Dear Tech family--
First, let me say thank you! Thank you to the many generous members of our Tech community for so graciously supporting our fall appeal--your response to the recent request has been overwhelming and we are grateful!
To those who haven’t had a chance to contribute, please visit boscotech.edu/giving. In this season of giving thanks, we are grateful for you; you all are a major blessing to the Tech!
Across the campus, I see student groups with the same hearts of giving. Food and clothing drives, Christmas tree donations, homeless veterans’ support--our students embody an unmistakenly genuine generosity. They are an inspiration!
Following tradition, our freshmen recently were presented with their Bosco Tech class ties at the traditional Mass & Tie Ceremony. Seeing family members, friends, upperclassmen and faculty support these young men and cheer them on fortified Fr. Damien’s homily message reminding these young men that they will never walk alone; someone will always have their back. What an important and strengthening reminder in both their educational journey and walk of faith.
As we move into the holiday season and the start of the new year, I pray that your family will be richly blessed in the coming months. May your sons do well on their upcoming first semester final exams and may they thrive in their studies and endeavors in 2026. During the holidays, I hope that your family is able to enjoy time together and that each of us can find a few minutes of quiet reflection and thankfulness for all our blessings!

The Tech’s Open House was a huge success, thanks in no small part to our students, alumni, faculty and staff, and parent volunteers for helping us share all the school has to offer.
For the first time, we were able to welcome prospective female students and their families; in total, hundreds of potential students and their families visited and learned all about our technology programs, internship opportunities, AP and honors curriculum, and extracuricular activities.
Thank you to all our parent volunteers, faculty, staff and students who made it a successful

Kudos to all the Techmen who put on their running shoes and joined us for the annual alumni race on Nov. 1.
Running alongside the current cross country team, the alumni more than held their own—Philip Fanara (MS ’01) crossed the finish line ahead of all other alumni and right after just a few current team members!

The Tech’s Japanese Language 3 class recently made traditional tofu rice cake in class. They made the delicacy with a mixture of tofu and rice flour and then boiled them in a pot. How proud they are and how much they enjoyed this delicious treat!

Please join us at the January 14 basketball home game when we will honor Tech legend Wayne Engelstad (PH ‘85).
Wayne is a two-time All American who helped the Tech’s 1984 Division I team shoot to #12 in the nation with his skill, averaging 25.3 points per game. He went on to play in the NBA and in Europe’s Continental Basketball Association, as well as in Argentina and Australia.
Everyone is invited to the Jan. 14 game and tribute!
If you or a Techman friend is not hearing about upcoming alumni events, please make sure we have your current contact information. Visit www.boscotech.edu/alumni/info.

“WHAT
BY MRS. ANNE SIGOLOFF
At November’s Internship Lunch & Learn session, Bosco Tech juniors discovered invaluable tools to help them identify and explore career paths that match their personalities, values, interests and skillsets. In addition, they learned about helpful assessments like the Meyers Brigg’s personality test, interest inventories and career surveys.
The highlight of the meeting was hearing first hand from Tech alum Grayson Wade (ACE ‘18), 2018 co-valedictorian, who shared practical advice, internship success tips and scholarship resources with the ambitious group.

He reassured students that at their age, it is not unusual to be unsure what you want to do professionally, encouraging them to get as much hands-on experience as possible through internships, fellowships, research positions and volunteer work in the summer and school year to help find your way.
He described his trajectory to currently earning a Master’s Degree in statistics and machine learning at the Claremont Graduate University. During his years at the Tech, Grayson was a member of ACE exploring civil engineering as a possible career. In 2018, he interned at Reyes Construction, Inc. in the field and office, and while he did not pursue civil engineering, he gained valuable skills he still benefits from like the use of Excel spreadsheets, problem solving and customer service.
Intrigued by mathematics since his youth, Grayson ultimately decided to major in applied math and earned a BS in Applied Mathematics from Cal Poly Pomona. Paid internships at The White House Office of Management and Budget and at the Naval Research Enterprise Internship confirmed his interest in the field.
When interning, Grayson encouraged students to pay special attention to networking and getting to know co-workers. Making time to go out to lunch, enjoying a birthday gathering or social event hosted by the company are equally important to learning and mastering new technical skills. He shared an experience at his Naval Research Enterprise Internship where he almost turned down a lunch invitation to finish a project early, when his co-worker persuaded him to join the group for a meal out, as it is “what interns are expected to do!”
After the internship concluded, he applied for a scholarship offered by the Navy to attend graduate school. It turns out the colleague who insisted he go to lunch that summer, provided him with a stellar recommendation. He won the full scholarship plus a generous stipend to attend Claremont Graduate University pursuing Master of Science in Statistics & Machine Learning, which he expects to complete next May. He then has a job waiting for him at The Department of the Navy – Naval Surface Warfare Center in Corona, CA. Juniors,

“WHAT
take note; “go out to lunch and enjoy birthday cake with your colleagues, you never know where it will take you!”
Thank you, Grayson, for your practical advice and insights about your career expedition. We can’t wait to hear what‘s next on your itinerary!

When Bosco Tech alumnus Michael O’Reilly (EL ’75) heard about the school’s transition to a coeducational program, his thoughts immediately turned to his mother.
Born to Italian immigrant parents who owned a small fiveacre farm in Stevens, South Dakota, during the agricultural collapse of the 1920s, Carmella Mary Salviola O’Reilly never had the chance to pursue higher education. A dedicated student with dreams of becoming an English teacher, she set aside her aspirations to help support her family.
“Her desire for education carried over to me, her only child, whom she raised as a single parent from the age of nine,” Mike recalled. “Through her efforts, I was able to attend DBTI and receive an outstanding engineering foundation that not only led to excellent employment but also prepared me for university life. I attribute much of my professional success to my mother’s spirit and the excellent experience of attending DBTI.”

After graduating from Bosco Tech, Mike attended UCLA and UC Irvine earning BSEE and MS Engineering degrees and completing post graduate management studies. An electrical design engineer, he enjoyed a long career in systems engineering and executive management before retiring in 2019 as a VP-General Manager at a Florida-based defense firm.
Throughout her life, Carmella embodied and modeled for Mike common sense, integrity, and a strong moral compass—values she passed on to her son and later to his children. “She was absolutely tireless in helping family members in need,” he added.
Now, in her honor, Mike and his wife, Sandy O’Reilly, are extending that same spirit of generosity to future Tech students. They have established the Carmella M. O’Reilly Memorial Scholarship Endowed Fund, which will provide annual awards to deserving female students who demonstrate financial need, academic excellence, and good citizenship.

“It’s in her spirit—despite the many challenges she faced—that this fund is established,” Mike said. “We want future generations of young women to have access to the outstanding education and ethical teachings that Bosco Tech provides.”
He added, “My mom would be so pleased to know that
(Continued on next page)

young ladies will be supported in their educational journey in her honor. It’s an investment in the future that reflects the goodness of someone who so deeply valued a Tech education.”
Thank you, Mike and Sandy, for commemorating Mrs. O’Reilly in such a profound and lasting way!

The hard work of Tech students recently made the KABC 7 News! KABC and the Columbia Memorial Space Center mentioned the dedication of the Tech restoration student team--the only high school involved in the complex task of completely renovating and restoring the prototype Space Shuttle ! The team was shown in a close up of the far-left photo.

Werecentlycaughtupwiththeseactivestudentstoaskthem:whytheyareinvolvedintheCoreTeam, theirgoalsfortheteamthisschoolyearandwhattheyhopetoaccomplishonbehalfoftheentire studentbody.

Co-President Ricardo Martinez (ACE ‘26)--My name is Ricardo Martinez, and I am one of the co-presidents for this year’s Core Team. My job involves overseeing all faith-based activities and coordinating with each committee on potential opportunities for the future. I am excited to work on new projects that are currently being developed and grow in faith with my Salesian brothers.
Co-President Gianni Carrano (CSEE ‘26)--Hi! I’m Gianni Carrano and I am a co-president for the youth ministry this year! I am a senior and really hope to use my experience to bring the newer students of Bosco Tech into the Salesian faith. I want to do this through keeping our school faith oriented and living out my Salesianity in my own life. I love bringing the values to my community and hope others can spread it once I graduate too!

Liturgy Committee Leader Ethan De La Cruz (MSET ‘26)--My name is Ethan De La Cruz and as liturgy head, I help produce all the Masses here at the Tech. I find this very important to me as these Masses serve as sacred times where kids and staff can get closer to God and be with Him, celebrating His love and His good word. But also helping make these Masses opens opportunities to develop team building and public speaking. But more importantly you find a sense of family within the Youth Ministry and God.
Liturgy Committee Leader Eivar Zepeda (BMET ‘27)--My name is Eivar Zepeda, and I am one of the heads of the Liturgy Committee. The role of the Liturgy Committee is to help organize and prepare school Masses so that they are meaningful and reverent experiences for everyone. For example, I have helped coordinate and plan the school liturgies that bring students together in worship. My goal for this year’s Liturgy Committee is to encourage others to actively participate in Mass and to grow in their relationship with God.

Prayer and Worship Committee Leader Branden Rosales (MSET ‘26)--My name is Branden Rosales, and I’m one of the heads of the committee Prayer and Worship. What the roles of Prayer and Worship is to create successful reconciliations and prayer services. For example, I hosted the last reconciliation that all theology classes attended with the students. My goal for this year’s Prayer and Worship committee is to encourage others to bring unity with God and to bring themselves closer to

God. Another one of my goals is to bring the school community closer together and help people experience the impact of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer and Worship Committee Leader Cristian Mojica (CSEE ‘28)--Hello there! I’m Cristian Mojica, one of the heads for prayer and worship in Youth Ministry. I have been serving in Youth Ministry for my entire time at Bosco, and I am really excited about continuing to improve the program and bring the faith aspect of our oratory to the student life. I want to incorporate our prayer into our school so that we can be Salesian by deed and name. I hope prayer and worship can impact you as much as it has me!
Retreat Committee Leader Massimo Sorce (ACE ‘26)--My name is Massimo Sorce, and I am in charge of retreats. Each year, each grade year has the opportunity to attend a retreat, which is an important time to step away from our everyday routines and focus on faith, reflection, and building stronger relationships with one another. Along with planning these yearly retreats, I am also beginning to find opportunities for our Core Team to go out and serve others through charity work, such as volunteering at food banks and helping those in need. I believe these experiences are just as meaningful because they allow us to live out our faith in action and make a positive impact beyond our own community.

Retreat Committee Leader Ryan Hernandez (MAT ‘26)--Hello, my name is Ryan Hernandez, and some things to know about me is that I love comics and video games. I handle the retreat section with my classmate Massimo. I hope to bring memorable moments for the retreats and bring each one of us closer to each other as brothers. My goal this year is to make the retreats fun and encouraging for other techmen.
Character Assembly Committee Leader Julian Santana (MSET ‘26)--My name is Julian Santana, and I am co-leading for this year’s Character Assemblies. A big part of why I joined the team is because I feel like the experience of witnessing God’s grace and love should be shared with everyone, especially our Bosco Tech brothers. As a vital part of this committee, my mission is to remind everyone, not just my fellow brothers, that there’s always an opportunity to grow and that God will be alongside that growth every step of the way. I hope to see all of our brothers and sisters grow to be the best version of themselves, and by being on this team, I can contribute to that mission.

Character Assembly Committee Leader Sebastian Rosas-Garcia (IDEA ‘28)--My name is Sebastian Rosas-Garcia, serving as the lead for this year’s Character Assembly. I joined the team because I want to share the love of God that I experience whenever I am surrounded by my Bosco brothers or just serving my community. As part of this

committee, our goal is to provide opportunities for students to grow in faith, develop strong values, and strengthen our community through prayer and reflection. I pray that we have a successful year and make Bosco a place where we feel at home, can learn, have fun, and follow God. Amen.
Publicity Committee Leader Tristan Ting Torres (BMET ‘26)--Youth Ministry was my introduction to the school, all the way back to when in my freshman year I went and joined our choir and started my time in Youth Ministry. My mission has been simple from the start, to be working in order to increase the faith and strength of our brotherhood. Not only of the school, but of our whole community. I have been blessed to be given the privilege to join Core Team to continue that mission during my senior year bringing the Oratory into our community. I’ll say it as I said as an Executive, join Youth Ministry to help your brothers and incoming sisters join the Oratory!

Acutians Leader Nathan Gomez (‘29)--My name is Nathan Gomez, and I am the president and founder of the Acutians. This year, I wanted to start something new and special for Catholic youth, so I created the Acutians, based on the very first millennial saint and patron saint of the internet. We focus on Catholic evangelization through the internet and follow St. Carlos Acutis and his example of his life to love God and adore Him with everything, even the internet.
Sound Committee Leader Gabriel Somarriba (MSET ‘26)--My name is Gabriel Somarriba, and I’m the head of the Sound committee. The role of the Sound committee is to set up audio systems such as microphones, speakers, cords, mic stands, etc. for events like masses and assemblies. Some goals I have for the committee is to make events more efficient in setup. Another goal I have is to make sure that the audio runs well throughout the entire event.

The Tech is thrilled to officially welcome to the family the future graduating class of 2029! Family and friends, faculty and upperclassmen honored these young men at the annual Freshman Mass & Tie Ceremony, prior to Open House, on Nov. 16.
Each receiving a tool box, symbolic of the tools they will be equipped with in the coming four years, the ninth graders donned their new class ties, helped with the tying by family members and friends. The students were reminded during Fr. Damien’s homily that they will never face challenges alone and will always have support.
We love our freshman class and pray for God’s blessing on you in your educational journey!

BY DR. CAROLINA SCHMEISSER
Spanish Language students from several grade levels created altars to commemorate El Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead). Each class had a specific theme.
• The A3 period Spanish I class created an altar honoring the victims of the Vargas Tragedy in Venezuela in 1999, a disaster caused by massive floods and mudslides triggered by torrential rains that swept through Vargas State, killing an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 people.

• The A4 period Spanish I class created an altar dedicated to undocumented immigrant victims who have died in various circumstances around the world while trying to start a better life.
• The B2 period Spanish II class created a project altar honoring the victims of the earthquake that struck Mexico on September 19, 1985. The earthquake had a magnitude of 8.1 and resulted in an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 deaths.
• The B3 period, Spanish III class created a project altar to commemorate the victims who died during the Salvadoran Civil War (1980–1992).
• The B4 period, Spanish II class created a project honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks in the United States.
The objective of the projects was to commemorate the different ways people have lost their lives, while also showcasing the cultures and traditions of each country. The altars included traditional elements such as photos of the deceased, candles, offerings, personal belongings, religious symbols, food and flowers between others.

Congratulations to Tech senior Andrew Phaneuf (IDEA ’26), who recently earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.
For his Eagle project, Andy partnered with Project Linus, organizing the creation and collection of handmade blankets for children who are seriously ill or have experienced trauma. Through his efforts, he collected and donated 140 cozy blankets.
“I chose to work with Project Linus because I felt it was a way I could genuinely make a difference and make people feel special on a personal level,” Andy said. “I hope that when those children receive their blankets, they are not only warmed physically, but also consoled and comforted on the inside.”

An active member of San Marino’s Boy Scout Troop 357, Andy began his Scouting journey in first grade as a Tiger. Over the years, he earned 46 merit badges, completed 129 service hours, spent 52 nights camping, and hiked 52 miles. He has held several leadership roles—including Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and troop bugler (thanks to his years in band with Mr. Sam Hankins!). He also attended three high-adventure camps and fully embraced the Scouting values of preparation, service, and leadership.

The rank of Eagle Scout—the highest in Scouts BSA—is awarded only after meeting rigorous requirements in leadership, service, and outdoor skills, culminating in a significant service project. Fewer than six percent of all youth in Scouting achieve this honor.

Major congratulations to the Tiger Cross Country varsity team took second place overall at the recent Del Rey League Finals!
Tech junior Evan Cipriani-Takeuchi and sophomore Noah Villanueva earned first team All Del Rey League awards, finishing in fifth and sixth place overall. And the team qualified for the CIF SS Preliminaries. Go, Tigers!

The Tech’s fall appeal has been mailed to donors and alumni; this year’s theme is “Built by Tech.” For so many, their years at the Tech shaped the adults they’ve become. Personal and professional choices have been influenced by lessons learned here--chief among them: to give back, to step up, to be the difference they want to see.
Featuring three involved alumni, including Mr. Rudy “H” Herrera, we tell the story of their commitment to giving back, based on what was built in them by Bosco Tech. Bosco Tech’s award-winning Music Director has done it again. Congratulations to the talented Mr. Sam Hankins who recently earned two presitigious awards for his music by the InterContinental Music Awards.
Mr. Hankins’ band, the Sam Hankins Project, was named winner of the Best Song of North America in the contemporary music genre! Individually, Mr. Hankins was named a finalist in the same category for his recording “Why Not,” based on originality and performance. The Los Angeles-based InterContinental Music Awards organization evaluates music from a global and ethical perspective. It is considered one of the most inclusive and diverse music competitions. Congratulations to Mr. Hankins!

All students will be taking technology and academic final exams Dec. 15-19. This is a chance for students to demonstrate their knowledge of all the content in each of their classes. Final exams are usually cumulative, meaning that these tests will cover material going back to the first day of school.
Beginning immediately, students should start preparing for finals by organizing class study materials and understanding their schedule for each of the exam days. If they are in a sport or club, ask about the scheduled practices and meetings during finals and Christmas Break. Also, students should ask their teachers about help sessions, both before and during finals week. Parents can help to motivate and monitor students while they prepare for their exams, and in planning drop offs and pickups for each day of finals.

• Technology Finals (Mon. and Tues., Dec. 15 and 16) Regular daily class schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 3:05 p.m.
• Academic Finals (Wed. through Fri.., Dec. 17-19) Early dismissal schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Please check your email for a more detailed description of the daily schedules, including which days each subject will hold their final exam.
During the fall semester, all freshmen rotate through three technologies. On Saturday, December 13, during the Technology Selection Day event, they will pick one technology as their major for the remainder of their time here at Bosco Tech. Appointments start at 8:30 a.m. on that day; families will be sent an appointment time, with details, before that date. In addition to their technology, the ninth graders will be selecting their sophomore-year World Language and Fine Arts courses. All appointments will take place in the Administration Building and Library. Check your mail for your son’s appointment time and information letter. Questions? Please contact Mr. Eric Tom, Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, at etom@boscotech.edu. While you are on campus that day, stop by the Holiday Boutique in Tech Hall beginning at 8 a.m. Lots of festive food offered by our athletic boosters (including a pancake breakfast at 8) and one-of-a-kind gifts for everyone on your list!

Please refer to the school’s general calendar regarding the hours of office operations during the Christmas break. While the office will be open, there are modifications to daily hours and holidays for all staff.

“Through this role, I have gained experience building, activating, and maintaining a variety of pneumatic and cryogenic systems that directly support our launch vehicle, New Glenn,” Devin said. “In addition to the construction and ongoing maintenance of these systems, I serve as a primary ground pneumatics operator during test and launch campaigns, utilizing critical thinking and fast decision making in a high stress environment. Outside of these campaigns, I am the responsible engineer of the ambient and cryogenic helium and nitrogen systems at the pad.”

So cool! Go, Techman!

MSET juniors were recently treated to a visit from Mr. Alejandro Martinez’s colleagues at Curtiss-Wright, an international manufacturer of integrated systems for the aerospace, defense, and energy industries. Founded in 1929 by aviation pioneers Glenn Curtiss and the Wright brothers, the company has a long history of innovation.

During the visit, students learned about industry applications of a specialized polymer called Parylene. The Curtiss-Wright team also highlighted the growing career opportunities in additive manufacturing and engineering, noting that the field continues to expand and offers strong earning potential.
Students were also introduced to the emerging “nuclear renaissance,” a renewed global effort to build next-generation nuclear reactors to meet increasing energy demands. Notably, one of Curtiss-Wright’s largest divisions—its nuclear division—is located nearby in Brea.
A special thank you to Mr. Martinez and our Curtiss-Wright guests for providing this valuable learning experience!
