Where Has the Time Gone? Class of ‘23 FSP

(Cover Page Part 2)

Bosco Tech’s Monthly Newsletter Issue 131 June 2023

Message from the Principal

Dear Bosco Tech Family

Is it just me or does it seem like this past school year has gone by more quickly than others? Here we are in the home stretch. Our seniors are graduating, and our underclassmen have finished final exams and are making plans for the summer, whether it be internships for juniors or the FSP for our incoming freshman class.

In this issue, dedicated to the graduating Class of 2023, you’ll see blessings, words of wisdom, and good wishes imparted to our seniors by our faculty and staff. I’d like to use the remainder of my letter to send a message of my own to, not just our seniors, but also to their younger Tech brothers:

 Seniors: May the positives you have gained, learned, experienced in the last four years stay with you always. Stay in touch with your Tech brothers, with whom you’ve shared a unique experience, with your instructors, who continue to pray for your well being and success, and with Bosco Tech and our vibrant Alumni Association that provides a network on contacts and opportunities.

 Juniors: As Ms. Gambill and, no doubt, your parents have encouraged you continue your college research and begin drafting your application essays and personal statements this summer. College application season comes early in the fall, and beginning the process ahead of schedule not only gives you a head start, but enables you more fully enjoy the many senior and school-wide activities planned for next school year. We’re all hear to help, to guide you, and to write letters of recommendation for you (just give your chosen instructors, advisors, and coaches ample time to effectively do so.) Oh, and be sure to create or update your resume or accomplishment list to help them make their letters more tailored.

 Sophomores: Congratulations on moving into the realm of ‘upperclassman.’ Use your knowledge wisely and remember to help the underclassmen, especially our incoming freshmen who will be learning the unique ways of the Tech (it sounds like a Jedi reference, doesn’t it?)

 Freshmen: Congratulations to the Class of 2026; you made it you are no longer freshmen! Have an enjoyable and relaxing summer, but start any summer assignments early!

 Incoming freshmen: Welcome to our newest students. May you find in Bosco Tech a home away from home and a brotherhood like no other! I say this from experience, as an alumnus, myself.

My prayer for each of our young people, and their families, in the coming months is that they rely on God’s promises of direction and hope. A favorite verse of mine is one that I pray for each of you: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you a future and a hope.” The words of the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 29:11) may have been intended for the ancient Israelites, but they are applicable and hope-filled for today’s believers, as well. Thank you to our Tech families for your tremendous ongoing support of our school community. Our campus are a thriving environment where young people flourish, due in no small part to your dedication and commitment. Have a great summer!

God bless the Classes of ‘23, 24, ‘25, 26, and ‘27

Never forget Bosco Tech will always be your home, your community, and your family for years to come. Prayers and blessings on your graduation and for a happy successful future. Congratulations, gentlemen, on all you have accomplished. I pray that you seek and love God more with each passing day. There is nothing more important. Board of Trustees Seeking Parent Representative

As we prepare for the 2023-2024 school year, we are in need of a new Bosco Tech Board of Trustees Parent Representative.

Understanding the unique and invaluable perspective of parents, the Board of Trustees (BOT) provides one non-voting seat for a current parent. The individual will be responsible for representing the interests of Bosco Tech parents at board meetings and acting as a conduit to parents on vital board matters.

If you are interested in applying for the two-year term or would like to nominate someone, please review the criteria, nomination process, and application form (click here or pick up at the school’s front desk). All applications are due by June 30. Contact BOT Nominating Committee Chair Mr. Martin Hairston at mhairston@boscotech.edu with questions and to submit completed applications.

Advanced Placement Exams Update

This school year, 128 Tech students completed a total of 282 exams in 19 different subjects during the May exam period. Bosco Tech currently offers 17 Advanced Placement classes and several of our students elected to exercise the ‘exam only’ option by testing in subjects (Chinese Language & Culture and Physics

1) that they felt they would do well in, even though they are not current course offerings. Students in every grade level were included in the testing, the majority being juniors and seniors.

Test results will be released by the College Board in July. We are proud of our students for taking the AP challenge and are sure that they will do well. Each year, several of our students earn College Board recognition for their accomplishments.

We encourage every Techman to enroll in the Tech’s AP program in the subjects that most interest them. Questions about AP courses? Contact Mr. Richard M. Ronan, Tech Registrar at rronan@boscotech.edu.

Alumnus Soared for Goodyear

“You never know what you'll discover.” –Goodyear blimp slogan

Flying over the World Series, Olympic Games, and NFL Monday Night Football events and traversing the U.S. from 1,000 feet above the ground offers a unique perspective of our country and of life.

Tech alumnus John R. Crayton’s (ME ’63) 37-year career as Goodyear’s Pilot in Charge of California Airship Operations gave him a remarkable vantage point few have shared. Officially called an airship or dirigible, most of us recognize his vehicle of choice as the Goodyear blimp.

Life was never boring for this Techman. He was in the air when the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area and when the Redondo Beach pier caught fire the year prior. On the lighter side, Harrison Ford, B.B. King, and NBA legend Elan Baylor were among the memorable passengers John has had the privilege of flying. He worked with the American Cetacean Society, conducting whale watching tours from the air.

Originally hired by Northrop Aircraft Company as a material research technician after graduating from the Tech’s Metallurgy program in 1963, John earned a degree in Business and Management from the University of the Redlands. While completing his flight instructor rating, he worked at Torrance Airport and was a flight instructor at Palos Verdes Aviation flight school.

One of his students, seeking advanced flight training, was a Goodyear blimp pilot. He offered John a position flying the dirigible based at Goodyear’s Airship Operations in Carson, California. Extensively trained by four experienced Goodyear pilots, John passed the FAA airship exams to become a Junior Airship Pilot, then Senior Pilot, and ultimately, Pilot in Charge, where he remained at the helm until 2008.

Now retired, the Torrance resident mostly stays planted on solid ground, except when he’s sailing out of Redondo Beach’s King Harbor. On shore, John and his wife, Nancy, a retired school teacher, enjoy trying out new recipes and completing home projects.

“I’ve had an amazing life,” he said. “I’ve been behind the scenes of so many things I would not otherwise have been able to do and saw things from a wholly different perspective.” *

“Something that has stayed with me from my Tech days is the use of the scientific method to approach problems I encounter in life,” John said. “Eliminate variables and focus on the problem. Test each approach and figure out which one works the best.”

Advising today’s students, he proffered, “Use your skills that you learn at Bosco Tech to seek a fulfilling career and keep an open mind about things you encounter in life. Don't be afraid to make changes and take chances.”

Junior to Intern at Keck Graduate Institute Program

Congratulations to Tech junior Andrei De La Cruz who will intern this summer at the Keck Graduate Institute - KGI, the newest member of the Claremont Colleges.

The internship, offered to exceptionally motivated, high-achieving high school students, provides hands-on research experience and exploration of careers available in the field of biotechnology, pharmacy, medical equipment, and healthcare IT industries.

Andrei will receive one-on-one mentoring from industry professionals and faculty who will help him identify the most promising career options suited to his interests. He’ll also be able to participate in workshops and seminars offered to Keck’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE).

Currently studying Biological, Medical & Environmental Technology at Bosco Tech, Andrei is looking forward to the rare opportunity. “This internship aligns with my future goals because I want to major in biotechnology,” he explained. “I’ll gain exposure to multiple careers in the field and narrow down the options to ones I really enjoy.”

Andrei was introduced to the Keck Graduate Institute by the Tech’s internship program that places rising seniors in STEM internships throughout the Los Angeles area. For more information about the Tech’s internship program, email Mrs. Anne Sigoloff at asigoloff@boscotech.edu.

Biology Classes Dissect Life

Students in Mr. Sammy Sedky’s College Prep and AP Biology classes recently dissected fetal pigs. The relatively large size of the pig organs, and the similarity to the internal anatomy to humans, make them easy to find and identify. Studies show that hands-on lab experiences encourage students to pursue careers in science.

Esports Review

Our Esports Review Year 1: This year we competed in the HSEL (High School Esports League) and the VHEL (Valhallan Esports League)

The HSEL is a Nationwide league with large partners such as ASUS and AMD. The HSEL divide some of their titles into regional divisions that lead into national playoffs while other game titles are nationwide the entire year. The HSEL boasts a $100,000 prize pool in scholarship funds that our students can earn by winning.

The VHEL is a more regional based competition with skill division tiers to really push for a great experience for every player/school in their league. They have partnerships with companies such as Emerge (Bosco Tech Esports’ Apparel Partner) and Stay Plugged In (a company that helps high school esports athletes get scholarship opportunities for college) .

Fall Season

 Brought Back two alumni coaches for our Smash and League: Rosters Anthony Montes and Alberto Chavez. We also had alumni Nathan Nieblas volunteer as a Rocket League Coach and hired John Ciantro as Valorant coach for both rosters, as well as assistant managing.

 46 Students in Program (18 Freshmen, 5 Sophomores, 10 Juniors, 13 Seniors)

 Competed in 7 game titles across 2 Leagues VHEL and HSEL (Valorant, League of Legends Smash Ultimate, Fortnite, Rocket League, Halo, Apex Legends)

 League of Legends, Rocket League, Made HSEL Playoffs, 1 Fortnite Roster and our Apex Roster made the Finals of VHEL Playoffs

 League of Legends finished top 8 in California

 Rocket league finished in 4th in the west region (13 States) out of 110+ teams

Spring Season

 We added another alumni coach with our entry into the new title Overwatch 2

 Alumnus Aidan Calvet has also brought in other alumni to help scrimmage/practice against our Overwatch 2 roster

 45 Students in program for spring (14 Freshmen, 4 Sophomores, 13 Juniors, 14 Seniors)

 Lost smash players (A solo player title) But added a new roster for a new game title, Overwatch 2

 Competed in 8 Game Titles across two Leagues VHEL and HSEL (Valorant, League of Legends Smash Ultimate, Fortnite, Rocket League, Halo, Apex Legends Overwatch 2)

 Valorant Black, Rocket League, and Halo All made HSEL playoffs (League finished top 8 but playoffs got reduced to top 4)

 Rocket League finished 3rd in the west out of 104 teams, a placement increase from the fall

 Valorant finishes Top 24 in playoffs (15th Regular Season finish). The team was over 40th place in the fall

 Halo finishes Top 8 in the country only losing to 1 other roster all year

 Apex Legends won their VHEL Alpha Division Championship

 Overwatch 2 made VHEL playoffs and lost in the Semi finals

We had 69 unique students participate in esports across the 2 seasons. (21.3% of our student population).

(continued on next page) 16

Over the course of the year, we rebranded the Esports program with a new logo and gained an apparel company as a partner. We also partnered with MSI to bring in 30 fully equipped stations to outfit our lab in MAT that serves both classwork and our Esports program. These new stations included state of the art computers that we were the first to receive as they were not released to the general public at the time of acquiring.

This new lab equipment was put in place in the middle of the spring seasons and the results of all of our teams increased. Being in the same room practicing and competing gave our students a higher sense of cohesion and made the job easier on our coaches as well. It also helped provide better systems to some of our players that aren’t fully equipped to compete at home to the best of their ability.

As we continue to expand our esports facility, the interest in our program continues to grow. Many student shadows (visiting middle school students) have already mentioned their interest in coming here to play when they are given a tour through our lab. I am hoping to have a strong freshmen class this fall, but an even better one in the fall of 2024 as we can now market our new lab during open house events and admissions season.

This was our first year of transitioning from individual club teams to being one program and the benefits of having a centralized program, area to play, and the support of the administration have already been seen in this first year alone. We are also starting to expand and improve our production of games. We started streaming matches from personal computers at home to now moving into the studio in MAT with cameras for interviews, better stream graphics, students casting over matches, and better quality for the content we generate overall. Since the creation of the Esports youtube in October we have gotten 1,383 Views, 205.1 hours of total watch time, and gained 47 subscribers.

The players who were a part of the winning roster were: freshman NathanGarcia, junior Manuel Mendez, and seniors Gabriel Bermejo and JustinRoybal.

Parent Council Meeting

As students are busy celebrating the end of their finals and graduation, the Parent Council is already getting in gear for the 2023-24 school year. The Parent Council is a great way to keep up with what is happening at the Tech. Bring your energy and ideas to help prepare for school events, meet other parents and strengthen our parent community.

The next few Parent Council meetings are in person so we can get to know one another, but we also host monthly meetings virtually once the school year begins. Engage and participate with parents and administration – share your talents and ideas! Be part of a dynamic team and support the school. We need you, yes you – come to the meeting on July 5 at 6 p.m. in the library. Learn how the gift of your participation in the Parent Council can help! Contact Mrs. Cathy Rivera at crivera@boscotech.edu for more information.
