinite lack of time, filled exclusively with the process of space perception,” says Alexandra Kadzevich. The artist investigates the relationship between material and meaning, as well as the ability of scenery to influence the audience’s experience.

Олександра Кадзевич | Alexandra Kadzevich

Олександра Кадзевич народилася 1992 року в Одесі. Закінчила Одеське художнє училище імені М. Б. Грекова (живописне відділення) та пройшла курс «Сучасне мистецтво» в Kyiv Academy of Media Arts (Київ). У 2021 році навчалась у Зальцбурзькій літній академії (Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts). У червні 2018-го заснувала у своїй майстерні artist-run space Noch. Олена Ковач | Olena Kovach

Олена Ковач народилася 1982 року в Луцьку. Закінчила Київський інститут декоративно-прикладного мистецтва і дизайну імені Михайла Бойчука, вивчала фотографію в Інституті кіно і телебачення (КНУКіМ, Київ). Художниця працює переважно з довготривалими проєктами, поєднуючи різні медіуми. Експериментує з комбінуванням фотографічного матеріалу з іншими візуальними мовами. Зокрема, в останніх проєктах досліджує міждисциплінарні можливості фотографії на перетині з театром, перформансом. Працює з темами, що стосуються історичної пам’яті (колективної та індивідуальної), процесів забуття, травматичного досвіду й засад формування ідентичності. Брала участь у фестивалях ГОГОЛЬFEST, «Візії» (Київ), Odesa Photo Days (Одеса, Київ), Krakers (Краків), Do trzech razy sztuka (Польща, півострів Гель), фестивалях фотокниги з пілотним виданням фотокниги «Дике поле». Стипендіатка програми міністерства культури Польщі Gaude Polonia 2020 року. Живе і працює у Львові та Кракові.

Olena Kovach was born in 1982 in Lutsk.

She graduated from the Mykhailo Boichuk State Institute of Decorative-Applied Arts and Design in Kyiv, and studied photography at the Institute of Film and Television (KNUCA, Kyiv).

The artist works mainly with long-term projects, combining different media.

She experiments with combinations of photographic material and other visual languages; in particular, in recent projects she explores the interdisciplinary possibilities of photography at its intersection with theater and performance. She works with topics related to historical memory (collective and individual), forgetting processes, traumatic experiences and the principles of identity formation.

She has participated in the festivals GOGOLFEST, Vizii (Kyiv), OdesaPhotodays (Odesa, Kyiv), Krakers (Krakow), Do trzech razy sztuka (Poland, Hel Peninsula), and photo book festivals with pilot edition of her photo book Wild Field. She was a Gaude Polonia scholar of the Ministry of Culture of Poland in 2020. She lives and works in Lviv and Krakow.

Коли відсутність рідного південного (кримського) узбережжя відчувалась особливо гостро, художниця шукала його в північному балтійському горизонті, де й народився цей фотографічний перформанс. Горизонт на вигляд був такий самий, але не міг замінити рідного пейзажу — на його місці була дірка. Олена Ковач запрошувала учасників своєї акції по черзі відрізати собі з рулону чорної тканини свій шматок «Чорного моря», на тлі якого їх сфотографують. Далі пропонувала їм, окрім портрета з умовним «Чорним морем», отримати власну дірку в ньому, — їхній силует, вирізаний з тканини, — щоб відчути свою відсутність на тлі Чорноморського узбережжя. Вирізаючи силует портретованого, художниця розмовляла з учасниками й розпитувала, із чим у них пов’язані втрати та як вони їх долають. Пози й настрій ініціювали самі персонажі зйомки, мисткиня майже не втручалася: її повністю розуміли. На завершення акції, згортаючи рештки дір «Чорного моря» до смітника, співрозмовники зупинили художницю закликом у жодному разі не викидати шматки, бо акція не завершена: попереду зшивання дір…

Меса за втраченим домом, або Маршрути переміщених осіб Відеодокументація фотоперформансу, 15’42’’, 2020

Акція відбувалася на пляжі Балтійського узбережжя за участю краківського театру Teatr52Hz, що виконував роль глядачів і одночасно роль кордону, який пересувався, щоразу витискаючи втікача. Утікач, біженець, переміщена особа (у режимі безперервності) прокладає собі маршрут кудись у невідоме, намагаючись збудувати нове життя десь поза домом. Робота художниці полягає у виході зі статистики та геополітичних міркувань і в спробі стати поруч із постраждалим від цих територіальних змін і переміщень. Переміщені особи. Куди? Як? Які умови супроводжують ці переміщення? Самі запитання. Людина, що втратила дім, — переміщена в невідомість.

A Portrait against the Backdrop of the Black Sea in its Absence Series of photographic performances, 15 photos, digital printing, lightboxes, photo wallpapers, 2020 In collaboration with the Krakow theater Teatr52Hz, located on the Hel Peninsula on the Baltic coast of Poland.

The performance was born in the winds of the Baltic Sea, at a time when the absence of our beloved southern Crimean coast was felt especially acutely in every breath of the northern horizon. Although the contemplative horizon was much the same, it could not substitute the native scenery; there were holes in it, as if the memory were torn apart.

Olena Kovach invited the participants to take turns to cut their own pieces of the ‘Black Sea’ from a roll of black cloth, against which they were then photographed. Later the artist offered them, in addition to their portrait, their own hole in the ‘Black Sea’ — their silhouette cut out from the cloth in order to feel their own absence against the backdrop of the coast.

The poses and moods came from the models themselves, who, while being shot, commented on their feelings in the face of the loss. After the action, having picked up the clippings of the ‘Black Sea’ and on her way to the dump, one of the participants stopped her, saying that the action was not over — it is just a matter of time till the holes are stitched together again.

Video documentation of photo performance, 15’42’’, 2020

This action took place on a beach on the Baltic coast with the participation of the Krakow theater Teatr52Hz acting as a spectator and simultaneously performing the role of a border, the movements of which repeatedly squeezed the fugitive. A fugitive, a refugee, a displaced person (in continuous mode) makes their way somewhere into the unknown, trying to build a new life somewhere outside of their home.

The artist’s job is to break free from statistics and geopolitical considerations in order to stand beside the victims of these territorial changes and movements. Displaced idividuals. Where? How? What conditions accompany these movements? These are just questions. A person who has lost his/her home has been moved into obscurity.

Olha Kuziura was born in 1990 in Mostyska, Lviv region. In 2013 she received a Master’s degree in Design at the National University of Forestry. From 2013 to 2016 she studied in postgraduate school at Lviv National Academy of Arts. She has been a Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine since 2017.

She works with visual arts, text, in the fields of experimental and traditional graphics, painting, installation. She is an author and participant of numerous projects in Ukraine and abroad, in particular in the USA, Germany, Italy, Poland, Croatia. She has experience working in international residences in Ukraine and abroad. In her artistic practices she turns to autobiographical motives in the context of collective self-consciousness.

Working with the phenomena of collective and individual memory, she explores the gaps in her own history. She lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.

Інсталяція, чортополох, розміри варіюються, 2021 Людина здобуває досвід існування на межі завершення старого світу й переходу в новий. Брак моделей, яких можна дотримуватися, призводить до розгубленості та відчаю. У глобалізованому й фрагментованому світі концепція лінійності часу втратила свою актуальність. Кожен момент може стати новою точкою відліку. Цей надлишок свободи вибору підриває екзистенційну безпеку людини. Зросла особиста відповідальність за стратегію існування, що змусило шукати нову константу. Звернення до руху та постійної дії вже не цивілізаційне рішення, а єдиний спосіб зберегти рівновагу. Щоденні зусилля, докладені до розбудови власного світу, — постійна гра, яку неможливо припинити. Швидкість, з якою матерія рухається до хаосу, не дозволяє зупинятися: пауза небезпечна. Сад як місце безпеки утримує при житті лише постійна опіка. Для його балансу ми змушені повсякчас прибирати зайве, щодня полоти бур’ян. Проєкт утворює масштабна інсталяція з чортополоху, що є контроб’ємом, контрформою цього саду. Від’ємна матерія — початкова точка відліку саду, це потенційна форма, яка чомусь не перейшла в кінцевий об’єм, не ввійшла в категорію прекрасного. З розвитком саду розростається його контрформа, структурно та енергетично полюсна матерія, що і є основним досвідом митця, людини сьогодні. Основним матеріалом інсталяції є чортополох / реп’яхи / будяки — поширений колючий бур’ян, який у народі наділяють сильними негативними властивостями, такий, що здатен відлякувати душі покійників та чортів, вважається непотребом.

My Game

Installation, thistle, various sizes, 2021 A human gains a new experience by being on the verge of completing one world and moving to a new one. The lack of the models to follow leads to confusion and despair. In a globalized and fragmented world, the concept of the linearity of time has lost its relevance. Each moment can be a new standpoint. This excess of freedom of choices undermines human existential security. Personal responsibility for developing a strategy for existence has increased, which has necessitated the search for a new constant. Appealing to movement, or constant action, is no longer a just civilizational solution, it is the only way to maintain equilibrium.

The daily effort to build your own world is an ongoing game which cannot be stopped. The speed at which matter moves to chaos does not allow stopping — a pause is dangerous. The garden, as a place of safety, is kept alive only by permanent care. For its balance, we have to constantly remove unnecessary weeds every day.

The project is made from a large-scale installation of thistle, which is the counter-volume, or counter-form, of this garden. This negative matter is the starting point of the garden; it is a potential form which for some reason did not go into the final volume, did not fall into the category of beautiful. With the development of the garden and its counter-form, structurally and energetically polarized matter grows, an event that is the main experience of an artist, or of a man today.

The main material of the installation is thistle, a common barbed weed that is popularly believed to be endowed with strong negative properties, such as the ability to scare off the souls of the dead and devils, but it is considered unnecessary.

Ольга Кузюра | Olha Kuzyura

Ольга Кузюра народилася 1990 року в місті Мостиська Львівської області. У 2013-му здобула звання магістра дизайну в Національному лісотехнічному університеті. З 2013 по 2016 рік навчалася в аспірантурі у Львівській національній академії мистецтв. Членкиня Національної спілки художників України з 2017 року. Працює з візуальним мистецтвом, текстом, у галузях експериментальної та станкової графіки, живопису, інсталяції. Авторка та учасниця численних проєктів в Україні та за її межами, зокрема в США, Німеччині, Італії, Польщі, Хорватії. Має досвід роботи в межах міжнародних резиденцій в Україні й за кордоном. У своїй мистецькій практиці звертається до автобіографічних мотивів у контексті колективної самосвідомості. Працюючи з феноменами колективної та індивідуальної пам’яті, досліджує прочерки у власній історії. Живе і працює у Львові.

Zoia Laktionova was born in 1984 in Mariupol. She first appeared in the world of documentary cinema as the heroine of Mariia Stoianova’s film Ma (2017), and a year later made her first short documentary, Diorama, about a mined sea. The film won an award in the MyStreetFilms category at the 86 Festival and participated in numerous European film festivals (DOK Leipzig, Ji.Hlava, Cottbus, etc) and was released in Ukrainian cinemas in 2019.

In 2021, she presented her new short film The Territory of Empty Windows at Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, and also screened it in cinemas at Molodist IFF in Kyiv. The international premiere took place at the MakeDox, Northern Macedonia.

The artist now lives in Kyiv and works as an independent documentary film director.

She works with themes of war, memory and personal stories.

Документальний фільм про людей, які з різних причин залишаються жити в сірій зоні й стають невидимими жертвами війни. Їх немає в офіційній статистиці. Люди тихо помирають не від осколків і снарядів, а через стрес. Історію цих людей художниця розповідає за допомогою інтерв’ю з мамою. Війна та занедбана екологія — дві теми, якими пронизана буденність жителів Маріуполя. Друга світова війна і завод стають причиною переїзду родини Зоїної мами до Маріуполя. Війна з Росією та екологічні наслідки роботи заводу відіграють ключову роль у їхньому подальшому житті.

The Territory of Empty Windows Video, 10’09’’, 2020

This documentary is about people who, for various reasons, remain living in the ‘gray zone’ and become invisible victims of the war in eastern Ukrainian. They do not show up in the official war statistics. These people die quietly. And it is not shrapnel and shells that kill them, but stress.

The artist tells the story of these people through an interview with her mother. War and neglected ecology are two themes that permeate the everyday life of Mariupol residents. World War II and the factory were the reasons that Zoia’s mother’s family moved to Mariupol. But now the war with Russia along with the environmental consequences of the plant’s operation play a dramatic role in her future life.

Зоя Лактіонова | Zoia Laktionova

Зоя Лактіонова народилася 1984 року в Маріуполі. Уперше потрапила у світ документального кіно як героїня фільму «Ма» (2017) Марії Стоянової, а через рік зняла свій перший короткометражний документальний фільм про заміноване море «Діорама». Фільм отримав нагороду в категорії MyStreetFilms на фестивалі «86», брав участь у численних європейських кінофестивалях (DOK Leipzig, Ji.Hlava, Cottbus etc) та був у кінотеатральному прокаті в Україні 2019-го. У 2021 році презентувала свій новий короткометражний фільм «Територія пустих вікон» на Міжнародному фестивалі документального кіно про права людини Docudays UA, а також показала його в кінотеатрах на МФФ «Молодість» у Києві. Міжнародна прем’єра відбулася на МКФ MakeDox, Північна Македонія. Художниця живе в Києві та працює як незалежна режисерка документального кіно. Працює з темами війни, пам’яті та особистими історіями.

Anna Manankina was born in 1995 in Kharkiv.

She is an interdisciplinary media artist, working in the field of digital technology with video, VR and AR, installation, 3D animation, and sound, with an emphasis on posthumanism and feminist practice. Her artistic expressions cover a wide range of problems: from geopolitical situations and power structures to purely intimate spheres of life. She addresses the topic of violence and gender identity, the state of women in artistic and social contexts.

She was a finalist in the Exter cultural exchange program (with the support of the Ukrainian Institute) and a scholarship holder of the Gaude Polonia 2021 program from the Polish National Cultural Center. She participated in the 19th WRO 2021 Media Art Biennale in Wroclaw. She worked on a joint project with the ROTOR Gallery in Graz, Austria, and on a personal project at the Sopa Gallery (Košice, Slovakia) at the KAIR residency. She was a participant of Construction Festival (Dnipro) in cooperation with CYNETART (Germany). She is a finalist in the Non-Stop Media Biennale for Young Artists. Her works have been exhibited in Slovakia, Germany, Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania.

Інсталяція, тканина, метал, синтепон, відеопроєкція, звук, 70×170×50 см, 2020 Звична картина світу розвалилася так само, як розкладаються об’єкти та істоти в біосфері. На противагу міфу про безмежну утопію, людство стає свідком забруднення міського довкілля, гібридності його мікроклімату й інтенсивного руйнування екосистеми. Адже сфери природи та культури невіддільні одна від одної, як води в бурхливій річці. Анна Мананкіна створила цей проєкт на резиденції KAIR у Словаччині, куди потрапила за тиждень перед початком карантину й закриттям кордонів. Тоді ж, під час соціальної ізоляції, вона вирішила заглибитися в теоретичні дослідження, зокрема роботу Фелікса Ґваттарі «Три екології» (1989), яка вразила її свіжістю і точністю описуваних подій. Згадана в ній ситуація істотно погіршилася, а нерозривно пов’язані ментальні, соціальні та екологічні аспекти життя нині відіграють вирішальну роль у розвитку суспільства. З позиції ментальної екології в людської психіки є своя «імунна» система. Вона сприймає реальність так, щоб життя було прийнятним — люди вірять у краще майбутнє, фокусуються на повній частині склянки, ігноруючи порожню. Властивість психіки розбавляти сприйняття реальності ілюзіями допомагає виживати, оберігаючи від повторного занурення в травматичний досвід. Пандемія змусила звернути увагу на смерть — вона стала видимою і близькою, про неї масово інформують, її ретельно підраховують. Утрата близької людини пов’язана з горем, яке набирає різних форм і відрізняється в різних культурах. Почуття ж екологічної тривоги визначає те, що біосфера є невіддільною частиною нашого психічного здоров’я, наших спільнот, наших культур і здатності виживати у світі тотального антропоцентризму. Проте колективний досвід екологічного горя має творчий потенціал і здатність трансформуватися в посилене відчуття любові та прихильності місцям, екосистемам і видам, які підтримують нас, а також стає інструментом запобігання таких утрат у майбутньому.

Elephant in the Room

Installation, fabric, metal, synthetic winterizer (sintepon), video projection, sound, 70×170×50 см, 2020 Objects and creatures are decomposing the same way our familiar picture of the world is falling apart. No Green Eden here, humanity becomes the witness of ecological urban pollution, the hybridity of its climate, and potentially catastrophically destructive force. After all, the spheres of nature and culture are inseparable from each other, like water in a stormy river.

Anna Manankina created this project within the KAIR residence, where she arrived a week before the implementation of the quarantine regime and complete border closure. There, amidst social isolation, she decided to focus on theoretical research resulting from the publication by Felix Guattari, Three Ecology, which impressed her with the freshness and accuracy of the events it described. The problems mentioned in it have significantly worsened, and the inextricably linked mental, social and ecological aspects of life are playing a crucial role in transforming society.

The human psyche has its own ‘immune’ system. It interprets reality in a way that makes life more acceptable. People believe in a better future, they perceive the full part of the glass instead of the empty one. The mind has the ability to mitigate the perception of reality by illusions, helping us to survive and protecting us from the possible traumas of hard reality.

The pandemic forced us to pay attention to death, it became visible and close, it is widely reported, it is carefully counted. The loss of a loved one is deeply associated with grief. Grief takes many forms and differs greatly between individuals and cultures. The feeling of environmental anxiety determines that the biosphere is an integral part of our mental health, our communities, our cultures and our ability to survive in a world of total anthropocentrism. However, the collective experience of ecological grief has the creative potential and ability to transform into an enhanced sense of love and commitment to the places, ecosystems and species that support us, while also becoming a tool for the prevention of similar losses in the future.

Анна Мананкіна | Anna Manankina

Анна Мананкіна народилася 1995 року в Харкові. Міждисциплінарна медіахудожниця, працює у сфері цифрових технологій з відео, VR та AR, інсталяцією, 3D-анімацією, звуком, з акцентом на постгуманізм і феміністську практику. У своїх художніх висловлюваннях охоплює широке коло проблем — від геополітичних ситуацій та владних структур до суто інтимних сфер життя. Звертається до теми насильства та гендерної ідентичності, стану жінки в художньому і соціальному контексті. Фіналістка програми культурного обміну «Екстер» (за підтримки Українського інституту). Стипендіатка програми Gaude Polonia 2021 від польського Національного центру культури. Учасниця XIX медіаартбієнале WRO 2021 у Вроцлаві. Pavla Nikitina was born in 1997 in Kyiv, where she studied at Taras Shevchenko State Art High School, then continued her studies at the Secondary Technical Art School of Stonework and Sculpture in Hořice (Czech Republic), specializing in stone-sculpting.

Pavla is currently studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic) in Sculpture Studio 1, where she practices sculpture in its classical and modern techniques, from academic methods to 3D modeling.

The core of Pavla Nikitina’s artistic practice is working with new technologies, as well as psychological and social research of specific phenomena within the medium of sculpture.

Pavla Nikitina’s works are presented in the collection of the National Museum of Montenegro (2019, Cetinje, Montenegro), as well as in private collections in Ukraine and the Czech Republic. She has participated in group exhibitions including Na rozhraní (On the border) at Museum of Art and Design Benesov (2021, Benesov, Czech Republic), Exodus at the Museum of History of Kyiv (2019, Kyiv, Ukraine), Outside These Walls at SVA Flatiron Gallery (2018, New York, USA), and others.

3D-друк на гіпсовій основі, метал, фанера, 40×35×23 см, 2019 У цьому проєкті Павла Нікітіна повертається до ситуації з дитинства, щоб провести психологічний аналіз. Зовсім маленькою вона отримала ці старовинні металеві іграшки в подарунок, але була дуже засмучена невідповідністю розмірів усіх предметів і відмовилася гратися з ними. Зіткнулася з проблемою, імені якої ще не знала. Це був візуальний дисонанс. Тепер художниця осмислює цей стан психологічної напруженості, який виникає, коли людина відчуває диспропорцію між тим, що очікує побачити, і тим, що бачить насправді. Але в дитинстві вона усвідомлювала лише відсутність логіки в непропорційному співвідношенні різних предметів. Тільки через п’ятнадцять років вона захотіла дістати іграшки з горища й зробити проєкт, у якому наділяє цю диспропорцію змістом, посилюючи її. Замість ідеалізувати ситуацію та створювати правильні пропорції між іграшками й фігурами, Павла Нікітіна зробила скульптури себе — разюче непропорційними кожному предмету, крім однієї фігури. Завдяки математичним прорахункам мисткиня виявила, що чайник є найменш редукованим об’єктом, а отже, найближчим до реальності. Тому фігура, яка виходить за межі композиції в момент здійснення першого кроку в реальність, пропорційна до чайника. У дитинстві недосконалість речей у реальному світі блокувала уяву художниці. Постфактум Нікітіна відшукала вихід із цього стану за допомогою обчислення пропорцій, які допомогли їй створити власну систему в безглуздій непропорційності іграшок.

The Least Reduced

3D printing on gypsum basis, metal, plywood, 40×35×23 см, 2019 This project brings back situations from childhood in order to perform psychological analysis. When the artist was very young, she received these antique metal toys as a gift. The big disproportionality of the toys made her very angry, which she later discovered was a result of a state of psychological tension known as visual dissonance.

Now the artist understands the psychological tension that arises when a person perceives a disparity between what she expects to see and what she actually sees. As a child, however, she was only aware of the lack of logic in the disproportionate ratio of different subjects. Fifteen years later, she decided to get toys out of the attic and make a project in which she gives meaning to this disproportion, reinforcing it.

Instead of idealizing the situation and creating the proper proportions between toys and figures, Pavla Nikitina created sculptures of herself, which were noticeably disproportionate to all but one figure. Due to mathematical errors, the artist discovered that a kettle is the least reduced object and thus the closest to reality. As a result, the figure that extends beyond the composition during the first step into reality is proportional to the kettle.

As a child, the imperfection of things in the real world blocked the artist’s imagination. Post factum the artist found a way out of this situation by calculating the proportions that helped her create her own system in the senseless disproportionality of toys.

Павла Нікітіна народилася 1997 року в Києві. Навчалася в Державній художній середній школі імені Т. Г. Шевченка, потім продовжила навчання в середній Художньо-промисловій школі обробки каменю і скульптури в місті Горжиці (Чехія), спеціалізуючись на скульптурі з каменю. Нині Павла навчається на факультеті образотворчих мистецтв технічного університету в місті Брно (Чехія) у Скульптурній майстерні 1, де практикує скульптуру в її класичних та новітніх техніках — від академічних методів до 3D-моделювання. Основною мистецькою практикою Павли Нікітіної є робота з новими технологіями як такими, а також психологічні та соціальні дослідження конкретних явищ у медіумі скульптури. Роботи Павли Нікітіної представлені в збірці Національного музею Чорногорії (2019, Цетинє, Чорногорія), у приватних колекціях в Україні та Чехії. Oleksandr Sirous is a media and sound artist.

He was born in 1996 in Kharkiv. He studied at the Kharkiv Art Collage in the painting department and at the Kharkiv Academy of Design and Arts in the department of graphics. In 2017–2018 was the curator of the new media art course in HudpromLoft (Kharkiv). In 2018 was the curator of the course of new media art in the Kharkiv Academy of Visual Arts.

In 2019 he became one of the founders of FRONTIER, a VR and AR festival in Kharkiv.

Мультидисциплінарна інсталяція, генеративна анімація, відеопроєкція, звуковий перформанс, нейромережа, 2020 Автор ідеї, режисер — Олександр Сіроус. Веброзробка — Данило Сябро, анімація — PRYVYD, саунддизайн — Макс Роботов. Основою роботи є нова загальна реальність, що формується на перетині різних культурних кодів. Уособленням цих кодів стають принципи та стилістичні засоби певних періодів світового анімаційного та кіномистецтва. За своєю формою робота є роздумом про суспільство та спілкування, яке існує в ньому. Перші секунди роботи — це умовний «чистий аркуш», на якому поступово виникають персонажі та фрагменти їхнього навколишнього середовища. Тригером до цих «появ» стають звуки у виставковому приміщенні. «Чистий аркуш» перетворюється на робочий простір, поділений на елементарні соціальні структури (кадри), що визначають культурний код (анімаційний стиль) персонажів, які в них фігурують. Незалежно від «бажання» персонажі вимушені спілкуватися між собою, формуючи звуковий ряд і в такий спосіб провокуючи появу інших персонажів. Це експоненційне множення стає наскрізною темою, розмовою про незворотність подій та часу.

Cпівіснуючи, персонажі виходять зі своїх кадрів і поступово перетинаються. Але все, на що вони здатні, — відтворювати заздалегідь сформовану поведінку та діалоги, що їх сформувала нейронна мережа на основі фраз / цитат героїв світового кіно. Однак те, що спочатку бачиться / розглядається як принципова неможливість спілкування, насправді є частиною процесу формування нової загальної реальності, учасником якої є кожен.

The work is based on the formation of a new common reality at the intersection of various cultural codes. These codes are personified by the principles and stylistic means of specific periods of animation and cinema from around the world.

Work, in its most basic form, is a reflection of society and the communication that exists within it.

The first seconds of the work are like a ‘blank sheet’ on which characters and fragments of their surroundings gradually emerge. The sounds in the exhibition space serve as the catalyst for these ‘appearances’. The ‘blank sheet’ is transformed into a workspace, which is divided into basic social structures (frames) that define the cultural code (animation style) of the characters who appear in them.

Regardless of their ‘desire’, the characters are compelled to communicate with one another, creating a soundtrack and, as a result, provoking the appearance of other characters. This exponential multiplication becomes a recurring theme, sparking a discussion about the irreversibility of events and time.

The characters leave their frames and gradually intersect while coexisting.

However, they are only capable of reproducing pre-formed behaviours and dialogues formed by a neural network based on phrases / quotes from heroes drawn from world cinema. What appears to be the fundamental impossibility of communication is, in fact, part of the process of forming a new common reality in which everyone is a participant.

Олександр Сіроус — медіа- та саундхудожник. Народився 1996 року в Харкові. Навчався в Харківському художньому коледжі на кафедрі живопису і в Харківській академії дизайну та мистецтв на кафедрі графіки. У 2017–2018 роках — куратор курсу «Нове медіамистецтво» в HudpromLoft (Харків). У 2018-му — куратор курсу «Мистецтво нових медіа» в Харківській академії образотворчого мистецтва. У 2019 році став одним із засновників FRONTIER — VR/AR-фестивалю в Харкові. З 2019 року — викладач курсу 3D-програмування в Kyiv Academy of Media Arts. Живе і працює в Києві.

Mariia Stoianova was born in 1986 in Kyiv.

She is a documentary film director. She graduated from Kyiv-Mohyla Academy with a degree in cultural studies and from the Central European University with a degree in social anthropology. She has made seven short films, including as a screenwriter and editing director.

Her film Ma has won awards at several international film festivals. Stoianova has participated in such programs for young filmmakers as East-West Talent Lab, B2B Doc, IDFA Academy, and studied in Serhii Bukovskyi’s DOC Workshop. She is currently developing her debut feature film Fragments of Ice. Selected filmography: Second Wave (2020), Over the Styx (2019), Ma (2017), Exarch (2014).

Експериментальний фільм, 5’28’’, 2020 «Друга хвиля» — короткометражний фільм, який балансує між документалістикою та експериментом. Створений 2020 року, коли всі чекали на другу хвилю пандемії. Відштовхуючись від теми «співжиття в часи коронавірусу», режисерка розказує про свого дідуся та про (не)можливість для них перебувати поруч. Як рівноцінний матеріал до сучасних зйомок вона використовує архівні кадри з освітнього фільму Британської енциклопедії «Waves on Water» (1989). Монтажно ці два шари відтворюють атмосферу коливання між відстороненістю і залученістю, повторюваністю і унікальністю, пов’язаністю і неможливістю бути поруч. Своєю конструкцією і темпоритмом фільм задуманий як такий, що задає майже фізичне відчуття хвиль. Використання сучасної та архівної фотографії стають виключними подіями фіналу фільму: вони належать глибині, де хвиля більше не рухає частинки води. Вони співвідносяться з пам’яттю, зупинкою, безпекою, смертю. Для експонування в просторі галереї медіум фільму доповнили — на підлозі з’явилася сигнальна розмітка пунктиром та два місця для сидіння на дистанції один до одного й до екрана. Ці об’єкти є референтними до фільму та задумані як такі, що посилюють семантичний зв’язок «відстань між людьми — довжина хвилі».

The Second Wave Experimental film, 5’28’’, 2020

The Second Wave is a short film that balances between documentary and experiment. It was created in 2020, when everyone was waiting for the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting from the theme ‘coexistence in the days of the coronavirus’, the director talks about her grandfather and the (im)possibility of them being near one another.

As an equivalent material to modern filming, she uses archival footage from an educational film of the British encyclopedia entitled Waves on Water (1989). Edited, these two layers recreate an atmosphere of oscillation between detachment and attraction, repetition and uniqueness, bonding and the inability to be close.

The film’s construction, pace, and rhythm are designed to create an almost physical sensation of waves. The use of modern and archival photography transforms into exceptional events in the film’s finale. They belong to the depth where the wave no longer moves water particles. They correlate with memory, pause, safety, and death.

The medium of the film has been supplemented for display in the gallery space: a dotted signal marking appears on the floor and two seats, at a distance from each other and from the screen. These objects are references to the film and are intended to strengthen the semantic connection ‘distance between people — wavelength’.

Починаючи з 2012 року курирував створення багатьох муралів в Україні, зокрема портрета Сергія Нігояна й диптиха «Інтересних Казок». У 2019–2020-му був куратором виставок у київському артпросторі «Маяк».

Curator of visual projects, collector of works by contemporary Ukrainian and foreign artists (more than 400 works in the collection, mainly graphic art and photography). Since 2012, he has been the curator of art projects for the French Spring festival in Ukraine, and curated the production of many murals in Ukraine, in particular the portrait of Sergii Nigoyan, the diptych of Interesni Kazki and others. Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum Kyiv (ACF).

The ACF is part of the international cultural relations division of the Austrian foreign service. Its task is the promotion of the cultural exchange between Austria and Ukraine through a variety of programmes. In 2019 the ACF played a major role in the implementation of the bilateral Cultural Year Austria — Ukraine which led to numerous new cooperations and projects. All activities are part of an on-going effort to foster the building of cultural sector networks between Ukraine and the EU. Творчі люди завжди на крок попереду, вони сміливіші за інших. Там, де нас обмежують очікування чи стереотипи, — вони йдуть далі. Мистецтво — це безумовна свобода, особливий погляд на сучасність, вивертання, дослідження емоцій, які є реакцією на події навколо. Це потребує особливої рішучості чи навіть зухвалості. Мистецтво відбувається тут і зараз, воно не живе за законами економіки, принаймні в момент зародження — у майстерні. Тут неймовірно важливий початок, відсутність іншого впливу — лише творчий подих. Проєкт МУХі люблю з першої зустрічі з ним. Ось уже кільканадцять років стежу за художниками, які з’являлися в проєкті, бо маю особливу любов до тих, хто починає, хто не зупиняється, тому що й сама завжди рухаюся вперед. Проєкт МУХі — це можливість, яка часто є тією самою missing link — ланкою, що створює перехід між творчим та публічним, адже на мистецтво треба дивитися. Я сама живу в сучасності, тому розумію мистецтво, яке відбувається тут і зараз, одночасно зі мною. Мені цікаво співвідносити наші емоції та реакції, відчувати, реагувати, співдіяти — постійно рухатися. Люблю мистецтво безумовно, бо ми з ним крокуємо в унісон.

Creative people are always one step ahead — they are bolder than others. In those matters where we are limited by expectations or stereotypes, creative people go further. Art is unconditional freedom, a special view of the present, a twist, a study of emotions that are a reaction to the events around. And this requires special determination or even audacity.

Art takes place here, and, now, it does not live by the laws of economics, at least at the time of its genesis — in the studio. Here is an incredibly important beginning, in the absence of other influences — just a creative breath.

I have loved the MUHi project since my first meeting with it. I have been following the artists who have appeared in the project for several years now. I think this is because I have a special bias towards those who start and those who do not stop. After all, I am always moving myself forward. The MUHi project, as an opportunity, is often the same missing link that creates a transition between the creative and the public, because art needs to be looked at.

I live in the present, so I understand the art that takes place here and now, contemporaneously with me. I am interested in correlating our emotions and reactions, feeling, reacting, sometimes going against, but constantly moving.

I love art because we walk in unison with it.

В Україні надзвичайно мало сучасного мистецтва. Його мало всюди: у театрі, музиці, кіно, образотворчому мистецтві. Пошук нового та інновації є природним станом для кожного покоління молодих митців. Але пагонам нового надзвичайно важко пробитися з консервної банки, у якій, здається, перебуває українська культура вже багато років. Я щиро вдячний небагатьом ентузіастам, що не полишають зусиль розбурхати культурне середовище, створити можливості молодим художникам не тільки виразитися, а й залишитися в професії. Звичайно, МУХі — один з небагатьох знакових проєктів, який не тільки висвітлює процеси, що відбуваються в молодому українському мистецтві, а й здатен стати трампліном до визнання художника, вбудовуючи їх в український і міжнародний контексти. Окремо хочеться подякувати Марині Щербенко за те, що виводить конкурс на новий рівень в умовах, у яких в інших давно опустились би руки.

There is a catastrophic lack of contemporary art in Ukraine. It is scarce everywhere — in theater, music, cinema, fine arts. The search for new innovation is a natural state for each new generation of young artists.

But it is extremely difficult for the shoots of the new to break out of the container, which seems to have housed Ukrainian culture for many years. I am very grateful for the efforts of the few enthusiasts who refuse to abandon their efforts to stir up the cultural environment, and to create opportunities for young artists to not only express themselves, but also to stay in the profession.

Of course, MUHi is one of the few iconic projects that not only highlights the processes taking place in young Ukrainian art, but also is able to become a springboard for the recognition of artists, embedding them in the Ukrainian and international context. I would like to especially thank Maryna Shcherbenko, who every year brings the competition to a new level, even in conditions in which others would have lost their grip long ago.

It is best to have such a dialogue through art — that is why we publish exquisite art and photo editions, and why we are holding the Ukrainian Young Book Design Awards for the third time and are happy to be partners of MUHi 2021 and the MUHi 2009–2021 book project. There should be more high-quality contemporary art, Ukrainian artists should be able to more boldly express their ideas, and then, I’m sure, the world will hear them. Культурний сектор має вагомі інструменти впливу на суспільство. Саме його розвиток впливає на економіко-політичну ситуацію та освіту. Ба більше, від його рівня залежить духовний стан суспільства. На тлі викликів, що постають перед українцями за роки незалежності, формується спільнота ініціативних людей, які усвідомлюють свою особисту місію — підтримувати культурний сектор. Сучасні художники гостро відчувають реальність, переосмислюють минуле й сьогодення, продукують рефлексії на події. Підтримуючи сучасне мистецтво, ми провокуємо розвиток інших напрямів культури, а через них й інших секторів — і в такий спосіб свідомо робимо внесок у наше майбутнє. Основні життєві принципи формуються в юності. Те, що молодь і далі вибирає в Україні цей складний шлях митця, попри несталість і відсутність стабільної підтримки культурного сектору від держави, дає нам, людям бізнесу, віру в якісні зміни в усіх інших секторах. Наша відповідальність — підтримати, допомогти, скерувати молодих українських художників. Особливо важливо це на початку їхнього творчого шляху.

The cultural sector has important tools to influence society. It is its development that affects the economic and political situation, and education. Moreover, the spiritual state of society depends on its level of development. Against the background of the challenges facing Ukrainians during the years of independence, a community of enterprising people is being formed who are aware of their mission — to support the cultural sector. Contemporary artists acutely feel reality, rethink the past and present, and reflect on events.

By supporting contemporary art, we provoke development in other areas of culture, and through these other sectors we consciously contribute to our future.

The basic principles of life are formed in adolescence.

The fact that young people in Ukraine continue to choose the difficult path of the artist, despite the instability and lack of stable state support for the cultural sector, gives us, the business people, faith in a qualitative change in all other sectors. Our responsibility is to support, help and guide young Ukrainian artists. This is especially important at the early stages of their creative journey.
