The George Marshall Store Gallery is a contemporary art space housed in a 19th century general store on the beautiful York River. OGUNQUIT
The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA), founded in 1953 by Lost Generation artist Henry Strater, remains deeply connected to the history of art colonies and schools around the Ogunquit area. Open May 1 to October 31, this season OMAA highlights paintings, sculptures, historic photography, political cartoons, and a dash of hopefulness. Exhibitions include Josephine Halvorson: On the Ground and Philip Koch: Isle of Dreams (May 1 to July 19) and Sue Miller: Personal Voyage and John Walker: From Low Tide to High Tide (August 1 to October 31) as well as six season-long exhibitions. In addition to the brilliant indoor collection of American art from the late 1800s to the present, enjoy the Museum’s stunning three acres of seaside property boasting a sculpture park with 18 small gardens throughout. Perfect for selfies and relaxation!

PORTLAND The Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA) is an organization dedicated to providing advocacy and support for Maine’s community of visual artists. The gallery at the Portland Media Center is part of this mission, providing exhibition space for contemporary local artists, such as Joanne Tarlin. Tarlin lives in Maine where the rocky coast and forests meet the tides, so it is only natural that she renders them in her paintings. This summer, Tarlin’s work speaks to today’s headlines—climate change, social injustice, and the pandemic. Tarlin’s frustrations with our inability to act on these issues is evident in her dynamic compositions, terse and twisted lines, and stormy seas and skies that portray the tensions of our
times. She titles her paintings with references to these situations in her solo exhibition Sea Changes: Transformations Wanted, on view August 5–28 in Portland at the UMVA Gallery at the Portland Media Center. The Maine Museum of Photographic Art is the only museum in Maine dedicated solely to the art of photography. Located in bustling downtown Portland, your stop here could easily last days. The Museum’s next exhibition, Constructed and Found, opens July 1 and will be on view until August 23. The exhibition features photographs by Luc Demers, John Woodruff, Damir Porobic, and Brendan Bullock. Constructed and Found refers to the photographers’ meditative process of image-

The Museum is the heart of a vibrant community of Maine photographic artists and the site of extraordinary exhibitions that address expansive themes and explore important questions. Photography is fascinating—from both an artistic and technical point of view. Established in 1977, Greenhut Galleries is Portland’s oldest year-round gallery. Located in the heart of the historic and beautiful Old Port district, this esteemed gallery is a microcosm of the brilliant Portland art scene, featuring the work of some of Maine’s finest contemporary artists. The main gallery
features shifting work by all of the resident artists, while the back gallery features solo exhibitions. Both gallery shows rotate monthly and include periodic group and themed exhibitions. Upcoming summer exhibitions include the architectural realist Thomas Connolly Solo Exhibition (July 7–30) and the American realist John Whalley Solo Exhibition (August 4–27). While gallery-hopping through town, make sure to visit Greenhut’s nearby sister location Cove Street Arts. Cove Street Arts is an interdisciplinary art space and celebration of Maine’s place in American art history, with a mission of promoting contemporary Maine art, contributing to the Maine arts economy, and engaging
with the vibrant and growing East Bayside community. Founded by co-directors Kelley Lehr and John Danos, who acquired Greenhut Galleries in 2016, the art center offers workshops and art-centered educational opportunities as well as gallery space. The 8,000 square foot exhibition space is dedicated to showing the breadth and depth of fine art being made in this state and demonstrating how vital Maine’s art scene continues to be. The gallery space holds multiple exhibitions at a time and opens a new exhibition each month, keeping the experience fresh. The space also includes a bookstore and small works gallery, event and workshop space, and a full-size, retractable movie screen for video art installations and film screenings.

MAINE Arts impresario Elizabeth Moss founded Moss Galleries in Falmouth, ME in 2004 with the dream of being at the forefront of advancing and heralding Maine’s role in American art. Over the next 17 years, Moss Galleries has become a gallery of national and international repute, recently named one of the top 500 Galleries in North America by ArtInfo. Moss established her Portland location last year in the summer of 2021, expanding the Moss Galleries reach to include Maine’s largest city. The galleries represent a plethora of artists and artistic styles from abstract to traditional seascapes. The Portland location will feature artists Billy Gerard Frank from July 8–August 18 and Anne Ireland from August 19–September 10. If you’re stopping by the flagship Falmouth gallery,

WISCASSET
The Maine Art Gallery is a seasonal gallery and non-profit organization located in the iconic Red Brick Schoolhouse, historical site of the Old Wiscasset Academy, near downtown Wiscasset. The gallery was founded in 1958 by Maine artist and Wiscasset resident Mildred Burrage. Maine Art Gallery exhibits visual works from Maine artists and also offer lectures, demonstrations, and other educational programs for adults and
children alike. Exhibits in the mid-summer and early fall include Surroundings, exploring the circumstances, conditions, or objects by which one is surrounded (July 16–August 13), Collective Imagination, bringing together the works of seven abstract artists and their mentor (August 20–September 17), and a members’ show, Made in Maine (September 24–October 22). Wiscasset is charming—park your car and simply wander and enjoy.

Inspired and informed by the invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, artist Lesia Sochor, who is of Ukrainian descent, and Cordula Mathias designed an exhibition focused on the colors of Ukraine. Invited artists responded to the idea and came together to create this exhibition of paintings, photographs, and mixed media pieces, all incorporating the Ukraine’s blue and yellow. The powerful exploration of this theme brings new context into the exhibition work of this gallery, allowing artists and visitors to

Calling all writers and artists! 26 Split Rock Cove is a small, privately-owned artist community that offers workshops in writing and artmaking as well as studio space and rental apartments for artists and writers to explore their creative passions. 26 Split Rock Cove is located on three acres of coastal farmland overlooking
Founded in 1952, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) has risen from a small backroom start-up to the state’s premier contemporary arts organization. CMCA is housed in an innovative building designed for the organization by New York-based architect Toshiko Mori. MONHEGAN ISLAND Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ferry ride out of Port Clyde, New Harbor, or Boothbay Harbor on your way out to visit Monhegan Island and the Monhegan Museum of Art & History. You simply cannot vacation in Maine without time spent on the water and Monhegan is a quiet and contemplative getaway like no other. The Monhegan Museum of Art & History is housed in a sprawl of historic homes, reconstructed buildings, and outbuildings associated with the restored Monhegan lighthouse. The museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying artifacts and artworks representing the history of the Island and
continues to find innovative ways to do so. In the summer of 2022, the Museum will celebrate the life and art of James Fitzgerald (1899–1971) with an exhibition focusing especially on Fitzgerald’s paintings of Monhegan Island, which he visited several times in the 1930s before making the island his permanent residence. With the help of his good friends and patrons, Anne and Edgar Hubert, he purchased a home and studio built by Rockwell Kent—buildings that are now part of the Monhegan Museum.
LINCOLNVILLE
Maine-based artist Petrea Noyes has been making art for more than 50 years and has had her work shown in group and solo exhibitions across New England and beyond. Her methods
and mediums have changed over the years, from oils and acrylics to digital software and a tablet, and now back to acrylics and high gloss varnishes, the old-fashioned way. Noyes is represented by Portland Art Gallery, with many of her works currently visible and available on their website. Petrea Noyes currently resides in the small seaside town of Lincolnville, Maine, where she keeps her studio.

MAINE MAINE this season are Nina Jerome, Lari Washburn, Robin Reynolds, Carol Pelletier, to name just a few. The sculpture garden is always evolving, seamlessly mixing art with nature, with new works from Melita Westerlund this season. The late summer show, Patterns of Light, which opened in late June, features David Hornung, M. P. Landis, and Diane Bowie Zaitlin. Cynthia Winings is excited to present a new “Project Space” within the gallery, which will include emerging artists, unique events, and collaborations with the community. Located in scenic
Blue Hill, Maine, this gallery is a must-stop location for art appreciators.
DEER ISLE Down the Blue Hill Peninsula, across the bridge, lies Deer Isle, and on it a unique and historic gallery. Turtle Gallery offers a selective collection of fine art, craft and sculpture by local and nationally known makers. The gallery currently resides in the Centennial House on Route 15, a beautiful 1876 home, barn, and garden property that was once the home of Francis and Priscilla
Merritt, founders of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. In 2022 the gallery celebrates and explores the concepts of “Home & Shelter,” whether it’s celebrating their 40th anniversary in a place as special as Deer Isle, the everyday objects we love, nature we seek to feel rooted, or the people we hold close. Turtle Gallery invited artists to share what the last years have revealed in the intensive study of their homes, islands, and bubbles. Through early October the gallery will feature groupings of work by gallery artists including Vaino and Marcia Kola, Chris Joyce,

BANGOR
The Zillman Art Museum, University of Maine, located in the middle of downtown Bangor, offers a diverse roster of exhibitions featuring nationally significant contemporary artists. As Maine’s only collecting institution focusing on the art of our time, Zillman Art Museum’s ten galleries showcase new exhibitions every four months. The summer season features art from Carly Glovinski, Robin Mandel, Matthew Cornall, Nick Sider, and Deborah Zlotsky. The exhibition Of a Feather: Works by Walter H. Rick, which was guest curated with the involvement of local high schoolers, is also on display
through the summer. The Museum’s permanent collection includes more than 4,000 works of art created primarily from 1920 to the present. In addition to this impressive collection of fine art, Zillman offers a fascinating range of events, workshops, education programs, and more. The Museum’s presence in downtown Bangor places it at the center of the city’s booming art scene. Admission is free in 2022.
WATERVILLE
Colby College Museum of Art is a teaching museum, a destination for American art, and a place for engagement with local, national, and global communities. The Museum is a highlight of the renowned Colby College. Founded in 1959, the Museum consists of five wings,
nearly 10,000 works of art, and more than 38,000 square feet of exhibition space. It inspires connections between art and people through distinctive, diverse exhibitions, programs, and publications and through an outstanding collection emphasizing American and contemporary art. From August 16, 2022–February 19, 2023, visitors can see Alex Katz: Theater and Dance, a comprehensive collection of painter Alex Katz’s collaborative work with theater and dance. Colby Museum endeavors to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and access across all of its work and engages with today’s most vital questions. This educational museum provides visitors with an expansive understanding of American art and allows its patrons to connect with art in new and innovative ways.
