uch like a great summer vacation, residencies provide artists with a departure from the quotidian, the opportunity to reflect and reimagine their work – and a healthy dose of playtime. For artists participating in a residency removed from their home state, a new locale can inspire and enrich creative output. There are residencies for artists of every age and at every stage of career. Some offer the chance to work with new materials, or new subjects. Some entice with the promise of solitude, others with the excited glow of collaboration and like-minded community. No two are alike. And while there are residencies that focus on output, suited to those bursting with ideas, don’t underestimate those that advocate for la dolce far niente, or the sweetness of doing nothing, when attempting to cajole creativity out of its winter den. For those without the freedom or inclination

Whether one dreams of escaping to the sea, to the woods, or to the Alaskan wilds, of painting, sculpting, or sewing, the following compilation of residencies and workshops is sure to pique one’s interest.
