A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome back, Tech Family!

I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed some welldeserved relaxation and quality time together over the summer.

As we embark on a new school year, please know that the Bosco Tech faculty and administration remain committed to our mission, and dedicated to partnering with you in the education and development of your sons.

We recognize that high school students today face challenges that we didn’t encounter in our own youth, particularly with the influence of technology and the growing role of artificial intelligence. Our faculty, especially our technology instructors, have been proactively researching and judiciously integrating AI into their curriculum in a way that teaches students to use this emerging tool ethically and effectively.

Our faculty has also been preemptively engaging with social psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. This New York Times bestseller documents the increasing struggles among American teens and urges action from parents, schools, and the government to restore a sense of community and security to our children.

In that light, I was pleased to see that on the Tech’s profile on Niche.com, a school ranking and review platform, 94% of our students and alumni reported feeling happy here, and 100% shared that they feel safe on campus. Rather than letting these high ratings make us complacent, they affirm that we are on the right track in fulfilling Bosco Tech’s enduring mission to sustain a campus culture that supports both our students and their families, while creating a home away from home, true to St. John Bosco’s original Oratory model.

Thank you for the part you play in helping ensure we always maintain a nurturing environment here for all our young people.

Withgratitudeforourcommunity, MemoGutierrez(AU‘83) President

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

My dear Bosco Tech family,

Welcome back, Tigers! As we open the doors to a new school year, I am filled with hope and excitement for the journey ahead with our mission that remains steadfast under St. John Bosco’s spirit: education is a matter of the heart!

Every new school year offers us a fresh start, filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and connection. This year, let us embrace the idea that each day is a chance to make a positive impact—not only in our own lives but also in the lives of others.

This year, let’s embrace the spirit of collaboration and community. Together, we will explore new ideas, tackle challenges, and inspire one another to reach our fullest potential. Remember, each moment spent at Bosco Tech is an opportunity for learning, service, and building lasting friendships.

Furthermore, this year will be an ordinary Jubilee Year of the church. The theme is “Pilgrims of Hope.” Many of us will remember the Jubilee Year 2000, especially World Youth Day in Rome, and maybe the more recent extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2016. These are moments of grace and renewal, with the opportunity of obtaining a plenary indulgence. A traditional part of a Jubilee Year is the opening of the Jubilee Door through which pilgrims pass, often on their knees, as they seek a closer union with Christ.

Merging with the church, Salesian family worldwide we have our Strenna (gift or thematic encouragment) 2025: “Anchored in Hope, pilgrim with young people.” Let us journey together in hope stressing the importance of the kindness and compassion of Don Bosco, not only within our walls, but extending to our wider community. Together, we can create a culture of hope—one that nurtures our hearts and minds.

May God bless you all and, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, may we come to Christ closely each day.

CAMPUS POLICIES

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

As we move into the new school year, please review these important guidelines. For a full description, see the Parent-Student Handbook on the school’s website.

Attendance

In the event of an absence, please notify the Attendance Office at (626) 940-2002 or attendance@boscotech.edu and leave a message on the answering service by 9 a.m. The parent/ guardian calling must state the following:      a) student’s name, year, and ID #      b) reason for the student’s absence      c) phone number where the parent/guardian may be reached during the day.

Upon returning to campus, the student must present a signed note to the attendance office stating the dates and reason for the absence. If the student was treated by a physician, he must bring a note from the doctor. The note must state: a) the date the student is permitted to return to school and b) any restrictions regarding participation in school activities such as PE, sports or technology.

Tardies

A student is tardy to school if he is not in his assigned place when the first period bell rings. If tardy, he must obtain a late slip from the Attendance Office. A note from a parent/guardian should always be presented explaining the reason for tardiness, although this does not assure the student an excused tardy. Disciplinary action will be taken if the reason for the tardy is not recognized as valid. Students are given nine excused or unexcused tardies before detentions are issued. They will begin to serve Saturday detentions after every tenth tardy. Parents will be contacted to develop a plan that will assist the student in being punctual to class. Fifteen tardies per semester are the maximum allowed before credit for the course becomes null.

Student drop offs

Parents are asked not to drop off or pick up students in the front administration parking lot because of the inherent danger this causes students on foot; instead, parents are asked to use the south parking lot to drop off/pick up students before/after school. Please observe the ‘no parking’ areas in front of the school, including the bus stop and designated emergency vehicle zones. Parents’ vehicles are never allowed on campus unless by specific permission.

FRESHMAN TECHNOLOGY SELECTION

Now that Bosco Tech’s ninth class has successfully completed the two-week Freshman Summer Program (FSP), they are gearing up for the start of the official academic year.

During the first semester, class members will spend their technology time rotating through three introductory programs of their choosing. These overview courses will inform students of the varied classes, exciting projects, and college and career opportunities associated with that technology major.

Every six weeks, parents and guardians are required to attend a special meeting with teachers, called the Technology Information Session (TIS). Please note the following dates:

TIS #1 Wednesday, Sept. 11, 6 p.m.

TIS #2 Wednesday, Oct. 23, 6 p.m., following the 5:45 p.m. Freshman College Info Meeting

TIS #3 Sun., Nov. 17, 11 a.m., in technology classrooms, following 9:30 a.m. Freshman Tie Ceremony These important meetings provide parents information about each program so the final decision in selecting a technology major involves both the parent and student.

On Saturday, December 14, each freshman and at least one parent or guardian must attend Technology Selection Day. Students will be scheduled, in order of their GPA, to be interviewed before determining their final technology choice. This important day results in the student being placed into the technology program that he will study for the next three and a half years at Bosco Tech.

Questions regarding the technology programs offered at Bosco Tech should be directed to each technology chair or Assistant Principal of Technology Luis Garza at lgarza@boscotech.edu.

ACADEMIC HELP IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE

Did you know that Bosco Tech’s Tech Support program provides individualized academic assistance available to all students seeking extra guidance or tutoring. Tech Support works throughout the semester, and can be arranged to begin at the start of the school year. It is provided by both instructors and National Honor Society members, for peerto-peer tutoring.

Tech Support is not only for those needing assistance, but for anyone looking for extra help in maintaining grades. If you have questions, please contact Mr. John Garcia at jgarcia@boscotech.edu or (626) 940-2000.

FRESHMAN SALESIAN EXPERIENCE

BY ASSISTANT YOUTH MINISTER BRAD STOLZ

When he began his ministry, St. John Bosco used the elements of Home, Church, School, and Playground in helping the orphans he gathered together. He called this the Oratory model. It was this model that our retreat leaders used in planning the retreat for the Class of 2028.

Friday, July 12 was the start of a very special day for our incoming freshmen. Instead of the usual summer school books, they entered the campus carrying pillows, sleeping bags, towels and boogie boards. As they entered, they were welcomed to their new school home by a gauntlet of upper classmen Big Brothers and small group leaders who applauded them and helped them to carry their belongings.

After attending the first half of their classes, the Home element continued with a special lunch prepared by our great chef, Mrs. Magda Gonzalez, and served by parent volunteers. When our freshmen finished the remainder of their classes, the School element had finished, and their Salesian Experience began in earnest. Gathering in front of the Student Activity Center, our freshmen were officially welcomed by Mr. H (Rudy Herrera), Bosco’s Director of Youth Ministry and Student Life. After explaining how unique the Salesian Experience is among schools, he introduced the “Big Three + 1” student leaders of the retreat: Gianni Carrano (CSEE ’26), Josh Camarillo (BMET ’25), & Evan Cheung (MSET ’25), and new alumnus Nicky Dominguez (BMET ’24).

The Playground element started with getting to know each other, their small group leaders and Big Brothers. This was accomplished through several ice breakers: Postmaster, Sharks & Minnows, an obstacle course, and a water balloon toss. As could be expected on a hot day with teenage boys, this turned into a free for all with 3,000 balloons and multiple buckets of water cooling all the participants as well as nonparticipants Mr. H and Assistant Youth Minister Brad Stolz.

To determine which groups would get the coolest spots to sleep in over night, (the choices were the gym, multi-purpose room, Youth Ministry, or outside) a scavenger hunt was employed. This consisted of each group running to each of 18 stations spread out across campus and performing various tasks, such as creating a human pyramid, getting wrapped up as a mummy, etc. Next, to replenish their energy for what was going to be a long evening, Magda didn’t disappoint by presenting a filling, tasty dinner.

The Church element was next on the agenda. To prepare for Saturday’s Mass on the beach, everyone proceeded in their groups to the football field for the reconciliation service. In their groups, they discussed several topics to prepare themselves for receiving the sacrament.

FRESHMAN SALESIAN EXPERIENCE

CONTINUED

Bosco’s Salesian Director, Fr. Thien Nguyen, was available for the Catholics who wished to go to confession. Those not Catholic could go to the adult youth ministers or also Fr. Thien if they wanted guidance on anything. The evening concluded with free time to play basketball. The evening ended with the Good Night Prayer as practiced by Don Bosco, featuring a talk by our alumnus Nicky. Lights were supposedly out at 11:00 pm. Adult parents took turns chaperoning through the night.

Early the next morning, the group started preparing for an early departure to the beach; awakening to Magda’s delicious breakfast burritos made that activity much more pleasant. Upon arrival at Huntington State Beach, their first activity was a safety talk by lifeguard where they would be swimming. Since the water was around 70-71 degress, most did not waste time getting in and spending much of their day there.

When they wanted to dry out, they could catch up on sleep, play football, baseball, soccer, dig holes, and enter a sand castle contest. The hamburger & hot dog lunch which was prepared by 10 parent volunteers, was extremely popular. After lunch and more water and sand activities, the afternoon’s highlight of Mass on the beach employed the oratory’s Church element. Following the Mass, a dinner of carne asada was much appreciated.

Upon return to Bosco, the Freshmen Salesian Experience ended in the gym. The parents were introduced to the Big Three + 1, the 18 Small Group Leaders, the 43 Big Brothers, and the two adult Youth Ministry leaders who had lovingly inducted their 91 sons into the brotherhood of Bosco Tech. 40-50% of the school population took part in this retreat. Freshmen Sebastian Rosas and Isaac DeCuir spoke of their experiences. The evening ended with the students’ hearty rendition of the “Don Bosco Song” and recitation of the Alma Mater. All in all, what a unique experience for all!

Asked about their Freshmen Salesian Experience, a few of the students shared:

PARENT SERVICE HOUR OPPORTUNITY

The Bosco Tech Parent Council is in the planning stage for the Annual Mother’s Tea on Sunday, Sept. 29. We are looking for volunteers who like to shop and can help us find fun and unique tea cups and saucers as well as teapots for our next tea party.

Tea Cups/Saucers and Tea Pots -- Needed by no later than Sept. 9th. We do ask that they are tea cups and not coffee cups, and the more vintage they are, the better to fit the theme. In most years we need up to 150 teacup and saucer sets and 20 teapots.

For every $50 in product donated, we will award one parent service hour. Please remember, we want each cup to be unique, different in sizes, shapes, colors and designs. The cup and saucer do not need to match; in fact the more mismatched, the better. Please, no plain colors, or glass cups. We are looking for primarily English floral or vintage designs.

For more information please contact Mrs. Cathy Rivera at crivera@boscotech.edu.
