EXISTING SITE CONDITION

Lei Yue Mun is experiencing gradual transformations subjected to the change in land usage and the growing population. Ever since 2000, the industrial lands in Hong Kong have been renewed for non-industrial purposes, which released a certain amount of land resources to the society. The government initiated several proposals on converting the former industrial lands to the west of the selected site along Victoria Harbour, into commercial, residential, and comprehensive development area. This means that the population in the subject area will be largely increased in the upcoming ten to twenty years in relation to the number of housing and work opportunities. Due to the potential changes, the existing Lei Yue Mun Municipal Services Building completed in 2000 might not be able to accommodate such challenges, especially in this vast changing environment. Meanwhile to the east of the site is the well-known seafood market that attracts tens of thousands of tourists either enjoying the cuisine or visiting the local market. The history behind this Sam Ka Tsuen and its composition have inspired the design of the prototype based on its uniqueness and adaptiveness. In my design proposal, the selected prototype and composition principles are applied to the building design. Not only does it recapture the history of this village in a contemporary way, but also enhances the living environment through community support.

PROTOTYPE STACKING

The prototype that I have selected for the design of the Municipal Services Building is inspired by the history and evolution of squatter hut. The list of diagrams shows the evolution of Sam Ka Tsuen; before the quarry was abandoned in 1960s, the village was mainly functioned as labour housing for the miners as it located close to the quarry. The residents tended to extend their own premises when they did not have sufficient place to live. However, after the quarry was banned by the government, the village transformed from a residential area into the well-known seafood market, the commercial activities are mainly happened on the ground floor and the entrance of the village.
