We want to congratulate your son and share with you in the pride at his accomplishment! Please log all college acceptances and scholarship offers as they come in at app.scoir.com/ Also, if your son already has committed to a college, please let us know that, too.
The evening of March 5 was one for the record books at Bosco Tech. Along with a moving remembrance of Bishop David O’Connell, the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick, Bishop Dave’s family, the Bosco Tech alumni and parents, and many generous benefactors came together to raise over $260,000 for our school. We welcomed over 330 people to our campus in what was the largest single fundraising event in school history. If you were in attendance, thank you for joining us and for your support of the Tech. We look forward to building on this progress - and honoring the legacy of a true lion of our community - again next year.
Special thanks to the generous sponsors and donors of the 12th Annual Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick celebration

Congratulations to Tech senior EphraimJosephDe LaCruz (CSEE ‘23) and Mr. RobGodinez, Social Sciences instructor and assistant basketball coach, who have been named recipients of this year’s Archdiocese Christian Service Award. The award is presented annually to outstanding students and instructors from local Catholic high schools for significant contributions in the area of Christian service.
Ephraim Joseph De La Cruz has been involved in Christian Service both on and off campus, having volunteered with such organizations as God Provides Food Bank, Hope Meal Bags and Heart of Compassion, serving low income families and those who suffer from chronic food insecurity.
On campus, Ephraim is an active member of Youth Ministry. He has assisted in the planning and implementation of most ministry events over the last 3½ years and has served for two years as a member of our Youth Ministry Core Team. In this role, Ephraim has helped plan various class retreats, school-wide liturgical celebrations and monthly character assemblies. He has mentored underclassmen. Ephraim was especially instrumental with the planning of our Monterey Park Memorial Service.
Ephraim’s service work has also branched out academically, serving as a summer school Teacher’s Aide to incoming freshmen in both his own technology major - Computer Science and Electrical Engineering - and a Pre-Algebra course. He has also focused a considerable amount of time, energy and effort in his work as ASB Senior Class Co-President, guiding his class through their many events and activities.
Mr. Rob Godinez has been at the Tech for almost 25 years, primarily in the social sciences department, teaching such subjects as AP Government and AP Economics. He became involved in the school’s basketball program more than 10 years ago and is now Assistant Basketball Coach and Director of Basketball Operations.
He has served the school as assistant to the Student Activities Director for several years and about 20 years ago, Rob attended his first Kairos and quickly became an adult leader, at least once each year for the next eight years. He was also an adult director for four of those retreats. In Fall of 2011, Rob officially took over as our school’s Kairos Director.
Mr. Godinez shares, “The Kairos Retreats are important to me because they represent the culmination of the Salesian Oratory of Bosco Tech. At the retreats, the seniors are given an opportunity to reflect on their relationships to God (church), their families (home), and their friends (school and playground). Kairos gives seniors an opportunity to step back from the extreme stress and busyness of their final year of high school and to reflect on what they've experienced, something I think every senior desperately needs. It allows them to let go of things that are holding them back and embrace the things that truly matter. I really believe the Kairos retreat has helped change lives for the better, and in some cases, has saved the lives of students who just needed a little time to realize they are loved.”
His most significant take away from the Kairos retreats is that the students are stronger and more resilient than teachers will ever know. “I have had students talk about situations that, if I were facing them as an adult, would have left me broken. Yet they continue to survive. It also continues to remind me that we have built a great support system at Bosco Tech with a caring and compassionate faculty and staff, but more importantly
a caring and compassionate student body who truly do love one another.”
“Congratulations to both Ephraim and Mr. Godinez,” said Tech Principal Jeff Krynen. “These gentlemen are truly representative of the best in leadership, dedication, and Christian Service. Our Tech community is very blessed to have them.”
Congratulations to the Tech' basketball team for the recognition team members and Coach Romo are receiving for their incredible season. The Tigers basketball team has much to celebrate! Please join us in congratulating:

Bosco Tech senior DavidCeballos (CSEE ‘23) has been named a 2023 Edison Scholar. David is one of 30 local high school seniors granted the honor and a $50,000 scholarship by Edison International to pursue post secondary science, technology, engineering or math studies. The award also offers him the opportunity to intern at SCE. The scholarship is awarded annually to high-achieving high school seniors within Southern California Edison’s broad service area.
David is a member of the Tech’s Key Club and National Honor Society. Last summer, he completed both the Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation Summer Fellows Program and a coding internship with SoZango Solutions/Flex Together, an online health community. He is a math and physics tutor both at the Tech and at his local library.
“We’re incredibly proud of David and his achievements,” said Principal Jeff Krynen. “And we’re truly grateful to Edison International for generously recognizing forward-thinking young people like David. We’re thrilled that within just a few years, three of our students has earned this incredible honor.”
Congratulations to our BMET juniors who represented the Tech at the 73rd annual Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair in mid-March. The LACSEF provides a yearly forum for middle/high school students to showcase their projects. This year, more than 700 students participated.
Two projects by Tech students, Gerardo Cordova(Magnets Matter), and Nicholas Dominguez, Andrei De La Cruz, and Ryan Tanada’s (Hydroponic Growth Rates), received "Honorable Mention" which means they came in just behind the 3rd place finisher (4th place).
Several other students earned recognition for their participation in the competition. Congratulations to Nathaniel Madrid, Manuel Mendez, Gabriel Morales, Adrian Monteon, and Thomas Narito.
On March 8, we were happy to introduce Mr. Bruce Davis (LEED AP, MBA), Technical Staff Manager from the Parsons Corporation, to our campus, technology labs, and especially, our students. Parsons, which employs 16,000 engineers in 24 countries, is focusing on building relationships with universities and community colleges to create a pipeline for qualified designers, civil, mechanical, computer, and cyber engineers.
Parson’s Pasadena-based Vice President of Engineering, who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, recommended the Tech to Mr. Davis as a prospective partner for mentoring, internships, and future employment due to the caliber of our technology and applied science program.
After his visit, Mr. Davis wrote to us, “I am very impressed with the overall educational experience that your students receive, and the substance that you give them to thrive in the short and long term in academic, professional and civic arenas...I look forward to helping build bonds that are mutually beneficial over the coming months and years.”
We’re excited about the chance to work with the Parsons Corporation in the future, and the potential opportunities for our students! Thank you, Mr. Davis, and thank you, Parsons Corporation!
Juniors in the Tech’s internship program visited with Ms. Pat Sandoval, a member of the school’s Board of Trustees, at lunch today. Ms. Sandoval, who is Program Analyst/Project Management Specialist with the Science Applications International Corporation, was previously at The Boeing Corporation for 35 years where she was Chief of Staff-Vice President-Engineering Space and Launch. In 2006, she created Boeing's popular High School Summer Internship Program that many Tech students have since completed.
Pat discussed career opportunities in the aerospace industry and encouraged students to explore their career interests through internships. She also shared tips on colleges matched to students' interests. In addition to technical skills, she emphasized that the most important skills students can bring to internships and careers in aerospace and the government are: a commitment to serving others, ethics, time management, and attention to detail.
Thank you, Mrs. Sandoval, for taking time to share valuable advice and guidance with our young men!
Bosco Tech is pleased to announce the next winners of the Student of the Month award, which is voted on by Tech teachers to receive this recognition. Please be sure to congratulate our March award winners when you see them on the campus:
Grade 9: Zane Daoud(ACE)
Grade 10: SebastianGomez (MAT)
Grade 11:AidanCervantes (CSEE)
Grade 12: Dereck Barajas (IDEA)
Through perseverance and determination, our Robotics team competed in the Los Angeles regional competition for FIRST robotics. The team’s 123-pound robot was designed and manufactured by our students to traverse and manipulate various cones and inflatable game pieces. We overcame multiple obstacles and brought all we had up to the last match. The competition was called “Charged Up,” and that is exactly how we feel for next year!
Technically, the season is over and the team is now preparing for-off season activities like the Beach Blitz event, Tidal Tumble scheduled for November, other competitions, and restructuring, rebuilding and preparing for the next year of events.
A big shoutout to the team moderators Mr. Cameron Wright and Mr. Ted Iskenderian (Tech alumnus and JPL Contract Technical Manager) and a thank you to the team leaders:
Team Captain NoahPinales
President IanKalvinskas
Mechanical Lead Theodore Truong
Design Lead Wesley Bulthuis
The team also wishes to thank our dedicated parents for their unwavering support and instilling in our young men an indefatigable spirit.

The preconditioning, conditioning, and practicing the 36 -member Bosco Tech Track & Field Team has done since December has resulted in noteworthy results in its first meets in March.
Our first meet was the large Condor Invitational at California High School on March 3 and 4. For our freshmen and several others, it was their first time ever participating at a track meet, so it was quite a learning experience. Many new personal records (PRs) were set. Especially noteworthy was senior ChristianPerez who took 3rd place in the varsity mile with a PR of 4:36, and was 4th overall in the 800 with a time of 2:04. In the frosh/soph discus, sophomores Aria Parvinjahand John Lugo finished 5-6th by throwing 87 feet, 8 inches and 85-10, respectively. They, as well as junior NoahEscaleraand seniors Nene Arias and Santiago Romero won some of our first medals of the season.
Our first of three regular league meets took place on a very cold day at St. Paul High School on March 8. The Tech had many really impressive results. On the track, Christian and sophomore Danny Cendejas finished 12 in the varsity 1600, while the JV took the first six places, lead by sophomore MicahWong’s 5:17. In the 800, Danny took 2nd for varsity and sophomores Jacob Campa and Micah went 1 and 3. Christian won the varsity 3200 by 45 seconds! For JV, junior Khiru Khan and sophomore JoshCamarillo went 1-2. On the field, varsity junior Jake Ayalatook second in shot put by throwing 39 feet, and in JV, Ariatook 1st and sophomore JuanCasillas, 2nd by throwing 35-6 and 34-11. In JV discus, Ariacame in 1st, and Juan, 3rd. In varsity discus, Jake came in second with a throw of 114 feet, 7 inches the furthest Bosco throw in over 10 years! No medals are given at regular league meets.
Our third meet was the St. Paul Classic Invitational on a wet and cold March 11. There were too many PRs and medals won to name them all. Mention does need to be made, however, of two varsity distance races. Christian came in 2nd with 4:36, and Danny’s 8th overall in 4:44 was the 5th fastest sophomore time in the last 15 years! For the 3200, Christianand Danny finished 1st and 2nd.
On Saturday, March 18,16 distance runners attended our fourth meet, the Arcadia Distance Challenge at Arcadia High School. Finally, the weather was good. Twelve team members PRed in one or more events, three boys won two medals each, and two others received one. Christian ran the 1600 in 4:31, breaking into the top 10 in Tech history! He also ran the 3200 (2 mile) race in 9:55 for his first time under 10 minutes.
Come to our April meets and watch our team improve their skills and add to their medal collections:
4/1 Covina Invitational @ Covina District Stadium
4/5 3rd league meet @ St. Paul HS
4/15 San Gabriel Valley Championships @ Covina District Stadium

Kudos to ACE’s 2023 CIEF (Construction Industry Education Foundation) Design Build team of seniors, who recently earned the Architectural Award in the organization’s annual Southern California competition. The event, held at Huntington Beach’s Golden West College on March 22 and 23, saw Southern California high schools building code-compliant structures on the spot.
The CIEF is dedicated to education and career awareness of the construction industry among high school students and annually hosts this strenuous, hands-on contest. The competition challenged each high school team to design and prepare several construction documents according to criteria outlined by CIEF. Teams then built the structures during the two-day competition and were judged by industry professionals on design completion, construction, code compliance, and safety. The seniors went over and beyond in their preparation for the competition by earning OSHA certification prior to the competition, earning them extra points in the final tally. Great job, gentlemen!

March 6’s Junior Class Unity Mass and Ring Ceremony brought together the Class of 2024 and their families.
We have some very exciting news to share in this April issue of The Gear. The Esports program has begun a partnership with tech company MSI to re-outfit our computer lab in the MAT tech. This has been a many-month-long project finally coming to fruition in these past few weeks. We were able to close on a deal that brought in 30 new computers, along with monitors, keyboards, mice, etc. to outfit each station.
These stations now equip us to host our practices and games on campus and gives our players the ability to compete next to their teammates instead of only from home. This also lets us begin our planning on building out a broadcast area so that we can stream more of our matches allowing family, friends, and fans to enjoy watching our competitions.
These PCs are some of the newest state of the art computers that MSI has to offer. They will give our players the competitive edge in their matches, as well as give our Media Arts department new resources better equipped to handle the taxation of digital media work.
This wouldn't have been possible without the support of our school administration and would not have been assembled as quickly without the assistance of some of our program’s student athletes, the most notable being Riley and Ryan Tanada and Tommy Duong. Also a very big thank you to Christine Fan, Robert Chen and the MSI and Insight crews who helped make this possible.
