In referring back to materials for the Tech’s upcoming WCEA/ WASC Mid-Term Accreditation visit, I had the opportunity to look back on objectives we set a few years back, and to reflect on how far we’ve come in those intervening years.
While it has not been without challenges, we’ve continually refined our time-honored program. Through it, it seems we’ve gone from strength to strength and our students have thrived; I’m confident that the visiting review team will witness a strong community of instructors, staff, and families who prioritize the well being of young people while challenging them to do and become their very best in obtaining their educational goals.
Among some of the things I’d like to bring to your attention this month is the newly instituted Student of the Month program that recognizes exemplary young men for their dedication to their studies, their work ethic, and their instructional achievement. Based upon teachers’ monthly nominations of outstanding young people, we will spotlight students for the remainder of the school year.
Please let me remind you of a few upcoming events:
Wednesday, February 8 Junior Retreat and Unity Ceremony. After spending a day in communal prayer and bonding, the Class of 2024 will celebrate that evening with family members for the memorable Junior Unity Ceremony at 6 p.m.
Friday, February 10 Re-Enrollment deadline for 2023-2024 academic year. Please refer to information on page 10 of this issue of The Gear.
Sunday, March 5 We’ll again celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Tech Trustee Bishop David O’Connell and his loyal and welcoming friends. Come enjoy delicious Irish fare, sample a wee dram o’ whiskey, and bid on amazing auction items, all while helping our Tech students.
There really is so much going on at this time of year; our seniors are receiving exciting college acceptances every day, while our Admissions Department is assembling the future Bosco Tech graduating class of 2027. Please know it is my continual prayer that each student we are blessed with would thrive academically, socially, and spiritually during their years on our campus, and that the Salesian educational system would inspire them throughout their lives, as it has for me.
God bless you and your family, Jeff Krynen (BT ‘81)
As college acceptances reach our seniors, please be sure to let us know! We want to congratulate your son and share with you in the pride at his accomplishment! Please log all college acceptances and scholarship offers as they come in at app.scoir.com/
Bosco Tech’s Student of the Month program promotes and recognizes student success in and out of the classroom. In addition to excelling in their classwork, students must exemplify outstanding characteristics as a citizen of a Salesian school community.
A huge shout out to our December and January Students of the Month. For December: (left to right) ChristianFigueroa(’23), Caleb Glassow (‘24), Anthony Villeda (’25) and Gianni Carrano (‘26). For January, we spotlighted: (left to right, with Fr. Chinh and Fr. Thien) Lorenzo Benitez (‘23), Adrian Monteon (’24), Luis Camacho Castro (‘25), and Daniel Esqueda, Jr. (’26).
These outstanding students were nominated for this honor by their instructors for excellence in academics, character, and achievement.
“Our Students of the Month exemplify hard work and dedication to their studies,” said Tech Principal Jeff Krynen. “We’re truly proud of these young men and the additional students who will join their ranks in the coming months.”
Very well done, gentlemen!
What a great way to start the New Year! We all were cheering on 2022 Tech graduate and Eagle Scout Duke Canada when he proudly carried the banner for the City of Alhambra’s beautiful float in the 2023 Tournament of Roses Parade on January 2.
Duke, who graduated from MSET, is a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, majoring in Material Engineering. He is a member of Troop 620, based at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Hacienda Heights. Go, Duke!
Bosco Tech has named alumnus Adam Uballez varsity football head coach. Uballez, a 2012 graduate of the school’s Materials Science, Engineering Technology program, started his coaching career at the Tech as a junior varsity offensive coordinator and linebacker coach in 2013. He was promoted to varsity staff in 2015 as linebacker and running back coach.
Since that time, Uballez has coached at several local schools. He has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from California State University, Northridge and is a children’s social worker with the Los Angeles County Department of Children Family Services.
“I’m very confident that Coach Uballez’ dedication to the wellbeing of young people, attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and clear vision will be advantageous to our football program and to our school, as a whole,” said Tech Athletic Director Vincent Nolasco. “He brings a well-earned balance of coaching experience and is thoroughly knowledgeable about all key elements that comprise a first-rate program. In addition to the enthusiasm and leadership that he brings, his unique perspective as a Tech alumnus means that he understands our students and the demands of our rigorous applied-science college preparatory program.”
“I am truly blessed and honored to be able to come home to Bosco Tech as the next head football coach,” Uballez recently said. “My primary goal is to provide all our players with the coaching and resources to be successful. I will teach players through my words and actions the values of respect, resilience, empathy, teamwork, and sportsmanship that will benefit them beyond their high school football career.”
“My vision for the football program is fourfold: challenge young men to be the best on and off the field; develop a sense of commitment, including a one team, one effort attitude; and help them develop the mindset to never give up; and to win! Go, Tigers!”
A big thank you to Bosco Tech alumnus and professional basketball player Tyler Polo(‘06) for coming out to our game against Verbum Dei! Tyler, a 6’7” forward, is currently playing for El Salvador’s Metapan team; prior to that he played for Puerto Rico’s Guaynabo and Mayaguez teams.
The Tech’s talented and hardworking team of Associate Student Body officers is dedicated to bettering the high school experience for their classmates through activities and creating bonding opportunities.. Each officer recently was asked to share a little about their role within ASB, a fun fact or favorite hobby, and explain what they’re learning about in their respective technologies at this time.

Members of the Tech’s National Honor Society traveled to Fresno on January 7 to help farm workers and their families, based in campasinos, at the start of the New Year. Our students donated, collected, sorted, and distributed clothing, blankets, and essentials for the families, and toys for the children.
“Going to Fresno was an incredibly rewarding experience for myself and for the rest of the students on the trip,” said senior Ian Kalvinskas. “Being there in person was especially important to me as I feel that the face -to-face service made our goal more personal. Playing with the children and entertaining them with games prior to handing out the toys helped me realize that the service was about much more than the tangible service of donating clothes, toiletries, and toys; it was about providing these families with a day where they can be taken care of. In a world where so much is constantly stacked against them, the parents got to relax and the kids were able to be kids, all thanks to the generosity of the Bosco Tech and San Gabriel Mission communities.”
The Bosco Tech community is extremely grateful for all recent donations made by generous foundations, organizations and alumni. Among those gifts:
Name Amount Purpose
George H. Mayr Foundation
$15,000 Scholarships
Esperanza Foundation (Ronald & Teresa Mostero) $10,000 Annual Fund
