Adecade ago, Border Heritage was born with a clear mission: to honor, highlight, and celebrate the stories, roots, and rich culture of the border region between Mexico and the United States. Since then, each edition has served as a bridge— of words, images, and testimonies—connecting communities on both sides of the Río Grande.
Today, we proudly celebrate our 10th anniversary. Ten years of telling stories that matter, of recognizing those who build and shape our borderlands, of weaving identity and belonging. And there is no better way to mark this milestone than with a historic cover: the new Mayor of El Paso, Renard Johnson.
Mayor Johnson’s leadership represents a new chapter for El Paso—a city that has grown with dignity, inclusion, and vision, always grounded in its binational character. His presence on our cover is more than symbolic: it is a recognition of the transformative moment our region is experiencing and of the importance of continuing to foster cultural, social, and economic dialogue that transcends borders.
As we celebrate, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has worked on this magazine throughout the years. To every contributor, journalist, photographer, designer, editor, artist, and creative who has nourished our pages with powerful images and words: thank you, deeply and sincerely!
Above all, I thank God for allowing me to walk this path. And with profound emotion, I express my gratitude to the one who gave me life— my mother. Her immense love, example, and faith have been the silent strength behind every step. Always grateful, with all my heart.

Hace una década, Border Heritage nació con una misión clara: honrar, visibilizar y celebrar las historias, las raíces y la riqueza cultural de la región fronteriza entre México y Estados Unidos. Desde entonces, cada edición ha sido un puente de palabras, imágenes y testimonios que conectan a comunidades de ambos lados del Río Bravo.
Hoy, celebramos con orgullo nuestro décimo aniversario. Diez años de contar historias que importan, de destacar a quienes construyen y transforman nuestra frontera, de tejer identidad y pertenencia. Y no hay mejor manera de marcar este hito que con una portada histórica: el nuevo Alcalde de El Paso, Renard Johnson.
El liderazgo del Mayor Johnson representa una nueva etapa para El Paso, una ciudad que ha sabido crecer con dignidad, inclusión y visión, siempre desde su carácter binacional. Su presencia en nuestra portada no sólo es simbólica: es un reconocimiento al momento transformador que vive nuestra región y a la importancia de seguir impulsando un diálogo cultural, social y económico que trascienda muros.
En esta celebración, quiero felicitar con el corazón a todos los que han trabajado en la revista durante estos diez años. A cada colaborador, periodista, fotógrafo, diseñador, editor, artista y creativo que ha nutrido nuestras páginas con imágenes, palabras y pasión: ¡gracias infinitas!

This represents a well-deserved recognition of a charismatic, humble, and compassionate leader who continues to inspire us to work for the well-being of our community.

The Sun Bowl Stadium at the University of Texas at El Paso was on fire—and not just from the scorching heat, but from the warmth of the thousands of fans who gathered to experience the most anticipated concert of the year. On June 13, El Paso witnessed a historic night as the British band Coldplay took the stage for the first time as part of their acclaimed world tour, Music of the Spheres.
Border Heritage attended the first of two concerts offered by the band on their first-ever visit to the border city. Under a clear sky and temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F), fans proved that when it comes to great music, not even the most intense heat can dim the excitement.
From noon on, the first fans began arriving, full of enthusiasm and eager anticipation to see one of the world’s most iconic bands live. Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, reusable water bottles, and an electric sense of joy filled the air in the long lines that began forming early in the day—despite warnings from the organizers.
As night fell, the thermometer gradually dropped, and at exactly 9 p.m., the stadium exploded with lights and cheers as the opening notes of “Higher Power” rang out. What followed was a multisensory experience that touched the soul: dazzling visuals, wristbands that changed colors with
each song, messages of sustainability, human connection, and hope. Coldplay delivered a journey through their most beloved songs: Yellow, Clocks, Viva la Vida, Fix You, A Sky Full of Stars, and We Pray, the latter performed alongside Elyanna and Willow Smith. Every corner of the stadium pulsed with energy, and every heart beat in sync.
Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion didn’t just deliver music—they brought magic, community, and unity. Chris Martin, the band’s lead singer, addressed the audience in Spanish several times, earning wave after wave of applause for his charisma, humility, and warmth. The crowd sang every lyric, celebrating the spectacular lights and fireworks that elevated the night’s vibes even higher.
Coldplay’s visit also left a positive impact on the local economy, as thousands of fans traveled exclusively to El Paso to attend the concert. The band expressed their gratitude and joy at being on borderland soil and didn’t miss the chance to share a meaningful moment: Mayor Renard Johnson presented them with the key to the city, honoring them as distinguished guests of El Paso.
It was an unforgettable night—a night when music reminded us that it’s still possible to feel deeply connected, to each other and to the world.

RENARD JOHNSON Leading El Paso with Heart and Vision
Renard Johnson not only made history by becoming the first African American mayor of El Paso, but he also brought a new energy to the city’s public life through a leadership style that has proven to be deeply human and close to the people. Johnson is a successful entrepreneur and family man, known for his humble, approachable character and strong commitment to his community.
He was born in Chicago but grew up in northeast El Paso. He attended Andress High School and earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
His love for the city has been with him throughout his life, and now, in his new role as mayor, he wants everyone to see El Paso as he does: a city with soul, full of potential, and with much to offer.
Our mayor is a lover of good food and travel, especially to Mexico. He is also a basketball fan, but what he enjoys most is spending time with his daughters. Every moment with his family, despite his busy schedule, is something he tries to make the most of.
“I truly enjoy spending time with my daughters; I’m proud to watch them grow,” he says.
Johnson deeply values the cultural richness of this binational region: two countries, two cities, and one shared community. That’s why one of his main priorities as mayor is to improve the quality of life for El Paso residents and prepare the city to welcome tourism as it deserves. “We want El Paso to be seen as a vibrant, diverse, first-class tourist destination.”
Aware that he leads a city with strong ties to Ciudad Juárez and the city of Las Cruces, Johnson has sought to work in coordination with the government of Ciudad Juárez, the mayor of Las Cruces, and the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso. He made a commitment to strengthen the bonds among these three cities in order to address binational issues and promote tri-state unity (Chihuahua, Texas, and New Mexico), which share a common history, culture, and future.
Renard Johnson is a man who, despite holding political office, has not lost the humility that defines him. A generous man with a clear vision and his feet firmly on the ground, Johnson represents a new chapter for El Paso: one that is more humane, more united, and firmly focused on the future.

Renard Johnson no solo hizo historia al convertirse en el primer alcalde afroamericano de El Paso, sino que también ha traído consigo una nueva energía a la vida pública de la ciudad, a través de su gestión, que ha demostrado ser profundamente humana y cercana a la ciudadanía. Johnson es un empresario exitoso y padre de familia, de carácter sencillo, accesible y comprometido con su comunidad.

“Disfruto mucho pasar el tiempo con mis hijas, me enorgullece verlas crecer”, declara.
Johnson valora profundamente la riqueza cultural de esta región binacional: dos países, dos ciudades y una sola comunidad. Por eso, una de sus prioridades como alcalde es elevar la calidad de vida de los paseños y preparar a la ciudad para recibir al turismo como se merece. "Queremos que El Paso sea visto como un destino turístico vibrante, diverso y de primer nivel".
Consciente de que dirige una ciudad con fuertes vínculos con Ciudad Juárez y la ciudad de Las Cruces, Johnson ha procurado trabajar en coordinación con el gobierno de Ciudad Juárez, con el alcalde de Las Cruces y el Consulado General de México en El Paso, ya que hizo el compromiso de fortalecer los lazos entre estas tres ciudades en aras de resolver temas binacionales que promuevan la unión triestatal (Chihuahua, Texas y Nuevo México) que comparten historia, cultura y futuro.
Renard Johnson es un hombre que, a pesar del cargo político que ocupa, no ha perdido la sencillez que lo caracteriza. Un hombre generoso, con una visión clara y los pies bien puestos en la tierra, Johnson representa una nueva etapa para El Paso: una más humana, más unida y con la mirada puesta en el futuro.
El corazón del centro de El Paso latió al ritmo del arte en movimiento con la presencia del reconocido artista plástico Juan Carlos Santoscoy, quien ofreció una noche llena de creatividad, color y emoción ante un público selecto que se dio cita en el exclusivo espacio de Lenox. La velada, organizada por Border Heritage Magazine como parte de la celebración de su décimo aniversario, se convirtió en una experiencia sensorial única donde la música, la iluminación, la pintura y el talento se fusionaron en perfecta armonía.
Desde su llegada, Santoscoy conquistó a los asistentes con su técnica inconfundible: trazos fluorescentes, luz negra y una energía creativa que se sincronizaba con los beats del DJ Omar Blancas. El público, fascinado, permanecía expectante mientras el artista intervenía en vivo a las modelos Fabiola Salayandia y Daysi Aguirre, quienes, con una imponente presencia escénica, se convirtieron en lienzos vivientes bajo las manos del artista. Líneas, puntos y patrones emergían al compás de la música, creando una obra efímera e hipnotizante.
El ambiente se elevó aún más gracias al servicio de cócteles y bebidas, cortesía de una cuidada selección de patrocinadores que apostaron por la cultura y el arte. Participaron restaurantes y marcas reconocidas como Humo, Los Pistoleros Taquería, Del Paso Bakery, Jarritos, Sushiitto Bar, Tequila Don Vicente y el vino La Turbina, traído especialmente desde Casas Grandes, Chihuahua. El evento también contó con el respaldo de empresas comprometidas con la comunidad, como Economy Cash & Carry Warehouse, HUTB International, Hand & Stone, entre otros aliados que hicieron posible esta noche inolvidable. La intervención de Juan Carlos Santoscoy no fue solo una muestra de arte: fue una declaración de pasión, estilo y vanguardia, celebrando con fuerza el legado de una década de Border Heritage Magazine. They join forces to support nursing students with scholarships and financial education.
Southwest University proudly announced a new partnership with FirstLight Federal Credit Union, aimed at supporting the College of Nursing through a scholarship program and a financial wellness initiative. This collaboration is based on a shared commitment to strengthening the communities of El Paso, Doña Ana, and Fort Bliss by creating meaningful opportunities for students and families in the region. As part of the agreement, FirstLight FCU will contribute $20,000 over five years to establish an exclusive scholarship fund for nursing students.
The goal is to remove financial barriers and support the education of future healthcare professionals who will contribute to the well-being of the metropolitan area. In addition to financial support, the
partnership will offer free financial education sessions for students and community members, covering key topics such as budgeting, saving, credit management, and long-term planning.
This initiative reflects both institutions’ joint commitment to community empowerment, access to education, and economic mobility in the border region. Second Annual Soirée Serenade at the Vineyard UNITES COMMUNITY FOR CANCER CARE AN EVENING OF HOPE

En una dorada noche de junio bajo las estrellas de La Union, Nuevo México, más de 200 invitados se reunieron en el pintoresco entorno de La Viña Winery para celebrar la compasión, la resiliencia y el poder de la comunidad durante la segunda edición del Soirée Serenade at the Vineyard. Organizado por University Medical Center Foundation of El Paso (UMC Foundation), el evento del 7 de junio fue un tributo y un llamado a la acción, recaudando fondos esenciales para el Cancer Care Fund de la UMC Foundation, el cual brinda apoyo vital a pacientes en la región fronteriza.
Este año, la velada adquirió un significado especial con Woodart Enterprises como Patrocinador Principal. En un emotivo momento, Ivonne Woodart se dirigió al público para honrar la memoria de su querido esposo, Simon Arthur Woodart Sr., quien falleció de cancer a principios de este año. Sus palabras, llenas de fortaleza y gracia, reflejaron un profundo compromiso con la construcción de un legado basado en la compasión y el servicio.
Sus hijos, Samantha, Jasmine y Simon Jr., acompañaron a su madre en el homenaje a un hombre cuya serena fortaleza continúa inspirando. “Lo más importante que nuestro padre nos enseñó fue el ser caritativo,” compartió Simon Jr. “Cuando alguien necesita ayuda, uno acude.” Sus reflexiones conmovieron a muchos en la audiencia, reforzando la idea de que la filantropía basada en el amor tiene el poder de sanar más allá de la medicina. Pero más allá del vino y la música, la Soirée puso en evidencia un problema de salud crítica. El cáncer sigue siendo la principal causa de muerte entre las poblaciones hispanas, y en el Condado de El Paso, el número de casos de cáncer invasivo continúa en aumento. Para muchas familias locales, la detección temprana y el acceso al tratamiento siguen estando fuera de su alcance. El Cancer Care Fund existe para cerrar esa brecha, ofreciendo apoyo cuando más se necesita. Al honrar la memoria de Simon Woodart Sr. y celebrar la fortaleza de su familia, la Soirée Serenade nos recordó que los legados no se miden por el tiempo, sino por las vidas que tocan.
On a golden June evening beneath the starlit sky of La Union, New Mexico, more than 200 guests gathered at the picturesque La Viña Winery to celebrate compassion, resilience, and the enduring power of community at the Second Annual Soirée Serenade at the Vineyard. Hosted by University Medical Center Foundation of El Paso, the June 7 event was both a tribute and a call to action, raising vital funds for the Foundation’s Cancer Care Fund, which directly supports patients across the Borderplex region.
This year, the evening took on special meaning with Woodart Enterprises as the Title Sponsor. In a poignant moment, Ivonne Woodart addressed the crowd, honoring the memory of her beloved husband, Simon Arthur Woodart Sr., who passed away from cancer earlier this year. Her words, filled with strength and grace, reflected a profound commitment to building a legacy grounded in compassion and service.
Their children, Samantha, Jasmine, and Simon Jr., joined their mother in paying tribute to a man whose quiet strength continues to inspire. “The most important thing our father ever taught us was selflessness,” shared Simon Jr. “When someone needs help, you show up.” Their reflections moved many in the audience, reinforcing the idea that philanthropy rooted in love has the power to heal far beyond medicine. With support from Caring Hands Sponsors, Procedeo Group and El Paso Children’s Hospital, and the generous hospitality of La Viña Winery, guests enjoyed an evening of candlelit dining, locally crafted wine, and a soul-stirring performance by El Paso’s own Jezzika Sax. Her velvety saxophone and powerful vocals created a soundtrack of serenity and solidarity.
“This event is in honor of those whose lives have been affected by cancer. No one should be alone on this journey,” said Dr. Abigail Tarango, Executive Director of the University Medical Center Foundation of El Paso. “Together, we can do so much more to help support families affected by cancer.”
But beyond the wine and music, the Soirée shed light on a critical health issue. Cancer remains the leading cause of death among Hispanic populations, and in El Paso County, the number of invasive cancer cases continues to rise. For many local families, early detection and access to treatment remain out of reach. The Cancer Care Fund exists to close that gap, offering support when it's needed most. In honoring the memory of Simon Woodart Sr., and in celebrating the strength ofhis family, the Soirée Serenade reminded us all that legacies are not measured by time, but by the lives they touch.
