An individually designed bungalow in Hawick that has style as well as space
Being smaller and more compact by design, bungalows often lack the architectural features that make larger house styles visually appealing – but not this one. David and Dr Susan Horsfalls’ bungalow in Hawick is particularly eye-catching, with its red brick detailing, distinctive arched window and columned entrance, all of which stem from the fact that every house on Liddesdale Crescent was individually designed as a self build project. Built in 2002, the couple bought the property two years later and altered the layout to make best possible use of the space. “Although it has always been a very spacious home the original layout had lots of open archways leading into lots of rooms,” says Susan. “We changed the space to create a flexible layout that is more conducive to family living and included turning an overly large toilet into a more useful shower room.” Who would believe a bungalow could have so much space? The revamped accommodation comprises large hall, living room, dining room and near 23ft refitted dining kitchen.
It has a master bedroom with en suite bathroom, two further double bedrooms (one with the added bonus of the arched front window), family bathroom, utility, bedroom four/office with en suite shower room, and integrated single garage, all of it beautifully decorated and presented in move-in condition. Outside paints a similarly attractive picture. The enclosed rear garden, a feature in its own right, houses a sizable 3m x 4m log cabin that could have myriad uses for leisure, recreation or as a work base. There is also an attractive paved patio, lawn, terrace with raised beds, and a variety of mature trees and shrubs. Back inside, this home has some outstanding features, most notably the dining kitchen, which was completely re -fitted two years ago and includes cream units with a matching dresser/sideboard, chunky solid walnut worktops, one-and -a-half-bowl ceramic sink, integrated dishwasher, marble-effect laminate flooring and pale cream splashback tiling.
The sliding doors that open on to the rear patio are fitted with cream working shutters, while the contrasting red Sandyford stove and freestanding American-style fridge freezer are available by separate negotiation. The living room also has an eye-catching feature, a hand-carved solid oak fire surround with cast iron insert and a multi -fuel stove on a black tiled hearth. Open archways on either side of the fireplace lead into the dining room, which is similarly decorated in neutral shades and can also be accessed from the hall. Elsewhere, the master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe with hanging and shelving space, and a super-sized en suite bathroom (larger than the family bathroom) that is fitted with a five-piece suite incorporating a corner bath and separate shower and vanity storage. The main bathroom has an over-bath shower and Jacuzzi spa bath.
Wherever you are in this house you are near to either a bath or a shower room and the fourth bedroom, which is used as an office at present but would make ideal guest accommodation, has an attractive en suite shower room – both rooms also have solid oak flooring. Big on both style and space, this is a lovely home in a desirable area within easy walking distance of Hawick’s town centre, park and other attractions. . . . Bungalows don’t come much better.
