New public toilet opens in Earl Shilton

Cameras will be worn on officers’ uniforms and will only start recording after a person has been observed committing an offence. It is hoped that the cameras will also help to prevent incidents of physical and verbal abuse towards officers.

The cameras can record for several hours before they need to be charged, ensuring officers are always able to use the devices. Footage will be securely downloaded using a docking station, which will then enable officers and other authorised council staff to view the footage on a computer.Councillor Bill Crooks, Executive Member for Streetscene Services, said: “We are committed to keeping our enforcement officers safe as they go about their jobs keeping our town centres and streets free from litter. “Evidence shows that wearing body cameras can lead to a behaviour change from potential offenders who are less likely to be physically or verbally abusive towards officers.

As part of the scheme, those being recorded will be told as soon as is practically possible that they are being filmed. The cameras will provide officers with a record of everything that is said, which can also be used to make sure officers are carrying out the correct procedures.

SHOPPERS and residents can benefit from a new public toilet in Earl Shilton’s town centre. The new public toilet is based in the foyer of the Wood Street Public Library and can be accessed six days a week, (Monday to Saturday, early morning to early evening). For more than a decade, the town had been without a modern proper and easily accessible public However, toilet.after the town, borough and county councils joined forces, the new and updated facility is now officially open.

The council is extremely grateful for the community support groups that have been established, offering a source of mutual support and this, the council organised a social gathering bringing together Ukrainian guests and host families from across the borough, as a way of enabling further connections and friendships to be made. This also provided an opportunity to mark Ukraine Independence Day.

One host said: “Thank you for putting me in touch with the lovely support group which meets at our local church. It was very supportive and the food pack they gave us full of Ukrainian treats went down very well.

“All the people involved in volunteering or working to support our Ukrainian guests have really helped us sponsors and our guests to find what we need.”

One guest said: “The British Government gave us visas but local people and our host helped us to feel safe and protected. My family came to Hinckley almost four months ago and we were welcomed here as a part of a big family.

“This is so typical of the ‘can-do’ attitude from residents and partners across the borough.

GENEROUS and kind-hearted households are being praised for opening their doors to Ukrainian families this year. Since the Russian attack on Ukraine began in February, 77 homeowners across Hinckley and Bosworth have welcomed 141 Ukrainians into theirThehomes.Borough Council has continued to provide a dedicated single point of contact officer, to respond to ongoing queries from both Ukrainian guests and their sponsors, and ensuring all stay up to date with the latest guidance and local support also been supporting Ukrainian individuals and families through their Welfare Support Service. “If you produce waste at home or from a business, you have a responsibility to ensure it is disposed of legally and safely.

“This means making sure anyone who is handling your waste is licensed to do so. It is vital that you take steps to check that your rubbish will be disposed of correctly and that you are confident you know where it will end up otherwise you run the risk of a fine or even legal action.”

Executive Member for Clean Neighbourhoods at the Borough Council, Cllr Bill Crooks, said: "Fly-tipping and other types of waste crime are a blight on our neighbourhoods, communities and environment.

FAMILIESover the summer holidays took part in Earthwatch’s first community science event at Queens Park and Jellicoe Way, Hinckley, both newly planted Tiny Forests.Children and their parents spent the morning, or an afternoon immersed in nature and conducting hands-on research while learning how Tiny Forests can benefit both wildlife and people. From colour soil testing to identifying ground dwellers and discovering new wildlife, the children also took part in tree measuring and looked at flood management and infiltration rates within the forest.

The Tiny Forest model works by planting a variety of local species into a dense space the size of a tennis court. The plants are carefully selected to grow at varying heights, meaning they can pack in many more plants than a space of the same size would normally hold.

SUTTONCheney has been enjoying a splash of colour, thanks to the addition of new roadsideTheplanters.colourful planters will also play a role in forming new gateways into the village, with residents hoping that they will highlight the 30mph speed limit and tackle speeding motorists.Theplanters were purchased thanks to a grant of £1,325 from the Borough Council’s Parish and Community Initiative Scheme. They are made of recycled slate stone, which has sentimental value to the residents of Sutton Cheney, and reclaimed red brick. They are also topped with a reclaimed tile crease, which is in keeping with some of the ancient brick and stone buildings within the village.Adedicated team of volunteers will maintain the planters, working alongside each other in the community.

Cllr Martin Cartwright, Executive Member for Rural Affairs, said: "Thank you to Sutton Cheney Parish Council for asking me to officially reveal the new planters. They were constructed by a local builder and installed in time for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations."Given the dedication of Sutton Cheney in Bloom and local residents to keep the village looking pristine, these planters I am sure will always look the best they can and help highlight the speed limit within the village, which I am aware is of a concern to local residents.”

Executive Member for Rural Affairs at the Borough Council, Cllr Martin Cartwright added: "I am delighted that the funding has enabled new signage to be designed and installed across the parish. “This is a perfect example of how the funding can work and benefit residents.”

Councillor Martin Cartwright, Executive Member for Rural Affairs at the Borough Council, said: “As in previous years I would like to see these grants spread as wide as possible, with special emphasis on the smaller organisations as well as parish councils.“Alsoany project with a focus on climate impact reduction or help towards being carbon neutral by 2030 will have extra points awarded in the overall scoring process. I would urge your group or parish council to apply. Good luck."
