TECH EARNS HIGHEST COLLEGE BOARD HONOR

For the third straight year, Bosco Tech has earned a spot on the College Board’s AP Honor Roll. The Tech garnered a platinum-level ranking--the highest possible--based on a combination of participation, scores, and widespread opportunities for students.

Launched in 2023, the AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools doing outstanding work to welcome students into Advanced Placement courses and to support them on the path to college success. Bosco Tech has earned a spot each year for exemplary performance.

HONORING

A TECH B’BALL ICON

CELEBRATING TECH LEGEND

What a great evening--Tech legend, twotime All American, and retired NBA player Wayne Engelstad (PH ‘85) was honored during the Tiger varsity basketball game against Verbum Dei on Jan. 14.

A permanent banner hanging over the court was unveiled before the cheering crowd of friends, fans and former teammates.

Wayne was a vital part of the Tech’s champion b’ball team, helping the 1984 Division I Techmen shoot to #12 in the nation with his skill while averaging 25.3 points per game. Congratulations, #44, Wayne Engelstad!

STUDENTS DEMO PROSTHETIC LIMB

IMPACT LAB TEAMS CREATE/PRESENT INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS

Bosco Tech’s Impact Lab Demo Day was truly impressive! Student teams presented original inventions and showcased their work and prototypes through a professional, startup-style format.

Student Team 1 showcased a golf bag dolly focused on lowering cost and improving accessibility for everyday golfers. Using CAD-driven design and iteration, the team explored how thoughtful engineering can simplify existing solutions while maintaining performance. Team 2, made up of track athletes, presented a lightweight spike cover designed to improve safety and mobility by allowing runners to walk on hard surfaces without removing their spikes. The design features a unique honeycomb structure, developed through iteration and testing to balance grip, durability, and ease of use, showing how athlete-driven engineering can lead to practical, real-world solutions.

A functional prosthetic hand was unveiled last. “The Impact Lab’s first project focuses on the design and 3D printing of functional prosthetic hands for individuals with partial hand amputations,” explained Impact Lab President Aditya Kumar. “Through prototyping and testing, the team has explored how accessible manufacturing can support real-world functionality and impact.”

Built by students. Driven by purpose. This is only the beginning. –Bosco Tech Impact Lab

JANUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Each month, Bosco Tech announces the winners of the Student of the Month award that recognizes success in the classroom and celebrates the outstanding characteristics of our students as citizens of the school community. These individuals were voted on by their teachers to receive the Student of the Month award for January:

Grade 9: Kieran Vecchione--This young man is an all-around great student who consistently puts in strong effort, remains attentive during class, and asks meaningful, on-topic questions that show genuine understanding. He is always on time with his work and a participant in all classroom discussions. This freshman stands out for his strong commitment to learning.

Grade 10: Abraham Jette-Kouri--This sophomore’s positive energy and positive attitude transmits to his fellow classmates and helps create a good learning environment and vibes. He arrives to class early, ready to learn, and delivers consistently high-quality work. He regularly goes above and beyond.

Grade 11: Yuchen Dubois--This junior is the highest achieving student in AP Statistics and he has started to apply advanced statistical techniques to a major technology project. But he also impresses with the variety of his interests. He and a teacher came across a collection of old newspapers with events from near the end of the Cold War, which he took great interest in and ended up taking them home. His teacher remarked; It’s pretty rare to find a math AND history buff in the same guy.

Grade 12: Andrew Phaneuf--This young man is not only an exceptional student, but is also dedicated to the larger community outside of Bosco Tech. He consistently performs at a high level, showing a deep understanding of the material. His dedication and charisma are contagious and have inspired his peers, and even his teachers, to increase our own efforts. He as always 100% engaged in the lesson and he shows a level of compassion and critical thinking that distinguishes him. A lot of people say that a student who gets this award “represents what Bosco is all about.” In this case, this senior is the one we look forward to teaching every day, no matter what class or band. He comes to class curious and ready to work. He makes no judgments, and lives the spirit of St. John Bosco in all he does.

Congratulations, gentlemen! We’re very proud of these young men and their positive approach to both their studies and their contributions to the school community! Well done!

ON-CAMPUS SAT EXAM IS MARCH 20

CONVENIENT OPPORTUNITY FOR TECH JUNIORS

Bosco Tech is again offering a convenient opportunity for juniors to take the SAT this Spring. They can sign up to take the exam on campus during a school day, Friday, March 20 (https:// gofan.co/event/5931964?schoolId=CA18801)

The test will be administered online and students can use their own devices; please review the College Board rules regarding what is allowed. Students can indicate on the sign-up form they would like to borrow a laptop from the Tech to test.

Although 80% of colleges and universities (like the UC’s and CSU’s) do not require test scores, many elite colleges have decided to again require them. (Some examples include Caltech, MIT, Purdue, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth, Brown, UT Austin, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin.)

Bosco Tech’s counseling department encourages our juniors to take at least one standardized test--either an SAT or ACT-and in providing our students with a Spring SAT School Day, we hope to make the process easier on students and parents. We will also offer an SAT School Day for seniors in October 2026

The exam registration cost is $64 and If you believe you may qualify for a fee waiver, please email Ms. Christi Gambill at cgambill@boscotech.edu.

SENIOR COLLEGE SWEATSHIRT PHOTO

REPRESENT: WEAR YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR CLASS PHOTO

Senior parents, Friday, May 22, is College/Career Shirt Day and Senior Student Life Awards. It’s still early, but once your son has made his plans for fall, please make sure he has a hoodie, sweatshirt, t-shirt or pennant representing those plans. The group photo will be taken at 1 p.m., just right before the Senior Student Life awards ceremony that begins at 2 p.m. Family members are welcome to celebrate our seniors who are active in on-campus clubs and service organizations!

Please remind your graduate to wear a shirt with his chosen college/ university/trade school /career on it!

SJB FEAST DAY CELEBRATION

Chess, giant Jenga, paper airplane contests were just a few of the creative and fun festivities students enjoyed on the Feast of St. John Bosco, celebrated on Jan. 30 this year.

Always an opportunity for our school community to celebrate the life and legacy of the Father and Teacher of Youth, the celebration embodied the teachings of Don Bosco who believed that young people grew best in environments rooted in joy, trust, and authentic relationships. In that spirit, the day is intentionally designed around fun, food, and fellowship; activities are structured to allow for a free-flowing, inclusive experience where participation and connection matter more than winning.

TEAM MAKES FAMILIES’ SPIRITS BRIGHT

MOST SUCCESSFUL FARMWORKERS GIFT DRIVE TO DATE

Inspired by the ministry of St. John Bosco, Tech football players made the holidays brighter for farmworker families in Central California. In partnership with the annual efforts of San Gabriel Mission, teammembers, led by junior Dylan Velazquez, coordinated the most successful campus-wide gift drive to date. Much-appreciated donations included essential toiletries, warm blankets, winter scarves, beanies, gloves, work gloves, winter jackets, and toys for children. These items were personally distributed by teammembers to two family camps and one men’s camp.

Special thanks to Dylan, Head Coach Adam Uballez, the football booster parents, and everyone who donated. From left to right, the football players in the top right photo are: Joaquin Foster, Sean Resendez, Nathan Pacheco, Quinn Anguiano, Gavin Cornejo, Javier Pacheco, C.J. Davison, Elijah Ambrose, Dylan Velazquez, Gerardo Rodriguez, Matthew Martinez and Nathaniel Rodriguez. Great job, Tigers!

SCORING IN CALTECH MATH MEET

Congratulations to Tech junior Andy Cao (BMET ’27) who participated in the recent Caltech Math Meet. As a solo participant, Andy competed against math whiz teams from all over the world and ranked an impressive seventh out of 40 teams.

“I had a great time meeting students from all around the world,” Andy said. “I’m not the biggest math person, but it was fun to step into new fields and use what I’ve learned from my courses. It made me seriously consider pursing mathematics and physics!”

“I also got to network and learn about interdisciplinary fields that align with my own interest in my technology, BMET!”

Great job, Andy!

REMINDER: MORNING DROP-OFF SAFETY

Please remember that the Administration Parking Lot, closest to San Gabriel Blvd., is not for dropping off students in the morning. The reason barricades are positioned across the entrances to this lot is to protect our students when they cross it after being dropped off either at the bus stop, along San Gabriel Blvd., or in the North Lot.

Please treat all of our young people like they are your child and keep this lot only for students to cross before and after school. Do not drive around the posted barricades or attempt to enter through the exit ramp facing Delta St.

Student safety is our highest priority at Bosco Tech and we count on all of our families and friends to support us towards that goal.

ALUMNI, WE’RE HEADED YOUR WAY
