The Gear--October 2024

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Tech families--

While it seems like the school year just began in many ways, the evidence says otherwise, with so many things having already happened on campus. To fill you in on a few recent and upcoming events:

• Alumni regional gatherings--This academic year, we’ll visit 17 cities across the country to meet up with alumni in those areas. This outreach, arranged by Mr. Phil Consuegra, Tech Vice President of Development and Strategic Initiatives, has grown immensely popular in the four years since we began. It provides a great opportunity to check in with Techmen and introduce them to other alums in their area, while letting us share the great things being accomplished on campus these days.

• Leadership donor dinner--Last week, we gathered top supporters of the school to thank them for their continued generosity and to update them on progress toward the planned academic center that will house extensive classroom and collaborative learning areas.

• New Admissions video --As you’ll read about in this issue of The Gear, a talented alumnus has helped us create a dynamic new school video that captures the vibrant essence of today’s Tech. Please read more about it on page 8 and watch the video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qlu0vcfN2kY

• College preparation--In addition to our annual campus College Fair on Thurs., Oct. 10 (which is mandatory for all Tech students), our dynamic Counseling Department is showcasing universities from across the country during lunchtime information sessions. So far, 13 school representatives have hosted Q&As with students and 15 more are on the calendar for coming weeks. Ask your son his thoughts, if he’s attended any of the sessions.

• Reunion weekend--The annual roundup will bring alumni of all graduating years back to campus. Kicking off with an all-alumni mixer and cocktail party on Friday, Oct. 18, the festive weekend will feature a special luncheon for our first grades, the class of 1959 on Saturday, Oct. 19, and milestone anniversary celebrations for seven classes on Saturday night. Please pass along the word to Techmen in your life and encourage them to visit boscotech.edu/reunion2024. It promises to be a fun weekend!

• State of the School--At this time each year, we gather parents for a summary of the year’s goals and objectives. Please join me on Tuesday, Oct. 22, for an overview of plans for the coming months and into the future, and steps being taken to reach those goals. I invite you to be there and stay up to date with us.

As we move toward the Thanksgiving season, please know that I am always grateful for our school community that is so involved and committed to Tech excellence!

Co-President Evan Cheung (MSET ’25)

I am involved in Core Team because doing ministry and living out the Oratory is my passion; to be able to grow spiritually and deeply with my brothers and the community at the Tech gives me purpose. I only hope to reciprocate the love and joy I gain from being in Core Team to my community and brothers. I want to accentuate the Salesian culture at Bosco and lead my brothers in communitybased projects that can hopefully bring the Oratory to those who need it. Core Team is a foundation of Bosco Tech and, because of that, Core Team vitally requires a diverse and experienced student team. I hope to leave behind a legacy in Core Team and I encourage any student, of any faith and background, to join Youth Ministry and experience what Bosco Tech is all about.

Co-President Josh Camarillo (BMET ’25)

I’m involved in Core Team because I want to help others grow in their faith, spirituality, and personal development. This year, I hope we can get a lot more people involved in the club, especially as we want to do more outreach. We want to go out into the neighborhood around Bosco and help with whatever we can. One example would be leading a class for the elderly on how to use technology. We want to not only improve our school, but the neighborhood around us as well. I encourage anyone, no matter what religion, to join core team as it helps build leadership and team-working skills. It’s also awesome to know you’re helping your school and community come closer to God and mature spiritually through our Masses, character assemblies, prayer services, and retreats.

Chaplain Adam Velasquez (ACE ’25)

I’m part of the Core Team to help spread God’s message of love across Bosco Tech, serving as a leader who strives to inspire and guide younger students by example. I hope our team accomplishes

both influencing other younger classes to join and help showing even the nonreligious people who we stand for. I think it’s important that the Tech has a vibrant Core Team of students because we represent St. John Bosco along with us also setting up all the Catholic services such as reconciliation and Masses. I would encourage younger students to get involved in Core Team because we can show them at a young age how a responsibility of such can be very important to the Catholic atmosphere of the school.

Senior Advisor Roman Valdepeña (BMET ’25)

I chose to join the Core Team because I believe in the power of community and teamwork. Being part of this team allows me to not only contribute to important school events, but also to develop my own leadership and problem-solving skills. I enjoy working behind the scenes, knowing that my efforts help bring everything together, from retreats to large school events. It’s rewarding to see my work positively impact both my peers and the overall school experience. This year, I hope our team can create events that bring the school together and build a stronger sense of unity. Whether it’s through successful retreats, well-organized spirit days, or other activities, I want us to create memorable moments that students will carry with them. Additionally, I hope we can find new ways to improve how we handle our roles, whether that’s upgrading our processes or finding new ways to engage our fellow students. A vibrant Core Team is essential because it allows students to take ownership of their school experience. When students are actively involved in organizing and running events, it makes those events more meaningful and tailored to our community. Also, being part of the Core Team teaches important life skills like leadership, collaboration, and responsibility. It’s not just about ensuring things run smoothly; it’s about setting the tone for how connected we feel as a school. By having students in these roles, we maintain a strong sense of school spirit and ensure that each event reflects us as a student body. I would encourage younger students to join the Core Team because it’s an opportunity to make a real difference. You don’t just get to attend events; you get to help shape them. Being involved gives you a voice in how things are run and opens doors to new friendships and experiences. It’s also a chance to develop valuable skills that will help in the future, like communication, leadership, and event planning.

Senior Advisor Juan (J.J.) Casillas (MAT ’25)

I first got involved with the Youth Ministry my sophomore year during the freshman retreat. I’ve always tried to engage with my community and meet

new people. Not only do I want to try and help everybody, but helping others helps me! I joined because Youth Ministry is easily the best way to do that! This year, I deeply hope me and my team can make every member of our school feel the oratory in every event we plan! We’re shooting for a 100% success rate regarding making an impact. It is vital to our organization, and our school, to have a diverse and creative group of students in Core Team. Everything to do with student activity in Youth Ministry trickles down from us. If you are a younger student, I highly encourage you to join Youth Ministry as soon as possible! Give yourself the opportunity to make new friends, reach out to other students, and generally impact every student daily. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be one of the Core Team members too, writing a similar paragraph.

Liturgy Committee Head Ethan De La Cruz (MSET ’26)

I joined to help out the school when it comes to setting up presentations as a servant of God rather than a college applicant. To become great leaders and a good influence to our underclassmen who will succeed us and be able to set up quality smooth liturgies and assemblies moving on. Our life is meant to be Christ-like as an influence. We want to put our all into having better and better events for our fellow classmates. So we can prove to the student and faculty body what we are capable of. It builds a lot of character and gives you a great work ethic. The leadership and qualities you get out of Core Team are highly valuable and it helps the school a ton to be part of the team or even Youth Ministry.

Prayer and Worship Committee Head Matthew Castañeda (BMET ’25)

I got involved in Core Team when I was at a lower point in my life and I feel being a part of Youth Ministry these past few years has really reconnected me with my faith and brought me into a community where I can serve others. I hope that this year we can unite to express our faith with our Salesian brothers from St John Bosco and Bishop Mora Salesian, ultimately setting the bar higher for next year’s Core Team, leaving a mark after some of us graduate this year. I believe it is important to have a vibrant Core Team here at Bosco Tech because we are the Church in the Salesian Oratory Model. We are the group that comes together and brings the Church aspect of the Oratory Model life into Bosco Tech’s student life. I would definitely encourage underclassmen to join youth ministry because keeping this vibrant community of brothers is a key part in how Bosco thrives every year.

Daniel Munoz (BMET ’25)

I chose to be involved in Core Team to help lead the school in liturgy, prayer services, retreats, and character assemblies. This year, I hope that our Core Team can make all of our duties go as smoothly as possible and for the events to be the best that Bosco Tech has experienced in years. I think that with a vibrant group of students in Core Team, it can help the school community with school spirit in order to attract more students to Core Team/Youth Ministry to keep the traditions going strong for the years to come.

Character Assembly Committee Head Ricardo Martinez (ACE ’26)

Core Team spreads the love of God through campus ministry and liturgies. I love being a part of spreading that love and grace to the whole school. I hope we continue spreading the love of God and helping students appreciate the liturgies, reconciliations, and character assemblies we host. God’s love is spread through activity and through vibrant people who want to spread that love. Through this vibrant Core Team we have, we can accomplish that goal and reach all students. I would recommend anyone to get involved in the Youth Ministry and help out with the events we host. It is an opportunity to help your school while also growing your own faith with God.

Retreat Committee Head Gianni Carrano (CSEE ’26)

I am involved in Core Team because I feel a strong sense of connection to the youth ministry side of Bosco Tech. I love working with other youth ministers and hope to encourage others to join. This year, I hope the Core gets new members acquainted with our youth ministry and enthusiastic about helping with youth ministry-related events to help our community. I think it’s important to have a vibrant youth ministry team to do what we do because it gets others involved with ministry around campus and gets those around us to be excited about faith in their lives. I would encourage newer students to join youth ministry’s Core Team because not only do we get to help out the community around us and better our school community, but we also gain a lot of leadership and personal experience.

Sound Committee Head Daniel Cendejas (ACE ’24)

I really enjoy helping to bring God’s message to the Bosco Tech community, through service in the youth ministry events. I hope that the team can execute all of the events to the best of their abilities so that God’s message reaches everyone in the community. I hope that our team will carry out the work of Jesus in today’s world. With a diverse Core Team, youth ministry will be better able to serve the Bosco community. Having diversity better represents such a diverse school. I would encourage younger students to get involved in youth ministry because service of others is a major message of Jesus. I have also seen how much just a little service can humble even the most proud people.

Thank you for all you do, gentlemen!

REPRESENTING AT L.A. PRAYER EVENT

In mid-September, Bosco Tech was part of the 2,000+ sold-out crowd attending this year’s Los Angeles Catholic Prayer Breakfast at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown.

Nine Bosco Tech Campus Ministry student leaders, accompanied by Tech President Memo Gutierrez, Principal Jeff Krynen, and Salesian Director Fr. Thien Nguyen, SDB, as well as Assistant Youth Minister Brad Stolz and Youth Ministry Director Rudy Herrera, had the opportunity to represent our school at this inspiring event.

We started in the Cathedral with Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jose Gomez before a capacity crowd. What couldn’t be missed was the diversity of people attending - a cross section of the Los Angeles Archdiocese. After the Mass, we moved to the huge open plaza in front of the Cathedral to find our tables for the 8:00 am breakfast. The main event at the breakfast was the keynote speaker, Fr. Mike Schmitz who has become a Catholic YouTube superstar. His podcasts of “The Bible in a Year” has topped U.S. podcast charts many times. His “The Catechism in a Year” and numerous speaking appearances have added to his celebrity status. Fr. Mike asked us the question, “Will you let me love you as you are, right now? The very identity of God is that He is love. Mercy is the love we need the most and deserve the least. God’s mercy is strong enough to handle the weight of your sins. God’s mercy is His greatest attribute. All we have to do is answer the question, ‘Does God have your permission to love you as you are right now?’” Fr. Mike said that we need to recognize our own brokenness, “without our brokenness, we won’t know the depth to which we need that love.” His sermon will long reverberate in our hearts.

THE GRIFFITH COMPANY MEETS STUDENTS

In celebration of National Construction Appreciation Week, The Griffith Company, one of Bosco Tech’s top internship partners and one of Southern California’s earliest general contractors, conducted an informative presentation on construction industry career paths and personal branding for college and career success.

The Griffith Company has spearheaded recent projects such as LAX modernization, Universal City Pedestrian Bridge and LA Live Street improvements. ACE and IDEA upperclassmen not only learned about jobs in construction management, but benefited first-hand, from the advice of Tech alumni: Luis Cervantes, (BT ’97), Nathan Felix (ACE ’22) and Santiago Vargas (ACE ’23). Nathan and Santiago were Griffith summer interns, through the Tech’s internship program, who were invited to stay on through college.

Luis, a member of the Griffith Company’s management team for more than a decade, opened the door to the company, which has offered our graduates valuable hands-on summer internships the last three summers. He discussed the critical role of construction management in making customer’s designs dreams become reality.

Nathan and Santiago shared their insights on selecting college majors, the value of participating in an internship, and encouraged students to make the most of all the opportunities that Bosco Tech offers. They agreed that good communication, professionalism, work ethic and challenging oneself to learn new concepts were key takeaways from several summers interning at The Griffith Company.

Santiago, a sophomore at Cal State Fullerton, majoring in Civil Engineering, shared that the last two summers at The Griffith Company “helped him to build independence and grow up.” He advised the students to explore and take opportunities in life.

Nathan, who begins his junior year at UC San Diego next week, is majoring in Urban Planning and minoring in Structural Engineering. He urged students to “take risks, do internships and put yourself out there.” As life can be challenging, he also encouraged students to build a strong foundation of friends while at the Tech, attend Kairos and work on continually growing as an individual.

He also noted that the formulas he studied in Mr. Tom’s Physics class (that he never thought he would need), have given him a tremendous leg up in his Quantum Physics courses at UCSD!

X COUNTRY STARTS SEASON AT MT. SAC

BY COACH BRAD STOLZ & HEAD COACH BLAYZE FIMBRES

Bosco Tech began its 2024 season with a two-mile race at Mt. San Antonio College: the Montie Express Invitational on August 31. Mt. SAC is considered the most difficult cross country venue in the US.

The Tigers had 25 runners in the race. For the eight freshmen who ran, this was their first cross country race, as well as their first two miler, and a difficult course to run. Despite that, three freshmen, Isaac Macias, Noah Villanueva, and Luis Rosas finished 9th, 10th, and 11th among Bosco’s finishers. Junior Nicholas Renteria, seniors Andrew Rodriguez and Daniel Cendejas, and sophomore Evan Cipriani all finished in under 12 minutes, and were our first four finishers. This meet is a great learning experience since the Mt. SAC Invitational, CIF Prelims and Finals all take place there on its strenuous three-mile course.

Our second meet was the nighttime Rosemead Invitational at Rosemead HS on September 14. We ran against about 60 schools. The races were divided by grades, and we had 33 runners attend. It was the first three mile race for our freshmen and also several others. Freshmen finished in 9th place, sophomores 19th, and the seniors 10th. 18 of our athletes ran under 20 minutes Senior Andrew Rodriguez was the Tech’s fastest runner: 16:41.2. Sophomore Evan Cipriani, our second fastest, and seniors Vincent Hernandez and Jaeden Vo all ran in the 17s. Noah Villanueva and Isaac Macias did a great job in the 18s as our fastest freshmen.

Woodbridge Invitational at the Great Park Sports Complex in Irvine on September 20 came next. It, too, was at night and was huge with thousands attending with schools from all over California. Most races had 300+ runners and were divided by grades plus varsity races. 19 of our 32 athletes attending set a new personal record (PR). Sophomore Tristan Nguyen’s record was about four minutes faster! In the varsity race, seniors Danny Cendejas and Andrew Rodriguez finished in the 16s, with sophomore Evan Cipriani PR-ing and coming in a great third for our team, beating senior Vincent Hernandez by three seconds. Freshmen Noah Villanueva and Isaac Macias were our 7th and 9th place finishers. They, together with Luis Rosas, helped the freshmen team come into 10th place out of 67 teams. This is very praiseworthy and promising for our team since none were previous cross country runners!
