Greetings, Tech Family--
This academic year has passed so quickly! It seems like we just welcomed our freshman class a few short months ago. As our students and teachers wrap up another successful school year, I’d like to wish our seniors the very best in life.
In this issue of The Gear, dedicated to the graduating Class of 2024, you’ll find words of wisdom and good wishes to the seniors by our faculty and staff. Joining in these sentiments, I’d like to offer to the seniors an adage from Albert Einstein who said, “Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.“ While your educational path is far from over and a new chapter is beginning, please remember that you always have a home here, with people who care about you, have your back, and are cheering you on!
To our underclassmen, as I’m sure your parents already have recommended, please start any summer reading and projects early. As Ms. Gambill has stressed to our juniors, continue researching colleges and majors and start drafting personal statements during the quiet days of summer; there will be so many senior activities in the next school year that you don’t want to miss. If you are prepring to start a summer internship, please keep us posted about how it’s going. You’ll learn a lot of practical lessons in the coming weeks.
We’re all here to help, to guide you, and to write letters of recommendation for you (just give your chosen instructors, advisors, and coaches ample time to effectively do so.) Oh, and be sure to create or update your resume or accomplishment list to help them make their letters more personal and tailored to you. Freshman, congratulations; you are now seasoned Tech students. Sophomores, you now are considered ‘upper classmen.’ Use that title wisely.
And to our newest Techmen, the incoming class of 2028--welcome! May you find in Bosco Tech a home away from home and a brotherhood like no other! I say this from experience, as an alumnus, myself.
Withgratitudeforourcommunity, MemoGutierrez(AU‘83) President
Chris Hansen is Head of Mechanical Engineering at Radiant, a start-up with a long-term goal of making nuclear power portable and accessible anywhere. Currently in preapplication with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for their portable microreactor, Kaleidos, Radiant is partnered with the Department of Energy and Idaho National Labs to test a fueled prototype version of Kaleidos in 2026.
Prior to joining Radiant, Chris spent more than 18 years at SpaceX where he served the majority of his tenure as Director of Development Testing. For the first few years, Chris was the responsible engineer (RE) for separation systems on the Falcon launch vehicles. With separation systems being one of the main points of failures historically for rockets, Elon Musk tasked Chris to test his systems extensively to ensure high reliability. Over time, Chris built up a team of 50 engineers and technicians to perform testing of all structures and mechanisms that were in development by SpaceX for Falcon, Dragon, Starlink, and Starship.
The path towards engineering and manufacturing for Chris began at an early age. His father, Dr. Ralph Hansen, was a dentist, but was always very handy around the house and his practice, fixing equipment and remodeling his dental office. It was working with his father where Chris learned that he loved to build and work on hardware. Chris saw Bosco Tech’s technology program as an opportunity to learn more hardware-related skills, and it was during his freshman year rotation through Manufacturing Technology when he fell in love with manufacturing. His experience at Bosco Tech led him to continue his studies at the University of Southern California where he earned both a bachelors and masters in Mechanical Engineering.
Chris and his wife, Jenny, and their 11-year-old daughter, Lili, reside in Palos Verdes Estates. The couple recently established a scholarship endowment at the Tech. In their downtime, the family enjoys traveling, visiting Disneyland, and watching Lili dance ballet.
Five outstanding seniors have been nominated for Bosco Tech’s Cardinal James McIntyre Award. Given in honor of the founder of the Tech, the award is annually bestowed upon a senior who, in the eyes of the technology faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the school. The recipient of this award has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, and involvement in the community, while also excelling in their academic studies.
This award encompasses many aspects of a student’s life and reflects the notion that it is through growth and development as a whole person that an individual sets himself apart and pursues a path through life that will lead to spiritual, personal and professional success. The award acknowledges a student’s conviction in all these areas.
Congratulations to the 2024 Cardinal McIntyre Award nominees:
- Architecture & Construction Engineering --Anthony Ramirez
- Biological, Medical & Environmental Technology--Nicholas Dominguez
- Computer Science & Electrical Engineering-Wesley Bulthuis
- Integrated Design, Engineering & Art--Caleb Glasgow
- Materials Science, Engineering & Technology--Henry Yang
- Media Arts & Technology-Phoenix Rivera
Each nominee was interviewed by a panel of technology department chairmen who then selected one recipient. The award winner will be named at graduation and presented with a cash scholarship sponsored by the Bosco Tech Alumni Association. All of the nominees are to be commended for their achievement!

Bosco Tech is proud to announce this year’s valedictorian and co-salutatorians. This year’s Frank R. Seaver Valedictorian honor has been awarded to senior Caleb Glassow (IDEA). Andrei De La Cruz (BMET), and Wesley Bulthuis (CSEE) (left to right, below) have earned Co-Salutatorian honors.
“These fine young men epitomize the best of Bosco Tech,” said Tech Principal Jeff Krynen. “We’re incredibly proud of them. Their hard work, accomplishment, and overall outstanding citizenship make them perfect candidates to represent the class of 2024. Best wishes to each of them and the entire graduating class.”
In the fall, Caleb will attend Duke University to study Mechanical Engineering. He said, “The most important thing I will take from Bosco with me to Duke is my preference for hands-on work because, during my time at Bosco, I always loved working on my own projects and building things, such as a computer mouse or electric bass. What I’m most excited about at Duke is using their machine shop and other facilities to continue doing this.”
Andrei is still selecting from among several schools including the University of Washington and the University of San Francisco, where he will study Nursing. “Something from Bosco Tech that I will take with me is how to effectively communicate with others in a team setting,” he shared. “Bosco placed a lot of emphasis on how to work well in a group setting and it has helped me build good skills related to group work.”
Wesley, who is also still selecting from a long list of top universities, will study Electrical Engineering. “From Bosco Tech, I will take with me my work ethic, willingness to learn, and ambition to be my best,” he said. Congratulations and Godspeed, gentlmen!
What an amazing time our fathers and son (and other dear family members) had at Sunday’s Father Son Mass & Breakfast. Thank you to our incredible volunteers and everyone who put together a fun and memorable event!
Here’s to our students and the important fathers and father figures in their lives!
Congratulations to soon-to-be-graduating senior Riley De Luna (Media Arts & Technology ‘24) who has officially signed his letter of intent to join the University of La Verne’s football team.
Riley played center and nose guard on the Tiger team.
Go, Riley! Go, La Verne Leopards!
Congratulations to Tech freshman Andy Cao who has been selected to participate in the prestigious Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS) that works to increase the pool of students prepared to enter highly selective colleges and universities.
The year-round three-year program provides instruction from Pomona College professors in such topics as critical inquiry and mathematics. Students live on campus during the summer, when they complete a rigorous liberal arts curriculum, while gaining networking and mentoring opportunities. SAT preparation and college advisement is provided through to years. Program seniors are involved in faculty research and begin their college application process.
Andy, who is enrolled in Bosco Tech’s Biological, Medical & Environmental Technology program, is very active in the school’s Red Cross Club and, in his free time, volunteers at Cal Tech’s Speaker Series.
The faculty and administration of Don Bosco Technical Institute would like to congratulate the Class of 2024 for all they have accomplished during their four years here. Our graduates have earned acceptances to colleges and universities across the country, including Stanford and each of the UCs. We are so proud of their remarkable achievements and wish each graduate Godspeed in their educational endeavors!

Wesley Bulthuis (CSEE ‘24) (left): From Troop 174 in Temple City, Wesley has been a scout since 2017. His Eagle Scout project focused on the maintenance and restoration of the Mt. Wilson Historical Trail for the Sierra Madre Conservancy, a distance of approximately 1.3 miles. The work included brushing, digging drainages, backtrailing/flattening of certain areas, as well as the coordination of the cutting and removal of a tree trunk which had fallen across the trail. Wesley is mechanical/design lead in the Tech’s competitive FIRST Robotics Team. He completed a summer internship at The Boeing Company last summer.
Still considering his many college acceptances, Wesley plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. He said that, from Bosco Tech, “I will take with me my work ethic, willingness to learn, and ambition to be my best.”
Trevor Cliffton (MAT) (center) Trevor is part of La Canada’s Troop 502. His Eagle Scout project was to build and install a gate at his local church, as well as refinishing rusted fencing. Since the church did not have a gate to separate and secure the back area of the property, equipment was often stolen. The new gate requires a key, eliminating future theft. Trevor will attend Pasadena City College in the fall, with plans to USC as a business major.
“One thing I will take with me from Bosco Tech is the brotherhood,” he said. “You don’t really realize it when you start as a freshman, but the people you meet here are lifelong friendships. I value all of them.”
Anthony Ramirez (ACE ‘24) (left): Anthony is a part of San Marino’s Troop 355. His Eagle Scout project focused on refurbishing a wall in the ACE department’s classroom. He and his team cut, sanded and installed birch plywood paneling. They also replaced existing door and window trim with matching
birch. They then stained and coated all the wooden surfaces. Anthony is the co-founder and co-president of Tech’s Chess Club and a member of NHS, SNHS, Ambassadors, and the FRC robotics team. He will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he will study Civil Engineering and participate in the Army ROTC program. Great job, gentlemen!
The sophomores had a great class retreat on April 26; it was a day filled with reflection, prayer, encouragement and brotherhood. In just a few weeks, this group will be upperclassmen, the big brothers of the campus.
What an incredible evening with the Tech’s jazz band and the Sam Hankins Project! Smooth jazz sounds filled Tech Hall at Jazz Night Out on April 26. Guests were treated to delicious food, great company, talented musicians, and great sounds. Thank you to the Tech’s talented jazz band and to Mr. Hankins and his band members for a memorable evening of terrific entertainment.
Congratulations to ACE seniors! Not only did the class successfully compete as a team at the annual Construction Industry Education Foundation’s Design Build Competition on April 10 and 11, but, prior to the event, all 17 team members completed OSHA safety training and certification that they can add to their resumes.
“The event created an opportunity for our students to see their peers and how they work at the same time opening their eyes to other career options,” said ACE Chair Brian Waters. “This year’s competition opened the eyes of a few of our students as to how challenging the process of designing and then building a structure under strict guidelines really is.”
To see an aerial view of the two-day competition site, held at Golden West College, visit: https://www.cie.foundation/ design-build.html.
Bosco Tech welcomed a nationally respected voice on child and adolescent learning and development on April 17. Dr. Ioakim Boutakidis, met with students, parents and faculty in three tailored sessions to discuss Preparing Young Men for Academic Success.
Dr. Boutakidis, the chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and a professor of Child & Adolescent Stuides at Cal State Fullerton, shared his extensive research with our community. His well-respected research has appeared in national media including the LA Times, CNN and NPR.

On April 16, the Tech community came together to generously donate blood at our annual Spring Blood Drive. Bosco Tech is one of the top high schools donating blood to Cedars-Sinai Hospital. While many schools have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels of giving, Bosco Tech has achieved that milestone and will be recognized by Cedars-Sinai Hospital with a scholarship award next month.
In total, 33 donors, including students, parents, faculty and staff, gave 29 pints of life saving blood, bringing the year’s total to 58 pints. We are proud of our students; they donated 50 percent of the blood collected. We are especially pleased to recognize three seniors who have consistently donated blood since they were eligible. Seniors Eduardo Giron (MAT), Saif Halari (MAT), and Nathan Rozario (CSEE), thank you for consistently donating!
Partnering with Cedars-Sinai, the DBTI Red Cross Club sponsors two blood drives a year. Mark your calendars now for the Fall Blood Drive on October 22.
Alumni, join us in the coming weeks for networking with your Tech brothers from the area.
Getting together Techmen, no matter where you live-that’s what these free gatherings are all about. No speeches, no fund requests-just an opportunity to catch up with Tech alumni in your neighborhood, enjoy appetizers and a beverage in a low-key setting, and visit with your brothers for a while.
