ANDALUSIA The Jewel of Spain

Sunday, March 30–Monday, April 7, 2014

“T

he popular image of Spain as a land of bullfights, flamenco, sherry and ruined castles derives from Andalusía, the most quintessentially Spanish part of the Iberian Peninsula.”—Rough Guides Andalusia’s culture, cuisine and traditions are a blending of ancient Roman, Moorish and Catholic influence. Rich in beauty, history and unique customs, Andalusia gave birth to the myths of Don Juan and Carmen, the magic of Flamenco and the spectacle of the bullfight. It’s here where we’ll find some of the country’s most celebrated wonders: the exquisite 1,200-year-old Mezquita in Cordoba, the stunning Alhambra Palace in Granada and the Catholic cathedral in Seville—the largest gothic structure in the world. Elegant, stylish and sophisticated, Seville is the heart of Andalusian culture. And, don’t miss the tapas bars—Seville is credited with the invention and has more than a thousand! Cordoba stands as testament to three great cultures where Jews, Muslims and Christians lived peacefully together and is home to one of the world’s architectural wonders—La Mezquita (Great Mosque)—whose interior is a great forest of red and white striped arches and houses a Christian cathedral. Discover narrow twisting alleys, small squares and courtyards, extravagant and picturesque patio gardens. In the vibrant city of Granada you’ll find a rich blend of Spanish culture and Arab legacy enhanced by a cosmopolitan atmosphere of open-air cafes, beautiful gardens and charming streets filled with flowers. Known as The Moorish Jewel, the entire city has been declared a national monument and the most outstanding site is the great Arabian palace, the magnificent Alhambra, one of the most visited attractions in the world. Breathtaking Ronda sits on the edge of a massive ravine and is split in two by this 130-meter-deep gorge. The last Moorish city to fall to the Catholic monarchs, Ronda’s highlights include the 11th-century Arab baths and the only bullring in Spain which is entirely made of stone.
