Over the past several years, it has been my privilege to update you each Spring on our progress as a school community. It is with a tremendous sense of appreciation and excitement that I report to you that Bosco Tech is strong - and getting even stronger.
There is much to be proud of at Tech too much to include in detail here so I will touch on just a few of the happenings that are made possible through the continued of alumni, parents, and friends of the Tech. If you’d like to read the full update, visit: issuu.com/boscotech/docs/ spring_report_2023
Remembering Our Own. Understanding how much Tech Board member Bishop David O’Connell loved our school, our boys, and wanted nothing more than to see us succeed, his loyal support group, the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick, came together with the Tech community, and the O’Connell family to honor his legacy. The gathering was the largest fundraiser in school history, bringing 330 people to our campus and raising over $275,000 for our boys.
Facilities Transformation. We were blessed to undergo a full renovation of our administrative lobby this past summer, transforming the space into a welcoming environment that showcases the innovation of a Tech school and the foundation of our Catholic, Salesian community. We are grateful to the Dan Murphy and Bill Hannon Foundations, whose gifts allowed for this renovation.
Professional Development. As part of our strategic plan, the school made a commitment to invest in a meaningful professional development program for our faculty and staff. To date, we have welcomed four guest speakers and placed special emphasis on the social and emotional impact of the pandemic, screen time and healthy online habits, the college application process, and teaching/parenting during anxious times. Additionally, our campus ministry team constructed two impactful faculty retreats based on Salesian education. This programming has been made possible by the generosity of our donor community, and has had a profound impact on faculty cohesion and the educational program at Tech.
Focusing on the Future. Last November, the consulting firm of Ian Symmonds & Associates conducted an extensive survey regarding co-ed feasibility. Over 900 people were surveyed. In March, Mr. Symmonds presented a comprehensive analysis and review of the findings to our Board and administration. While the findings were favorable to an eventual move to co-education, the Board remains committed to leaving no stone unturned as we continue to explore the possibility. The final vote and decision will occur at the June 13 Board of Trustees meeting. If there is a favorable decision for going co-ed, there will be no changes to the current educational program until the Fall of 2026, at the earliest.
Technology Upgrades. The generosity of our donors allows us to strive to keep our curriculum and equipment relevant and cutting edge. To that end, a major investment of over $100,000 was recently made in our Media Arts and Technology program, providing 30 new, state-of-the-art MSI Aegis tower computers, along with brand new MSI monitors and a full furniture replacement, with customized seating.
Widening Our Reach. In any independent school, enrollment management and the admissions process is the lifeblood of the school’s revenue and ability to grow. Over the past year and a half, major changes have been made to the admissions staff and systems. In 2021-2022, we were fortunate to welcome
(continued on next page)
Mr. Tom Hogan as our new Director of Admissions, Mrs. Diana Kelly as Assistant Director of Admissions, and Ms. Samantha Tsai as Admissions Associate. Along with Director of Tuition Assistance, Mr. John Garcia, increased resources have allowed us to transform our admissions process, focusing on a holistic family approach to admissions and enrollment, and widening our reach across the Los Angeles market.
Celebrating Victory. This winter, the community was thrilled by Tech Basketball's historic run to the school’s first CIF Southern Section (Div 5AA) title, defeating Lynwood High School 88-85 in the finals. This team is special, led by Coach Michael Romo (PT ‘10), who has built a trend-setting program from the ground up. We look forward to a bright future for the Tech basketball program - built the right way!
These are just a few of the ways we are growing while keeping our focus on the future of our community. Your generosity provides vital resources that keep Tech in position as a national leader in high school education, and provide our boys with the opportunity to access a nationally-unique program.
This year, I look forward to not only updating you on the progress made in our Strategic Plan, but also to discuss in more detail the next phase in our growth: a new Academic Building that will further accelerate Tech’s reputation not just in Los Angeles - but across the country.
With Golden Dreams and Hopes Abounding, Memo Gutierrez (AU ‘83) President

Five outstanding seniors have been nominated for Bosco Tech’s Cardinal James McIntyre Award. Given in honor of the founder of Bosco Tech, the award is annually bestowed upon a senior who, in the eyes of the technology faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the school. The recipient of this award has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, and involvement in the community, while also excelling in their academic studies.
This award encompasses many aspects of a student’s life and reflects the notion that it is through growth and development as a whole person that an individual sets himself apart and pursues a path through life that will lead to spiritual, personal and professional success. The award acknowledges a student’s conviction in all these areas.
Congratulations to the 2022 Cardinal McIntyre Award nominees:

Congratulations to Tech senior Nicholas Quezada (IDEA) who has earned Eagle Scout ranking. Nicholas, a part of Montebello’s Troop 476, has been working toward the prestigious goal since he was in first grade. For his Eagle project, he created an American flag drop off box so that people in the community are able to place their flags in the hands of people who are able to properly retire them.
“It was a feeling like no other to be able to walk out of my Eagle Scout interview knowing I had completed and earned a rank that only 6% of scouts ever achieve,” said Nicholas. “After graduating from Bosco Tech, I plan to pursue a career in the aerospace industry.”
Nicholas invited Tech community members who are interested in dropping off flags that need to be retired, to please visit the box located at Fire Station 55, 600 N Montebello Blvd, Montebello, CA 90640.

The objective of a recent Physical Science experiment was to investigate what soda pop is and how it is made. Soda pop is essentially carbonated water (water into which carbon dioxide is mixed with a sweetener). Carbonated water is water into which carbon dioxide has been dissolved under high pressure. Carbonation occurs in nature when water underground comes in contact with a source of carbon, such as limestone. The reaction between the water, limestone, and the high pressure of the earth creates carbon dioxide and dissolves it into the water.
In this lab experiment, students used baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), citric acid, and sweeteners to develop their own soda pop recipe. When they mixed baking soda and citric acid together with water, a chemical reaction took place creating carbon dioxide in the water (carbonated water). The class enjoyed doing the lab experiment, especially the tasting of the soda pop!
Our hats are off to our students who’ve been working out together during lunch in the Yurak Athletic Center’s weight room all year! They’re supervised by Mr. Carlos Plantillas, Dean of Student Services, a former P.E. and football coach. Coach Plantillas’ goal has always been to instill a lifelong learning of a healthy lifestyle and fitness.
“I encourage every young man to exercise regularly and live a healthy lifestyle through work outs, sports, proper diet and positive mind set,” he says. “Along with working out, they often ask for advice on how to begin or change their workout routine, eating plans, and gaining a positive attitude and outlook on life.”
“Studies have shown weight lifting and exercising regularly can reduce the amount of stress, produced by the daily grind of high school and ‘teen life’ bring. Exercising regularly is a positive outlet for anyone and I'm thrilled the school offers that opportunity to our young men during our lunch hour.”
Great job, gentlemen; thank you, Coach Plantillas!
Congratulations to the Tech' basketball team for the recognition team members and Coach Romo continue to receive for their incredible season. Kudos to:

The Tech’s 2023 College Week offered insights for students from all class years to help even our youngest Techmen to consider and plan their academic career. Beginning with a presentation to sophomores from UC Riverside, to instruction in the application process from UC system representatives, to guidance on taking the next step for seniors already admitted to Cal Poly, Pomona, the week’s activities offered practical guidance. Whittier College and Woodbury University even offered Instant Decision Days for interested seniors.
The Bosco Tech 2022-23 Cheer Team was made up of 14 members this year. Our cheerleaders came from the all-girl campuses of Ramona Convent, San Gabriel Mission, St. Joseph and St. Lucy. Team members served over 300 community service hours, attended multiple on-campus activities and will graduate three seniors this year.
The teams' two favorite community service events were the Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Neighborhood Can Drive in which the Tech Freshmen ASB officers helped. The three favorite Open House, Homecoming Rally and the fall spirit games were our member’s favorite special events. Captains Kiana Wong and Tatiana Estrada lead our team through the season and during our competition season. They both showed great leadership and grace in challenging situations. Our seniors are TatianaEstrada-San Gabriel Mission/Cal State Fullerton- Computer Science, HerlindaCasanova-St. Joseph/Rio Hondo College - Marine Biology/ indoor and sand volleyball andMadeline Palacio - Ramona Convent/Colorado State- Animal Science.
The team and staff would like to thank our parents, staff, administrators, and maintenance staff for the support and all their hard work this year. We had an amazing time supporting our students including our football, soccer, volleyball teams and our awesome marching band! These truly have been “The moments we live for!”
Our assistant coaches, Angelia and Jadaare both in their second year with the program and both Graduated from San Gabriel Mission High School. Angelia is attending Cal State LA, majoring in Biology. Jada participated on both Bosco’s comp team , open division all-stars and Mt. SAC’s cheer team. She is majoring in Psychology.
Tech juniors wrapping up this year’s internship preparation program polished their interpersonal skills by completing mock interviews with school administration and staff. Asked standard interview questions, the students brought their professional best and discussed ways to enhance their overall presentation. Staff provided valuable feedback and practical advice, encouraging students to research the companies, ask pertinent questions, share key points about their goals, strengths and interests, and give employers a chance to get to know them.
“A mock interview is invaluable preparation for actually preparing for an internship or job interview,” said Mrs. Anne Sigoloff, who oversees the program. “Our students did a great job and were articulate and impressive.” Please join us in wish our juniors the best as they complete in-person and virtual real interviews for summer internships in the aerospace, civil engineering, media, software and biotech industries!
Our Track and Field athletes continued their winning ways during their March-April meets. League Meet #2 fell victim to the rainy weather and was postponed five days, eventually taking place in much better conditions on March 27 at St. Paul HS. In the JV 1600 race, Bosco Tech took 1st and 6th, with junior Khiru Khan leading. Senior Christian Perez won the varsity 400 and is league leader with his time of 52.4 seconds. Christianalso won the varsity 800 with sophomore Danny Cendejas coming in second. At this point, Bosco JV was 1st in the league, and Varsity 4th.
The next meet was the Bears Classic - LA County Championships at Warren High School in Downey on April 1. Danny finished fifth in the frosh/soph 800 race. Christianwon the Varsity 800, becoming LA County Champion with a time of 2:00.23. On the throwing field, junior Jake Ayala came in third in varsity discus with a toss of 116’9”.
League Meet #3 was on April 5 at St. Paul. This was a very good meet for all, but especially for three athletes. Jake won varsity discus. Danny won the 800 and 3200 races. Distance runner Christiancame in fourth in a varsity sprint race - the 200 in 24.09, and he won the varsity 400 and 1600. Our Varsity stayed fourth in a league of eight teams.
The San Gabriel Valley Championships took place at the Covina District Stadium on April 15. Participation in the meet is by qualification only. This year, we had 19 athletes qualify, while we had only 7 qualify last year quite an impressive change! Danny became the San Gabriel Valley Frosh/Soph Champion by winning the 1600. He came in #2 in the 3200. Christian finished 5th in the varsity 1600 in 4:29.07, and gained the San Gabriel Valley Championship by winning the 800 in 1:59.56. Back on the field, Jake made final cut in Varsity discus. Sophomores AriaParvinjahand JohnLugo were in the top 20 in frosh/soph discus. Ariawas in the top 15 in the frosh/soph shotput with a throw of36’7”.
There were too many PRs (Personal Records) made to list. All in all, these were good meets for our Bosco Tech athletes!
Techmen, join us as we welcome the newest group of Tech graduates, the Class of 2023, into the Alumni Association. Be part of the traditional alumni reception line during graduation and stay for a casual gathering of alumni after the ceremony; catch up with old friends over complimentary appetizers and drinks.
The Baccalaureate Mass and commencement ceremony begin at 5:00 p.m.; the get-together, on the alumni patio, immediately follows. Please let us know you'll be there by emailing Mr. Phil Consuegra at pconsuegra@boscotech.edu.
Thanks to our American Red Cross club, students and parents who donated blood during the recent blood drive on campus. Partnering again with Cedars-Sinai, the club’s efforts paid off!
Overall, forty three donors donated a total of 37 pints of life-saving blood. That brings the Tech’s total for the year to 56 pints.
In the U.S., someone needs blood and or platelets every two seconds, and every donation can help save more than one life.
We had a very busy April month with five of our spring sports finishing up their seasons. All five spring sports: baseball, golf, tennis, volleyball, track and field all competed their best and showed great improvement throughout the season.
Baseball finished either in second place in the Santa Fe league under first-year Head Varsity Coach James Luna. The baseball team qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 playoffs. The official brackets will be released on May 7. During league play, we defeated two ranked League Division 7 opponents (#2nd ranked St. Genevieve and #9th ranked Cantwell). In addition, there was at one time in the league season, four out of the six teams in the Santa Fe league ranked in the top 10. We were ranked #9 the following week after defeating ninth ranked Cantwell. Tiger playoffs bound for 2019. Good luck to our baseball team in the CIF-SS Division 7 playoffs! Track and Field We have, as of now, two participants qualified for the CIF-SS Division 4 Track and Field Prelims on Saturday, May 6th. Junior, Jake Ayalawas league champion in discus. Senior JustinRoybal finished third in discus and also qualified. Senior ChristianPerez was league champion again in the 800 meters, 1600 meters and the 3200 meters. In addition, it was his third year being league champion in the 800 meters. Sophomore, Daniel Cendejas was runner up in the 1600 and 3200 meters. Good luck to these four student-athletes who qualified in seven events for the CIF-SS Division 4 Track and Field Prelims on May 6!
