Todas las traineras eran movidas a remo y junto a ellas participó una góndola, dibujada por el joven laredano Gonzalo Bringas Vega, arquitecto y, que fue patrocinada por el también laredano e indiano Nicasio Escalante. Fue esta góndola, que desfiló con el nombre de “La Argentina” la ganadora de la primera “Batalla de Flores de Laredo”. Debido al éxito obtenido y con el fin de hacer una fiesta más participativa, los organizadores tomaron la decisión, al año siguiente, de realizarla por tierra, tradición que se ha mantenido hasta hoy. Sólo hubo un año que no se celebró la Batalla de Flores, 1936.

La Batalla De Flores De Laredo The Laredo Battle Of Flowers En 1908 nace esta Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, que se celebra el último viernes de agosto. Los carrocistas, hombres y mujeres de Laredo, muestran sus alegorías engalanadas de flora natural. Desde primeras horas del día las calles de Laredo se inundan de música y el colorido de charangas, peñas y grupos. A partir de las 17.30 h. el Circuito de la Alameda Miramar acoge a miles de personas para presenciar el desfile de las carrozas adornadas en su totalidad con flor natural. Un jurado puntúa aspectos artísticos para otorgar unos premios siempre muy competitivos. HISTORIA La Batalla de Flores de Laredo está declarada Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. Su nacimiento se remonta a 1908 y surge con la intención de ser un festejo eminentemente popular. A pesar de que ahora su recorrido se hace por tierra, la fiesta comenzó en el Abra de Laredo, es decir, en el mar, ya que la mayoría de los vecinos de la villa eran marineros. En esta primera “batalla” participaron 25 traineras del Cabildo de Pescadores de San Martín de Laredo, adornadas con latas y otros elementos decorativos que salieron a la mar fuera de la dársena del muelle de 1884.

This festivity, declared National Attraction Festivity, began in 1908 and is held on the last Friday in August. The float creators, men and women from Laredo, parade their allegories decorated with fresh flowers. Starting early in the morning the streets of Laredo are flooded with music and the colour of the various musical groups of charangas and peñas. From 5.30 pm the Alameda Miramar Circuit hosts thousands of people to watch the parade of floats that are decorated entirely with fresh flowers and petals. A jury evaluates the artistic features and then awards the prizes, which are always fiercely competitive.

El recorrido ha variado en distintas ocasiones: hasta 1970 el escenario fue el Paseo de Menéndez Pelayo; en la Avenida José Antonio (hoy Avda. de España) entre los años 1971 y 1977 y, a partir de entonces en el actual Circuito de la Alameda de Miramar. All of the boats were powered by oars and along with them there was a gondola, designed by the young Laredo native Gonzalo Bringas Vega, architect, and sponsored by the also Laredo native who had made good in America, Nicasio Escalante. This gondola was the winner of the first “Laredo Battle of Flowers”, participating under the name “La Argentina”.

The Laredo Battle of Flowers has been declared a National Tourism Attraction Festivity. It dates back to 1908 and its aim was mainly to be a popular celebration.

Thanks to the overwhelming success of the event and in order to allow for more participation, the organisers decided to transfer it to land the next year, a tradition which has been held to the present day. There was only one year when the Battle of Flowers was not held, and this was in 1936.

Although the parade now runs through the streets, the festivity started out at the Abra de Laredo, in other words, in the sea, because most of the village inhabitants were seafaring. During this first “battle” 25 small boats from the Fishermen’s Guild of San Martin de Laredo took part, decorated with cans and other decorative elements, and took to sea outside the pier of 1884.

The itinerary has changed several times: until 1970 it was held on the Paseo de Menendez Pelayo; on the Avenida Jose Antonio (today Avenida de España) between 1971 and 1977 and, since then, on its current Alameda de Miramar Circuit.

La víspera de la Batalla de Flores es una noche especial, miles de amantes de nuestra fiesta, tanto pejinos como foráneos, se lanzan a la calle para visitar “los talleres” donde se construyen las carrozas y curiosear cómo se colocan las miles de flores y pétalos que lleva cada obra de auténtico arte que es la carroza.

LA FLOR NATURAL La flor natural es el elemento indispensable de la fiesta, hasta el extremo de haber dado nombre a la misma. En sus inicios, las carrozas aparecían adornadas con crisantemos, rosas y hortensias, que se cogían en los chalets de la gente acaudalada que veraneaba en la villa – famosa colonia madrileña- y que se acompañaban de magnolia. Aunque en esta primera época ya aparece el pétalo decorando las carrozas, es a partir de los años 50 cuando se generaliza su uso en la decoración de las figuras.

Su confección corre a cargo de los carrocistas que son quienes diseñan, cultivan y confeccionan la carroza que tendrá una temática, una alegoría.

La carroza se complementa el día del desfile con grupos de niñas/os que van ataviados con vestimentas relativas a la temática de la alegoría.

On the day of the parade the float is also decked out with groups of children who are dressed according to the theme of the allegory.

Las carrozas deben cumplir las siguientes medidas: Largo: 6 metros mínimo y 8,50 metros máximo. Ancho: 3,5 metros mínimo y 5 metros máximo. Alto: 5 metros mínimo y 7 metros máximo. Los motivos de las carrozas sólo son flores naturales, estando prohibido materiales como papel, plásticos, etc. Se permite la utilización de hojas como base para la colocación de las flores. Todas las carrozas están cubiertas de flor, al menos en el 75% de su superficie siendo recomendable un mínimo del 90%.

The float decorations are only fresh flowers, and it is forbidden to use materials such as paper, plastic, etc. It is allowed to use leaves as the base for the flowers. At least 75% of all the floats’ surface is covered in flowers, while it is recommended to have a minimum coverage of 90%.

FASE CONCURSO La evolución de la Batalla de Flores de Laredo a lo largo de sus más de cien años de existencia ha sido importante en todos los aspectos, pero, particularmente, en lo relativo a la creatividad y complejidad artística de las carrozas. El desfile consiste en la realización por las carrozas de tres vueltas al circuito. Los miembros del jurado entregarán sus puntuaciones una vez finalizada la primera vuelta. Durante la segunda vuelta se realizará el recuento de votos, para, al inicio de la tercera, proceder a la entrega de premios, según el orden de paso de las carrozas por la tribuna presidencial. Se puntuará conjuntamente por cada jurado desde el 2 creciente modo par, a su mejor criterio, y sin repetir puntos, siendo 2 la puntuación más baja e irá creciendo hasta el número de carrozas que se presenten ese año. El resultado final de la clasificación, se establecerá mediante la suma de los puntos obtenidos por cada carroza en total de los votos del jurado, si bien antes de establecer la puntuación final de cada carroza se anulará la más alta y la más baja puntuación obtenida. ENTRE OTROS ASPECTOS SE VALORAN: RESENTACIÓN Se valorará el tamaño de la carroza, tanto por sus medidas (largo, ancho y alto) así como por su volumen y complejidad del montaje. Existen dos categorías según las medidas de la alegoría: Categoría A (Carrozas Grandes) y Categoría B ( Carrozas Pequeñas). Categoría A : Largo: 6 metros mínimo y 8.50 máximo; Ancho: 3.50 metros mínimo y 5 metros máximo. Alto: 5 metros mínimo y 7 metros máximo. Categoría B: Largo: 6 metros mínimo y 7,50 metros máximo. Ancho: 3.50 metros mínimo y 4.50 metros máximo; Alto: 5 metros mínimo y 7 metros máximo. FLOR NATURAL Se valora la perfección a la hora de poner tanto la flor como la ejecución y colocación del pétalo, el colorido de la carroza y la cantidad de flor natural. “CLAVAR FLOR” Se dice de la colocación de las flores naturales en las

Descripción: 75 millones de búfalos llegaron a cubrir el continente norteamericano antes de la llegada del hombre blanco. Para las tribus el Tatanka (búfalo en idioma Lakota) no solo era una forma de vida, también formaba parte de sus creencias y mitos. Un pueblo conectado espiritualmente a un animal, el cual le otorgaba su fuerza y fiereza en el combate. Para los grandes jefes, además de símbolo de honor, el búfalo también significaba reverencia y aprecio especial por todas las cosas que la Tierra ofrece a sus hijos.

The sky is blue everywhere I look and I absentmindedly run my hand over the delicately coloured petals. I choose a flower of each variety and I make a bouquet tied together by the band that held my hair back. Suddenly everything turns dark, my dream has turned into a nightmare. I run among wilted flowers. I don’t want to look, Freddy is very close, I feel his fatal breath on my neck and it no longer makes sense to keep running away. This is my dream! I shout throwing the bouquet to the wind. The flowers fall to the ground and where previously there was only desolation, thousands of small flowers emerge, covering the cracked soil. I turn around and you are beside me, smiling. Today, we have won the battle.

Descripción: La composición artística que representamos refleja la legendaria figura de la mujer corsaria, un símbolo de fuerza y libertad que se enfrenta a los peligros del mar con determinación y valentía. La pieza central da forma a una mujer fiera, aguerrida y sin miedos, que al mismo tiempo se encuentra rodeada de un marco bello y colorido. Este contraste pretende hacer un distinguido homenaje a las mujeres que, a lo largo de la historia, han aportado tanto al desarrollo de nuestra sociedad sin recibir, en muchas ocasiones, el reconocimiento que merecen. Nando Agüeros Carrocista Mayor 2017 Nando Agüeros Guest of Honour 2017 pronto comenzará a esbozar sus primeras letras y a aprender sus primeros acordes. Las canciones de la primera etapa hablaban de su entorno y de su tierra para más tarde desembocar en un autor polifacético y con una pronunciada personalidad artística. En 1997 se integra en el “Coro Ronda Gracilaso”, de Torrelavega. En 1998 forma parte del conjunto vocal “Voces Peñasagra” grabando dos discos con esta formación “Soy un Montañés” (2001) y “Tierras del Norte” (2003). En ese mismo año Nando Agüeros edita un disco en solitario titulado “Verde Marino”, donde ya marca un estilo propio con doce temas inéditos compuestos por él y con ritmos muy diversos logrando un trabajo muy ecléctico.

Tras la disolución del grupo “Voces Peñasagra” (1998-2004) los hermanos Sergio y Nando crean el grupo “Tanea” (2005) con la idea de dar otro color a la música hecha en Cantabria, creando un estilo propio. Con esa idea nace el primer disco de Sergio y Nando titulado “Aquel niño que yo fui” marcando un antes y un después en su trayectoria. Este CD ya supera las 15.000 copias vendidas. En ese mismo año 2005 viajan a México y en el 2007 repiten visitando además Los Ángeles y San Francisco (California) para efectuar diversas actuaciones. En 2009 publican el disco “Los que perdieron el Norte” bajo el nombre de “Tanea”.

En 2012 editan el disco “Acuérdate”, con canciones más íntimas y menos recargadas de arreglos musicales. En este último trabajo cabe resaltar la colaboración de artistas de la talla de Víctor Manuel San José y David Bustamante interpretando los temas “Viento del Norte” y “La Santina” respectivamente. Este mismo año, los hermanos Sergio y Nando Agüeros son los encargados de escribir y leer el pregón de las fiestas de su ciudad, Torrelavega, desde el balcón del ayuntamiento. A partir de 2012 Nando Agüeros comienza una carrera en solitario debido a la retirada forzosa por un problema vocal de su hermano Sergio. 2013 es el año en el que Nando edita un EP llamado “Torrelavega”, por encargo del ayuntamiento de la ciudad. En 2014 Nando Agüeros vuelve a México para realizar una gira visitando las casas regionales de Cantabria, Asturias y Galicia y es entrevistado para la cadena Univisión desde Los Ángeles (California) en directo para todos los Estados Unidos. A su regreso de la gira colabora en un disco de canción mejicana interpretando dos temas “Fallaste corazón” y “No volveré”. El disco “Tradicional” sale a la luz en 2015 donde se recogen doce canciones extraídas del cancionero popular adaptándolas con arreglos actuales. Además, Nando Agüeros realiza una gira por Chile y Argentina actuando en los estadios de Viña del Mar, Santiago de Chile, Temuco y en el Centro Montañés de Buenos Aires.

También es galardonado por la Asociación de Turismo Rural de Cantabria otorgándole un premio por su difusión de Cantabria dentro y fuera de sus fronteras regionales.

NANDO AGÜEROS, CANTABRIAN SINGER AND COMPOSER, “CARROCISTA MAYOR” (GUEST OF HONOUR) OF THE 108th EDITION OF THE LAREDO BATTLE OF FLOWERS 2017

Nando Agüeros, Cantabrian singer and composer, will be the “Carrocista Mayor” (guest of honour) of the 108th Edition of the Laredo Battle of Flowers 2017, and has been declared National Tourism Interest Festivity and Local Interest Intangible Ethnographic Heritage. Born in Torrelavega, Nando Agüeros began writing his first songs and learning his first notes at an early age. In the early stages his songs spoke of his surroundings and of his home, leading to him becoming a multitalented author with a marked artistic personality. In 1997 he joined the “Coro Ronda Garcilaso”, in Torrelavega. In 1998

After the “Voces Peñasagra” group broke up (1998-2004) the brothers Sergio and Nando formed the group “Tanea” (2005) with the aim to contribute to the music made in Cantabria, creating their own style. This was the idea behind Sergio and Nando’s first record, called “Aquel niño que yo fui”, which was a turning point in their career. This CD has already sold over 15,000 copies. That same year they travelled to Mexico and in 2007 they returned and also visited Los Angeles and San Francisco (California) to perform. In 2009 they launched the record “Los que perdieron el Norte” under their group name “Tanea”. In 2012 they launched “Acuérdate”, a record containing more intimate songs, with less instrumental arrangements. This record also contains collaborations by artists such as Victor Manuel San José and David Bustamante, singing “Viento del Norte” and “La Santina” respectively. That same year the brothers Sergio and Nando Agüeros were chosen to write and read the proclamation for the festivities of their town, Torrelavega, from the Town Hall balcony.

In 2014 Nando Agüeros returned to Mexico on a tour, visiting the regional representation centres of Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia and he was interviewed live for the Univision television station in Los Angeles (California) for the entire United States. When he returned from the tour he collaborated on a Mexican music record, with the songs “Fallaste corazón” and “No volveré”. His record “Tradicional” came out in 2015, containing twelve traditionally popular songs and adapting them with current technology. Nando Agüeros also toured Chile and Argentina, performing at the Viña del Mar, Santiago de Chile and Temuco stadiums, and at the Centro Montañés in Buenos Aires. The Association for Rural Tourism of Cantabria gave him an award for his participation in promoting Cantabria both within the region and outside of it. His ninth record, “Todo gira”, came out in 2016 and he again surprised his fans with a fresh and varied record, establishing him as a very talented author and composer. That same year Nando performed for the Asturian Centre of Miami, Centro Montañés in Ciudad de Mexico and the Casa de Cantabria in the La Avellaneda Theatre in Camagüey (Cuba). In 2017 Nando Agüeros received the 2017 National “Tino Casal” Award for the song “Viento del Norte”, possibly his bestknown musical composition.

After 2012 Nando Agüeros began his career on his own, as his brother Sergio had to retire because of a voice problem. In 2013 Nando made an EP called “Torrelavega”, commissioned by the Town Hall.

Recreation of their arrival in Laredo. Afterwards there is a spectacular Knight’s Joust. All weekend, from Thursday, 21st to Sunday the 24th, Laredo again becomes the village that Carlos V and his sisters once knew, to relive one of the most brilliant times of its history: parades, renaissance market, jousts, handcraft workshops, falconry exhibitions, street-theatre, firework shows, children’s competition – parade, entertainment and festive activities. Festivities where everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, participates and enjoys a celebration that belongs to everyone.
