Acknowledgments & Thanks

Welcome

to Cape Ann Plein Air 2023!

Our Plein Air competition is an unique opportunity for 38 nationally recognized Master Painters to paint for a week, vying for over $20,000 in awards. Our area has long been a destination for artists. We view this event as an opportunity for all of Greater Cape Ann—not only our artists, but our business and community leaders as well—to come together to raise awareness of our important art heritage. Most importantly, we celebrate these amazing artists from all over the world as they paint to compete for prestigious prizes and awards. And all the paintings they create will be for sale at the Gala!

We have tremendous support from the following sponsors, whose generosity and commitment to the arts made this year a reality: Master ($10K+) Glen T McLeod Cape Ann YMCA; Curator ($5K+) Applied Materials, Bazel General Contracting, Beauport Hospitality; Apprentice ($1K+) Cape Ann Savings Bank, BankGloucester, Leslie Ray Insurance, Building Center, Gloucester 400+ and M+T Bank. Our artist awards totaling more than $20K are made possible by the very generous donations from local businesses and our many patrons of the arts. Prize award money goes directly to the artists.

An important aspect of attracting competing and juried artists who travel from all over the United States is the tremendous support from Cape Ann residents who open their homes to the artists for the week, creating lifelong friendships and ensuring that our artists feel welcomed and comfortable. Many thanks!

Because of the strong collaboration between the arts, businesses including restaurants and shops, cultural groups and galleries and residents, all of Cape Ann deserves credit for making Cape Ann Plein Air Week 2023 possible. Thank you for your enthusiasm and participation on every level.

Plein air painting is alive and well in Greater Cape Ann and can be witnessed as you browse through the many art galleries in all five communities. We applaud the patrons of the arts! It’s because of you that the legacy lives on. Never stop investing in art!

Please visit CapeAnnPleinAir.org for news about the week, including a full calendar of events throughout the week.

Cape Ann Art Haven

Cape Ann Art Haven has been serving our community since 2008. Our goal at CAAH is to provide equitable access to the valuable resource of art education. In doing so, we invite students into a community that supports them as artists and individuals. Cape Ann Plein Air funding ensures Cape Ann Art Haven will be able to deliver on our mission to bring art education to all our youth.

Classes

• Provide after school and vacation programming for elementary and middle schoolers, as well as year-round evening classes for teens and adults.

• Our curriculum is process led, encouraging experimentation, play and individual expression while teaching fine art skills.

• Our teachers are artists who create alongside the students, inspiring and supporting them.

Community

• Fifty percent of our classes are delivered free to those in need.

• Mobile Art programs brings art classes out into the community. We collaborate with other nonprofits to bring art to people where they are, removing the barriers of cost and logistics.

• Art Haven is a member of the North Shore Risk Prevention network, which provides a range of positive growthoriented experiences for local teens.

Cape Ann Plein Air

• Plein air painting is about artists interpreting their surroundings. Similarly, Art Haven inspires young artists to express their interpretation of their world.

• We are thrilled to be collaborating with Cape Ann Plein Air and look forward to building bridges with events throughout the year for all generations of artists.

EVENTS JUDGE PROFILE

Patrick Lee

Patrick Lee takes a unique, creative approach to making paintings in the studio and en plein air. He draws heavily on intuition and imagination to develop an image, often altering the drawing, color and spatial relationships to create a mood and express a feeling about the subject. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. This gives the viewer an opportunity to connect with

each piece in their own way, inviting them to let their own imaginations make personal associations and connections.

Patrick is no stranger to Cape Ann, having participated and won awards at CAPA in past years. Additionally, he has participated in other nationally recognized plein air events across the country, winning awards in a multitude of categories. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

David Bareford

Gloucester, ma

“From the start, I had an affinity for watercolor. I knew I could master this medium and over time, with great effort, I did. However, the tactile quality of the oil medium and the paintings left by masters who came before made me want to try my hand at oil painting. And once I did I was hooked!

“I’ve received many awards, including the Yachting Award at the 34th annual Marine Art Exhibit at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT. I am a member of the Rockport Art Association, the Copley Society of Art in Boston, the American Watercolor Society and Allied Artists of America. Also, I am a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists, where I have served as Managing Fellow. My work is available at the Christina Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard; in New York City; Greenwich, CT; and Nantucket at Cavalier-Ebanks Galleries.”

Beth Bathe

Beth Bathe is an artist residing in Lancaster, PA. After a long career as a graphic designer, her partner gave Beth an easel and paints for Christmas, which then sat in the basement for a little over a year. She eventually dusted off the easel and decided to take an oil painting class. After her first session (she painted a pear), Beth was hooked and now pursues painting full time. Primarily painting in oil en plein air since 2013, she participates in high-profile competitions from Maine to Washington State, for a total of 10+ competitions a year. Her paintings have won numerous awards and honors, including a recent a Second Place Overall (March) and a Best Vehicle (August) in the monthly 2023 Plein Air Salon Competitions.

Beth’s painting style is unique, looking somewhat like a watercolor—or is it an oil painting? She uses water-mixable oil colors in thin washes with a limited tonalist palette, using unconventional tools such as squeegees and cotton swabs along with her brushes. Her representational paintings have been described by critics as evoking nostalgia, like that of an old sepia-toned photograph, often with just touches of color. She is highly influenced by painter Andrew Wyeth, and her subject matter is often what she refers to as the “vanishing landscape,” including finding beauty in buildings, barns and old towns of a time gone by. She teaches workshops at Short Dog Studio that she shares with her photographer partner and their two Cardigan Welsh corgis.

Asignature member of the American Impressionist Society and member of the Oil Painters of America, Bob Beck has also been featured in PleinAir Magazine. He has won Best of Show in the Raymar Art Competition and has won many awards in national and international art competitions. Bob has been accepted into Oil Painters of America National Juried competition in 2022 and 2023. Bob finds the best way to express himself is painting on location. That’s where all of his senses kick into his paintings. His painting titled Minus One Degree—juried into the 2022 Oil Painters of America competition and awarded the honor finalist in the March 2023 Bold Brush painting competition—is an example of how cold it was, and demonstrated in the brush strokes throughout the painting. The brush strokes have to be quick and precise. Painting in this manner is risky, but to Bob it is the purest of painting. Painting in the summer is quite a bit different than the winter. There is no wearing of mittens and bulky clothes, but the same concept applies. Get your drawing down accurately and paint fast because the light changes fast and you don’t want to be chasing it!

Bob has painted extensively throughout the United States in many plein air art competitions. He has also painted abroad, in one of his favorite countries, France. He painted in Paris and then spent seven days painting the Monet Gardens in Giverny. Most recently, he spent 14 days and nights painting in another favorite place, Venice, Italy. Bob was born in Pittsburg and grew up in Florida and Illinois and eventually settled in Wisconsin. He received a B.F.A. with a concentration in painting. He has been the owner of I’ve Been Framed custom framing and the Bob Beck Art Gallery in Manitowoc for the past 30 years. Bob lives in Two Rivers with his wife, Linda. They have four grown children, in addition to being parents to their very sassy black lab pup, Ellie.

Lon

Lon Brauer is an American artist of figure and plein air landscape. He paints every day. “They gave me crayons and paper early on and that opened the floodgates to creative mayhem. Then came paint and brush. Abstract painting is emotional; representational painting is all about story. The narrative may be about the paint application, or it may be about the subject conveyed. Or, at best, a combination of the two. That is where I find myself right now. Choose a subject, then hang paint on it! Figure, landscape, or still life…doesn’t matter. Just make it interesting and new! That’s the challenge. That’s my job.”

Lon has shown his work both nationally and overseas. He holds signature membership with Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, Outdoor Painters Society and American Society of Marine Artists. He travels extensively with top plein air events each season. When home, he is in studio painting and sculpting. He holds frequent workshops where he teaches drawing and painting through figurative themes. Lon Brauer Studios is in Granite City, IL. where Lon lives with his partner, quillwork artist Djuana Tucker.

Brienne M. Brown

Much to her mother’s indignation, Brienne owned little clothing that was not covered in paint. From a young age, Brienne showed talent in art and music, but wanted to pursue a career in the sciences. She started her education at the University of Utah as a double major (art and chemistry), eventually receiving a B.S. in chemistry and finishing with a master’s degree in 2004. After graduation, Brienne worked in a toxicology lab. Though she painted some by taking an occasional class, as the years wore on, she realized she wanted more art in her life than a career in science would allow. She was surprised and delighted to find great fulfillment in painting. In fact, it became a necessity.

After leaving her job as a toxicologist to raise her first child in 2008, Brienne had the opportunity to paint more consistently. Prioritizing painting and taking workshops from artists she admired paid off. Soon she was not only exhibiting and entering shows regularly, but also winning awards. Brienne holds signature membership status for the National Watercolor Society, American Impressionist Society and several other watercolor societies. Every year, she participates is several national juried and invitational plein air events, teaches workshops all over the country and holds online courses. Her work has been published in Splash 17 Best of Watercolor: Inspired Subjects, PleinAir Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine and Watercolor Artist Magazine.

Brienne’s passion is watercolor and plein air painting. “I especially enjoy painting en plein air, where each painting reminds me of where I was, of the experiences I had, the sounds, smells and the people I met. As I try and capture the essence of a scene, my paintings are always more about a moment in time than about a particular location. I enjoy sharing how I see the world.”

Thomas Bucci camden, me

Introducing CAPA 2023 artist Thomas Bucci, whose Lobster Trophies received the Best Americana Award for a subject depicting an aspect of American life, during CAPA 2022! “I’m a watercolorist living in coastal Maine. I have a degree in graphic design and a Masters of Architecture. After working as an architect, I moved to painting full-time, focusing on plein air work.

“Some selected awards include Jurors Award and Best Architecture Award at Olmsted Plein Air 2022, Best Architecture Award at PleinAir Easton 2021, Jurors Award at Olmsted Plein Air Invitational 2021, John N. Lewis Memorial Award at the Salmagundi Club’s Annual Members Show 2021, Edgar A. Whitney Memorial Award of Excellence at the Transparent Watercolor Society of America 2020 and many others. My work has been featured in PleinAir Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur and the Art Renewal Center publications.

“The joy of painting for me is working directly from life and on location, starting with small study sketches. I feel a painting is successful when I first envision the result, then make that happen. If a painting succeeds without a plan, I consider that to be luck.”

Henry Coe Parkton,

“Iearned an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I prefer to paint outside, in front of the subject matter, en plein air. While working as a teach and curator, I began painting seriously on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I was drawn to the flat land and big sky, which reminded me of the landscapes opf Dutch painter Jacob van Ruisdael.

“I did a seven-month residency in China and three residencies in France and made many other painting visits there. My work has been featured in American Artist Magazine and the book 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic. I did my first plein air event in 2016 and have done many similar events since then.

“While participating in Plein Air Easton 2022, my painting Hay Bales won the Life on the Farm Award. Recently, in May 2023, my painting Old Ridge Road won Best in Show at the Wayne Art Center Plein Air Festival in Wayne, PA. My work is represented by the C. Rhonda Ford

Rhonda is a native of Maryland, having grown up in Howard County, MD. She spent most of her time drawing, painting and exploring the woodlands around her rural home on foot or on horseback. Spending time outdoors was always top of the list. In high school, the art room was definitely her favorite class and space to spend any extra time between classes. After receiving the Wilhide Fine Arts Award at graduation, Rhonda went on to the University of Maryland at College Park to study studio arts as well as art history.

Rhonda moved to Easton, MD in 2017 and began taking classes and being mentored, diving into the art world full time. Easton and the surrounding areas on the Eastern Shore are the perfect environment for this renewed pursuit. The scenery has reinvigorated her childhood wonder of all that nature has to offer. She has also had the good fortune to enjoy the remote marshlands of the Eastern Shore in Virginia. The lighting and the weather changes in a salt marsh make for the most interesting subject matter. Easton has also sparked her desire to paint en plein air since the town hosts one of the most prestigious plein air events in the United States. It is hard to live there and not get bit by the plein air bug. She began applying to various events locally a couple of years ago to test out the waters. It quickly became obvious that she enjoyed the competitions and has received some accolades along the way.

Painting en plein air has definitely been a wonderful experience that Rhonda continues to enjoy. It has also become a way to see more areas of the U.S. at the same time doing what she loves to do the most.

Martin Geiger staunton,

Martin Geiger was born in January 1997 in Charlottesville, VA. He received an undergraduate certificate at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and has been living in Staunton, VA since graduation. As the son of two oil painters, oil paint was always the artist’s preferred medium, although drawing has become an indispensable companion as well.

To Geiger, the world itself seems almost like an immense playground of a kind. Everything in his surroundings feels and looks intensely interesting at all times. It seems always to be right on the cusp of revealing itself, somewhat like a piece of music leading up to a crescendo. It’s clear that there is something very important just beneath the surface for the artist and making art is his best attempt at excavating these ever-present patterns and showing them to the world. This nonstop sense of being called by reality means that the subject of his works vary widely from figure compositions to complex architecture to landscape, but the work itself generally gravitates towards light, space and design. These formal adjectives seem to most closely correlate with what Geiger wishes to communicate about the playground of life.

He has also participated in numerous painting events and exhibitions throughout Quebec and the United States.

In 2010, he left the Mauricie region for the Saguenay. The exceptional beauty of the landscape and the unique environment of the fjord motivated this decision and triggered a return to his first passion—painting. The Nordic landscape has always been a source of inspiration. His work is characterized by beautiful atmospheric qualities, and expressionistic casual brushstrokes with rich colors. His palette, sometimes subtle, moves towards a fauvism approach and adjusts to suit the ambiences he wants to create. “I firmly believe that figurative art, especially the landscape, remains very current if it transcends the narrative, and in a way becomes a basis for experimenting with gestures, color and light.”

Marc Grandbois is member of the Institute of Figurative Art. His works are found in fine galleries across Canada and several collections in Canada, U.S. and abroad.

In a recent article for 518 Profiles Magazine, the author wrote about Ann Larsen: “When the journey to becoming who you are zigs and zags but eventually gets you to your rightful place, which is at an easel with a canvas and brush waiting for you, it’s a good thing.” Larsen further states that, “As far as a profession, I’ve probably been doing this for 35 years and anyone who is an artist will tell you it takes 35 years to get to that point where you say, ok, this is working.”

As a plein air landscape painter, Ann thinks the landscape process is more about what you don’t say than what you do say. Using bold brush strokes and textural paint, she interprets in an impressionistic manner what nature provides. Larsen states that “working from nature is both exciting and challenging, but ultimately there is a dichotomy between painting and creating a work of art that hopefully collectors respond to.”

Among the many awards Larsen has received are the Dickenson Signature Member Award at the 2021 American Impressionist Society National; Best Landscape, American Women Artists National; two Awards of Excellence, Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional; Master Signature Silver Medal, American Women Artists National; and an Award of Excellence at the Paso Robles California Plein Air Invitational.

“My fascination with art, with painting, is a fascination with brain science and the power and plasticity of the brain. I focus on the link between the eye and the brain. The brain assimilates volumes of visual information in every moment and can translates it into a feeling or an experience within seconds. For me, painting is this process in slow motion. The challenge is not to lose this glimpse, this feeling, this experience, in the translation. The challenge is to provide just enough information to capture that moment. I paint with this delightful, ceaseless challenge all around me. Art is a privilege. It thrills and crushes me every day. For many years I understood the pursuit— knew where I wanted to go. Now it mystifies me. This state of mystery is where I want to be, where I want to stay. It is uncomfortable, it is challenging and it is endlessly stimulating.”

There is no prescription, but rather an attempt to capture the essence of the scene, identifying the character and movement of the moment seen knowing that time will change it all within moments.
