Message from the President

Dear Tech family

As you’ll read in this issue of The Gear, we recently were honored with a visit from the Salesian Rector Major, Rev. Angel Fernandez Artime, SDB, who was in the U.S. to help celebrate the 125th anniversary of the presence of Salesians in this country. Don Angel is considered the tenth successor to St. John Bosco.

As he toured the campus and met with students and faculty, I was understandably proud of our Tech community and its members. They graciously welcomed our special guest, gave him a campus tour, and even enjoyed a lively and memorable singalong with him. He told students that he was moved and most impressed by the sense of brotherhood that he felt among the student body. Before he departed, Don Angel prayed a very special blessing over our students and their families.

His visit was a great reminder that our campus community is connected to a worldwide Salesian family and part of a vital ministry committed to positively changing lives and imparting faith. And for that, we are extremely grateful!

By now, you will have received this fall’s Tech Fund appeal in the mail. The Tech Fund is a pivotal way for alumni, parents, and friends of our school to give back and it helps us accomplish many important things, including:

• Keeping tuition among the most affordable in the Los Angeles area.

• Keeping our educational technology relevant and updated.

• Funding a new, revitalized college counseling program focused on college admissions and affordability.

• Staying at the forefront of extracurricular activities, including Athletics, Sports and Robotics.

As you know, like the vast majority of independent and Catholic schools, Tech tuition does not cover the full cost to educate a student. The difference between that actual cost and tuition is known as “the gap.” Our technologies nearly double this cost, as well. That’s why your support is so crucial for our programs to thrive.

I ask that you prayerfully consider donating today. Your tax-deductible donation can be made safely and conveniently through the school’s website: boscotech.edu/ giving/techfund

Thank you for your generous spirit; may God richly bless you and your loved ones during this holy season and in the coming new year!

Merry Christmas, Memo Gutierrez (AU ‘83) President

Worldwide Salesian Rector Major Visits the Tech

What an amazing day we had with the Salesian Rector Major, Rev. Angel Fernandez Artime, SDB, who was in the U.S. to help celebrate the 125th anniversary of the presence of Salesians in this country; he is the tenth successor to St. John Bosco and the head of all ministries of the Salesians of Don Bosco worldwide (over 130 countries and 15,000 institutions).

Don Angel toured the campus, had lunch with students, faculty and staff, and was the guest of honor at an assembly where we enjoyed an enthusiastic singalong. Don Angel ended his visit by praying a blessing over the Tech family! Thank you, Don Angel!

The Tech’s own Nicholas Garcia (MAT), who represents California, Nevada, and Hawaii on the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry’s (NFCYM) National Youth Advisory Council, spoke to thousands at mid November’s NCYC conference held at the Long Beach Convention Center. The appointed council is dedicated to empowering young people to use their voices and gifts as members of the Church. Nicholas, an honor student and talented photographer who is part of the council's social media team, loaned his skills by taking photos of the event, too.

Kidz Feeding Kidz Thanksgiving Food Drive —Students Exceed Goal of Providing Dinners

Thank you to all who generously donated to the Kidz Feeing Kidz Thanksgiving food drive and great job to the students who made it happen: (left to right) Brandon Lee (MAT '26), Joseph Lee (IDEA '24), Gabriel Morales (BMET '24), Nicolas Adalin (future Techman) and Nolan Adalin (BMET '25).

Through the gracious support of many, and with the help of Mr. Brendan Chua, Mr. Rudy Herrera, Mr. John Garcia, and MAT students, in particular, the group exceeded their goal of preparing and distributing 15 Thanksgiving meals to local families in need. They actually were able to provide complete meals, including turkeys, for 18 families associated with the East Los Angeles Community Youth Center’s afterschool children’s program where several Tech students volunteer.

Hands on science four Bosco Tech students Andrei De La Cruz (BMET ’24), Saif Halari (MAT ’24), Gabriel Morales (BMET ’24), and Matthew Castaneda (BMET ‘25) had the amazing opportunity to participate in a one day internship at the Pasadena Bio Collaborative Incubator (PBC) in mid November.

Through their work with the PBC team, they produced and performed quality control on 300 media plates, electrophoresis buffers, sterile aliquots and other supplies for Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) kits used in DNA instruction in local high school science labs. The day’s mentors included individuals from bio tech companies CellVi, Impossible Metals, A2 Biotherapeutics, Pasadena Bio, and Amgen Biotech Experience, as well as mentors from UCLA, UC Davis, Pasadena City College and CSULA’s L.A. County High School for the Arts.

Youth Ministry Core Team

Putting Faith into Action

The Tech’s dedicated Core Team is committed to campus ministry and furthering the sense of brotherhood through a variety of means. They recently were asked to share why they originally joined Core Team, what their hopes are for Core Team’s efforts this academic year, and what projects they’ve been involved in in their leadership role.

Jose Alvarez (CSEE ‘23) Core Team Committee Prayer and Worship. I joined Core Team because I loved the experience during this year’s freshmen retreat and wanted to be involved. My hope for this year’s Core Team is to be the best we can be so that we can create great memories for the student body. I have participated in every Mass this year and I also ran the reconciliation service.

Matthew Castaneda (BMET ‘25) Core Team Committee Prayer and Worship. I joined to be more involved in my school and faith and connect with my peers. My hope is to help bring joy to our school in any way I can. I’ve participated in the Salesian Experience.

Daniel Cendejas (ACE ‘25) Core Team Committee Character Assembly. I joined Core Team because, in my freshman year, I saw the people helping out at the Mass and character assemblies and I realized that I wanted to help as well. My hopes for this year for Core Team is to show the freshman what I saw in my freshman year. I hope we can make the Masses as good as last year and better. I have participated in the character assemblies and helped set up and altar serve at the Mass.

Samuel Cendejas (BMET ‘24) Core Team Committee I am Core Team secretary so I am in the Office Committee. I joined Core Team because I wanted to do something related to God and help the community. My hope for this year is to have all of our events go really well and expand our numbers. I’ve participated in the Triduum Mass and character assemblies this year.

Ephraim Joseph De La Cruz (CSEE ‘23) Core Team Committee Character Assembly. I took this opportunity as a way to serve both God and my school simultaneously. I hope to see Youth Ministry become completely self-sufficient as a student-led organization. I have been a member of the Character Assemblies Committee.

Diego Enriquez (MSET ‘23) Core Team Committee Character Assembly. I saw Miguel and other classmates doing it online during the 2020 2021 school year, and wanted to do it myself at the start of junior year. This year, I hope to continue having a presence in Core Team while also accomplishing everything else on my list. This school year, I worked on the previous character assembly, ran a reconciliation service, and helped set up and tear down the Triduum celebration. Last school year, I helped with the freshman retreat, the sophomore retreat, and did work during the junior retreat. I helped out with every character assembly, and even emceed one. I ran at least three reconciliation services as the MC, was the head for Triduum Mass 2021 and I was a small group leader at the Freshman Summer Program.

Owen Frayre (MAT ‘23) Core Team Committee Prayer and Worship. During sophomore year, I joined the Core Team to help others develop their faith. Through the services we held at Bosco, I felt my faith grew stronger, and I wanted to be a part of it. This year, I hope to host Mass services that strengthen our faith while also incorporating new things. During my leadership experience, I have helped plan Masses, reconciliation services, and Junior Ring Ceremonies. Additionally, I attended events such as the St. Patrick's Day event where the Bishop attended.

Michael Garcia (MAT ‘23) Core Team Committee Retreat. I joined Core Team to contribute more to the Bosco Community and get a better understanding of the new and old people in our school. My hope for this year is to be incredibly effective and efficient, putting a piece of ourselves into every event we do. I’ve participated in the 2021 and 2022 freshman retreats and 2021 sophomore retreat.

Nicholas Garcia (MAT ‘24) Core Team Committees Retreat, Public Relations. I became involved so I can help the ministry at my church and now at my school. It’s my hope that we can get more productive and help set a strong foundation for next year’s team. I’ve been involved with reconciliations, Masses, and retreats.

Kanoa Gomez (MAT ‘23) Core Team Committee Retreat. I originally joined Core Team to strengthen my faith, but stayed because I found so much more. Core Team became a family. I joined seeking a role in something important at Bosco Tech, and found so much more. I truly hope that our senior class leaves an impactful and meaningful legacy within Core Team. I hope our leadership establishes a mark to be lived up to by all members afterwards. I hope Core Team becomes better every year, especially with this being our last year here at Bosco, I hope we can plan our last events smoothly, and make memories doing so. I participated in the last two freshman retreats and the sophomore retreat.

Miguel Angel Martinez (MSET ‘23) Core Team Committee Co President of Core Team. I joined Core Team because I wanted to be able to help the student body get closer to the brotherhood. As the current co president, my goal is to make sure everything is on board. My hope for this school year is to be able to prosper as a leader and inspire others to be a leader like me. As co president, I oversee what is happening.

Matthew Phillips (MAT ‘23) Core Team Committees Prayer and Worship. I felt like I needed to give something to the Bosco Tech community, and Core Team was the way to do that. I hope we carry on and fulfill the oratory of Bosco Tech, creating a supportive and fun community. I mainly created PowerPoints for Masses, set up for general events, as well as created petitions for services and Masses.

Aidan Pico (BMET ‘23) Core Team Committees Prayer and Worship. I joined Core Team to serve, to spread the Gospel, and to grow in my faith. Starting freshmen year, I wanted to help our ministry by altar serving at our Masses. Over time, I got to meet upperclassmen and that's when I heard about Core Team. I learned about how they organize Masses, character assemblies, and prayer services, which was something that I was interested in being a part of. I’ve helped setup and cleanup many services over time and I am

proud to say that I’m happy doing this with and for my Bosco brothers. I hope to make a fun, comfortable, and faithful school year. Through the events formed by Core Team, I hope to serve others and make this year memorable. I’ve participated in the first day of school Mass, reconciliation services, Triduum Mass, and retreats.

Nicholas Quezada (IDEA ‘23) Core Team Committee Retreat. I got involved to help provide and continue the unique spirit of Don Bosco's ministry. It’s my hope to make a lasting impact on the Bosco Tech community and continue the spirit of Don Bosco's legacy. I participated in the freshman, sophomore, and junior retreats, setup and takedown for character assembly and Mass.

Juan Pablo Rodriguez (ACE ‘24) Core Team Committee Character Assembly. I wanted to join core team so I can be of help to the school and our community. I always thought that the way core team sets up character assembly’s and other events is really cool and I wanted to do the same. My hope is to bring successful events to the school and be of help to our core team leaders I have participated in Masses and I help set up for them.

Andrew Samperio (MSET ‘23) Core Team Committees Retreat, Character Assembly and Outside Secretary. I joined Core Team to help students strengthen their faith and become closer to God. My hope for this year is to help build a stronger community through our faith as a family. I’ve participated in the freshman summer retreat, character assemblies, and school Masses.

Johann Tiangco (MAT ‘23) Core Team Committees Co President of Core Team, Office, Prayer and Worship. I joined Core Team during the pandemic in my summer before junior year. I saw how other students would be active and play a role in the school and I wanted to do the same. I wanted to be a student leader and have a bigger positive impact in the school. I saw Core Team as an opportunity to grow and learn from the best leaders in school. My faith grew as I learned something new each day. My hope for Core Team is just to be better at what we do. I want each and every event this year to be the best it can be. Since this is my last year, I want our events to be special, but also still hold the core values of home, church, school, and playground to give the oratory to the student body. I have participated in many activities from character assemblies, to reconciliation services, to Masses, etc.

Jason Tran (CSEE ‘23) Core Team Committee Office Committee. I joined Core Team to help and continue the ministry at Bosco Tech. Leading our school in Masses, character assemblies, and prayer services. I want to be able to give my knowledge back to the community we have at the Tech. This year, I hope for every event that we do, we get as much involvement as we can and are able to share the gifts that we are given. The Projects I have participated in are the Triduum Mass, reconciliation service, and Breakfast at the Cathedral with Archbishop Gomez.

Theodore Truong (MSET ‘23) Core Team Committee Office. I joined Core Team because I wanted to be involved and give back to the school through its events and I have been using Core Team as a hub to do so. My hope this year for Core Team is that I can help enlighten younger classmen to be closer to God or at least be willing to open up to the idea of Him, as long as they are able to grow and learn from what I put out through Core Team

in its liturgies, assemblies, and services. Prior to the school year, I was one of four leaders to help lead and organize the Freshmen Salesian Experience Retreat for about 80 freshmen with the involvement of about 40 upper classmen volunteers. Throughout the school year, I have planned the first character assembly and participated in the first liturgy of the school year as the first reading lector.

Santiago Vargas (ACE ‘23) Core Team Committee Prayer and Worship. I joined because faith has always been a big role in my life and being involved in it is something that I always want to do during my life. Cross Country Nears End of Successful Season —TwoAthletes Go to CIF

The final part of our season began with our traditional Alumni Race on October 29 at the Tech flag pole. It was a two-mile race along the streets surrounding campus. The runners were returning Cross Country alumni running in spirited competition with our current team. The alumni were thoroughly vanquished by the first nine finishers who were all from our current JV and Varsity teams. The top three finishers were senior Christian Perez, sophomore Daniel Cendejas, and senior Anthony Battaglia, while starting with 10th place, the top three alumni were

On November 1, we traveled to Hollydale Park in South Gate for the Del Rey League finals. Our JV team finished second in the league with five of our runners in the top ten, all making First Team, All League. Our Varsity team finished fourth, with two athletes finishing in the top ten, making First Team, All League: sophomore Danny Cendejas, who finished sixth, with a time of 15:38, becoming the second best sophomore in school history, and senior Christian Perez finishing third, who had the best school finish since 2014. Both received CIF patches and qualified for CIF Prelims. This ended our regular season which started with only four athletes with times under 20 minutes for three miles, but finished with 18 under 20. Quite a comeback recovering from COVID at the season start.

A cold, early November 12 morning at Mt. SAC in Walnut was the setting for Christian and Danny’s separate races at the CIF Southern Section Prelims. There, they hoped to qualify for the finals a week later. In his race, Danny finished fourteenth with a new Mt. SAC personal record (PR) of 16:43. Christian finished seventh in his race in 15:49, becoming the first Bosco runner to qualify for the CIF SS Finals since 2014. His new Mt. SAC PR beat his

previous by a spectacular 51 seconds!

Our quest for the state championship in Fresno reached its most challenging point on November 19 at the CIF SS Finals at Mt. SAC. To qualify for state a week later, our remaining runner, senior Christian Perez had to do two things: one, finish in the top 20; he finished 19th, and two, be in the top 5 of the individual runners (those not running with their team). He came in seventh, barely missing qualification. Although this was a disappointment for him, this was a great accomplishment and we’re all incredibly proud of his efforts. Getting to the finals, he outran hundreds of runners in the many schools that compete in the Southern California CIF. In his race were many of the top runners in the state and the 5 top schools in the state. Mt. SAC is considered the toughest course in the U.S. We’re all proud of Christian, as well as the entire team. Next year we’ll make state!

Under the guidance of Dr. Tony Arguelles and parent chaperones, Tech students enjoyed the cultures of Italy and Spain during a ten day trip in November. Bienvenido y bentornato, gentiluomini!

Fall & Winter Sports Update

Dear Bosco Tech School Community,

As we come together to celebrate our fall season, I want to say thank you to all the student athletes, parents, coaches, boosters, for all of their support, dedication, energy and hard work. I enjoyed seeing our student athletes trying their best and competing against fierce competition in both cross country and football.

The cross country team had two runners that placed in the top six in the Del Rey League. Senior Christian Perez finished in third place and sophomore Daniel Cendejas finished in sixth place. By finishing in the top six, these two runners qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Prelims! The course at the legendary Hilmer Lodge at Mt. SAC. Christian finished in 7th place with a time of 15:49. He was able to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Finals taking place on Nov. 19, again at Mt. SAC.

Our Football program made history on Oct. 27 by hosting the first ever night varsity football game in school history! The spectator size that night was over 700! It was amazing to see parents, students, alumni, faculty, staff, Salesian community and administration supporting our varsity football program. A lot of parents, supporters, and alumni informed me that this was such a wonderful experience for our school community. I want to say thank you again to these groups: to the administration for making this possible, football boosters with all the field setup, concession, redeeming ticket takers for GoFan and for parking, maintenance staff for all of their behind the scenes, Mr. Herrera for the PA system, Mr. Hankins for the great job that our marching band did, Coach Casanova and our cheer team!

All four pillars of St. John Bosco’s oratory was showcased that night: home, church, school and playground! As a school community our bond was strengthened through this experience! I will always remember and cherish this historic event in our school history! This experience will bring our school community closer together through our Salesian Oratory model of St. John Bosco!

Winter sports have started this past week. Both our soccer and basketball programs have been working hard during the summer and the fall to prepare for their winter seasons.

Our soccer program is led by second year varsity Head Coach Michael Mojarro. Junior Ivan Manzanilla and senior Nicholas Gomez are coming into this season with Second Team All League status. Under Coach Mojarro’s leadership and guidance, our soccer team is looking forward to a good preseason season and do well in the Santa Fe league schedule. Coach Mojarro's main team goal is to make the CIF playoffs and for his student athletes to have an enjoyable experience.

The basketball program is led by Coach Michael Romo (PT ‘10). Coach Romo is entering his fifth season as head varsity basketball coach. He has lead our Tigers to back to back quarterfinals (2021 Quarterfinalist in Division 5A and 2022 Quarterfinalist in Division 5AA). This season, CIF has placed our basketball team in the same division as last season. This year's basketball team is led by sophomores Darius Benitez and Jaden Erami. Both were All CIF last year as a freshman and All League. In addition, junior Ryan Osborne will be an impact player on both sides of the court. We are hosting our winter varsity basketball tournament on Dec. 6 9. In addition, we be participating in the biggest varsity tournament in the country at the Damien Winter

I encourage you to come out and support both of our winter sport programs (all levels for basketball and soccer). Both programs are excited about the opportunity to represent the school and try their best in competition. James Luna Named Varsity Baseball Coach

It is our pleasure to introduce Mr. James Luna as the new varsity head baseball coach. Coach Luna played varsity baseball at Monrovia High School from 1998 to 2001, then went on to pitch NCAA Division I College baseball at the University of Southern California from 2002 to 2005. He graduated with a B.A. in Economics, before returning to Monrovia High School to coach baseball.

I am excited for Coach Luna to be our next head varsity baseball coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge of baseball and his recent success at Monrovia is an indication of the type of program that he plans to build here at Bosco Tech. As we got to know him, Coach Luna's passion and dedication to the game of baseball was clearly evident. He has a clear vision for the type of culture that he wants to build here at Bosco Tech.

Coach Luna started his coaching career at Monrovia, his alma mater, as the head freshman and JV baseball coach during the 2021 season. The following season, he served as the JV head baseball coach. During that time, he was also a varsity assistant coach, primarily assigned to assist the pitching staff. Monrovia went on to win Rio Hondo League titles in 2021 & 2022 with a CIF Quarterfinal appearance in 2021 & Second Round appearance in 2022.

“I look forward to working with and getting to know the student athletes at Bosco Tech,” Coach Luna says. “My goal is to create a program where they can use athletics as a way to build their confidence and skills not only in baseball, but in all aspects of life. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the hard work and dedication these students show in the classroom. I’m excited to see what they can accomplish on the baseball field. I credit my parents for instilling the strong work ethic, attention to detail and also the slight stubbornness needed to take on this role. Also, I give credit to Monrovia’s head baseball coach, Brad Blackmore, for teaching me the intricacies and dedication needed to be a successful baseball coach. It is with those experiences in mind that I look to bring a standard to Bosco Tech that fosters a competitive baseball program where good sportsmanship and respect is shown to everyone involved. Go Tigers!”

We are excited to watch the growth of the baseball program under the guidance and wisdom from Coach Luna. Go Tigers!!!
