Dear Bosco Tech Family

Happy 2023! I hope that you and your family enjoyed a festive Christmas and you are experiencing some well-earned down time as we prepare to start the New Year!

After a very successful Fall semester where 70% of our student body earned academic honors status I know our faculty and students are gearing up for the Spring semester, a time that always passes so quickly, with all the requisite activities that the months entail.

At this time, many of our seniors are already receiving exciting acceptances from colleges and universities across the country, and for many, generous scholarship packages. This is the deserved culmination of years of dedication and hard work on the part of students, and sacrifice and commitment on the part of our parents.

Please encourage your senior son to share his good news with us by having him report acceptances and possible financial packages in the Scoir dashboard (app.scoir.com). It is vital that we closely track this important information, both to share in your son’s successes, but also to help underclassman in their preparation for their future transition to college.

Speaking of underclassmen, congratulations to our freshmen! On Dec. 10, the future graduating class of 2026 made their technology selection. This crucial milestone will set the tone for their remaining years at the Tech, and I wish each freshman well in his new ‘home’ technology.

Following in their footsteps are our incoming applicants for next year’s freshman class. These eager elementary and middle school students are completing the application process and preparing to become Techmen next fall. If you know of a friend or family member who would thrive in the Tech’s unique environment, please encourage them to look into all the school has to offer you, more than anyone, understand what sets it apart among premier high schools! Our Admissions team is available to provide information on private tours and shadow visits with current students.

We will continue to keep you up to date on all that’s happening on campus. I invite you to join us for our quarterly Coffee with the Principal meetings; the next is a virtual meeting, on Friday, Jan. 13, at 8 a.m. Hosted by our dedicated Parent Council, the sessions are always good opportunities to hear the latest campus news. As always, working with your son and your family is our privilege and good communication is vital to that relationship.

Student

Most likely to grace the cover of Forbes Magazine savvy Tech students are educating each other about building and marketing their own businesses and about sound investment strategies in the newly formed Entrepreneur Club. Within the club, one group, led by junior Joshua Meyer, will cover aspects of diverse financial portfolios and the other, led by senior Christian Figueroa, will address the fundamentals of business start ups.

Advanced Placement® Course Update

Great news nearly 40 percent of the Bosco Tech student body are currently enrolled in our Advanced Placement program! They are taking one, or more, of the sixteen AP courses the Tech currently offers. These potentially college credit classes are taught in the sophomore, junior, and senior years, and, if the prerequisites are met, have included freshmen as well.

An international program of the College Board, Advanced Placement provides an opportunity for high school students to experience the challenges and rewards of college-level instruction while remaining on their high school campus. Every Tech student is encouraged to enroll in at least one AP course during their Tech years; many choose to enroll in multiple courses.

This past spring, 126 students sat for 279 AP exams, resulting in 32 Techmen being designated by the College Board as AP Scholars for their extraordinary performance. Of these students, twenty achieved the rank of "Scholar," six were awarded "Honors" status, and six were named to the highest level possible as "Scholars with Distinction."

Enrollment for the 2023-2024 AP program will take place early in this new semester. If your son chooses to accept the AP challenge, he should pay careful attention to the daily bulletin for AP enrollment information, follow the instructions for applying, and meet the specific deadlines stated. Students will be notified of AP status before the end of the Spring semester. There is no added fee for admission to the AP program at the Tech, but all students are required to take the AP Exam administered in May of each academic year. The College Board assesses a fee, currently $96/exam, collected through FACTS. The Tech requires that students enrolled in AP courses take the exam as a condition to receive AP designation on their transcript and the benefit of a "weighted" GPA for the course. For more information about the Tech’s AP program, see the brochure.

24 Hours of LeMons Car Race

The weekend was a great adventure complete with travel, car prep, rainy race conditions, and car repairs-for the Tech’s Car Club who competed in the “24 Hours of LeMons” Race at Sonoma Raceway on Dec. 3 and 4. Out of 120 competitors, ours was the only high school team, with six student members from Bosco Tech and three from Academia Avance Charter School.

The team did a great job working together in only their second race. They overcame a two-hour broken clutch repair and finished in a respectable 92nd place. “The team gained some valuable experience and we are confident that we will continue on the growth trajectory,” said Tech President Memo Gutierrez, shown in photo, third from right.

Bosco Tech and Academia Avance students and adult leaders (and Tech alumni) attending were, left to right: Alfonso Gonzalez (AU '83), lead mechanic and driver, Lucas Maltez (future Techman), Steve Maltez (MT '89), race consultant and driver, Aaron Padilla (Academia Avance), Roger Mora (AA), Nathan Rozario (Bosco Tech), Caleb Glassow (BT), Gabriel Morales (BT), Ryan Garcia (BT), Joaquin Maltez (BT), Fabian Colin (AA), Juan Pablo Carrillo (BT), Memo Gutierrez (AU '83), Sol Mireles (AA '18), driver, and Ricardo Mireles (EL '83), Car Club Moderator and driver.

Freshman Technology Selection Day

Congratulations to our freshmen, the Class of 2026, who made their technology selection on Dec. 10. The day included an Academic Pathways presentation by our amazing Academic Counseling team for students and parents.

Making the Season Merry and Bright

During the festive season, Tech students generously cared for others in several practical ways through food, clothing, and gift drives:

• Key Club, National Honor Society, and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica members gathered 1,000 HOPE meals to be donated to families in the Montebello Unified School District who are under-resourced and/ or experiencing homelessness. These HOPE meals consisted of nonperishable, readily edible foods. The intention is for students to have these meals over holiday breaks when school lunches are no longer available. For some students, school lunches are their main reliable source of food.

• The Kidz Feeding Kidz Christmas Drive, created by sophomore Nolan Adalin, culminated with a special delivery to ten families. Students not only gathered the ingredients for complete turkey dinners, but donated toys to the recipient children as well. The Christmas effort follows the Thanksgiving Dinner drive that gathered and donated complete meals to 15 families in need.

• National Honor Society members also collected items to help farm workers in Central California. A group of students, with chaperones Mr. Orlando Magana and Mrs. Viki Battaglia, will travel north on January 7 to personally deliver the items.

Thank you to all our students and their families for their great generosity! You have made a big difference in many lives!

Bruins Helping Bruins, Techmen Helping Techmen UCLA’s Mentoring Program Brings Together Tech Alums

When Tech alumnus Owen Lin (IDEA ‘21), currently a sophomore at UCLA, began researching the university’s popular mentoring program that pairs Bruin alumni with current students, he was impressed with the resources he came across. He saw opportunities to learn more about engineering careers and various companies, and the potential for internships and job referrals.

“I found alumni willing to help students in what they need, mainly resume reviews, interview practice, general advice, and sometimes job shadowing and internship referrals,” he said. “I was taking advantage of everything I could to facilitate my engineering career.”

After selecting engineer Nick Mansur (EL ‘71) as his mentor, Owen realized they had even more in common when he learned that Nick graduated from the Tech.

“It was amazing that we were both Techmen,” Owen said. “We had an instant connection the moment we started our conversation, breaking any initial communication barriers and awkwardness of starting the call. We had a lot to relate to, whether it'd been the Techs there, classrooms, teachers, or athletics.”

Nick agrees. “I believe that the four years I spent at Bosco Tech laid the foundation for preparing me for a career in engineering, and leadership,” he said. “Owen and I share some of the same roots, so there's a chance that the common foundation we share will build a strong relationship.”

Nick, who has spent most of his four-decade year career in engineering management, has worked for such giants as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Boeing Company, and Walt Disney Imagineering, where he was Vice President of Scientific Systems. “I've had a very satisfying career, over 45 years doing what I love to do,” he explained. “I thought that if I could share my experiences (successes, failures, etc.), it may be beneficial to others on their journey. I owe much of my success to the mentors I've had along the way.”

“I taught for six years after I finished graduate school,” he said. “It was a great feeling to watch students ‘get it’ and apply what they learned. Mentoring does that for me. I hope to be able to share some of my life stories with Owen, which may be helpful input as he makes his life choices and decisions.” Owen appreciates Nick’s willingness to help and offer guidance. “I'm very grateful for the alumni, like Nick, who are willing to help UCLA students,” he said. “The mentors have all been in similar shoes as us students, so they know the processes behind our situations and can help us grow, both professionally and personally.”

“I would definitely encourage other UCLA students to participate in the program, because speaking with a variety of alum, even if they are not my mentors, really opened up my eyes into the real-world of the industry I hope to work in,” Owen said. “The meaningful connections that can be built on this platform are very valuable. These connections can help you with internships, research, job shadowing, and even post-grad when you are looking for advice or a job!”

Go, Bruins! Go, Techmen!

Esports Update

The fall season has come to a close and preparations for the spring season have begun.

We had four teams make playoffs for their titles this season.

• League of Legends

• Rocket League

• Fortnite

• And Apex Legends

Fortnite and Apex Legends finished their regular season among the top teams in their divisions and both made it to the finals of UFEA playoffs, but missed out on a top-three finish.

League of Legends had a good playoff run, losing in the quarterfinals and finishing in the top 8 in California

Rocket League made it to the semifinals of the west division where they lost to Quartz Hill, the only team able to beat Bosco Tech throughout the whole season. They finish in fourth place out of 104 teams in the West Division

Looking forward to growing and continuing this success in the spring season!
